Abstract
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is associated with benign cutaneous or mucosal lesions and with malignant tumours, but none of the HPV types has so far been related to skin tags. Skin biopsy specimens from 49 Caucasian patients suffering from the presence of multiple soft fibromas were analysed by means of dot blot hybridization and by polymerase chain reaction assays aimed at detecting all known HPV types. The results revealed the presence of HPV DNA type 6/11 in 88% of the skin tags examined. This result supports the hypothesis that HPV plays a part in the progression of cutaneous soft fibromas, as previously reported for laryngeal papillomas.

Abstract
GAS6 is a ligand for the tyrosine kinase receptors Rse, Axl, and Mer, but its function is poorly understood. Previous studies reported that both GAS6 and Axl are expressed by vascular endothelial cells (EC), which play a key role in leukocyte extravasation into tissues during inflammation through adhesive interactions with these cells. The aim of this work was to evaluate the GAS6 effect on the adhesive function of EC. Treatment of EC with GAS6 significantly inhibited adhesion of polymorphonuclear cells (PMN) induced by phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA), platelet-activating factor (PAF), thrombin, interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), but not that induced by FMLP and IL-8. GAS6 did not affect adhesion to resting EC. Titration experiments showed that high concentrations of GAS6 were needed to inhibit PMN adhesion and that inhibition was dose-dependent at the concentration range of 0.1 to 1 microg/mL. One possibility was that high concentrations were needed to overwhelm the effect of endogenous GAS6 produced by EC. In line with this possibility, treatment of resting EC with soluble Axl significantly potentiated PMN adhesion. Analysis of localization of GAS6 by confocal microscopy and cytofluorimetric analysis showed that it is concentrated along the plasma membrane in resting EC and treatment with PAF induces depletion and/or redistribution of the molecule. These data suggest that GAS6 functions as a physiologic antiinflammatory agent produced by resting EC and depleted when proinflammatory stimuli turn on the proadhesive machinery of EC.

Abstract
In the Institute of Dermatology of the University of Rome 'La Sapienza' (IDURLS) from 1989 to 1994, 2198 immigrants from countries outside the European Community were seen as out-patients. Their personal and pathological data were collected by a particular software 'Questio', set up together with colleagues of the Interdepartimental Center for Scientific Calculous (ICSC) of the University of Rome 'La Sapienza'. The number of patients has been increasing from 326 in 1989 to 436 in 1994. Most of the people were coming from Africa, but from 1989 to 1994 the number of patients from the regions of ex-Yugoslavia has been increasing. About one third of the immigrants were unemployed, whereas 40% of them had a job (worker or employee), and the remaining 20% was composed by students and housewives. Most immigrants (1474 patients) were 20-39-year-old. Their data were compared with those of a control group composed by 2100 Italian people of the same age and sex, seen as out-patients in IDURLS in the same period. The most frequent skin disorders observed in immigrants were skin infectious or parasitic diseases, above all scabies. Excluding people with scabies, both immigrants and Italian patients shared the same skin diseases typical of young adult people: many fungal infections, many contact dermatitis and very few skin malignant tumors.

Abstract
HNE (4-hydroxy-2,3-trans-nonenal), and aldehydic product of lipid peroxidation, has been reported to modulate different functional parameters of human and rat neutrophils (PMNs), such as chemiluminescence, migration and some enzymatic activities, thus exerting effects that varied according to the concentration tested. Experiments were done to evaluate the effects of HNE on superoxide anion (O2-) production from human PMNs, isolated from healthy volunteers. After having tested that HNE by itself was not able to activate the cells, comparisons were made between its effects on PMNs, stimulated by either a single stimulus, N-formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine (FMLP), or a combination of stimuli, such as FMLP and the neuropeptide substance P (SP; primed PMNs). In the concentration range tested (10(-12) - 10(-4) M), HNE inhibited FMLP-evoked O2- production with an IC50 of 11.6 +/- 1.5 x 10(-6) M; at concentrations < or = 10(-6) M, HNE enhanced O2- production elicited by FMLP + SP, while higher concentrations were inhibitory. There was a bell-shaped dose-response curve to the enhancing effects of HNE, depending on the incubation time being recorded after only short periods (< or = 5 min) of the exposure of the cells to HNE; this was not shown by structurally-related aldehydes, such as 2-nonenal and nonanal. These results suggest that low concentrations of HNE may participate in the evolution of the inflammatory process, by contributing to the activation of PMNs. The effects of high concentrations of the aldehyde may represent a mechanism which contributes to the regulation of the extent of the inflammatory response.

Abstract
The effect of pretreatment with pidotimod ((R)-3-[(S)- (5-oxo-2-pyrrolidinyl)-carbonyl]-thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid, PGT/1A, CAS 121808-62-6) was evaluated in mice infected with two challenging doses of three different viruses. Mengovirus, Herpes simplex, influenza virus were used. The mice were treated 15 days before the virus challenge. The antiviral effect of pidotimod was evaluated as difference in survival time versus control groups challenged with viruses but not pretreated with pidotimod. In groups pretreated and challenged with the lower dose of each virus strain a statistically significant increase in survival time was observed. On the basis of the known effects of pidotimod on immune system, this effect is due to an immunostimulating effect of this drug.

Abstract
Human neutrophils have been demonstrated to possess both adenosine A1 and A2 receptors: activation of adenosine A2 receptors inhibits the respiratory burst, assayed as superoxide anion production (O-2) from cells stimulated by the bacterial peptide N-formylmethionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine (FMLP). Exposure of neutrophils to different combinations of stimuli results in synergistic or primed responses. These responses can be measured by challenging the cells either with a combination of FMLP and platelet activating factor (PAF), or with a combination of PAF and the neuropeptide substance P, which by itself does not induce O-2 production. In order to evaluate the ability of adenosine receptor agonists to inhibit O-2 production by primed or synergistically stimulated neutrophils, a non-selective adenosine receptor agonist, 2-chloroadenosine, was tested in comparison with reportedly selective ligands of adenosine A1 and A2 receptor types, N6-cyclopentyladenosine (CPA) and 2-[4-(2-carboxyethyl)phenethylamino]-5'-N-ethyl-carboxamido adenosine (CGS 21680). The order of activity CGS 21680 > 2-chloroadenosine > CPA indicates that adenosine A2 receptors mediate the inhibition of the respiratory burst even when neutrophils are primed or synergistically activated. 8-Phenyltheophylline antagonized the effects of these adenosine receptor agonists in a competitive way.

Abstract
In the present study the intracellular activity of oligoadenylate synthetase and ribonuclease have been evaluated in two human breast cancer cell lines treated with tamoxifen, a well known antiestrogenic drug. Increased levels of oligoadenylate synthetase and enhanced ribonuclease activity have been found in the cultures of CG5 cell line treated with concentrations of tamoxifen inhibiting cell growth. In the experiments with the EVSA-T cell line we found neither an antiproliferative effect nor an increased oligoadenylate synthetase and ribonuclease activity. It is likely that these enzymes are involved in the mechanisms by which this drug acts as an antiproliferative agent.

Abstract
Rat peritoneal mast cells were pretreated for 10 min at 37 degrees C with either substance P (SP, 3 or 6 microM) or compound 48/80 (37.5, 50 or 75 ng/ml). The effect of this pretreatment on the subsequent responsiveness of the cells to SP was studied. Both SP and compound 48/80 pretreatment of rat peritoneal mast cells inhibited the subsequent response of the cells to SP. The degree of inhibition produced by either SP or compound 48/80 was dependent on the concentration used to pretreat the cells. Inhibition of the response of the cells to SP was observed whether or not the pretreating agent was removed or remained in contact with the cells during the subsequent stimulation with SP. It is concluded that compound 48/80 and SP desensitize the cells to subsequent stimulation by SP and possible mechanisms for this are discussed.

Abstract
The effects of a beta interferon (beta-IFN) of human origin on different parameters of human neutrophil functioning were evaluated in vitro. In the concentration range 10(2)-10(4) IU/ml beta-IFN enhanced superoxide anion (O2-) production evoked by the peptide N-formylmethionyl-leucylphenylalanine (FMLP), 10(-7) M, when O2- production elicited by FMLP in the absence of beta-IFN treatment was 2.43 +/- 0.32 nmol cytochrome C reduced/10(6) cells/min. The enhancement afforded by 10(3) and 10(4) IU/ml beta-IFN was statistically significant. When FMLP-induced O2- generation was 4.55 +/- 0.3 nmol cytochrome C reduced/10(6) cells/min, no increase was detected after beta-IFN treatment. Phagocytosis was enhanced by beta-IFN in one case, with no effect in four others. Chemotaxis was not affected by exposure to beta-IFN. These results indicated that beta-IFN could exert modulating effects on some neutrophil functions that varied according to the extent of cell response to the stimuli.

Abstract
Myelotoxicity is one of the most important side effects of antineoplastic drugs. Even in using the same dosages, the gravity of this toxicity varies greatly among different patients. With the aim of evaluating if an in vitro test may predict such an effect we have measured in bone marrow samples taken from 15 patients undergoing chemotherapy for small-cell lung cancer the in vitro uptake of 3H-thymidine in the presence or absence of the cytostatic drugs used for the clinical treatment of these patients. We did not find a clear correlation between the in vitro results and the myelotoxicity observed during the clinical course.
