Abstract
We present a method to analyze the coupling of lateral displacements in nanoscale structures, in particular waveguide grating mirrors (WGMs), into the phase of a reflected Gaussian beam using a finite-difference time-domain simulation. Such phase noise is of interest for using WGMs in high-precision interferometry. We show that, to the precision of our simulations (10(-7) rad), waveguide mirrors do not couple lateral displacement into phase noise of a reflected beam and that WGMs are therefore not subject to the same stringent alignment requirements as previously proposed layouts using diffraction gratings.

Abstract
The gravitational-wave (GW) sky may include nearby pointlike sources as well as stochastic backgrounds. We perform two directional searches for persistent GWs using data from the LIGO S5 science run: one optimized for pointlike sources and one for arbitrary extended sources. Finding no evidence to support the detection of GWs, we present 90% confidence level (C.L.) upper-limit maps of GW strain power with typical values between 2-20×10(-50) strain(2) Hz(-1) and 5-35×10(-49) strain(2) Hz(-1) sr(-1) for pointlike and extended sources, respectively. The latter result is the first of its kind. We also set 90% C.L. limits on the narrow-band root-mean-square GW strain from interesting targets including Sco X-1, SN 1987A and the Galactic center as low as ≈7×10(-25) in the most sensitive frequency range near 160 Hz.

Abstract
The placenta is a major barrier that prevents potentially infectious agents from causing fetal diseases or related complications during pregnancy. Therefore, we postulated that the placenta might express a broad repertoire of antimicrobial proteins as well as inflammatory chemokines and cytokines to combat invading microorganisms. Here we demonstrate that placental cells indeed express a wide range of AMPs (antimicrobial peptides and proteins) including bactericidal/permeability-increasing protein (BPI), secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor (SLPI), human β-defensin 2 (hBD2), acyloxyacyl hydrolase (AOAH), and cathelicidin (CAP18). In addition, these cells also secrete pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines upon stimulation with bacterial ligands. Notably, we show that BPI expression by placental cells could be completely attributed to granulocytes while highly purified placental trophoblasts expressed only a subset of the AMPs like SLPI. Unexpectedly, trophoblast AMPs did not exhibit inducible secretion in response to various TLR ligands and further investigations showed that the unresponsiveness of trophoblasts to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was due to a lack of TLR4 expression. In summary, we have shown that the expression of different AMPs can be allocated to various cells in the placenta and the repertoire of the AMPs expressed by placental cells is a result of a cooperation of leukocytes as well as cells from embryonic origin.

Abstract
We show a comparative study of the TiO2 ALD with TTIP and either O2 or O2-plasma on Si/SiO2 substrates. In particular we compare the surface morphology and crystalline phase by means of Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) for different O2-plasma procedures upon changing the time between cycles and the N2-purging pressure. The AFM images show that already these parameters may induce structural changes in the TiO2 films grown by ALD, with the formation of crystallites with average lateral width varying between 15 and 80 nm. By means of XAS we also found that the crystallites have mixed anatase and rutile crystalline phases and that smaller crystallites have a greater rutile component than the larger ones.

Abstract
Gratings enable light coupling into an optical cavity without transmission through any substrate. This concept reduces light absorption and substrate heating and was suggested for light coupling into the arm cavities of future gravitational wave detectors. One particularly interesting approach is based on all-reflective gratings with low diffraction efficiencies and three diffraction orders (three ports). However, it was discovered that, generally, three-port grating coupled cavities show an asymmetric resonance profile that results in asymmetric and low quality Pound-Drever-Hall error signals for cavity length control. We experimentally demonstrate that this problem is solved by the detection of light at both reflection ports of the cavity and the postprocessing of the two demodulated electronic signals.

Abstract
We demonstrate the optical coupling of two cavities without light transmission through a substrate. As the all-reflective coupling component, we use a dielectric low-efficiency 3-port diffraction grating. In contrast to a conventional transmissive coupling component, such an all-reflective coupler avoids all thermal effects that are associated with light absorption in the substrate. An all-reflective scheme for cavity coupling is of interest in the field of gravitational wave detection. In such detectors light that is resonantly enhanced inside the so-called power-recycling cavity is coupled to (kilometre-scale) Fabry-Perot resonators representing the arms of a Michelson interferometer. We realized such an all-reflective coupling in a table-top experiment. Our findings are in qualitative agreement with the theoretical model incorporating the characteristics of the 3-port grating used, and therefore encourage the application of all-reflective cavity couplers in future gravitational wave detectors.

Abstract
We report on the first demonstration of a fully suspended 10 m Fabry-Perot cavity incorporating a waveguide grating as the coupling mirror. The cavity was kept on resonance by reading out the length fluctuations via the Pound-Drever-Hall method and employing feedback to the laser frequency. From the achieved finesse of 790 the grating reflectivity was determined to exceed 99.2% at the laser wavelength of 1064 nm, which is in good agreement with rigorous simulations. Our waveguide grating design was based on tantala and fused silica and included a ≈ 20 nm thin etch stop layer made of Al2O3 that allowed us to define the grating depth accurately and preserve the waveguide thickness during the fabrication process. Demonstrating stable operation of a waveguide grating featuring high reflectivity in a suspended low-noise cavity, our work paves the way for the potential application of waveguide gratings as mirrors in high-precision interferometry, for instance in future gravitational wave observatories.

Abstract
Acute and chronic inflammatory disorders are characterized by detrimental cytokine and chemokine expression. Frequently, the chemotactic activity of cytokines depends on a modified N-terminus of the polypeptide. Among those, the N-terminus of monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (CCL2 and MCP-1) is modified to a pyroglutamate (pE-) residue protecting against degradation in vivo. Here, we show that the N-terminal pE-formation depends on glutaminyl cyclase activity. The pE-residue increases stability against N-terminal degradation by aminopeptidases and improves receptor activation and signal transduction in vitro. Genetic ablation of the glutaminyl cyclase iso-enzymes QC (QPCT) or isoQC (QPCTL) revealed a major role of isoQC for pE1-CCL2 formation and monocyte infiltration. Consistently, administration of QC-inhibitors in inflammatory models, such as thioglycollate-induced peritonitis reduced monocyte infiltration. The pharmacologic efficacy of QC/isoQC-inhibition was assessed in accelerated atherosclerosis in ApoE3*Leiden mice, showing attenuated atherosclerotic pathology following chronic oral treatment. Current strategies targeting CCL2 are mainly based on antibodies or spiegelmers. The application of small, orally available inhibitors of glutaminyl cyclases represents an alternative therapeutic strategy to treat CCL2-driven disorders such as atherosclerosis/restenosis and fibrosis.

Abstract
All-reflective optical systems are under consideration for future gravitational wave detector topologies. A key feature of these all-reflective systems is the use of Fabry-Perot cavities with diffraction gratings as input couplers; however, theory predicts and experiment has shown that translation of the grating surface across the incident laser light will introduce additional phase into the system. This translation can be induced through simple side-to-side motion of the coupler, yaw motion of the coupler around a central point (i.e., rotation about a vertical axis), and even via internal resonances (i.e., vibration) of the optical element. In this Letter we demonstrate on a prototype-scale suspended cavity that conventional cavity length-sensing techniques used to detect longitudinal changes along the cavity axis will also be sensitive to translational, rotational, and vibrational motion of the diffractive input coupler. We also experimentally verify the amplitude response and frequency dependency of the noise coupling as given by theory.

Abstract
Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) is a risk factor for HIV-1 infection. We characterized HSV-2 serology assay performance in HIV-positive and HIV-negative Africans. Serostatus for HSV-2 and HIV-1 was determined in 493 serum specimens stored from a community HSV-2 prevalence survey in Kampala, Uganda. HSV-2 serology by Focus HerpeSelect ELISA, Biokit HSV-2 rapid assay and Kalon HSV-2 was compared with HSV-2 Western blot (WB) according to HIV-1 serostatus. Sensitivity/specificity was: 99.5%/70.2% for Focus, 97.0%/86.4% for Biokit and 97.5%/96.2% for Kalon. Focus with Biokit confirmation improved sensitivity/specificity (99.4%/96.8%, respectively). Use of a higher Focus index value cut-off of 2.2 instead of 1.1 increased specificity from 70.2% to 92.4%. Kalon had higher specificity than Focus (P < 0.001). Of commercially available HSV-2 serological assays, Kalon alone, or Focus ELISA followed by Biokit confirmation perform best. Improved HSV-2 assays are needed for HSV-2 and HIV-1 public health activities in Africa.

Abstract
We propose a monolithic narrowband guided-mode grating filter in fused silica that is widely tunable in the near-IR wavelength region. Based on a recently demonstrated approach for a monolithic reflector comprising an encapsulated grating, we theoretically investigate such a device by means of rigorous modeling aimed at a narrow linewidth. It is demonstrated that upon a spatial variation of the filter's grating period its resonance wavelength can be tuned in a remarkably wide range of near-IR radiation with 800 nm<λ(res)< 1600 nm by translating the laser beam relative to the grating area. The filter performance in terms of linewidth and contrast is essentially preserved over the entire tuning interval.

Abstract
BACKGROUND During a period of 12 months 7 newborns with a partially severe fetopathy caused most probably by maternal sartan-intake in pregnancy were treated in 5 German teaching hospitals. Sartans antagonize the effect of angiotensin II at the AT1-receptor and are used to treat arterial hypertension. METHOD We presented 2 cases at the yearly GNPI meeting 2010 and we were informed about similar cases in other German teaching hospitals which we brought together in this publication. RESULTS In the presented cases, maternal sartan intake was noticed at different times in pregnancy and was in part discontinued some weeks before delivery. In all pregnancies oligohydramnios was present and fetal kidneys displayed a hyperechogenic structure on ultrasound. The newborns' postnatal course varied: oligohydramnios sequence with lung hypoplasia, arterial hypotension and renal insufficiency were the predominant problems of the first days of life. The majority (4/7) of infants did not survive this period, in other cases there was a complete (1/7) recovery of renal function whereas others survived with renal impairment (2/7), in part requiring chronic dialysis. Further distinctive features seen frequently were disturbances of cranial ossification and flaccid paralysis of hands and feet with deviations as well as sensorineural hearing loss. CONCLUSION These case reports again underline the hazardousness of maternal sartan intake with potential fatal outcome for the newborn. Though the use of sartans in pregnancy is contraindicated and several case reports of sartan induced fetopathies exist, the risk of sartan treatment generally seems to be underestimated.
