Abstract
Previously we have shown that collagen I enhances the maturation and function of dendritic cells (DCs). Inflammatory mediators such as tumour necrosis factor (TNF)- alpha, interleukin (IL)-1 beta and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) are also known to activate DCs. Here we investigated the involvement of TNF-alpha on the collagen I-induced DCs activation. TNF-a neutralization inhibited collagen I-induced IL-12 secretions by DCs. Additionally, we observed suppression of collagen I-induced costimulatory molecules expression along with down-regulation of genes involved in DCs activation pathway. Furthermore, TNF- alpha inhibition upon collagen Istimulation up-regulated the expression of interferon regulatory transcription factor IRF4, when compared to collagen I only treated cells. Collectively, our data demonstrate that collagen I induce TNF- alpha production, which is crucial for the activation and function of DCs, through down-regulation of IRF4, and implicates the importance in development of anti- TNF-alpha therapeutics for several inflammatory diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association of inhaler use with haemoptysis has rarely been reported in patients with non-cystic fibrosis (CF) bronchiectasis. OBJECTIVE To elucidate the effect of inhaler use on the development of haemoptysis in patients with non-CF bronchiectasis. METHODS In a case-crossover study of 192 non-CF bronchiectasis patients with a history of haemoptysis and inhaler use, the risk of haemoptysis associated with the use of inhalers was elucidated. Two inhaled corticosteroids/long-acting β₂-agonists (ICS/LABA), one long-acting muscarinic antagonist and one short-acting β₂-agonist (SABA) were evaluated. The case and control periods were defined respectively as 030 and 180210 days before haemoptysis. RESULTS The risk of haemoptysis during the case period was 3.51 times higher than during the control period with any use of inhalers (95%CI 1.966.28). The results of clinically significant haemoptysis showed good agreement with those of total events. These associations were consistent with the sensitivity analyses. In the sub-analysis according to inhaler type, ICS/LABA and SABA were significantly associated with an increased risk of haemoptysis (aOR 2.62, 95%CI 1.255.45; aOR 2.51, 95%CI 2.235.15). CONCLUSIONS In patients with non-CF bronchiectasis, the use of inhalers, especially including 2-agonist, was associated with an increased risk of haemoptysis.

Abstract
Background: Inflammation of adipocytes has been a therapeutic target for treatment of obesity and metabolic disorders which cause insulin resistance and hence lead to type II diabetes. Luteolin is a bioflavonoid with many beneficial properties such as antioxidant, antiproliferative, and anti-cancer. Objectives: To elucidate the potential anti-inflammatory response and the underlying mechanism of luteolin in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Materials and Methods: We stimulated 3T3-L1 adipocytes with the mixture of tumor necrosis factor-α, lipopolysaccharide, and interferon-γ (TLI) in the presence or absence of luteolin. We performed Griess’ method for nitric oxide (NO) production and measure mRNA and protein expressions by real-time polymerase chain reaction and western blotting, respectively. Results: Luteolin opposed the stimulation of inducible nitric oxide synthase and NO production by simultaneous treatment of adipocytes with TLI. Furthermore, it reduced the pro-inflammatory genes such as cyclooxygenase-2, interleukin-6, resistin, and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1. Furthermore, luteolin improved the insulin sensitivity by enhancing the expression of insulin receptor substrates (IRS1/2) and glucose transporter-4 via phosphatidylinositol-3K signaling pathway. This inhibition was associated with suppression of Iκ-B-α degradation and subsequent inhibition of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) p65 translocation to the nucleus. In addition, luteolin blocked the phosphorylation of ERK1/2, c-Jun N-terminal Kinases and also p38 mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs). Conclusions: These results illustrate that luteolin attenuates inflammatory responses in the adipocytes through suppression of NF-κB and MAPKs activation, and also improves insulin sensitivity in 3T3-L1 cells, suggesting that luteolin may represent a therapeutic agent to prevent obesity-associated inflammation and insulin resistance.

Abstract
Obesity is a common disease worldwide that often results in serious conditions including hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia. Many herbal medicines have been examined with regard to ameliorating obesity. We investigated the anti-obesity effects of 50% EtOH extract of Triticum aestivum sprout (TAEE) in high-fat-diet (HFD)-induced obese mice. TAEE administration (10, 50, or 200 mg/kg) for 6 weeks significantly decreased the body weights, serum total cholesterol (TC), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in HFD-fed mice. TAEE treatment reduced lipid accumulation in epididymal white adipose tissue (EWAT) and liver. Moreover, TC and lipid levels were decreased by TAEE treatment in liver. Serum leptin and adiponectin concentrations were reduced by TAEE treatment. TAEE-treated mice showed decreases in peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) and fatty acid synthase expression in EWAT. Furthermore, TAEE administration elevated levels of PPARα protein in the liver of HFD-induced obese mice. These results suggest that TAEE supplementation might be beneficial for the treatment and prevention of obesity and related diseases.

Abstract
AIM To explore the rate of add-on therapy with solifenacin in men with voiding and storage lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) after tamsulosin monotherapy and to explore predictive factors for starting solifenacin add-on therapy. METHODS Men aged ≥ 45 years with IPSS ≥ 12 and symptoms of OAB (OAB-V8 ≥ 8, micturition ≥ 8/24 h, urgency ≥ 2/24 h) were enrolled to receive tamsulosin 0.2 mg once daily. After 4 weeks, men with residual symptoms of OAB and reported 'dissatisfied' or 'a little satisfied' were received solifenacin 5 mg in combination with tamsulosin monotherapy. Subjects completed an IPSS, a Quality of life (QoL) index, OAB V8, and an International Consultation of Incontinence Questionnaire (ICIQ)-Male LUTS, and patient perception of bladder condition (PPBC) at baseline and week 4. RESULTS Of a total of 305 patients, 254 patients completed 4 weeks of tamsulosin treatment. For 176 patients, solifenacin was added (69.3%). Significant predictive factors of solifenacin add-on therapy included long LUTS duration, high IPSS, number of micturitions per 24 h, more urgency episodes, high urgency severity score in a voiding diary and high OAB V8 score. Based on multivariable analysis, potential predictive factors of solifenacin add-on therapy included long LUTS duration (OR = 1.008, 95% CI: 1.001-1.014), high serum PSA (OR = 1.543, 95% CI: 1.136-2.095) and small prostate size (OR = 0.970, 95% CI: 0.947-0.994) (p < 0.05). IPSS, daytime micturitions and urgency episodes, OAB V8 scores, ICIQ and PPBC were improved after tamsulosin monotherapy. CONCLUSIONS Two thirds of men with voiding and storage LUTS needed to add anticholinergics after 4 weeks of tamsulosin monotherapy. Patients with longer lasting symptoms and storage symptoms with small prostate volume may require the anticholinergic add-on.

Abstract
Metastatic melanoma is one of the most deadly and evasive cancers. Collagen I in the extracellular matrix promotes the migration and invasion of tumor cells through the production of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) 2 and 9. Discoidin domain receptor (DDR) 2 is a collagen receptor that is implicated in several cancer types including breast and prostate cancers. However, the role of DDR2 in the migration and invasion of murine melanoma cells is less studied. In the present study, we investigated the effects and underlying mechanisms of DDR2 in migration and invasion of B16BL6 melanoma cells in response to collagen I. Results demonstrated that DDR2 is expressed and is phosphorylated by collagen I in the cells. Upon down-regulation of DDR2 using small-interfering RNA (siRNA) approach, both of the cell migratory and invasive phenotypes were significantly attenuated when compared with the control cells. This effect was mediated via suppression of MMP2/9 upon DDR2 inhibition. Furthermore, inhibition of DDR2 by specific siRNA markedly reduced the activation of extracellular regulated kinase (ERK) 1 and 2 and nuclear factor of kappa B (NF-κB) in the cells when compared with the control cells. Overall, these data demonstrated that DDR2 siRNA-mediated suppression of ERK1/2 and NF-κB could down-regulate the expressions of MMP2/9 in response to collagen I to reduce the migratory and invasive phenotypes of the cells.

Abstract
Euphorbia maculata (EM) is a traditionally used antidiarrheal, antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant agent. However, the effects of EM on platelet activity remain to be elucidated. Therefore, the present study investigated the antiplatelet effect of various EM extract fractions on platelet aggregation in rats. The antiplatelet activity of the EM fractions on collagen or adenosine diphosphate (ADP)‑induced platelet aggregation was evaluated in vitro and ex vivo. Thromboxane B2 (TXB2) formation, rat‑tail bleeding time and coagulation time were also measured. Among the fractions, the chloroform fraction of EM (CFEM) significantly inhibited ADP‑induced platelet aggregation in vitro. Furthermore, oral administration of 50 mg/kg CFEM to rats significantly reduced ADP‑induced platelet aggregation without increasing the tail bleeding time or coagulation time. In addition, EM significantly inhibited the level of TXB2 formation in a dose‑dependent manner. These results suggest that CFEM exhibits antiplatelet activity, without causing bleeding, via the suppression of TXB2 formation. CFEM may be a type of food which has the potential for preventing cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
AIMS In spite of the reported efficacy and safety of antimuscarinics in men with OAB (overactive bladder) and BPO (benign prostatic obstruction), many patients do not persist with the treatment. We aimed to evaluate persistence and the reasons for the discontinuation of solifenacin add-on therapy in men with residual symptoms of OAB after tamsulosin monotherapy for BPO in a real clinical environment. METHODS Men aged ≥ 45 years with IPSS ≥ 12 and symptoms of OAB (OAB-V8 ≥ 8, micturition ≥ 8/24 h, urgency ≥ 2/24 h) were prescribed tamsulosin 0.2 mg. After 4 weeks, men who had residual symptoms of OAB (OAB-V8 ≥ 8, micturition ≥ 8/24 h, urgency ≥ 1/24 h) and reported that they were 'dissatisfied' or 'a little satisfied' with the therapy were enrolled and prescribed solifenacin 5 mg in combination with tamsulosin. After 52 weeks, persistence and the reasons for the discontinuation of solifenacin were evaluated. Factors related to persistence were analysed. RESULTS Of the 305 men who had been treated with tamsulosin, 176 were prescribed solifenacin. After 52 weeks, 44 (25%) remained on solifenacin therapy. Of the 132 who discontinued solifenacin, 85 were evaluated on the reason for discontinuation. The three most common reasons for discontinuation were adverse events (AEs) (35%), lack of efficacy (33%), and improvement in symptoms (16%). The aggravation of voiding symptoms was the most common AE leading to discontinuation. Retention was observed in 11 men. None of the demographical or clinical characteristics were significantly related to persistence. CONCLUSIONS Only 25% men with OAB and BPO remained on antimuscarinic add-on therapy after 1 year, mostly because of AEs and lack of efficacy. Realistic data should be added to what is already known about antimuscarinic treatment in men by including patients who were excluded or who dropped out of well-designed clinical trials.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Resistin was recently reported to play a role in inflammation-related diseases such as arthritis. However, the precise role of resistin in chronic inflammatory diseases, such as periodontal disease, remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the combined effects of nicotine and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on the expression of resistin and to assess whether resistin expression influences the levels of inflammatory cytokines, extracellular matrix (ECM) molecules and MMPs in human periodontal ligament cells (PDLCs) stimulated with both nicotine and LPS. MATERIAL AND METHODS PDLCs were pretreated with isoproterenol or resistin-specific small interfering RNA (siRNA), stimulated with LPS plus nicotine for 24 h, and then monitored for the production of inflammatory mediators. The concentrations of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and nitric oxide (NO) were measured by radioimmunoassay and the Griess method, respectively. RT-PCR and western blot analysis were used to measure the levels of mRNA and protein, respectively. Western blot analysis was also used to assess the activation of various signal-transduction pathways. RESULTS Treatment with nicotine plus LPS up-regulated the expression of resistin mRNA and the production of resistin protein in PDLCs in a time- and concentration-dependent manner. Isoproterenol-mediated interference with the function of resistin, or siRNA-mediated knockdown of resistin expression, markedly attenuated the LPS plus nicotine-mediated stimulation of PGE2 and NO production, the production of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and inducible nitric oxide synthase proteins and the expression of proinflammatory cytokines [tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6 and IL-12] and MMPs (MMP-1, MMP-2 and MMP-9); however, these treatments restored the expression of ECM molecules. Furthermore, pretreatment with isoproterenol or resistin-specific siRNA blocked nicotine plus LPS-induced activation of phosphoinositide-3-kinase, glycogen synthase kinase-3 beta, β-catenin, p38, ERK, JNK and nuclear factor-κB. CONCLUSION This is the first study to show that the inhibition of resistin, by either a pharmacological or a genetic silencing approach, has anti-inflammatory effects. These effects include decreased levels of inflammatory cytokines and the prevention of ECM breakdown in a nicotine plus LPS-stimulated PDLC model.

Abstract
Conventional solar cells exhibit limited efficiencies in part due to their inability to absorb the entire solar spectrum. Sub-band-gap photons are typically lost but could be captured if a material that performs up-conversion, which shifts photon energies higher, is coupled to the device. Recently, molecular chromophores that undergo triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) have shown promise for efficient up-conversion at low irradiance, suitable for some types of solar cells. However, the molecular systems that have shown the highest up-conversion efficiency to date are ill suited to broadband light harvesting, reducing their applicability. Here we overcome this limitation by combining an organic TTA system with highly fluorescent CdSe semiconductor nanocrystals. Because of their broadband absorption and spectrally narrow, size-tunable fluorescence, the nanocrystals absorb the radiation lost by the TTA chromophores, returning this energy to the up-converter. The resulting nanocrystal-boosted system shows a doubled light-harvesting ability, which allows a green-to-blue conversion efficiency of ∼12.5% under 0.5 suns of incoherent excitation. This record efficiency at subsolar irradiance demonstrates that boosting the TTA by light-emitting nanocrystals can potentially provide a general route for up-conversion for different photovoltaic and photocatalytic applications.

Abstract
Dioscin (DS) is a steroidal saponin present in a number of medicinal plants and has been shown to exert anticancer, antifungal and antiviral effects. The present study aimed to deternube the effects DS on the regulation of adipogenesis and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. In vitro experiments were performed using differentiating 3T3-L1 cells treated with various concentrations (0-4 µM) of DS for 6 days. A cell viability assay was performed on differentiating cells following exposure to DS. Oil Red O staining and triglyceride content assay were performed to evaluate the lipid accumulation in the cells. We also carried out the following experiments: i) flow cytometry for cell cycle analysis, ii) quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction for measuring adipogenesis-related gene expression, and iii) western blot analysis to measure the expression of adipogenesis transcription factors and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) phosphorylation. In vivo experiements were performed using mice with obesity induced by a high-fat diet (HFD) that were treated with or without DS for 7 weeks. DS suppressed lipid accumulation in the 3T3-L1 cells without affecting viability at a dose of up to 4 µM. It also delayed cell cycle progression 48 h after the initiation of adipogenesis. DS inhibited adipocyte differentiation by the downregulation of adipogenic transcription factors and attenuated the expression of adipogenesis-associated genes. In addition, it enhanced the phosphorylation of AMPK and its target molecule, ACC, during the differentiation of the cells. Moreover, the inhibition of adipogenesis by DS was mediated through the suppression of the phosphorylation of MAPKs, such as extracellular-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) and p38, but not c-Jun-N-terminal kinase (JNK). DS significantly reduced weight gain in the mice with HFD-induced obesity; this was evident by the suppression of fat accumulation in the abdomen. the present study reveals an anti-adipogenic effect of DS in vitro and in vivo and highlights AMPK/MAPK signaling as targets for DS during adipogenesis.

Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to compare the results and plate fit of periprosthetic and non-periprosthetic distal femur fractures fixed with locking plates. Twenty-one periprosthetic fractures above a TKA and 27 non-periprosthetic fractures were retrospectively reviewed. The primary healing rate, bone union time, clinical and radiographic results, complications, and additional surgeries were compared between the two groups. The quality of the plate fit on the bone was also compared. There were no differences in the primary healing rate, bone union time, clinical and radiographic results between the two groups. The incidence of overall complication and additional surgeries did not differ (3/21 vs. 5/27, 1/21 vs. 4/27). Plate fit trouble was observed more frequently in periprosthetic fractures (10/21 vs. 1/27, p = 0.004). Fixation of distal femur fractures with locking plates provided satisfactory results with a low risk of complications and additional surgeries in both periprosthetic and non-periprosthetic fractures.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Mirtazapine is an antidepressant that acts by enhancing serotonergic and noradrenergic neurotransmission. This study aimed to evaluate mirtazapine pharmacokinetic data from Korean psychiatric patients and to identify the potential factors affecting its steady-state concentration. METHODS A total of 337 samples of steady-state mirtazapine concentrations from 188 adult psychiatric outpatients were retrospectively evaluated. Serum mirtazapine concentrations were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. RESULTS Median mirtazapine concentration was 43.6 μg/L (164.37 nmol) at a daily dosage range of 7.5-60 mg. At the steady state, mirtazapine dose had a positive correlation with the drug concentration. Mean concentration-to-dose (C/D) ratio was 1.48 μg/L/mg/day (5.58 nmol/mg/day), which was higher than that in a previous study in Caucasian subjects. Age and paroxetine co-medication were positively associated with C/D ratio. Initial mirtazapine concentration and C/D ratio did not show an association with responsiveness in depressive patients. DISCUSSION This study presented the therapeutic drug monitoring data for mirtazapine and pharmacokinetic variations of mirtazapine in an Asian population. A further study could be helpful for clinical decision making based on the characteristics of patients.

Abstract
We evaluated the effectiveness of an educational brochure explaining proper sputum collection techniques for tuberculosis (TB) diagnosis. Patients with suspected pulmonary TB (PTB) were randomly assigned to either the brochure-using group or the non-using group. No significant difference in positive TB culture rates was observed between the brochure-using and non-using groups (33.1% vs. 35.6%, P = 0.690). The proportions of acceptable specimen samples for bacterial pneumonia were also similar between the two groups (37.1% vs. 35.6%). An educational brochure provided by the attending physician explaining an acceptable specimen collection method for TB testing did not result in a higher detection rate of PTB.

Abstract
SETTING Factors that influence the annual rate of decline of lung function need to be verified. OBJECTIVE To determine the effects of metabolic syndrome, especially hypertension, on the annual rate of decline in lung function. DESIGN A total of 635 healthy participants without known respiratory disease completed baseline and follow-up routine check-ups, including a pulmonary function test, for at least 3 years. Age, sex, height, weight, waist circumference, smoking status, other underlying diseases, and pulmonary function and blood test results were carefully reviewed. RESULTS In a multivariable analysis of baseline data, diabetes was associated with lower forced vital capacity (FVC). In longitudinal analysis using mixed linear regression, hypertension was an independent predictor for acceleration of FVC decline rate compared to subjects without hypertension (-37.2 vs. -18.5 ml/year), while anti-hypertensive medication decelerated FVC decline in hypertensive subjects (-58.9 vs. -32.3 ml/year). The annual rate of decline in forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) in groups with and without hypertension did not differ significantly. No significant difference was found in FEV1 or FVC annual rates of decline with regard to the presence of diabetes, dyslipidaemia, obesity or abdominal obesity. CONCLUSION Hypertension is associated with an accelerated decline in FVC, but anti-hypertensive medication might abate the rate of decline in asymptomatic healthy subjects.

Abstract
Chromosomal aneuploidy is considerably frequent and may involve either autosomes or sex chromosomes. While double aneuploidy involving both autosomal and sex chromosomes is rare, several reports described the cases of sex chromosomal aneuploidies in combination with trisomy 21, such as Down-Klinefelter and Down-Turner syndrome. However, trisomy 8-Turner syndrome has been rarely described to date. Here we report a case of a 28-year-old female with mosaic trisomy 8-Turner syndrome. The patient was referred to our hospital for aortic dissection. On physical evaluation, features of her phenotype, which included short stature, webbed neck and cubitus valgus, suggested congenital anomalies such as Turner syndrome. Chest CT revealed aortic dissection with bicuspid aortic valve and coarctation. G-banding cytogenetic analysis of peripheral blood showed mosaicism with two cell lines (45,X[17]/47,XX,+8[33]). FISH analysis indicated that 15% of the cells were of monosomy X karyotype and 85% of the cells were with XX karyotype and trisomy 8 was detected only in XX cells. Though the patient exhibited clinical features of Turner syndrome, somatic stigmas present were not clearly distinguishable from those of trisomy 8, such as short stature, skeletal and cardiac abnormalities. Observations from most of the double aneuploidy cases indicated that the patient's phenotype was not necessarily in correlation to the ratio of autosomal and sex chromosomal aberrations. Mosaicism in trisomy 8-Turner syndrome was rarely documented and we believe this is the first reported case of mosaicism in trisomy 8-Turner syndrome presenting with aortic dissection and surviving into adulthood.

Abstract
The present study investigated the role of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) activation in the migratory phenotype of human U2OS osteosarcoma (OS) cells in a collagen matrix. The activation of ERK was inhibited by PD98059, a specific inhibitor of ERK kinase. Additionally, no significant differences were observed in the adhesion and proliferation of the cells with or without PD98059 treatment in collagen-coated dishes. The migratory capacity of the U2OS cells was then examined in non-coated and collagen-coated dishes, and the results depicted that collagen I enhanced the migration of the U2OS cells, the effect of which was significantly blocked by the treatment of the cells with PD98059. Furthermore, enhanced gene and protein expression of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP9), but not MMP2, was observed to be involved in the enhanced migratory phenotype of the U20S cells in the collagen-coated plates. This effect was partially abolished by the treatment of the cells in the collagen-coated dishes with ERK inhibitor. Collectively, the data demonstrate that ERK signaling is important for the migration of U2OS cells through the extracellular matrix (ECM), which is comprised mostly of collagen, by enhancing MMP9 production. These results may contribute to the regulation of MMP9 production in metastatic OS.

Abstract
The clinical course and outcome of isolated anastomotic leaks (IALs) after esophagectomy are significantly different from those of necrotic leaks. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical features, diagnosis, treatment, and long-term outcome in patients with IALs after esophagectomy with reconstruction for esophageal cancer. A total of 663 patients underwent esophagectomy with esophageal reconstruction because of esophageal cancer between 2000 and 2010 at the Seoul Asan Medical Center. IALs occurred in 23 patients (3.5%). All patients with IAL were male, with a median age of 61 years. Patients with IAL were divided into three groups based on their clinical course. group A comprised patients who had definite clinical symptoms and/or signs indicating mediastinal contamination or leak before routine contrast esophagography was performed. Groups B and C comprised patients who had no definite clinical symptoms and/or signs of leaks before the routine contrast examination. Furthermore, group B contained those patients who resumed oral intake because no leak was found in the routine contrast examination and was diagnosed some days after resuming oral intake. Group C contained those patients who kept fasting because the leak was found in the routine contrast examination. The median follow-up period was 30 months. The mean time to closure of the IAL was 70.1 ± 96.0 days (range 4-364). There was a 72.7% overall closure rate within 60 days. By univariate analysis, the mean time to closure of the IAL was found to be significantly longer for group A patients or in cases where the patients had an uncontained leak, leukocytosis, or empyema. However, there was no statistically significant differences in age, neoadjuvant treatment, site of anastomosis (cervical vs. thoracic), fever, or treatment of the leak. By multivariate analysis, group A was found to be an independent predictive factor for the time to closure of the IAL. Repeat contrast studies revealed no anastomotic leaks in 18 patients and the formation of contained fistula in four cases (excluding one patient who died in hospital). The four patients with a contained fistula showed no clinical symptoms or signs, and tolerated resumed oral intake. IALs were resolved in most cases with low leak-related mortality, and resolution of the leaks occurred within 2 months in the majority of patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the feasibility and safety of thoracoscopic thymectomy with conventional sternotomy thymectomy for thymoma without myasthenia gravis. METHODS Data from 70 patients diagnosed with thymoma, who underwent thoracoscopic thymectomy (n = 25, Group T) or sternotomy thymectomy (n = 45, Group S) between March 2002 and March 2008, were retrospectively evaluated. RESULTS Mean follow-up durations were 78.0 ± 21.9 months and 70.0 ± 23.6 months in Groups T and S, respectively. No deaths occurred in Group T; seven deaths occurred in Group S, all > 1 month post follow-up. Durations of chest intubation and hospitalization were significantly shorter in Group T than in Group S. No significant between-group difference in the incidence of operative complications was observed. Tumour recurrence-free rates at 5 and 7 years postsurgery were 96% (both years) in Group T and 95% (both years) in Group S. CONCLUSIONS Long-term follow-up indicates that thoracoscopic thymectomy for thymoma without myasthenia gravis is effective and is well tolerated, and associated with low rates of operative complications and recurrence.

Abstract
Laser sintering of metal nanoparticles is a key technology for high-performance printed electronics fabricated on heat-sensitive substrates such as glass or plastic. Although laser-sintered electronic devices have been successfully fabricated, the role of the induced temperature field in the laser sintering process has not been reported thus far. In this work, the effect of temperature on the laser sintering process is described for the first time using a two-dimensional transient heat conduction equation for inkjet-printed silver nanoparticle ink. The in situ electrical resistance was measured to estimate the transient thermal conductivity and hence the temperature of the sintered ink during the laser sintering process. To verify the estimated laser sintering temperature, the morphology of furnace-sintered silver nanoparticle ink was compared with that of laser-sintered ink. The electrical characteristics and surface morphology of laser-sintered ink are found to be related to the process temperature.

Abstract
In 2009, pandemic influenza A (H1N1) virus (H1N1 09) started to spread quickly in many countries. It causes respiratory infection with signs and symptoms of common infectious agents. Thus, clinicians sometimes may miss the H1N1 patient. Clinical laboratory tests are important for the diagnosis of the H1N1 infection. There are several tests available, however, the rapid test and direct fluorescence antigen test are unable to rule out the influenza virus infection and viral culture test is time consuming. Therefore, nucleic acid amplification techniques based on reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction assays are regarded as a specific diagnosis to confirm the influenza virus infection. Although the nucleic acid-based techniques are highly sensitive and specific, the high mutation rate of the influenza RNA-dependent RNA polymerase could limit the utility of the techniques. In addition, their use depends on the availability, cost and throughput of the diagnostic techniques. To overcome these drawbacks, evaluation and development of the techniques should be continued. This review provides an overview of various techniques for specific diagnosis of influenza infection.

Abstract
Endotracheal intubation is often necessary for positive pressure ventilation of rats during open thoracic surgery. Since endotracheal intubation in rats is technically difficult and is associated with numerous complications, many techniques using various devices have been described in the scientific literature. In this study, we compared the effectiveness of airway management of a home-made supraglottic airway device (SAD), which is cheap to fabricate and easy to place with that of an endotracheal intubation tube in enflurane-anaesthetized rats. Twenty male Sprague-Dawley rats (200-300 g) were randomly assigned to two equal groups for positive pressure mechanical ventilation using either the SAD or an endotracheal intubation tube. The carotid artery of each rat was cannulated for continuous blood pressure measurements and obtaining blood samples for determination of oxygen tension, carbon dioxide tension, and blood acidity before, during and after SAD placement or endotracheal intubation. Proper placement of the SAD was confirmed by observing chest wall movements that coincided with the operation of the mechanical ventilator. No complications and adverse events were encountered in the rats in which the SAD was placed, during SAD placement and immediate removal, during their mechanical ventilation through the SAD, and one week after SAD removal. From the results of blood gas analyses, we conclude that anaesthetized rats can be successfully ventilated using an SAD for open thoracic surgery.

Abstract
We evaluated the involvement of collagen and their discoidin domain receptors (DDRs), DDR1 and DDR2, on the activation of human monocyte-derived dendritic cells (hDCs). DDR2 was markedly expressed on mature hDCs in comparison to immature ones. Collagen I enhanced the release of IL-12p40, TNF-α and IFN-γ by hDCs. Additionally, hDCs exhibited enhanced expression of costimulatory molecules, and potent functional activities which, in turn, has therapeutic value. Interestingly, DDR2 depletion showed decrease in capacity of hDCs to stimulate T cells proliferation, whereas DDR1 silencing had no significant affect. These data demonstrate that DDR2 enhances hDCs activation and contributes to their functional activities. In addition, application of collagen I treated dendritic cells (DCs) vaccine reduced tumor burden giving longer survival in melanoma mice. Our study suggests that collagen I may enhance functional activities of DCs in immune response.
