Abstract
The electron shakeoff probability of 6Li2+ ions resulting from the β- decay of 6He+ ions has been measured with high precision using a specially designed recoil ion spectrometer. This is the first measurement of a pure electron shakeoff following nuclear β decay, not affected by multielectron processes such as Auger cascades. In this ideal textbook case for the application of the sudden approximation, the experimental ionization probability was found to be P(so)(exp)=0.02339(36) in perfect agreement with simple quantum mechanical calculations.

Abstract
In oral orthodontic treatments, achievement of a good adhesion between brackets and teeth surfaces is essential. One way to increase adhesion is to apply a surface treatment of teeth facing surfaces through the projection of abrasive particles to produce a surface roughness which improves adhesion of the bracket to the tooth, because of the significantly increased contact between the two surfaces. The effect on adhesion through the use of this technique in different types of brackets, as well as through the use of different blasting particles, however, is yet not well described. In this study we have included three types of brackets which are commonly used in orthodontic therapies (two of them a mesh-type and the third one a micro-milled type) with a contact surface area of 11.16, 8.85 and 6.89 mm(2) respectively. These brackets were used combined with a sandblasting treatment with two different types of abrasive particles, alumina (Al(2)O(3)) and silicon carbide (SiC) and applied to natural teeth in vitro. The abrasive particles used are bio-compatible and usually used in achieving increased roughness for improved adherence in biomedical materials. Sandblasting was performed at 2 bars for 2 s; three particle sizes were used: 80, 200 and 600 μm. Non-blasted samples were used as control. Each of the pieces were cemented to natural teeth with a self-curing composite. Samples were stored in physiologic serum at 5°C temperature. Tensile tests were performed with a universal testing machine. Brackets treated with sandblasted particles were measured to have an increased adhesion as compared to the control sample. The highest bond strength was measured for samples sandblasted with alumina particles of 80 and 200 μm combined with micro-milled brackets. The recorded stresses did not exceed the tensile strength of tooth enamel.

Abstract
Bovine Group A Rotavirus (RVA) is one of the main causes of neonatal calf diarrhea worldwide. The present study reports the genotyping of bovine RVA strains circulating in Argentinean cattle from 2004 to 2010. Additionally, a new set of typing primers was designed and tested to differentiate between G8 and G6 (lineage III and IV) RVA strains. Bovine RVA was detected in 30% (435/1462) of the tested samples, corresponding to 49% (207/423) of the studied outbreaks with a similar detection rates in beef (53%; 67/127) and dairy herds (52%; 65/126). The RVA strains circulating in Argentinean cattle belonged to the common bovine genotypes G6 (lineages III and IV), G8, G10, P[5] and P[11]. A different RVA G/P-genotype distribution was found between the exploitation types, with the combination G6(IV)P[5] being by fare the most prevalent RVA strain in beef herds (58%), whereas a more even distribution of G6(III)P[11] (15%), G10P[11] (17%), G6(IV)P[5] (14%), and G6(IV)P[11] (6%) RVA strains was detected in dairy herds. G8 RVA strains were found in two dairy farms in calves co-infected with G8+G6(III)P[11]. A high percentage of co-infections and co-circulation of RVA strains with different genotypes during the same outbreak were registered in both exploitation types (20% of the outbreaks from beef herds and 23% from dairy herds), indicating a potential environment for reassortment. This finding is significant because G10P[11] and G6(III)P[11] strains may possess zoonotic potential. Continuous surveillance of the RVA strains circulating in livestock provides valuable information for a better understanding of rotavirus ecology and epidemiology.

Abstract
Salinomys delicatus is considered a rare species due to its restricted and patchy distribution, poor records and low abundances. It is also the phyllotine with the lowest known diploid chromosome number (2n = 18), however its sex chromosome system has never been described. Here, we studied the chromosomes of six females and three males with bands G, C, DAPI/CMA(3) and meiosis. In males, the chromosome number was 2n = 19, with one large metacentric X-chromosome and two medium-sized acrocentrics absent in females. The karyotype of females was the same as previously described (2n = 18, FN = 32), with X-chromosomes being metacentric and the largest elements of the complement. In males, the two acrocentrics and the large metacentric form a trivalent in meiotic prophase. This indicates that S. delicatus has XY(1)Y(2) sex chromosomes, which is confirmed by G and DAPI bands. Constitutive heterochromatin (CH) is restricted to small pericentromeric blocks in all chromosomes. The X-chromosome shows the largest block of centromeric CH, which could favor the establishment of this X-autosome translocation. This sex chromosome system is rare in mammals and, compared with other phyllotine rodents, S. delicatus seems to have undergone a major chromosome restructuring during its karyotypic evolution.

Abstract
Recent expert reviews recommend a conservative surgical strategy - debridement and irrigation, antibiotics and implant retention (DAIR) - for most early post-surgical prosthetic joint infections (PJI). However, differences exist in published series regarding success rates with DAIR, and the size of most series is small. In this prospective multicenter cohort study of early PJI managed by DAIR, factors associated with failure of the DAIR were analyzed. Out of 139 early PJI, 117 cases managed with DAIR were studied For 67 patients (57.3%), infection was cured and the implant was salvaged with definite antimicrobial therapy. In 35 (29.9%) DAIR failed and removal of the prosthesis was necessary during follow-up. Finally, 15 patients (12.8%) needed chronic suppressive antimicrobial therapy due to suspected or confirmed persistent infection. Infections due to methicillin-resistant S. aureus (72.7% failed; p 0.05) and those treated at one of the hospitals (80.0% failed; p <0.05) had worse outcomes, but only this last variable was associated with treatment failure following multivariate analysis. Seventy-four per cent of patients who were successfully treated by DAIR and only 32.7% of the failures were able to walk without help or with one stick at the last follow-up visit (p <0.05). In conclusion, a substantial proportion of patients with an early PJI may be successfully treated with DAIR and definite antimicrobial therapy. In more than half of these, the infection can be cured. Since identification of factors associated with failure of DAIR is not simple, we recommend offering DAIR to most patients with early PJI.

Abstract
Deubiquitinases (DUBs) have fundamental roles in the ubiquitin system through their ability to specifically deconjugate ubiquitin from targeted proteins. The human genome encodes at least 98 DUBs, which can be grouped into 6 families, reflecting the need for specificity in their function. The activity of these enzymes affects the turnover rate, activation, recycling and localization of multiple proteins, which in turn is essential for cell homeostasis, protein stability and a wide range of signaling pathways. Consistent with this, altered DUB function has been related to several diseases, including cancer. Thus, multiple DUBs have been classified as oncogenes or tumor suppressors because of their regulatory functions on the activity of other proteins involved in tumor development. Therefore, recent studies have focused on pharmacological intervention on DUB activity as a rationale to search for novel anticancer drugs. This strategy may benefit from our current knowledge of the physiological regulatory mechanisms of these enzymes and the fact that growth of several tumors depends on the normal activity of certain DUBs. Further understanding of these processes may provide answers to multiple remaining questions on DUB functions and lead to the development of DUB-targeting strategies to expand the repertoire of molecular therapies against cancer.

Abstract
AIMS The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of microcalorimetry in rapid detection of mycobacterium species using an inexpensive Isothermal microcalorimetry (IMC) instrument. In addition, we compared microcalorimetry with conventional monitoring techniques. METHODS AND RESULTS Isothermal microcalorimetry measures heat production rate and can provide rapid detection of living mycobacteria in clinical specimens. Using liquid medium showed that bacterial activity measured by IMC using a TAM Air® agreed with the triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) assay. Using solid medium to enhance growth, fast-growing mycobacteria detection was achieved between 26 and 53 h and slow-growing mycobacteria detection was achieved between 54 and 298 h. In addition, the calorimetric data were analysed to estimate the growth rate and generation time of the mycobacteria monitored. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY Infections caused by mycobacteria are severe and difficult to treat. With 9·27 million new cases of tuberculosis in 2007, developing countries experience severe health and economic consequences owing to the lack of an affordable, fast detection method. Research-grade IMC instruments are too expensive to use in developing countries. Our study demonstrates that less-expensive instruments such as the TAM air® are adequate for mycobacteria detection and therefore establishes a clear proof of concept.

Abstract
Although Candida albicans (CA) is the most common cause of Candida bloodstream infections (BSIs), recent studies have observed an increasing percentage of candidaemias caused by non-albicans Candida species (NAC). In the present study, we attempted to identify the predictors of candidaemia due to NAC compared to CA. We analyzed data from an active population-based surveillance in Barcelona (Spain) from January 2002 to December 2003. Factors associated with NAC fungaemia were determined by multivariate analysis. A total of 339 episodes of Candida BSI, in 336 patients (median age 63 years, interquartile range: 41-72 years), were included. CA was the most commonly isolated (52%), followed by Candida parapsilosis (23%), Candida tropicalis (10%), Candida glabrata (8.6%), Candida krusei (3.4%) and other NAC spp. (3%).Overall, 48% of cases were due to NAC spp. Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified factors associated with a risk of BSI due to NAC spp.: having received a haematologic transplant (OR 10.8; 95% CI 1.31-90.01; p 0.027), previous fluconazole exposure (OR 4.47; 95% CI 2.12-9.43; p <0.001) and neonatal age (OR 4.42; 95% CI 1.63-12.04; p 0.004). Conversely, previous CA colonization (OR 0.33; 95% CI 0.19-0.57; p 0.001) and previous antibiotic use (OR 0.42; 95% CI 0.21-0.85; p 0.017) were associated with CA fungaemia compared to NAC. In conclusion, NAC candidaemia comprised 48% of cases in our series. Predictors of NAC include having received a haematologic transplant, neonatal age and previous fluconazole use.

Abstract
The masses of ten proton-rich nuclides, including the N=Z+1 nuclides ⁸⁵Mo and ⁸⁷Tc, were measured with the Penning trap mass spectrometer SHIPTRAP. Compared to the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2003 a systematic shift of the mass surface by up to 1.6 MeV is observed causing significant abundance changes of the ashes of astrophysical x-ray bursts. Surprisingly low α separation energies for neutron-deficient Mo and Tc are found, making the formation of a ZrNb cycle in the rp process possible. Such a cycle would impose an upper temperature limit for the synthesis of elements beyond Nb in the rp process.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with pollinosis show allergic symptoms related to airborne pollen levels, although this association is not always close. The use of new diagnostic techniques could improve our knowledge of this relationship. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the relationship between pollen counts and the results obtained using 2 diagnostic techniques: the skin prick test and allergen-specific immunoglobulin E (slgE) concentrations in serum. METHODS Sixty-eight pollen-allergic patients were diagnosed using a combination of the high-capacity screening approach ADVIA Centaur with a panel of 13 purified allergens and a skin prick test (SPT) with conventional extracts. Pollen levels were obtained by means of a volumetric sampler. RESULTS The highest percentages of sensitization were detected for grass mixture allergens and major recombinant grass allergens (Phl p 1 and Phi p 5), followed by olive tree extracts and olive allergens (Ole e 1 and Ole e 9), in SPT and using recombinant allergens, respectively. The main pollen types registered in the atmosphere during 2006 and 2007 were Quercus, Poaceae, and Cupressaceae. A statistically significant correlation was observed between total pollen levels and median values of slgE, especially in 2007. CONCLUSION A strong and significant positive correlation was found between pollen counts and slgE levels. This correlation was weaker in the case of SPT and airborne pollen.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To review the compliance of the European Working Time Directive (EWTD) in different teaching hospitals across Europe and its consequences upon training. STUDY DESIGN It is an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study. The sample is constituted by the answers from trainees selected by the representatives of 29 European Network of Trainees in Ob/Gyn (ENTOG) member countries to a survey designed by ENTOG Executive. The survey content was based on a joint survey by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) and the Royal College for Paediatrics (RCP), carried out in 2008, but adapted for use on a European level. RESULTS An answer rate of 75% was obtained. Only 5 countries out of 29 were compliant with EWTD two months before the compulsory adherence. Countries needed to introduce 1 to 4 changes to the system to make the rotas -compliant. Positive effect on work and private life balance was noticed in 87% from all responses. Trainees notice the need to further improve training programmes in order to have the same quality of training and continuous care of patients. CONCLUSIONS Steps forward to implement EWTD are being made. Trainees should be involved with the introduction to optimize training conditions under the EWTD. Countries that still struggle to introduce the directive may learn from countries that already are compliant. It is suggested to organize a survey on senior society level to gain additional information to further investigate the effects on training quality and patient care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND neoadjuvant chemotherapy has shown a modest benefit in muscle-invasive bladder cancer patients; however, the subset of patients most likely to benefit has not been identified. BRCA1 plays a central role in DNA repair pathways and low BRCA1 expression has been associated with sensitivity to cisplatin and longer survival in lung and ovarian cancer patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS we assessed BRCA1 messenger RNA expression levels in paraffin-embedded pre-treatment tumor samples obtained by transurethral resection from 57 patients with locally advanced bladder cancer subsequently treated with neoadjuvant cisplatin-based chemotherapy. BRCA1 levels were divided into terciles and correlated with pathological response and survival. RESULTS a significant pathological response (pT0-1) was attained in 66% (24 of 39) of patients with low/intermediate BRCA1 levels compared with 22% (4 of 18) of patients with high BRCA1 levels (P = 0.01). Median survival was 168 months in patients with low/intermediate levels and 34 months in patients with high BRCA1 levels (P = 0.002). In the multivariate analysis for survival, only BRCA1 expression levels and lymphovascular invasion emerged as independent prognostic factors. CONCLUSIONS our data suggest that BRCA1 expression may predict the efficacy of cisplatin-based neoadjuvant chemotherapy and may help to customize therapy in bladder cancer patients.

Abstract
ENTOG is the European Network of Trainees in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. This organization aims to represent all European trainee organisations in obstetrics and gynaecology and speaks out on their behalf. Trainees in obstetrics and gynaecology have officially organised meetings for European trainees since 1992, but it was only in 1997 in Athens, that the first ENTOG Council took place. In order to understand each other better and appreciate differences in training, an annual four-day exchange program and a meeting were created to discuss topics related to training and harmonisation, which is the core activity of ENTOG. With the continuous support from the European Board & College of -Obstetrics and Gynaecology (EBCOG), the network had an exponential growth in the past few years, as shown by the increasing number of countries and trainees represented by ENTOG, as well as by all the training-related published material and newly developed projects for trainees, including those of an intercontinental nature.

Abstract
The interest to produce negative osmium ions is manifold in the realm of high-accuracy ion trap experiments: high-resolution nearly Doppler-free laser spectroscopy, antihydrogen formation in its ground state, and contributions to neutrino mass spectrometry. Production of these ions is generally accomplished by sputtering an Os sample with Cs(+) ions at tens of keV. Though this is a well-established method commonly used at accelerators, these kind of sources are quite demanding and tricky to operate. Therefore, the development of a more straightforward and cost effective production scheme will be of benefit for ion trap and other experiments. Such a scheme makes use of desorption and ionization with pulsed lasers and identification of the ions by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. First investigations of negative osmium ion production using a pulsed laser for desorption and ionization and a commercial matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight system for identification has demonstrated the suitability of this technique. More than 10(3) negative osmium ions per shot were registered after bombarding pure osmium powder with a 5 ns pulse width Nd:yttrium aluminum garnet laser. The limitation in the ion number was imposed by the detection limit of the microchannel plate detector.

Abstract
We demonstrate that abundant quantities of short-lived beta unstable ions can be trapped in a novel transparent Paul trap and that their decay products can directly be detected in coincidence. Low energy 6He+ (807 ms half-life) ions were extracted from the SPIRAL source at GANIL, then decelerated, cooled, and bunched by means of the buffer gas cooling technique. More than 10(8) ions have been stored over a measuring period of six days, and about 10(5) decay coincidences between the beta particles and the 6Li++ recoiling ions have been recorded. The technique can be extended to other short-lived species, opening new possibilities for trap assisted decay experiments.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the usefulness of (99m)Tc-Sulphur colloid when combined with leukocyte scintigraphy in suspected prosthetic hip infection, comparing the results with information from (99m)Tc-HMPAO-leukocyte scintigraphy alone. MATERIALS AND METHODS Seventy patients (42 women, 28 men; mean age 68 +/- 13 years) with painful hip prostheses and suspicion of infection were evaluated prospectively. All patients had bone scintigraphy, (99m)Tc-HMPAO-labelled white blood cell scintigraphy and (99m)Tc-Sulphur colloid bone marrow scintigraphy. ESR and CRP levels were measured in all patients. The final diagnosis was made with microbiological findings or by clinical follow up of at least 12 months. RESULTS Infections were diagnosed in 12 of the 70 patients (3 coagulase-negative Staphylococcus, 2 Staphylococcus aureus, 2 Staphylococcus epidermidis, 2 enterococcus and 3 polymicrobial agents). ESR and CRP values were higher in patients with infection than in patients without infection (51.8 +/- 29.4 vs. 25.4 +/- 16.4 and 2.8 +/- 2.2 vs. 1.1 +/- 1.3, respectively; p < 0.05). Bone scintigraphy did not show a characteristic pattern to differentiate infection from aseptic loosening. The pool phase of the bone scintigraphy was positive in only 3/12 patients with infection (25 %). Sensitivity and specificity of the leukocyte scintigraphy was 83 % and 57 %, respectively. When the results of the bone marrow scintigraphy were added, these values increased to 92 % and 98 %, respectively. CONCLUSION Performing bone marrow scintigraphy significantly improves results when compared with leukocyte scintigraphy alone in the diagnosis of infected hip prostheses. Bone scintigraphy did not help to differentiate aseptic loosening from infection in this series.
