Abstract
INTRODUCTION Aneurysm of the extracranial internal carotid artery (AEICA) is extremely rare catastrophic pathology associated with cerebral embolism and rupture. There was no report on AEICA associated with bullous lung disease. REPORT We report a case of AECIA in a 44-year-old female patient combined with asymptomatic pulmonary bulla, and successfully treated by autologous carotid artery reconstruction. CONCLUSION The possibility of a relationship between AEICA and bullous lung disease is discussed about the level of alpha 1-antitrypsin (α1-AT). The using of external carotid artery (ECA) replace of the internal carotid artery (ICA) combined with resection of the AEICA is an autologous reconstruction to restore arterial continuity and avoiding the use of synthetic or vein graft with their potential complications.

Abstract
The feasibility of utilising low-cost, un-cooled vertical cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) as intensity modulators in real-time optical OFDM (OOFDM) transceivers is experimentally explored, for the first time, in terms of achievable signal bit rates, physical mechanisms limiting the transceiver performance and performance robustness. End-to-end real-time transmission of 11.25 Gb/s 64-QAM-encoded OOFDM signals over simple intensity modulation and direct detection, 25 km SSMF PON systems is experimentally demonstrated with a power penalty of 0.5 dB. The low extinction ratio of the VCSEL intensity-modulated OOFDM signal is identified to be the dominant factor determining the maximum obtainable transmission performance. Experimental investigations indicate that, in addition to the enhanced transceiver performance, adaptive power loading can also significantly improve the system performance robustness to variations in VCSEL operating conditions. As a direct result, the aforementioned capacity versus reach performance is still retained over a wide VCSEL bias (driving) current (voltage) range of 4.5 mA to 9 mA (275 mVpp to 320 mVpp). This work is of great value as it demonstrates the possibility of future mass production of cost-effective OOFDM transceivers for PON applications.

Abstract
Pseudo-aneurysms involving the coeliac artery caused by tuberculosis infection are extremely rare and are highly susceptible to rupture.(1) It's difficult to make the correctly diagnosis preoperative and select reconstructive procedures. We report a case of tuberculous pseudo-aneurysm in the abdominal aorta involving the coeliac artery. The active phase of the tuberculous makes it impossible to perform open surgery, so endovascular percutaneous treatment was performed, inflow to the pseudo-aneurysm was excluded by placing a custom-made stent graft at the coeliac artery orifice. The patient recovered very well and was prescribed anti-tuberculosis treatment for up to 6 months. Endovascular repair for tuberculous pseudo-aneurysm may be a life-saving option, covering the coeliac artery with stent graft is considered safe and suitable.

Abstract
The cry8C-type gene designated cry8Ca2, which was cloned and sequenced from a Bacillus thuringiensis isolate HBF-1 in China, consisted of an open reading frame of 3483 bp encoding a protein of 1160 amino-acid residues. Sequence analysis showed that the Cry8Ca2 protoxin of 130.5 kDa had 99.9% sequence homology with the previously reported Cry8Ca1 protein, with one mismatch between the two amino-acid sequences. When the Cry8Ca2 toxin was expressed in a crystal-negative strain of B. thuringiensis (HD-73(-)), elliptical crystals were produced. Cell extracts from this recombinant strain showed insecticidal activity against Anomala corpulenta larva. Mutant cry8Ca2 genes, produced by polymerase chain reaction amplification with Taq DNA polymerase, were used to develop recombinant B. thuringiensis strains. Mutants producing higher levels of insecticidal activity were identified by bioassay. Thirty-five mutants forming crystals were characterized, and two of them showed significantly increased insecticidal activity against A. corpulenta larva. The 50% lethality concentrations (LC(50)) of the two mutants were 0.2334 x 10(8) and 0.2591 x 10(8) colony-forming units g(-1), considerably lower than the LC(50) of the wild-type strain HBF-1 (0.9583 x 10(8) CFU g(-1)) and that of B. thuringiensis serovar japonensis strain Buibui (1.0752 x 10(8) CFU g(-1)).

Abstract
A method is proposed to construct an equilibrium density distribution function in the simulation of compressible flows at high Mach number by the lattice-Boltzmann method. In this method, the conventional Maxwellian distribution function is replaced by a circular function which is very simple and satisfies all needed statistical relations to recover the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The circular function is then distributed to the lattice velocity directions by Lagrangian interpolation in such a way that all the needed statistical relations are exactly satisfied when the integral in the phase space is replaced by the summation in the context of the lattice-Boltzmann (LB) method. In this framework, the equilibrium distribution functions and the associated lattice velocity model can be derived naturally without assuming specific forms. Two LB models with adjustable specific heat ratio, respectively, for one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) compressible flows are shown in the paper. Some test cases of compressible flows with strong shock waves are simulated to validate the present approach. Excellent results are obtained. Note that in the simulation, the total variation diminishing (TVD) scheme was used to capture the discontinuity with coarse mesh.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the prevalence of Toxoplasma infection between the first-episode schizophrenia and the controls and to compare the clinical features between the Toxoplasma-seronegative and Toxoplasma-seropositive patients with schizophrenia. METHOD The rate of serum reactivity to Toxoplasma in 600 schizophrenia, 600 affective disorders, and 400 controls was investigated. The clinical symptoms of the schizophrenia patients were scored and compared. RESULTS The rate of IgG antibody, not IgM in the schizophrenia patients, was higher than the control groups, and the odds ratio of schizophrenia associated with IgG antibody was 2.22-5.12. The affective disorders did not differ in the rate of IgG or IgM antibody from the normal or the physical disease control. The seropositive schizophrenia patients had higher scores on the positive subscale and three components of Positive and Negative Symptoms Scale than the seronegative patients. CONCLUSION This study lent further weight to the hypothesis that exposure to Toxoplasma may be a risk factor for schizophrenia.

Abstract
A lattice Boltzmann interface capturing method for incompressible flows is proposed in this paper. The interface is naturally captured by minimizing the free energy functional. It is easily implemented and does not require interface reconstruction as required by most of the traditional interface tracking methods such as the volume of fluid method. Moreover, the method does not require the isotropic property of the fourth order lattice tensor as do other lattice Boltzmann methods. Thus the D2Q5 (D2 means two dimensional, Q5 means five velocity model) discrete velocity model is applied in the method. The interface profile along the flat interface and coexistence curve can be given analytically. The proposed method is validated for some test cases, and compared to the volume of fluid and level set methods. Numerical results show that the present method performs very well and can generate very sharp interfaces.

Abstract
We demonstrate extinction ratio improvement by using pump-modulated four-wave mixing in a dispersion-flattened nonlinear photonic crystal fiber. A 6-dB improvement in the extinction ratio of a degraded return-to-zero signal has been achieved. A power penalty improvement of 3 dB at 10(-9) bit-error-rate level is obtained in the 10 Gb/s bit-error-rate measurements.

Abstract
We report two chaotic micromixers that exhibit fast mixing at low Reynolds numbers in this paper. Passive mixers usually use the channel geometry to stir the fluids, and many previously reported designs rely on inertial effects which are only available at moderate Re. In this paper, we propose two chaotic micromixers using two-layer crossing channels. Both numerical and experimental studies show that the mixers are very efficient for fluid manipulation at low Reynolds numbers, such as stretching and splitting, folding and recombination, through which chaotic advection can be generated and the mixing is significantly promoted. More importantly, the generation of chaotic advection does not rely on the fluid inertial forces, so the mixers work well at very low Re. The mixers are benchmarked against a three-dimensional serpentine mixer. Results show that the latter is inefficient at Re = 0.2, while the new design exhibits rapid mixing at Re = 0.2 and at Re of O(10(-2)). The new mixer design will benefit various microfluidic systems.
