Abstract
In a microcalorimetric neutrino mass experiment using the radioactive decay of (163)Ho, the radioactive material must be fully embedded in the microcalorimeter absorber. One option that is being investigated is to implant the radioactive isotope into a gold absorber, as gold is successfully used in other applications. However, knowing the thermal properties at the working temperature of microcalorimeters is critical for choosing the absorber material and for optimizing the detector performance. In particular, it is paramount to understand if implanting the radioactive material in gold changes its heat capacity. We used a bolometric technique to measure the heat capacity of gold films, implanted with various concentrations of holmium and erbium (a byproduct of the (163)Ho fabrication), in the temperature range 70 mK-300 mK. Our results show that the specific heat capacity of the gold films is not affected by the implant, making this a viable option for a future microcalorimeter holmium experiment.

Abstract
In this work, the influence of air pressure during the annealing of Ge quantum dot (QD) lattices embedded in an amorphous Al(2)O(3) matrix on the structural, morphological and compositional properties of the film is studied. The formation of a regularly ordered void lattice after performing a thermal annealing process is explored. Our results show that both the Ge desorption from the film and the regular ordering of the QDs are very sensitive to the annealing parameters. The conditions for the formation of a void lattice, a crystalline Ge QD lattice and a disordered QD lattice are presented. The observed effects are explained in terms of oxygen interaction with the Ge present in the film.

Abstract
The results of high-pressure low-temperature optical measurements in a diamond-anvil cell of bulk gallium nitride crystals implanted with ytterbium are reported in combination with crystal field calculations of the Yb(3+) energy levels. Crystal field analysis of splitting of the (2)F(7/2) and (2)F(5/2) states has been performed, with the aim of assigning all features of the experimental luminescence spectra. A thorough analysis of the pressure behavior of the Yb(3+) luminescence lines in GaN allowed the determination of the ambient-pressure positions and pressure dependence of the Yb(3+) energy levels in the trigonal crystal field as well as the pressure-induced changes of the spin-orbit coupling coefficient.

Abstract
Studies of the variation in recombination rate across the genome provide a better understanding of evolutionary genomics and are also an important step towards mapping and dissecting complex traits in domestic animals. With the recent completion of the porcine genome sequence and the availability of a high-density porcine single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array, it is now possible to construct a high-density porcine linkage map and estimate recombination rate across the genome. A total of 416 animals were genotyped with the Porcine SNP60BeadChip, and high-density chromosome linkage maps were constructed using CRI-MAP, assuming the physical order of the Sscrofa10 assembly. The total linkage map length was 2018.79 cM, using 658 meioses and 14,503 SNPs. The estimated average recombination rate across the porcine autosomes was 0.86 cM/Mb. However, a large variation in recombination rate was observed among chromosomes. The estimated average recombination rates (cM/Mb) per chromosome ranged from 0.48 in SSC1 to 1.48 in SSC10, displaying a significant negative correlation with the chromosome sizes. In addition, the analysis of the variation in the recombination rates taking 1-Mb sliding windows has allowed us to demonstrate the variation in recombination rates within chromosomes. In general, a larger recombination rate was observed in the extremes than in the centre of the chromosome. Finally, the ratio between female and male recombination rates was also inferred, obtaining a value of 1.38, with the heterogametic sex having the least recombination.

Abstract
Raman spectroscopy results obtained under visible (non-resonant) and UV (resonant) excitation for nanocrystalline ZnO, ZnO:Mn and ZnO:Mn:Al thin films grown by radio frequency magnetron sputtering are presented and compared. The origin of the multiple longitudinal optical (LO) phonon Raman peaks, strongly enhanced under resonance conditions, and the effects of the dopants on them are discussed in the framework of the 'cascade' model. It is suggested that the observed suppression of the higher-order LO phonon lines for ZnO:Mn:Al is caused by the dissociation of excitons in the heavily n-type doped material. On the basis of the cascade model interpretation of the higher-order Raman peaks in the resonant spectra, the LO phonon frequencies for wavevectors away from the Γ point are evaluated and compared to previously published phonon dispersion curves.
