Abstract
The Janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription pathway (JAK/STAT signaling pathway) is involved in the development of numerous cardiovascular diseases, although the specific role of this pathway in the pathogenesis of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) has not been elucidated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of the JAK/STAT signaling pathway in the onset of AMI in rats. We also tested the effect of this pathway on nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) expression in the myocardium and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) levels in the plasma of AMI rats. An AMI rat model was successfully established and AG490 was used to block the JAK/STAT signaling pathway. The plasma TNF-α levels of AMI rats were measured by ELISA. The protein expression of NF-κB in the myocardial cells of AMI rats was detected by immunohistochemistry. The infarction area was significantly smaller in rats treated with AG490 after coronary artery ligation (group C) compared with that in the myocardial infarction control group (group B). The left ventricular mass indices in the sham surgery group (group A) and group C were significantly lower compared with those of group B. Plasma TNF-α concentrations in group B were significantly higher compared with those of groups A and C. There were significantly fewer cardiomyocytes positively exhibiting NF-κB protein expression in groups A and C compared with group B. The JAK/STAT signaling pathway is involved in the onset of myocardial infarction and may also be involved in left ventricular remodeling after myocardial infarction. The involvement of the JAK/STAT signaling pathway in the onset of myocardial infarction may be correlated with its effects on the expression of NF-κB and TNF-α.

Abstract
Femoral vessel injuries are amongst the most common vascular injuries admited in busy trauma centers. The evolution of violence and the increase in penetrating trauma from the urban battlefields of city streets has raised the incidence of femoral vessel injuries, which account for approximately 70% of all peripheral vascular injuries. Despite the relatively low mortality associated with these injuries, there is a high level of technical complexity required for the performance of these repairs. Similarly, they incur low mortality but are associated with significantly high morbidity. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are the keys to successful outcomes with the main goals of managing ischemia time, restoring limb perfusion, accomplishing limb salvage and instituting rehabilitation as soon as possible.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Injury to the iliac vessels poses a serious and frustrating treatment dilemma for all trauma surgeons. Generally, patients present in profound shock secondary to severe hemorrhage from either iliac arterial, venous, or combined injuries. Despite improvements in our emergency medical services (EMS), rapid transport, standard training of trauma surgeons, and improved technology, the morbidity and mortality from iliac vessel injuries remain high, ranging from 25 to 40 %. MATERIALS AND METHODS A systematic review of the literature, with emphasis placed on the diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes of these injuries, incorporating the author's experience. CONCLUSIONS Injuries to the iliac vessel remain a daunting task, even after great advances in anatomic injury grading and damage control as well as advances in surgical techniques and critical care. Despite all the advances in treatment and appropriate management strategies, the morbidity and mortality from iliac vessel injuries remain high, demonstrating the complex challenge their treatment presents to even the modern-day trauma surgeon.

Abstract
The aims of this study were to explore the changes in expression of myocardial adiponectin (APN), changes in serum APN, and the significance of bisoprolol intervention in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) rats. An AMI rat model was established for the purposes of this study and was used for analysis of serum APN as determined by ELISA. Changes in expression of myocardial APN mRNA and APN protein in AMI rats were determined via reverse transcriptase (RT)–PCR and immunohistochemistry. Serum APN concentration and APN protein expression of the myocardium decreased significantly in the AMI groups compared with the sham operation group, with the lowest serum APN and APN protein expression on day 7 after AMI. On days 7 and 10 after AMI, the expression of myocardial APN mRNA in the AMI groups decreased significantly compared with the sham operation group. However, the APN mRNA increased on day 10 compared with that on day 7. Notably, there was an increase in levels of serum APN and myocardial APN expression after bisoprolol intervention. The expression of myocardial APN and serum APN decreased in AMI rats. APN may be an important protective factor against AMI. Bisoprolol can also protect against AMI because it increases APN expression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND c-fos may play a role in the pathogenesis of some diseases. The expression and function of c-fos in viral myocarditis (VMC) have not yet been reported. To study the change and significance of proto-oncogene c-fos in VMC is the objective of this experiment. METHODS An animal model of VMC was established via coxsackie virus B3 inoculation. VMC mice were then treated with a c-fos monoclonal antibody and isoproterenol and the protein and mRNA expression of c-fos were studied via immunohistochemical analysis and in situ hybridization. Results were simultaneously analyzed for the significance of c-fos expression in mice with VMC. RESULTS Myocardial necrosis and cell infiltration decreased after treatment with c-fos monoclonal antibody compared to control mice, while myocardial necrosis and cell infiltration were increased after treatment with isoproterenol. Positive cardiomyocytes with c-Fos expression increased at 3, 5, 7, 9, and 15 days after virus inoculation in VMC mice compared to control mice, while returning to almost normal levels at 35 days. The expression level of c-fos mRNA at 3 and 7 days after virus inoculation in VMC mice was also higher than that of control mice. CONCLUSIONS c-fos expression in the cardiomyocytes of VMC mice is significantly increased, c-fos plays an important role in myocardial lesions. The apparent increase in expression of c-fos is likely to be involved in the pathogenesis of VMC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Chronic inflammation is a major risk factor for systemic bone loss leading to osteoporotic fracture and substantial morbidity and mortality. Inflammatory cytokines, particularly tumour necrosis factor (TNF) and interleukin-1 (IL1), are thought to play a key role in the pathogenesis of inflammation-induced bone loss, but their exact roles are yet to be determined. METHODS To determine whether TNF directly triggers bone loss or requires IL1, human TNFalpha mice (hTNFtg) were crossed with mice lacking IL1alpha and IL1beta (IL1(-/-)hTNFtg). Systemic bone architecture was evaluated using CT scanning, static and dynamic bone histomorphometry and serum markers of bone metabolism. RESULTS hTNFtg mice developed severe bone loss accompanied by a severe distortion of bone microarchitecture. Bone trabeculae were thinner and decreased in numbers, resulting in increased trabecular separation. Histomorphometric analyses revealed strongly increased bone resorption in hTNFtg mice compared with wild-type mice. In contrast, IL1(-/-)hTNFtg mice were fully protected from systemic bone loss despite still developing inflammation in their joints. Lack of IL1 completely reversed increased osteoclast formation and bone resorption in hTNFtg mice and the increased levels of RANKL in these mice. Structural parameters and osteoclast and osteoblast numbers were indistinguishable from wild-type mice. CONCLUSIONS These data indicate that IL1 is essential for TNF-mediated bone loss. Despite TNF-mediated inflammatory arthritis, systemic bone is fully protected by the absence of IL1, which suggests that IL1 is an essential mediator of inflammatory osteopenia.

Abstract
Bolivia currently has one of the highest numbers of cases for human and canine rabies and is thus clue to the elimination process. The objective of the present study was to assess antibody seroprevalences against rabies in dogs vaccinated under field conditions and other factors that might influence the success of the on-going rabies control programmes in an endemic area of the disease, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia. All 240 study animals, selected using area-stratified random sampling, were investigated in April 2007. Test prevalences were adjusted for the imperfect test characteristics using the Rogan-Gladen estimator (deterministic and stochastic functions) and Bayesian inference. Ninety-four of the tested 240 vaccinated dogs were classified as test-positive for rabies-specific antibodies. With regard to adjusted overall antibody seroprevalence, Bayesian true prevalence estimates (41%, 95% CI: 37-46%) were lower than both of the Rogan-Gladen estimates. The effect of various epidemiological factors on post-vaccination response was also assessed.

Abstract
Abstract. Backtrajectory differences and clustering sensitivity to the meteorological input data are studied. Trajectories arriving in Southeast Spain (Elche), at 3000, 1500 and 500 m for the 7-year period 2000–2006 have been computed employing two widely used meteorological data sets: the NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis and the FNL data sets. Differences between trajectories grow linearly at least up to 48 h, showing faster growing after 72 h. A k-means cluster analysis performed on each set of trajectories shows differences in the identified clusters (main flows), partially because the number of clusters of each clustering solution differs for the trajectories arriving at 3000 and 1500 m. Trajectory membership to the identified flows is in general more sensitive to the input meteorological data than to the initial selection of cluster centroids.

Abstract
Rabies remains an important public health issue in Bolivia, South America. Public concern and fears are most focussed on dogs as the source of rabies. The objective of the present study was to assess immunity of an inactivated suckling mouse brain vaccine against canine rabies used for the official vaccination campaigns under field conditions in an endemic area of rabies in Bolivia. A total of 236 vaccinated and 44 unvaccinated dogs in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, selected using stratified random sampling, were investigated in order to obtain owned dog characteristics and antibody titres against rabies in April 2007. The proportion of vaccinated dogs with an antibody titre exceeded the protection threshold value of 0.5 EU/ml was 58% [95% confidence intervals (CI): 52-65], indicating that vaccination is likely to elicit an antibody response (odds ratio 6.3, 95% CI: 1.2-11.5). The range of geometric mean of antibody titre for vaccinated dogs (0.89 EU/ml; 95% CI: 0.75-1.04) was considered to meet the minimal acceptable level indicating an adequate immune response to the vaccine. However, the titre level was not satisfactory in comparison with the results from other field investigations with inactivated tissue culture vaccines. It is recommended for public health authorities to (1) consider modernizing their vaccine manufacturing method because the level of immunity induced by the current vaccine is comparably low, (2) conduct frequent vaccination campaigns to maintain high levels of vaccination coverage, and (3) actively manage the domestic dog population in the study area, which is largely responsible for rabies maintenance.

Abstract
N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors appear to play a central role in learning and memory processes, as the administration of antagonistic substances of these receptors hinders learning acquisition by using different behavioral paradigms (e.g., Riedel G, Platt B, Micheau J. Glutamate receptor function in learning and memory. Behavioural Brain Research, 2003;140 (1-2):1-47.). In the specific case of conditioned taste aversion, the administration of ketamine seems to affect the acquisition of conditioning when the drugs are administered before the experimental treatment. In this paper we present three experiments designed to analyze the effect of different ketamine doses (25 mg/kg, 50 mg/kg, 75 mg/kg and 120 mg/kg), administered between exposure to a taste (the conditioned stimulus) and the administration of the unconditioned stimulus, on the acquisition of a taste aversion association. The results reveal that higher ketamine doses (75 mg/kg and 120 mg/kg) have a disruptive effect on conditioned taste aversion by impeding the formation of the gustatory trace.

Abstract
It has been suggested that lamivudine therapy can preselect for hepatitis B virus (HBV) variants associated with resistance to entecavir (ETV) treatment. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of HBV variants associated with ETV resistance (rtI169T, rtT184G, rtS202I, rtM250V) in naive patients before and during lamivudine therapy. This retrospective study includes 111 untreated patients with chronic HBV infection, who were later treated with lamivudine therapy for at least 18 months. Serum samples were obtained before and during treatment. Variants related with ETV drug resistance were analysed by sequencing the HBV reverse transcriptase. Prior to lamivudine treatment, three cases (2.7%) had substitutions in the HBV polymerase gene corresponding to variants associated with ETV resistance (rtS202S/I). None of these patients had lamivudine-resistant variants. During lamivudine treatment, substitutions associated with ETV resistance were detected in 10 (9%) nonresponding patients who had not presented these changes before treatment. In 2/10 cases, these changes were observed before detection of lamivudine-resistant substitutions. In 10 of 12 nonresponders, one of them with ETV-related variants prior to treatment, these variants persisted to the end of therapy. Detection of variants related to ETV drug resistance in untreated patients with chronic HBV infection indicates that these variants are present in a significant proportion of the HBV quasispecies. This fact, as well as the emergence of ETV-resistant variants during lamivudine treatment, should be kept in mind when selecting candidates for ETV therapy.

Abstract
It has been suggested that lamivudine therapy can preselect for hepatitis B virus (HBV) variants associated with resistance to entecavir (ETV) treatment. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of HBV variants associated with ETV resistance (rtI169T, rtT184G, rtS202I, rtM250V) in naive patients before and during lamivudine therapy. This retrospective study includes 111 untreated patients with chronic HBV infection, who were later treated with lamivudine therapy for at least 18 months. Serum samples were obtained before and during treatment. Variants related with ETV drug resistance were analysed by sequencing the HBV reverse transcriptase. Prior to lamivudine treatment, three cases (2.7%) had substitutions in the HBV polymerase gene corresponding to variants associated with ETV resistance (rtS202S/I). None of these patients had lamivudine-resistant variants. During lamivudine treatment, substitutions associated with ETV resistance were detected in 10 (9%) nonresponding patients who had not presented these changes before treatment. In 2/10 cases, these changes were observed before detection of lamivudine-resistant substitutions. In 10 of 12 nonresponders, one of them with ETV-related variants prior to treatment, these variants persisted to the end of therapy. Detection of variants related to ETV drug resistance in untreated patients with chronic HBV infection indicates that these variants are present in a significant proportion of the HBV quasispecies. This fact, as well as the emergence of ETV-resistant variants during lamivudine treatment, should be kept in mind when selecting candidates for ETV therapy.

Abstract
A number of flavonoids isolated from Lonchocarpus spp. were evaluated for their antiprotozoal and cytotoxic activity. Flavone 6 and chalcone 7 were found to be the most active against Leishmania parasites and against cell cultures of Leukemia P388DI and adenocarcinoma prostate PC-3.

Abstract
Glaucoma is a chronic optic neuropathy leading to a degeneration of retinal ganglion cells. There is accumulating evidence that glaucomatous damage extends from retinal ganglion cells to vision centers in the brain. Degenerative changes are observed in magnocellular, parvocellular, and koniocellular pathways in the lateral geniculate nucleus, and these changes are related to intraocular pressure and the severity of optic nerve damage. In addition, recent studies show that there are also changes in the visual cortex in relation to varying degrees of retinal ganglion cell loss. In a rat model of glaucoma, we have recently demonstrated a reduction of retinal projections of retinal ganglion cells, not only on the visual system but also on the suprachiasmatic nucleus. Human studies suggest that the ganglion cell degeneration caused by glaucoma could lead to a lesion of the retinohypothalamic tract, which permits the synchronization of circadian rhythms.
