Abstract
Haemonchus contortus (H. contortus) is a haematophagous parasite which causes important economic losses in small ruminants. On the island of Gran Canaria, two sheep breeds coexist which differ in their susceptibility to the infection with H. contortus; the resistant Canaria Hair Breed (CHB) sheep and the susceptible Canaria Sheep (CS) breed. The major target of resistance mechanisms in CHB sheep are directed to the adult parasite stage, reducing the worm burden, and decreased length and fecundity of surviving worms. Mucosal IgA (mIgA) has been shown to be an important regulator of immunity in Haemonchus and Teladorsagia infections; through correlations with larval stages where such mechanisms as antibody-dependent cell cytotoxicity and enzyme inhibition may mediate resistance. Here for the first time, we demonstrate a significant negative correlation between mIgA and adult worm length and fecundity only in the resistant CHB sheep. In contrast, and as reported in other sheep breeds, mIgA was only negatively correlated against the larval stage in the more susceptible CS breed. This study suggests mIgA may play a role in resistance to both larval and adult stages.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The goal of this study was to characterize for the first time the electrocardiogram (ECG) of the southern sea lion (SSL) Otaria flavescens. ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirteen wild SSL females were captured at Isla de Lobos (Uruguay) and anaesthetized with isoflurane. Electrocardiographic recording was performed on anaesthetized animals at ventral recumbence following standardized procedures. RESULTS The ECG recordings showed normal sinus rhythm. Amplitude and duration of P and T waves, QRS complex, PR interval, QT interval and ST segment (STS) were determined for all animals in all leads. QT corrected was determined in lead II. P wave polarity was consistent among animals (positive in LI, LII, LIII and AVF leads and negative in AVL and AVR leads for all animals), but T wave polarity did not present any constant pattern among animals, being either positive, negative or biphasic in different leads and different animals. The PR interval (0.15 ± 0.2 s) was similar to the allometric prediction for most of mammalian species including humans. The STS were normal in 10 of the SSL but showed STS depression in three of the animals. Almost all animals had a negative electrical axis (-30° to -120°), with one exception that showed a positive electrical axis (120°). Mean eupnoeic heart rate was 104.61 ± 10.06 (range = 88-120) beats per minute. CONCLUSIONS This study was the first ECG description for this species, and provides valuable information for cardiac monitoring during anaesthesia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the patterns of cerebral cortical distribution of (11)C-PIB in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). MATERIAL AND METHODS The study included 69 patients (37 male, age range 42-79 years) with MCI, sub-classified as 53 with amnestic-MCI (A-MCI), and 16 with non-amnestic-MCI (NA-MCI). Patients underwent (11)C-PIB PET/CT scan 60min after intravenous injection of the radiotracer. A visual analysis of the images was performed by 2 experienced physicians. (11)C-PIB-positive studies were considered when gray matter uptake was equal to or greater than white matter. According to the regions involved, (11)C-PIB-positive studies were classified into A-pattern (predominant retention in frontal, anterior cingulate, lateral temporal, and basal ganglia) and B-pattern (generalized retention). RESULTS Thirty-nine of the 69 (56%) patients with MCI showed (11)C-PIB retention. Of the 53 A-MCI patients, 36 (68%) showed (11)C-PIB retention. Eleven out of 36 (30%) positive scans in A-MCI patients showed A-pattern, and 25 out of 36 (70%) patients had a B-pattern. Positive (11)C-PIB was observed in 3 out of 16 (19%) patients with NA-MCI. Regional distribution in these 3 patients showed A-pattern in 1, and B-pattern in 2 patients. CONCLUSION Cortical retention of (11)C-PIB was more frequent in A-MCI than in NA-MCI patients, and also B-pattern than A-pattern in the (11)C-PIB positive group. The recognition of (11)C-PIB distribution patterns allows MCI patients to be classified, and the A-pattern may offer a therapeutic window for potential future treatments.

Abstract
Eczema is a typical multifactorial disease which is based on an individual hereditary predisposition that becomes manifested by environmental and lifestyle factors. The heritability of eczema is estimated to be 70-80 %. The possibilities for deciphering inherited risk factors have significantly increased during recent years. As a result various genetic risk factors have been successfully identified and first insights into epigenetic changes have been obtained. With the growing knowledge about the constitutionally determined variability new disease models have been developed, which imply temporal and developmental interactions between genetic and environmental factors. Strategies for individualized prediction, prevention and therapy are conceivable.

Abstract
Because of Panama's stricter sanitary status, a specialised protocol was developed with the Department of Agriculture in the Dominican Republic to legalize the exchange of biological materials (oocytes/embryos). This protocol allows the team of specialised technicians, currently working in Born® Animal Biotechnology's Panamanian facility, to operate using the same in vitro bovine embryo production system (IVP, In vitro Brasil®) to service Dominican producers. Because the donors are not located at a specific centre with controlled sanitary management, a special protocol was developed in which blood tests were done to certify that the entirety of the herd at each client's farm was free of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, DBVD, leptospirosis, leucosis, brucellosis, and tuberculosis. As timing during IVP is an essential variable that can have detrimental effects on the final results, precautions were taken to ensure that the oocytes arrived at the Panamanian laboratory facility within 24 h of aspiration. A portable incubator was used to transport oocytes and embryos during the import and export portions of the procedure. A comparison of pregnancy rates based on oocyte source and recipient transfers from September 2012 until May 2013 was analysed with ?2 (Table 1). The number of embryos produced in Panama was significantly higher than in the Dominican Republic, which was likely due to the larger number of donors and oocytes from the Panama herd. However, pregnancy rate was higher in the Dominican Republic likely because of the health status of the Dominican recipients, which were free of the diseases mentioned above. Recipients were the same type and breed and under similar management conditions in both countries. The disease status aspect will be examined with greater numbers of animals in the future. The data suggest that the present IVP and recipient management protocols could serve as a model for other Central American and Caribbean countries under similar management systems.

Abstract
Omalizumab, a monoclonal antibody targeting IgE, is an established therapy for severe allergic asthma and has shown efficacy in chronic spontaneous urticaria. Small-scale studies indicated some beneficial effect also in atopic dermatitis (AD). To evaluate the efficacy of omalizumab in AD and to identify markers associated with treatment response, we conducted a prospective 28-week open-label trial on 20 adults with moderate-to-severe AD. Our results confirm previous observations of a positive response in a subgroup of patients and suggest that responders are characterized by the absence of filaggrin mutations and altered lipid metabolite profiles with high levels of various glycerophospholipids.

Abstract
Adequate protein levels are necessary to maintain strong honey bee [Apis mellifera (L.)] colonies. The aim of this study was to quantify how pollens with different crude protein contents influence protein stores within individual honey bees. Caged bees were fed one of three diets, consisting of high-protein-content pollen, low-protein-content pollen, or protein-free diet as control; measurements were made based on protein content in hemolymph and fat body, fat body weight, and body weight. Vitellogenin in hemolymph was also measured. Bees fed with high crude protein diet had significantly higher levels of protein in hemolymph and fat bodies. Caged bees did not increase pollen consumption to compensate for the lower protein in the diet, and ingesting approximately 4 mg of protein per bee could achieve levels of 20 microg/microl protein in hemolymph. Worker bees fed with low crude protein diet took more time in reaching similar protein content of the bees that were fed with high crude protein diet. The data showed that fat bodies and body weight were not efficient methods of measuring the protein status of bees. The determination of total protein or vitellogenin concentration in the hemolymph from 13-d-old bees and protein concentration of fat bodies from 9-d-old bees could be good indicators of nutritional status of honey bees.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to develop a nested polymerase chain reaction (nested PCR) for the rapid detection of transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) of pigs. The primers were designed on the basis of highly conserved regions of several TGEV sequences included in the analysis. External primers were used to amplify a fragment of the expected size (441 bp) in all the samples evaluated using reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), but with very low intensity. In the second amplification (nested PCR), internal primers were used to amplify a fragment of the expected size (168 bp), with good concentration. The performance of the test based on virus isolates in tissue culture and in clinical samples was judged good for the virological diagnosis of transmissible gastroenteritis of pigs.

Abstract
Abstract. In this paper we propose a finite element method approach for modelling the air quality in a local scale over complex terrain. The area of interest is up to tens of kilometres and it includes pollutant sources. The proposed methodology involves the generation of an adaptive tetrahedral mesh, the computation of an ambient wind field, the inclusion of the plume rise effect in the wind field, and the simulation of transport and reaction of pollutants. We apply our methodology to simulate a fictitious pollution episode in La Palma island (Canary Island, Spain).

Abstract
Among all inflammatory cells involved in COPD, those with a cytolytic or elastolytic activity are thought to play a key role in the pathogenesis of the disease. However, there is no data about the infiltration of cells expressing the CD57 marker in small airways and parenchyma of COPD patients. In this study, surgical specimens from 43 subjects undergoing lung resection due to lung cancer (9 non-smokers, 18 smokers without COPD and 16 smokers with moderate COPD) and 16 patients undergoing double lung transplantation for very severe COPD were examined. CD57+ cells, neutrophils, macrophages and mast cells infiltrating bronchioles (epithelium, smooth muscle and connective tissue) and parenchymal interstitium were localized and quantified by immunohistochemical analysis. Compared to the other groups, the small airways of very severe COPD patients showed a significantly higher density of CD57+ cells, mainly infiltrated in the connective tissue (p=0.001), and a significantly higher density of neutrophils located characteristically in the epithelium (p=0.037). Also, the density of neutrophils was significantly higher in parenchyma of very severe COPD patients compared with the rest of the groups (p=0.001). Finally, there were significant correlations between the bronchiolar density of CD57+ cells and the FEV1 values (R=-0.43, p=0.022), as well as between the parenchymal density of neutrophils and macroscopic emphysema degree (R=0.43, p=0.048) in COPD groups. These results show that CD57+ cells may be involved in COPD pathogenesis, especially in the most severe stages of the disease.

Abstract
Observational studies have found that women tend to have lower adherence to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) than men do, though no meta-analysis has yet investigated this trend. The aims of the current meta-analysis are to determine if and to what degree the percentage of men versus women maintaining ≥90% adherence to prescribed HAART differs, and if the external variables moderating adherence differs by gender. Eight electronic databases were searched to locate all relevant studies available by May 2011. Fifty-six observational studies were eligible for inclusion in the meta-analysis. A random effect model was assumed for the global percentage estimation and to explain the heterogeneity. Across these studies, the difference between men and women in the proportion of individuals with ≥90% adherence to HAART was marginally significant (p<0.1; 67% and 62%, respectively). A greater proportion of men maintaining ≥90% adherence to HAART was more likely in studies with higher proportions of men who have sex with men (MSM), lower proportions of male alcohol users or lower proportions of men in a methadone program. In women, higher rates of adherence were found in studies conducted in Africa, Asia, and South America, when the sample included more widows or when the sample had a lower basal CD4 count. That both the percentage of adherent individuals and the variables associated with such adherence differ between men and women are suggestive of the need for improving gender-tailored interventions for adherence to HAART.

Abstract
The demographic characteristics of the population of Madrid, with a steady increase in immigrants, from 4.7% in 1998 to 17.4% in 2007, provide an opportunity to study in depth the transmission of TB. Our aim was to compare two 3-year longitudinal molecular studies of TB to define transmission patterns and predictors of clustering. Two prospective population-based molecular and epidemiological studies (2002-2004 and 2005-2007) of TB patients were conducted in nine urban districts in Madrid using the same methodology. During the period 2002-2007, 2248 cases of TB were reported, and the incidence decreased from 23.5 per 100,000 in 2002 to 20.8 in 2007 (p <0.001). A total of 1269 isolates were molecularly characterized and included in the study. The comparison between the two periods showed that the percentage of foreign-born patients among TB cases increased from 36.2% to 45.7% (p <0.001). Furthermore, the percentage of clustered cases decreased (36.6% vs. 30.6%; p 0.028), and this decline was associated with a decrease of clustered cases among men and people under 35 years. We also observed a decrease in cases belonging to clusters containing ≥ 6 people (14.2% vs. 8.2%; p <0.001), and in cases belonging to mixed clusters containing Spanish-born and foreign-born patients (18.5% vs. 11.1%, p <0.001). Our molecular epidemiology study provides clues to interpret the decrease in the incidence of TB in a context of steady increase of immigration. In our region, the decrease in the incidence of TB can be explained predominantly as a result of a decline in recent transmission.

Abstract
Simultaneous recordings of cord dorsum potentials along the lumbo-sacral spinal cord of the anaesthetized cat revealed the occurrence of spontaneous synchronous negative (n) and negative-positive (np) cord dorsum potentials (CDPs). The npCDPs, unlike the nCDPs, appeared preferentially associated with spontaneous negative dorsal root potentials (DRPs) resulting from primary afferent depolarization. Spontaneous npCDPs recorded in preparations with intact neuroaxis or after spinalization often showed a higher correlation than the nCDPs recorded from the same pair of segments. The acute section of the sural and superficial peroneal nerves further increased the correlation between paired sets of npCDPs and reduced the correlation between the nCDPs recorded from the same pair of segments. It is concluded that the spontaneous nCDPs and npCDPs are produced by the activation of interconnected sets of dorsal horn neurones located in Rexed's laminae III–IV and bilaterally distributed along the lumbo-sacral spinal cord. Under conditions of low synchronization in the activity of this network of neurones there would be a preferential activation of the intermediate nucleus interneurones mediating Ib non-reciprocal postsynaptic inhibition. Increased synchronization in the spontaneous activity of this ensemble of dorsal horn neurones would recruit the interneurones mediating primary afferent depolarization and presynaptic inhibition and, at the same time, reduce the activation of pathways mediating Ib postsynaptic inhibition. Central control of the synchronization in the spontaneous activity of dorsal horn neurones and its modulation by cutaneous inputs is envisaged as an effective mechanism for the selection of alternative inhibitory pathways during the execution of specific motor or sensory tasks.
