Abstract
BACKGROUND Forty percent of patients with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) do not wear their indicated and prescribed compression stockings. Difficulties in donning and a feeling of constraint are the most common reasons for non-adherence. OBJECTIVE The aim was to develop a compression stocking system that is easy to don and dose adjustable. METHODS A modular compression stocking kit composed of an understocking and three superimposable leggings (SLLLs) was developed. Substocking pressures (P) at the thinnest part above the ankle (cB level) were 17 mm (understocking) + 15 + 10 + 10 mmHg (3 superimposed leggings; Hatra method). Twenty healthy subjects and 20 patients over 65 years with CVI donned the SLLL compression kit. P was measured in vivo (Picopress method) at the transition of the Achilles tendon to the calf muscle (level cB1) during rest and ankle movements (DSI; dynamic stiffness index) and compared with a strong compression stocking of 40 mmHg (S40). RESULTS Twenty (20/20) patients aged over 65 with CVI (C4-6) successfully donned the SLLL compression kit without aid, compared with 12 (12/20) who were able to don the S40 without aid (p = .02). In vivo resting P at level cB1 was 34.3 mmHg (SLLL) compared with 37.3 mmHg (S40) (p = .1). The DSI was 16.1 (SLLL) compared with 17.9 (p = .79; S40; CVI group). CONCLUSION The physical properties of the SLLL compression stocking kit correspond to the characteristics of a strong stocking at rest and exercise (DSI). The donning success rate is excellent (100%). A further potential advantage is that the SLLL leg compression kit is dose adjustable, according to indication or patient tolerance. Wearing comfort over periods of several days and clinical effectiveness need to be investigated in future trials.

Abstract
In order to understand and imitate the more complex bio-processes and fascinating functions in nature, protein self-assembly has been studied and has attracted more and more interest in recent years. Artificial self-assemblies of proteins have been constructed through many strategies. However, the design of complicated protein self-assemblies utilizing the special profile of building blocks remains a challenge. We herein report linear and 2D nanostructures constructed from a V shape SMAC protein and induced by metal coordination. Zigzag nanowires and wavy 2D nanostructures have been demonstrated by AFM and TEM. The zigzag nanowires can translate to a 2D nanostructure with an excess of metal ions, which reveals the step by step assembly process. Fluorescence and UV/Vis spectra have also been obtained to further study the mechanism and process of self-assembly. Upon the protein nanostructure, fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) could also be detected using fluorescein modified proteins as building blocks. This article provides an approach for designing and controlling self-assembled protein nanostructures with a distinctive topological morphology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Organ donation rates in Germany are lower than in other countries and have declined further after manipulations of the waiting lists in some German transplant centers became public. Attitudes and commitment of medical personnel are crucial for successful organ donation. Therefore, we studied the attitudes of hospital staff towards organ donation and transplantation. METHOD In 50 Bavarian hospitals, medical professionals working in units relevant to organ donation were asked to respond to an anonymous questionnaire. RESULTS 2983 questionnaires could be evaluated. The majority of all respondents had a positive attitude towards organ donation; 71 % were willing to donate their organs after brain death and 57 % were willing to accept a transplant in case of organ failure. Rates of positive attitude were lower among nurses than among physicians. 28 % indicated that recent developments had a negative impact on their attitude and of those approximately half evaluated the work of transplant centers negatively. Overall only 23 % considered organ allocation as fair. The majority of nurses and a large proportion of physicians considered themselves as not well informed. CONCLUSION The current loss of confidence into organ donation and transplantation also affects the attitude of medical personnel. Intensified measures of information and full transparency of all procedures are urgently needed.

Abstract
Engineered macroscopic quantum systems based on superconducting electronic circuits are attractive for experimentally exploring diverse questions in quantum information science. At the current state of the art, quantum bits (qubits) are fabricated, initialized, controlled, read out and coupled to each other in simple circuits. This enables the realization of basic logic gates, the creation of complex entangled states and the demonstration of algorithms or error correction. Using different variants of low-noise parametric amplifiers, dispersive quantum non-demolition single-shot readout of single-qubit states with high fidelity has enabled continuous and discrete feedback control of single qubits. Here we realize full deterministic quantum teleportation with feed-forward in a chip-based superconducting circuit architecture. We use a set of two parametric amplifiers for both joint two-qubit and individual qubit single-shot readout, combined with flexible real-time digital electronics. Our device uses a crossed quantum bus technology that allows us to create complex networks with arbitrary connecting topology in a planar architecture. The deterministic teleportation process succeeds with order unit probability for any input state, as we prepare maximally entangled two-qubit states as a resource and distinguish all Bell states in a single two-qubit measurement with high efficiency and high fidelity. We teleport quantum states between two macroscopic systems separated by 6 mm at a rate of 10(4) s(-1), exceeding other reported implementations. The low transmission loss of superconducting waveguides is likely to enable the range of this and other schemes to be extended to significantly larger distances, enabling tests of non-locality and the realization of elements for quantum communication at microwave frequencies. The demonstrated feed-forward may also find application in error correction schemes.

Abstract
A localized qubit entangled with a propagating quantum field is well suited to study nonlocal aspects of quantum mechanics and may also provide a channel to communicate between spatially separated nodes in a quantum network. Here, we report the on-demand generation and characterization of Bell-type entangled states between a superconducting qubit and propagating microwave fields composed of zero-, one-, and two-photon Fock states. Using low noise linear amplification and efficient data acquisition we extract all relevant correlations between the qubit and the photon states and demonstrate entanglement with high fidelity.

Abstract
A new S2k AWMF guideline for the treatment of idiopathic facial palsy has been published. An accurate differential diagnosis is indispensable as 25-40% of all facial palsy cases are of non-idiopathic origin. It is explicitly recommended to treat patients with idiopathic facial palsy with steroids. Steroids favour a complete recovery, decrease the risk of synkinesis, autonomic sequelae and contractures. Adjuvant antiviral therapy cannot be recommended. On current data there is not sufficient evidence that the combination of steroids with antiviral drugs has a benefit for the patients. Even when not supported by randomized trials, adjuvant symptomatic therapy to protect the cornea and to avoid complications is recommended. There is no scientific evidence that physical therapy has any benefit but it should be taken into account because of psychological reasons. A benefit of acupuncture has not been proven. If eye closure remains incomplete as result of defective healing, one therapeutic option is lid loading of the upper eye lid. Moreover, in case of severe persistent palsy, several well-established microsurgical nerve and muscle plasty procedures are available.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Retinal detachment with inferior proliferative vitreoretinopathy is a difficult to treat problem. The aim of our study was to assess the safety and efficacy of Densiron in the clinical management of complicated retinal detachment. HISTORY AND SIGNS 6 eyes of 6 consecutive patients presenting with a retinal detachment with inferior proliferative vitreoretinopathy grade 3 were treated with pars plana vitrectomy and injection of Densiron. The mean age of the patients was 61 years. 3 patients had a previous unsuccessful vitreoretinal surgery and 3 patients had Densiron as a first procedure. The extent of detachment was at least 2 or more quadrants with macular involvement in 3 cases. Preoperatively the mean visual acuity was 29.2 letters with ETDRS. THERAPY AND OUTCOME Densiron was removed after an average of 58 days. 5 patients achieved retinal re-attachment without further tamponade, and 1 patient after additional injection of conventional silicon oil. 4 - 6 weeks after removal of Densiron the mean visual acuity was 50.2 letters with ETDRS. The most common complication was an elevated intraocular pressure during endotamponade, which resolved following removal of the agent. CONCLUSIONS Densiron improves inferior tamponade, and in clinical practice may be considered to increase the anatomic success rate in selected cases of complicated retinal detachment with inferior proliferative vitreoretinopathy.
