Abstract
We have achieved conditions to obtain optical memory effects in semiconductor nanostructures. The system is based on strained InP quantum wires where the tuning of the heavy-light valence band splitting has allowed the existence of two independent optical channels with correlated and uncorrelated excitation and light-emission processes. The presence of an optical channel that preserves the excitation memory is unambiguously corroborated by photoluminescence measurements of free-standing quantum wires under different configurations of the incoming and outgoing light polarizations in various samples. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction indicate the presence of strain effects in the optical response. By using this effect and under certain growth conditions, we have shown that the optical recombination is mediated by relaxation processes with different natures: one a Markov and another with a non-Markovian signature. Resonance intersubband light-heavy hole transitions assisted by optical phonons provide the desired mechanism for the correlated non-Markovian carrier relaxation process. A multiband calculation for strained InP quantum wires was developed to account for the description of the character of the valence band states and gives quantitative support for light hole-heavy hole transitions assisted by optical phonons.

Abstract
Several phenotypic abnormalities of bone marrow (BM) hemopoietic precursors have been associated with disease progression in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). We analyzed the influence on overall survival of the expression of lineage and maturation-associated antigens of BM hemopoietic cells quantified in a previous study. In the univariate Cox regression the peripheral platelet count was a significant favourable factor for overall survival. Unfavorable prognostic factors were: WPSS, increase in BM CD34+ cells, increased mean fluorescence intensity (MFI) of CD13 on myelocytes, metamyelocytes and mature neutrophils as well as increased CD45 of myelocytes and mature neutrophils. In a model containing platelet count, WPSS and MFI of CD45 and CD13 on mature neutrophils, only hyperexpression of CD13 and degree of thrombocytopenia were independent risk factors. Therefore, phenotypic features that can also be obtained from PB might be useful for predicting survival in MDS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND SIMPLE II was a multi-centre, prospective registry study aimed at investigating the safety and efficacy of the Infinnium (Sahajanand Medical Technologies Pvt. Ltd, India) paclitaxel-eluting stent for the treatment of single de novo lesions in the native coronary arteries. METHODS One hundred and three patients with symptomatic coronary artery disease were treated for single de novo native coronary artery lesions using the Infinnium stent (paclitaxel concentration 1.4 mcg/mm2 released over 48 days) in a multi-centre, prospective study performed on 3 continents (Asia, Europe and South America). The primary safety endpoint was major adverse cardiac events at 30 days (MACE 30d) and efficacy was assessed by in-stent binary restenosis as measured by quantitative coronary angiography (QCA) at six-month follow-up. A clinical follow-up was scheduled at nine months. RESULTS The mean patient age was 58.5 years; 70.9% were males; 43.7% had unstable angina and 38.8% previous myocardial infarction. Risk factors included hypertension in 62.1%, hypercholesterolemia in 52.4%, current smoking in 32.0% and diabetes in 28.2%. Stent implantation was successful in all patients, with more than one stent being implanted in 9 patients (8.7%). Hierarchical MACE 30d was 2.9%. At nine months, 101 patients had clinical follow-up (1 patient had died and 1 refused). There was one death (1.0%), one Q-wave myocardial infarction (Q MI) (1.0%), three non-Q MIs (2.9%), one clinically-driven target lesion Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) (1.0%), and one clinically-driven target lesion repeat percutaneous coronary intervention (re-PCI) (1.0%). The overall event-free rate at nine months was 93.2%. QCA revealed in-stent and in-segment late loss of 0.38+/-0.49 mm and 0.18+/-0.46 mm, resulting in binary restenosis rates of 7.3% and 8.3%, respectively. There was one case of late stent thrombosis in the patient experiencing the Q MI and subsequent re-PCI. CONCLUSIONS The Infinnium paclitaxel-eluting stent appears to be safe and efficacious for the treatment of single de novo lesions in coronary arteries in a patient population with symptomatic coronary artery disease (CAD).

Abstract
The structural and optical properties of high-quality crystalline strained InP nanowires are reported in this article. The nanowires were produced by the vapor-liquid-solid growth method in a chemical-beam epitaxy reactor, using 20 nm gold nanoparticles as catalysts. Polarization-resolved photoluminescence experiments were carried out to study the optical properties of the InP nanowires. These experiments revealed a large blue shift of 74 meV of the first electron-to-heavy hole optical transition in the nanowires, which cannot be solely explained by quantum size effects. The blue shift is mainly attributed to the presence of biaxial compressive strain in the inward radial direction of the InP nanowires. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy Electron and selected area electron diffraction experiments show that the nanowires have high crystal quality and grow along a [001] axes. These experiments also confirmed the presence of 1.8% compressive radial strain and 2% tensile longitudinal strain in the nanowires. A simple theoretical model including both quantum confinement and strain effects consistently describes the actual energy position of the InP nanowires optical emission.

Abstract
This study aimed to determine whether candiduria is associated with the occurrence of nosocomial candidaemia. In the case-control part of the study, 115 cases (nosocomial candidaemia) and 115 controls (nosocomial bacteraemia) were similar in age, severity of condition and time of hospitalisation. There was a significant association of candidaemia with candiduria (OR 9.79; 95% CI 2.14-44.76). In the microbiology part of the study, 23 pairs of Candida-positive urine and blood cultures were obtained from 23 patients. In ten (43%) cases, the urine and blood culture isolates belonged to different species, and molecular typing showed a difference in two of the 13 cases yielding the same species from both specimens. Overall, there was a significant association between candiduria and candidaemia, but the Candida isolates from urine and blood were different for 52% of the patients. Thus, the data indicated that the urinary tract was probably not a source for the candidaemia.
