Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Feasibility of brain atrophy measurement in patients with MS in clinical routine, without prior standardization of the MRI protocol, is unknown. Our aim was to investigate the feasibility of brain atrophy measurement in patients with MS in clinical routine. MATERIALS AND METHODS Multiple Sclerosis and Clinical Outcome and MR Imaging in the United States (MS-MRIUS) is a multicenter (33 sites), retrospective study that included patients with relapsing-remitting MS who began treatment with fingolimod. Brain MR imaging examinations previously acquired at the baseline and follow-up periods on 1.5T or 3T scanners with no prior standardization were used, to resemble a real-world situation. Brain atrophy outcomes included the percentage brain volume change measured by structural image evaluation with normalization of atrophy on 2D-T1-weighted imaging and 3D-T1WI and the percentage lateral ventricle volume change, measured by VIENA on 2D-T1WI and 3D-T1WI and NeuroSTREAM on T2-fluid-attenuated inversion recovery examinations. RESULTS A total of 590 patients, followed for 16 months, were included. There were 585 (99.2%) T2-FLAIR, 425 (72%) 2D-T1WI, and 166 (28.2%) 3D-T1WI longitudinal pairs of examinations available. Excluding MR imaging examinations with scanner changes, the analyses were available on 388 (65.8%) patients on T2-FLAIR for the percentage lateral ventricle volume change, 259 and 257 (43.9% and 43.6%, respectively) on 2D-T1WI for the percentage brain volume change and the percentage lateral ventricle volume change, and 110 (18.6%) on 3D-T1WI for the percentage brain volume change and percentage lateral ventricle volume change. The median annualized percentage brain volume change was -0.31% on 2D-T1WI and -0.38% on 3D-T1WI. The median annualized percentage lateral ventricle volume change was 0.95% on 2D-T1WI, 1.47% on 3D-T1WI, and 0.90% on T2-FLAIR. CONCLUSIONS Brain atrophy was more readily assessed by estimating the percentage lateral ventricle volume change on T2-FLAIR compared with the percentage brain volume change or percentage lateral ventricle volume change using 2D- or 3D-T1WI in this observational retrospective study. Although measurement of the percentage brain volume change on 3D-T1WI remains the criterion standard and should be encouraged in future prospective studies, T2-FLAIR-derived percentage lateral ventricle volume change may be a more feasible surrogate when historical or other practical constraints limit the availability of percentage brain volume change on 3D-T1WI.

Abstract
Nitric oxide (NO) is generated from arginine and oxygen via NO synthase (NOS). Staphylococcus aureus NOS (saNOS) has previously been shown to affect virulence and resistance to exogenous oxidative stress, yet the exact mechanism is unknown. Herein, a previously undescribed role of saNOS in S. aureus aerobic physiology was reported. Specifically, aerobic S. aureus nos mutant cultures presented with elevated endogenous reactive oxygen species (ROS) and superoxide levels, as well as increased membrane potential, increased respiratory dehydrogenase activity and slightly elevated oxygen consumption. Elevated ROS levels in the nos mutant likely resulted from altered respiratory function, as inhibition of NADH dehydrogenase brought ROS levels back to wild-type levels. These results indicate that, in addition to its recently reported role in regulating the switch to nitrate-based respiration during low-oxygen growth, saNOS also plays a modulatory role during aerobic respiration. Multiple transcriptional changes were also observed in the nos mutant, including elevated expression of genes associated with oxidative/nitrosative stress, anaerobic respiration and lactate metabolism. Targeted metabolomics revealed decreased cellular lactate levels, and altered levels of TCA cycle intermediates, the latter of which may be related to decreased aconitase activity. Collectively, these findings demonstrate a key contribution of saNOS to S. aureus aerobic respiratory metabolism.

Abstract
A cross-cultural translation of the Vespid Allergy Quality of Life Questionnaire (VQLQ) to the Portuguese population (VQLQ-P) was performed, assessing its applicability in wasp and in non-beekeeper bee venom allergic patients. Additionally, we evaluated a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) to estimate hymenoptera allergy interference with daily life. Methods. Cross-cultural translation was performed according to recommendations. The final VQLQ-P version, the Expectation of Outcome questionnaire (EoQ), EQ-5D and VAS were applied to wasp (n = 19) and non-beekeeper bee venom allergic patients (n = 30). Results. VQLQ-P significantly correlated with EoQ, (r = 0.76, p < 0.01), EQ-5D (usual activities and anxiety / depression dimensions) and VAS, with a good internal consistency (Cronbach α = 0.88) in wasp allergic individuals. VQLQ-P and EoQ correlation was also high (r = 0.67, p < 0.01) in bee allergy. Conclusion. The VQLQ-P is a valuable tool to evaluate quality of life impairment in Portuguese hymenoptera venom allergic individuals.

Abstract
IntroductionViolence against women, committed by an intimate partner, is a serious public health problem. On an international scope it has been researched the relation between intimate partner violence and cognitive aspects of aggressors.ObjectiveTo investigate if couples use violence to resolve conflicts and if there are differences in cognitive aspects of men in couples where there is intimate partner violence when compared to couples who have a harmonious relationship.MethodThe Revised Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS2) was used. The cognitive aspects of male partners was investigated by Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS-III), certain factors such as verbal and executive functions, to compare the testing results of men who have committed violence against their partners with those who did not.ResultsThirty-one couples with intimate partner violence police reports and 31 couples who, according to their own perceptions, said to maintain harmonious marital relationship. The comparisons between groups allowed observing that even among couples who judge to be in a peaceful relationship, violent behaviors were detected. These behaviors tend to be naturalized and not considered as violence by partners. In regard to men's cognitive aspects, especially those related to WAIS-III verbal skills and impulse control, they possibly exert some influence to intimate partner violence.ConclusionThe possible influence of cognitive aspects of the perpetrator on violence against women could be reduced through long-term actions, especially those concerned to early education, since this is the appropriate way to culturally change and to develop satisfactory social and cognitive skills of the individual.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Abstract
Background/introductionIt is widely known that attempted suicide is the main risk factor for suicide and repeated suicide attempts. However, there is a lack of evidence for follow-up interventions/treatments reducing suicidal behavior in this population. The aim of the present study was to describe a novel-therapy as a potential treatment with effectiveness in reducing suicidal behavior. On of the main objectives of this project is to potentiate the benefits of the usual treatment in patients with history of suicidal attempt.Description and method “To live” is a proposal of short psychotherapeutic intervention program for patients with recent suicide attempts. The participants were randomly allocated in two groups, one worked as our control group (n = 8), which had the usual treatment (individual outpatient care), and the other group (n = 8) underwent the usual treatment plus the experimental treatment. This treatment consists of a well structured program, in which participants receive eight group sessions followed by regular contact through telefonic calls over 12 months. In order to evaluate its impact and measure results, a set of structured interviews and clinical questionnaires have been applied in different times: time zero (before admission), time one (in the end of the intervention), time 2 (1month after intervention), then at each every 3 months over a 12 month follow up period.Results/conclusionBy the time this study was conducted, the experimental program was being administered, therefore no results could be taken. However, preliminary findings suggest the effectiveness of the program in reducing suicidal behavior in a real-world clinical setting.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Abstract
Conjunctival allergen provocation test (CAPT) reproduces the events occurring by instilling an allergen on the ocular surface. This paper is the compilation of a task force focussed on practical aspects of this technique based on the analysis of 131 papers. Main mechanisms involved are reviewed. Indications are diagnosing the allergen(s)-triggering symptoms in IgE-mediated ocular allergy in seasonal, acute or perennial forms of allergic conjunctivitis, especially when the relevance of the allergen is not obvious or in polysensitized patients. Contraindications are limited to ongoing systemic severe pathology, asthma and eye diseases. CAPT should be delayed if receiving systemic steroids or antihistamines. Local treatment should be interrupted according to the half-life of each drug. Prerequisites are as follows: obtaining informed consent; evidencing of an allergen by skin prick tests and/or serum-specific IgE dosages; being able to deal with an unlikely event such as acute asthma exacerbation, urticaria or anaphylaxis, or an exacerbation of allergic conjunctivitis. Allergen extracts should be diluted locally prior to administration. Positive criteria are based on itching or quoted according to a composite score. An alternative scoring is based on itching. CAPT remains underused in daily practice, although it is a safe and simple procedure which can provide valuable clinical information.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Undernutrition is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in infants and children worldwide. The aim of this study was to evaluate the nutritional status and their predictors in children from 0 to 5 years of age in São Tomé. STUDY DESIGN A cross-sectional study was conducted in São Tomé Island. METHODS A total of 1285 individuals were enrolled between January and May 2011. Children were measured, and height for age (HAZ), weight for height (WHZ) and body mass index (BAZ) Z-score were computed. Global acute undernutrition is defined as weight for height <-1 Z-score (wasting < -2 Z-scores) and global chronic undernutrition as length/height for age <-1 Z-score (stunting < -2 Z-scores). Relevant information was collected from individual health bulletins, namely gestational age and birth weight, as well as weight at 6, 12, 18 and 24 months for all individual above these ages. Mothers were invited to answer a specific questionnaire. RESULTS A high percentage of global acute undernutrition (30.9% in <24 months and 21.9% in ≥24 months) and global chronic undernutrition (32.5% in <24 months and 41.1% in ≥24 months) was observed. Appropriate birth weight for gestational age (AGA) is significantly associated with lower odds for both acute (OR 0.485 [95% CI 0.299-0.785]) and chronic undernutrition (OR 0.427 [95% CI 0.270-0.675]) in children >12 months. Weight gain above 0.67 Z-score in the first semester of life was strongly related to lower odds for both acute (OR 0.109 [95% CI 0.040-0.291]) and chronic undernutrition (OR 0.379 [95% CI 0.187-0.770]) in children >12 months of age. Similarly, mother's education seems to protect against acute (>12 months: OR 0.448 [95% CI 0.244-0.825]; >24 months: OR 0.186 [95% CI 0.064-0.540]) and chronic undernutrition (>12 months: OR 0.389 [95% CI 0.232-0.653]; >24 months: OR 0.324 [95% CI 0.171-0.625]). All logistic regressions were adjusted for all children (gender, age, gestational age, birth weight, breastfeeding, begin consumption alcohol), mothers (age, height, body mass index, educational level, number of previous pregnancies, smoking during pregnancy, alcohol consumption during pregnancy) and household (number of siblings and persons at home) variables included in the protocol. CONCLUSIONS Birth weight, nutritional status, and the mother's education and weight gain particularly in the first year of life were important factors protecting against undernutrition during infancy and childhood. These results emphasize the importance of women's nutrition and of adequate birth weight and particularly weight gain during the first year of life in order to prevent wasting and stunting in childhood.

Abstract
Food allergy is a health problem with significant negative impact in Quality of Life (QoL). We aimed to translate into Portuguese and culturally adapt to our population the Food Allergy Quality of Life Questionnaire - Parent Form (FAQLQ-PF). Cross-cultural translation was performed according to guidelines. Linguistic validation consisted in 3 steps: forward translation, backward translation and comprehensibility testing. A consensual version was obtained and tested in parents of food allergic children by cognitive debriefing. Twelve questionnaires were fulfilled, all completed in ≤ 15 min. No comments, doubts or suggestions were posed, except for 2 parents regarding a question about the number of food their children had to avoid. Two gave special positive feedback about the utility of FAQLQ-PF. Changes have been included after this pre-test in accordance to doubts and suggestions of participants, and the Portuguese version is now able to be used in clinics and research.

Abstract
The world today is more challenging than ever before. Discrimination, stigma, and ever-changing lifestyles are just a few examples of elements that have a profound impact on the mental health status of our global population. Even though the burden of mental illness is well documented and increasing, mental health remains a neglected area of health worldwide.Youth Associations, like the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) and the European Federation of Psychiatric Trainees (EFPT) recognize the importance of tackling this problem, taking an active role on promoting education in our communities, tackling stigma and advocating for more action. Medical students worldwide, from Slovenia, Australia, Lebanon, Brazil, Quebec and Grenada – among at least 42 other countries, organise expansive, creative and engaging mental health projects. With particular interest we can mention the winner of the last Rex Crossley Award, attributed to a Slovenian project ‘in Reflection’: a suicide prevention project, which tackles the different factors associated with vulnerable groups through a series of workshops and campaigns that seek to destigmatize the mental health problems and offer the opportunity to high school students to get the help they need. This talk will give an insight into strengths, weaknesses and challenges faced by youth in tackling mental health, specially in the role of the IFMSA, displaying some of our most interesting and innovative projects from future mental health leaders around the world, together with the initiatives of EFPT.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Abstract
IntroductionRecent studies point for an increased incidence of psychotic disorders among immigrants when compared to nom-immigrant population, with a substantial risk variation being observed among different ethnic minority groups and diverse host countries/societies.ObjectiveThis communication explores the relation between immigration and the onset of psychosis disease, namely the individual and socio-environmental factors implicated in this association.AimsAccessing the implications of immigration in the establishment of psychotic disorders.MethodsThe authors conducted a literary search on Medline and PsychInfo databases regarding the subject immigration and psychotic disorders, elaborating a bibliographic review of the topic.ResultsA greater incidence of psychotic disorders in immigrants (in comparison to nom-immigrant population) has been established. In actuality a range of studies carried out in different socio demographic contexts and with different ethnic groups (of immigrants) identify ethnicity, neighbourhood characteristics (namely level ethnic density), discrimination and refugee status, as some of the probable factors that modulate the rate of psychotic disorder and influence its incidence in immigrants.ConclusionsWith regard to the relationship between immigration and the development of psychosis, much is still to be understood. Future studies with focuses on different individual, social, cultural and demographic aspects need to be developed in order to better understand and addressed this phenomenon.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Abstract
IntroductionThe FMPS is a 35-item self-report questionnaire to measure perfectionism. It evaluates: concern over mistakes/CM, doubts about actions/DA, parental criticism/PC and expectations/PE, personal standards/PS and organization/O.ObjectivesTo develop a shortened version of FMPS and study its internal consistency, the construct, concurrent and divergent validity.MethodsOne hundred and ninety-two university students (78.1% females), aged 19.74 years (sd = 2.10) completed the Portuguese versions of the: FMPS, Hewitt and Flett MPS/H&FMPS, Life Orientation Test Revised/LOT-R, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory/STAI, and Profile of Mood States/POMS.ResultsCorrelations between each item and corrected FMPS total scores/corrected total subscales scores were ≥ 0.20 for the items 13, 15, 25, 31, 35 and 10, 2, 25, and 26, respectively. The internal consistency of FMPS was high (α: .857) with 32 items contributing for this consistency (exceptions: 13, 25 and 31). The principal component analysis of the 35 items with factors varimax rotation was performed. The three items with higher loading in each factor that also contributed to the FMPS reliability were selected for the FMPS shortened version (FMPS-18). The principal component analysis of the 18 items with factors varimax rotation showed that six factors explained 74.6% of FMPS-18 total variance. These factors revealed adequate internal consistency (α: O = 0.740; PC = 0.859; PE = 0.847; PS = 0.726; CM = 0.740; DA = 0.832; total = 0.768). Convergent correlations between FMPS and the matched FMPS-18 scores were 0.839 to 0.971 (all P < .01). Correlations of the FMPS-18 and FMPS with H&F-MPS, STAI, LOT-R and NA/PA scores were of similar significance and valence.ConclusionFMPS-18 is a brief, reliable and valid instrument to measure perfectionism.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Abstract
The irritation/discomfort associated with the use of contact lenses (CLs) is often related to the eyelid-lens friction. Although the use of such devices is widespread, the information about the influence of the lacrimal fluid biomolecules on the tribological behavior of the CLs hydrogels is scarce. In this work, we investigated the effect of the presence of albumin and cholesterol in the lubricant medium, on the frictional response of two model hydrogels for CLs: a hydroxyethylmethacrylate based hydrogel, HEMA/PVP, and a silicone based one, TRIS/NVP/HEMA. Tribological experiments were done in a nanotribometer, in water and in the presence of solutions of those biomolecules. It was observed a significant increase of the friction coefficient (μ) for HEMA/PVP when the lubricant contains cholesterol, and for TRIS/NVP/HEMA when it contains albumin. Solid-state NMR and DSC analysis revealed that HEMA/PVP hydrated in cholesterol solution has a lower amount of free and loosely bound water than the hydrogel hydrated in water. Therefore, a smaller amount of water shall be released into the contact region during the friction tests with cholesterol solution, leading to a thinner film in the contact zone, and consequently to a higher μ. Concerning TRIS/NVP/HEMA, QCM-D studies showed that this hydrogel adsorbs less albumin than HEMA/PVP and that the formed film is more rigid, which can explain the increase of μ. The obtained results contribute to understand the influence of lacrimal fluid composition on the tribological behavior of CLs materials, being relevant for the selection and optimization of these devices. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE Understanding the tribological behavior of contact lenses (CLs) materials in contact with the lacrimal fluid and the role of its components is of major importance to optimize the comfort and overall success of these devices. Nevertheless, the available information on this subject in the literature is scarce. In this work, the effect of albumin and cholesterol (two of the main components of the lacrimal fluid) on the frictional response of distinct types of hydrogels suitable for CLs, is compared, for the first time. Significant differences were observed with the two molecules, depending on the material, stressing the need to further study this issue to understand, predict and optimize the in vivo performance of CLs.

Abstract
Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) is a rare disease that affects patients with asthma or cystic fibrosis. Its debilitating course has led to the search for new treatments, including antifungals and monoclonal antibodies. To evaluate the efficacy and safety of antifungal treatments in patients with ABPA and either asthma or cystic fibrosis, we performed a systematic review of the literature on the effects of antifungal agents in ABPA using three biomedical databases. Quality assessment was performed using the GRADE methodology and, where appropriate, studies with comparable outcomes were pooled for meta-analysis. Thirty-eight studies - four randomized controlled trials and 34 observational studies - met the eligibility criteria. The antifungal interventions described were itraconazole, voriconazole, posaconazole, ketoconazole, natamycin, nystatin and amphotericin B. An improvement in symptoms, frequency of exacerbations and lung function was reported in most of the studies and was more common with oral azoles. Antifungals also had a positive impact on biomarkers and radiological pulmonary infiltrates, but adverse effects were also common. The quality of the evidence supporting these results was low or very low due to a shortage of controlled studies, heterogeneity between studies and potential bias. Antifungal interventions in ABPA improved patient and disease outcomes in both asthma and cystic fibrosis. However, the recommendation for their use is weak and clinicians should therefore weigh up desirable and undesirable effects on a case-by-case basis. More studies with a better methodology are needed, especially in cystic fibrosis, to increase confidence in the effects of antifungal treatments in ABPA.

Abstract
Epilepsy affects at least 50 million people worldwide, and the available treatment is associated with various side effects. Approximately 20-30% of the patients develop seizures that persist despite careful monitored treatment with antiepileptic drugs. Thus, there is a clear need for the development of new antiepileptic drugs, and the venoms can be an excellent source of probes. In this context, while there are studies on venoms from snakes, scorpions, and spiders, little is known regarding venom from ants. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential pro- and anticonvulsant effects of the venom from the ant Dinoponera quadriceps (Kempf) in Swiss mice. After the injection of the crude venom (DqTx-5, 50, and 500 mg/mL) in the lateral ventricle of mice, we observed a reduction of exploration and grooming behaviors, as well as an increase in immobility duration. In addition, the crude venom induced procursive behavior and tonic-clonic seizures at the highest concentration. Conversely, the preadministration of the denatured venom (AbDq) at the concentration of 2 mg/mL protected the animals against tonic-clonic seizures (66.7%) and death (100%) induced by administration of bicuculline. Taken together, the findings demonstrate that D. quadriceps venom might be potential source of new pro- and anticonvulsants molecules.

Abstract
Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is an inflammatory immune-mediated disease with predominant eosinophilic inflammation characterized by the presence of esophageal dysfunction symptoms. Treatment delay can be associated with disease complications, like esophageal strictures, that can justify the use of invasive procedures which are not deprived of side effects. We present a case report of a 14 year old child with severe esophageal stricture secondary to EoE, that was treated with topical and systemic corticosteroid before any invasive procedure was considered. After 26 weeks of medical treatment, significant improvement of esophageal dysfunction occurred with histological remission and stricture resolution. In patients with severe esophageal strictures secondary to EoE, the need for esophageal dilation procedures should be considered only after anti-inflammatory treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Granulation tissue remodeling and myofibroblastic differentiation are critically important events during wound healing. Tobacco smoking has a detrimental effect in gingival tissue repair. However, studies evaluating the effects of cigarette smoke on these events are lacking. MATERIAL AND METHODS We used gingival fibroblasts cultured within free-floating and restrained collagen gels to simulate the initial and final steps of the granulation tissue phase during tissue repair. Collagen gel contraction was stimulated with serum or transforming growth factor-β1. Cigarette smoke condensate (CSC) was used to evaluate the effects of tobacco smoke on gel contraction. Protein levels of alpha-smooth muscle actin, β1 integrin, matrix metalloproteinase-3 and connective tissue growth factor were evaluated through Western blot. Prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) levels were determined through ELISA. Actin organization was evaluated through confocal microscopy. RESULTS CSC reduced collagen gel contraction induced by serum and transforming growth factor-β1 in restrained collagen gels. CSC also altered the development of actin stress fibers in fibroblasts cultured within restrained collagen gels. PGE(2) levels were strongly diminished by CSC in three-dimensional cell cultures. However, other proteins involved in granulation tissue remodeling and myofibroblastic differentiation such as alpha-smooth muscle actin, β1 integrin, matrix metalloproteinase-3 and connective tissue growth factor, were unmodified by CSC. CONCLUSIONS CSC may alter the capacity of gingival fibroblasts to remodel and contract a collagen matrix. Inhibition of PGE(2) production and alterations of actin stress fibers in these cells may impair proper tissue maturation during wound healing in smokers.
