Abstract
We report on measurements of the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth of a high-quality sample of BaPtSi3 (Tc = 2.25 K). We observe a temperature-independent behaviour below T ≃ 0.2 Tc, which is firm evidence for the presence of an isotropic superconducting gap in this material. In the whole temperature range the superfluid density is described well by a strong-coupling Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) model with an isotropic gap Δ0 ≈ 2kBTc. Our results provide further support for conventional BCS superconductivity in the nonmagnetic members of the noncentrosymmetric family of superconductors that crystallize with the BaNiSn3-type tetragonal structure.

Abstract
A study was carried out to investigate, whether short-term supplementation of dietary yeast nucleotides affects total and diurnal variation of enzyme activities in the small intestine of weaned piglets. Twelve barrows, weaned at 18 d of age (5 kg initial BW), were fitted with a simple T-cannula at the distal ileum. Twice daily (0730 and 1930 h), 6 piglets each received a cereal-soybean (Glycine max) meal-based diet with or without supplementation of 1 g/kg of a yeast nucleotide product in 2 consecutive periods. In each period, digesta samples were collected 6 times at given intervals during 24 h digesta collection. Dietary supplementation with yeast nucleotides did not affect (P > 0.05) total enzyme activities for α-amylase, leucine aminopeptidase (LAP), maltase, and lactase in ileal digesta. Therefore, data of both treatments were pooled to determine diurnal variations in enzyme activities. For α-amylase, a diurnal variation in enzyme activity could be observed (P < 0.05). Variations in diurnal activities of LAP, maltase, and lactase were not observed (P > 0.05). In conclusion, yeast nucleotides do not affect total small intestinal enzyme activities. Independent of diet composition, α-amylase activities may vary over time, with peak flow at 6 h postprandially.

Abstract
The spin-dependent reflectivity of slow electrons from ultrathin Fe films on W(110) has been measured with spin polarized low energy electron microscopy. From the amplitude of the quantum size oscillations observed in the reflectivity curves the spin-dependent inelastic mean free path (IMFP) of electrons in Fe has been determined in the energy range from 5 to 16 eV above the vacuum level. The resulting IMFP values for the spin-up electrons are clearly larger than those for the spin-down electrons and the difference between the two values decreases with increasing electron energy in agreement with theoretical predictions.

Abstract
Low energy electron microscopy (LEEM) imaging of strained MnAs layers epitaxially grown on GaAs(001) reveals striped contrast features that become more pronounced and vary systematically in width with increasing defocus, but that are completely absent in focus. Weaker subsidiary fringe-like features are observed along the stripe lengths, while asymmetric contrast reversal occurs between under-focus and over-focus conditions. A Fourier optics calculation is performed that demonstrates that these unusual observations can be attributed to a phase contrast mechanism between the hexagonal α phase and orthorhombic β phase regions of the MnAs film, which self-organize into a periodic stripe array with ridge-groove morphology. The unequal widths of the α and β phase regions are determined accurately from the through focus series, while the height variation in this system can also be determined in principle from the energy dependence of contrast.

Abstract
The crystal structure of Ti(8)(Ti(x)Mn(1-x))(6)Mn(39), x = 0.187, was obtained from x-ray single-crystal diffraction data, confirming it to have rhombohedral symmetry (space group [Formula: see text]; a(hex) = 1.100 70(2) nm, c(hex) = 1.944 11(4) nm; R(F) = 0.0293) and isotypism with the prototype Mo(0.38)Cr(0.16)Co(0.46) (the so-called R-phase). On the basis of electron probe micro-analyser results and structure determination, the homogeneity region of the phase TiMn(~4) was determined for temperatures in the range 800 °C < T < 1200 °C and is in between 16.0 at.% Ti and 20 at.% Ti. Various physical properties, determined in the temperature range from ~2 K to room temperature, characterize the compound with composition TiMn(4.26) as a metallic spin fluctuation system, evidenced from a T(3)lnT dependence of the heat capacity in combination with large values of the electronic Sommerfeld constant of the order of 140 mJ mol(-1) K(-2). The occurrence of a small anomaly in the heat capacity and magnetization data around 10 K is attributed to a scenario involving spin freezing phenomena, since a fraction of the order of 10% of all Mn-Mn distances within the unit cell are above a critical distance, where Mn atoms carry a spontaneous magnetic moment.

Abstract
Void filling in (I) Bi(x)-added Co(4)Sb(12) or (II) Sb/Bi substitution of Co(4)Sb(12-x)Bi(x) has been investigated for structural and thermoelectric properties evaluation. X-ray powder data Rietveld refinements combined with electron probe microanalyses showed a polycrystalline and practically Bi-free CoSb(3) skutterudite phase as the major constituent as well as a secondary Bi phase in the grain boundaries. For series I alloys, the electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity were measured as a function of temperature in the range from 450 to 750 K. The electrical conductivity of all the samples increased with increasing temperature, showing a semiconducting nature with smaller values of the Seebeck coefficient for higher Bi fractions. Conduction over the entire temperature range was found to arise from a single p-type carrier. Thermal conductivity showed a reduction with Bi added in all the samples, except for Bi(0.75)Co(4)Sb(12), and the lowest lattice thermal conductivity was found for a Bi-added fraction of 0.5. The maximum zT value of 0.53 at 632 K is higher than that of Co(4)Sb(12).

Abstract
Phase relations and solidification behavior in the Ge-rich part of the phase diagram have been determined in two isothermal sections at 700 and 750 °C and in a liquidus projection. A reaction scheme has been derived in the form of a Schulz-Scheil diagram. Phase equilibria are characterized by three ternary compounds: τ(1)-BaRhGe(3) (BaNiSn(3)-type) and two novel phases, τ(2)-Ba(3)Rh(4)Ge(16) and τ(3)-Ba(5)Rh(15)Ge(36-x), both forming in peritectic reactions. The crystal structures of τ(2) and τ(3) have been elucidated from single-crystal X-ray intensity data and were found to crystallize in unique structure types: Ba(3)Rh(4)Ge(16) is tetragonal (I4/mmm, a = 0.65643(2) nm, c = 2.20367(8) nm, and R(F) = 0.0273), whereas atoms in Ba(5)Rh(15)Ge(36-x) (x = 0.25) arrange in a large orthorhombic unit cell (Fddd, a = 0.84570(2) nm, b = 1.4725(2) nm, c = 6.644(3) nm, and R(F) = 0.034). The body-centered-cubic superstructure of binary Ba(8)Ge(43)□(3) was observed to extend at 800 °C to Ba(8)Rh(0.6)Ge(43)□(2.4), while the clathrate type I phase, κ(I)-Ba(8)Rh(x)Ge(46-x-y)□(y), reveals a maximum solubility of x = 1.2 Rh atoms in the structure at a vacancy level of y = 2.0. The cubic lattice parameter increases with increasing Rh content. Clathrate I decomposes eutectoidally at 740 °C: κ(I) ⇔ (Ge) + κ(IX) + τ(2). A very small solubility range is observed at 750 °C for the clathrate IX, κ(IX)-Ba(6)Rh(x)Ge(25-x) (x ∼ 0.16). Density functional theory calculations have been performed to derive the enthalpies of formation and densities of states for various compositions Ba(8)Rh(x)Ge(46-x) (x = 0-6). The physical properties have been investigated for the phases κ(I), τ(1), τ(2), and τ(3), documenting a change from thermoelectric (κ(I)) to superconducting behavior (τ(2)). The electrical resistivity of κ(I)-Ba(8)Rh(1.2)Ge(42.8)□(2.0) increases almost linearly with the temperature from room temperature to 730 K, and the Seebeck coefficient is negative throughout the same temperature range. τ(1)-BaRhGe(3) has a typical metallic electrical resistivity. A superconducting transition at T(C) = 6.5 K was observed for τ(2)-Ba(3)Rh(4)Ge(16), whereas τ(3)-Ba(5)Rh(15)Ge(35.75) showed metallic-like behavior down to 4 K.

Abstract
In piglets, the development and composition of intestinal microbiota is influenced by dietary factors. A considerable reduction in feed intake during the transition from liquid to solid feed is often accompanied by postweaning diarrhea. Therefore, it is hypothesized that variations in feeding level during weaning may affect intestinal microbial composition. Forty-eight piglets fitted with simple ileal T-cannulas were used to examine the effects of a high (60 g/kg BW) and a low (30 g/kg BW) feeding level on the composition of the ileal and fecal microbiota. The assay diets contained graded inclusion levels of soybean (Glycine max) meal or casein. Bacterial cell numbers of total eubacteria, Lactobacillus spp., and the mainly proteolytic Clostridium leptum, Clostridium coccoides, Enterobacteriaceae, and Bacteroides-Prevotella-Porphyromonas group (Bacteroides group) of feces and ileal digesta were determined by use of real-time PCR. There were no interactions between feeding level and protein source except for the Bacteroides group in ileal digesta. Ileal cell numbers of lactobacilli were increased (P < 0.001) at the higher feeding level. In contrast, ileal cell numbers of Clostridium coccoides were lower (P < 0.001) at the higher feeding level. There were no differences of bacterial cell numbers in feces. Results indicate that feeding level affects microbial composition in the small intestine. Also, sufficient feed intake during weaning encourages proliferation of beneficial bacteria, thereby contributing to improved gut health.

Abstract
Weaning is often stressful for piglets and accompanied by morphological, histological, microbial, and immunological changes along the digestive tract. Dietary nucleotides are bioactive compounds which have the potential to diminish weaning-associated challenges. The experiment was carried out with 5 litters each of 7 pigs (mixed sex), weaned at 20 d of age. One baseline pig per litter was slaughtered at d 0. The remaining 30 pigs were housed individually and randomly allocated to 2 dietary treatments: the control diet or the control diet supplemented with a mixture of nucleotides. Measurements of growth performance traits included ADFI, ADG, G:F, and BW. At d 17, fresh fecal samples were taken to determine bacterial numbers. On d 19 and 20, pigs were slaughtered and blood samples were analyzed for plasma immunoglobulins and intestinal samples were assessed for morphological traits. Digesta from the jejunum and cecum were collected for analysis of the microbiome. The ADFI was greater in the nucleotide treatment compared with the control treatment (P < 0.05), but ADG, G:F, and BW did not differ between treatments. Plasma IgA concentrations increased with age and were greater in the nucleotide (P < 0.05) compared with the control group. There were no treatment differences in plasma IgG and IgM, gut morphology, or intestinal and fecal bacterial counts. Supplemental nucleotides may increase ADFI but without having any impact on growth performance of the pigs. Greater plasma IgA concentrations indicate that adding nucleotides in the weaning diet supported humoral immunity. However, there was no effect of dietary nucleotide supplementation on the composition of the bacterial community in parts of the small and large intestine. Further research is warranted before the use of nucleotide as a feed additive in pig diet can be recommended.

Abstract
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women worldwide. High breast cancer incidence and mortality rates, especially in obese patients, emphasize the need for a better biological understanding of this disease. Previous studies provide substantial evidence for a vital role of the local extracellular environment in multiple steps of tumor progression, including proliferation and invasion. Current evidence supports the role of adipocytes as an endocrine organ, which produces steroid hormones, pro-inflammatory cytokines and adipokines, such as leptin. To further define the role of the mammary microenvironment on tumorigenesis, we have developed an adipose-tumor epithelial cell co-culture system designed to reproduce the in vivo mammary environment. We validate this model through use of coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) microscopy, a label-free vibrational imaging technique. CARS analysis demonstrates the sustained viability of the adipocytes, and that mammary cancer cell morphology parallels that of tumors in vivo. Also, characterized was the influence of mammary adipose tissue on tumor cell growth and migration. Adipose tissue co-cultured with mammary tumor epithelial cells, in the absence of any serum or supplemental growth factors, resulted in substantial increases in growth and migration of tumor cells. In conclusion, this novel co-culture system provides an ideal model to study epithelial-stromal interactions in the mammary gland. Understanding the relationship between adipose tissue, the most abundant and least studied component of the breast stroma and tumor epithelial cells is critical to clarifying the influence of obesity on the development, progression and prognosis of breast cancer.

Abstract
The ETV6/RUNX1 (E/R) gene fusion is generated by the t(12;21) and found in approximately 25% of childhood B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia. In contrast to the overwhelming evidence that E/R is critical for the initiation of leukemia, its relevance for the maintenance of overt disease is less clear. To investigate this issue, we suppressed the endogenous E/R fusion protein with lentivirally transduced short hairpin RNA in the leukemia cell lines REH and AT-2, and found a distinct reduction of proliferation and cell survival. In line with the observed concurrent inactivation of the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/AKT/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway, pharmacological inhibition diminished the phosphorylation of AKT and ribosomal protein S6, and significantly increased the apoptosis rate in E/R-positive leukemias. Moreover, PI3K/mTOR inhibitors sensitized glucocorticoid-resistant REH cells to prednisolone, an observation of potential relevance for improving treatment of drug-resistant relapses. Of note, knockdown of the E/R fusion gene also severely impaired the repopulation capacity of REH cells in non-obese deficient/severe combined immunodeficient mice. Collectively, these data demonstrate that the E/R fusion protein activates the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway and is indispensible for disease maintenance. Importantly, these results provide a first rationale and justification for targeting the fusion gene and the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway therapeutically.

Abstract
Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) is employed to study damped spin-wave excitations in the noncentrosymmetric heavy-fermion superconductor CePt3Si along the antiferromagnetic Brillouin zone boundary in the low-temperature magnetically ordered state. Measurements along the (1/2 1/2 L) and (H H 1/2 - H) reciprocal-space directions reveal deviations in the spin-wave dispersion from the previously reported model. The broad asymmetric shape of the peaks in energy signifies strong spin-wave damping by interactions with the particle-hole continuum. Their energy width exhibits no evident anomalies as a function of momentum along the (1/2 1/2 L) direction which could be attributed to Fermi surface nesting effects, implying the absence of pronounced commensurate nesting vectors at the magnetic zone boundary. In agreement with a previous study, we find no signatures of the superconducting transition in the magnetic excitation spectrum, such as a magnetic resonant mode or a superconducting spin gap, either at the magnetic ordering wavevector (0 0 1/2) or at the zone boundary. However, the low superconducting transition temperature in this material still leaves the possibility of such features being weak and therefore hidden below the incoherent background at energies ≲ 0.1 meV, precluding their detection by INS.

Abstract
In previous studies, dietary nucleotides have been shown to improve performance in single-stomached animals by promoting the renewal of small intestine epithelial cells and by influencing the activity and composition of the microbial community in the digestive tract. The present experiment was carried out with 12 barrows weaned at the age of 18 days and fitted with a simple T-cannula at the distal ileum. To determine short-term effects of dietary yeast nucleotides, the piglets received a grain-soybean meal-based basal diet with or without supplementation of 1 g/kg of a dried yeast product containing free nucleotides. Dietary supplementation with yeast did not affect bacterial numbers in the ileum as well as ileal concentrations of individual short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), total SCFA and total lactic acid (p > 0.05). Moreover, there was no effect of supplemental yeast nucleotides on ileal α-amylase, leucine amino peptidase, maltase and lactase activities (p > 0.05), as well as on ileal dry matter, crude protein and crude fibre digestibilities (p > 0.05). In conclusion, short-term supplementation with dietary yeast nucleotides did not affect microbial metabolite concentrations, bacterial numbers and enzyme activities in the ileal digesta as well as ileal nutrient digestibilities of newly weaned pigs.

Abstract
High temperature thermoelectric (TE) properties for triple-filled skutterudites (Sr(x)Ba(x)Yb₁₋₂x)(y)Co₄Sb₁₂ were investigated for alloy compositions in two sections of the system: (a) for x = 0.25 with a filling fraction y ranging from 0.1 to 0.25 and (b) for 0 < x < 0.5 and y = 0.11 + 0.259x. The representation of the figure of merit, ZT, as a function of skutterudite composition, defined the compositional range (0.25 < x < 0.4; 0.18 < y < 0.24) with ZT over 1.4 at 800 K. It was shown that an enhanced TE performance for these triple-filled skutterudites is caused by low electrical resistivities and low lattice thermal conductivities, as well as by a fine tuning of the chemical composition. Low temperature measurements for the samples with the highest ZT values showed that even a small change of the filler ratios changes the contribution of scattering effects, the carrier concentration and the mobility.

Abstract
A set of 90 doubled haploid (DH) lines derived from F(1) plants that originated from a cross between × Triticosecale Wittm. 'Saka3006' and ×Triticosecale Wittm. 'Modus', via wide crossing with maize, were used to create a genetic linkage map of triticale. The map has 21 linkage groups assigned to the A, B, and R genomes including 155 simple sequence repeat (SSR), 1385 diversity array technology (DArT), and 28 amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers covering 2397 cM with a mean distance between two markers of 4.1 cM. Comparative analysis with wheat consensus maps revealed that triticale chromosomes of the A and B genomes were represented by 15 chromosomes, including combinations of 2AS.2AL#, 2AL#2BL, 6AS.6AL#, and 2BS.6AL# instead of 2A, 2B, and 6A. In respect to published maps of rye, substantial rearrangements were found also for chromosomes 1R, 2R, and 3R of the rye genome. Chromosomes 1R and 2R were truncated and the latter was linked with 3R. A nonhomogeneous distribution of markers across the triticale genome was observed with evident bias (48%) towards the rye genome. This genetic map may serve as a reference linkage map of triticale for efficient studies of structural rearrangements, gene mapping, and marker-assisted selection.
