Abstract
OBJECTIVE This prospective randomized controlled study compared the efficacy and safety of two paraspinal muscle-sparing surgical approaches for the management of neurologically intact patients with thoracolumbar burst fractures and posterior ligamentous complex injuries. METHODS Patients were randomized to undergo either percutaneous (n=31) or paraspinal (n=30) fluoroscopically-guided pedicle screw-rod fixation, and were followed for ≥3 years. Preoperative postural reduction was attempted in all patients. RESULTS The percutaneous approach was associated with significantly less intraoperative blood loss and shorter duration of surgery and hospitalization, as well as less pain and better functional recovery at 3 months after surgery compared with the paraspinal approach. Paraspinal surgery resulted in significantly better correction of kyphosis and restoration of vertebral height compared with percutaneous surgery. There were no differences in long-term clinical outcomes between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS The minimally invasive percutaneous approach appears to be better in cases of successful postural reduction. The paraspinal approach results in better surgical correction and is, therefore, recommended for patients without successful postural reduction.

Abstract
We investigated 2 Chinese families with dyschromatosis symmetrica hereditaria (DSH) and search for mutations in the adenosine deaminase acting on RNA1 (ADAR1) gene in these 2 pedigrees. We performed a mutation analysis of the ADAR1 gene in 2 Chinese families with DSH and reviewed all articles published regarding ADAR1 mutations reported since 2003 by using PubMed. By direct sequencing, a 2-nucleotide AG deletion, 2099-2100delAG, was found in family 1, and a C→T mutation was identified at nucleotide 1420 that changed codon 474 from arginine to a translational termination codon in family 2. Two different pathogenic mutations were identified, c.2099-2100delAG and c.1420C>T, the former being a novel mutation, and the latter previously reported in 3 other families with DSH. To date, a total of 110 mutations in the ADAR1 gene have been reported, and 10 of them were recurrent; the mutations R474X, R1083C, R1096X, and R1155W might be the DSH-related hotspots.

Abstract
Previous studies have conflicting views on the effect of platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)/PDGF receptor (PDGFR) signaling on osteogenesis. The current study investigated the effect of PDGF receptor-beta (PDGFR-β) inhibition by AG-1295 on the osteogenic differentiation of the mouse pre-osteoblastic cell line MC3T3-E1. Osteogenic differentiation was induced by treatment with β-glycerophosphate, ascorbic acid, and dexamethasone along with or absent AG-1295. Results showed that AG-1295 significantly increased alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and enhanced the formation of mineralized nodules in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, treatment with AG-1295 resulted in up-regulated mRNA expression of the osteogenic marker genes collagen type I (Col1A), runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx2), osterix (Osx), tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (Tnap), and osteocalcin (Ocn). Consistent with its effect on osteoblast differentiation, AG-1295 also significantly suppressed the phosphorylation of Erk1/2 in MC3T3-E1 cells. In conclusion, findings suggest that blocking the PDGFR-β pathway with AG1295 markedly promotes osteoblast differentiation and matrix mineralization in mouse osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells and that the Erk1/2 pathway might participate in this process.

Abstract
Liver cancer is a common highly malignant tumor in China, with a high rate of recurrence and metastasis. The body's immune function is closely related with the occurrence and development of liver cancer, and low immunological function is an important reason why hepatic carcinoma is hard to cure and tend to recur and metastasize. At present, surgery-based comprehensive therapy plays a dominant role in the treatment of hepatic carcinoma; however, the majority of patients had lost their opportunities for surgical treatment when a definitive diagnosis was established. Interventional therapy is regarded as the first choice of nonsurgical treatment for hepatic carcinoma. Interventional therapy can not only result in coagulative tumor necrosis but also promote apoptosis of tumor cells. The body's immune function can be enhanced to improve the anti-tumor ability by interventional therapy, especially the cellular immune function. As a result, the metastasis and recurrence of hepatic carcinoma may be inhibited. The purpose of this article is to review the progress in understanding the effect of interventional therapy for hepatic carcinoma on immune function.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To summarize clinical outcomes of using medial transposition of the radial nerve in humeral shaft fracture fixation. METHODS From January 2005 to December 2009, 16 patients with humeral shaft fractures were treated with medial transposition of the radial nerve during open reduction and anterolateral plate fixation, included 12 males and 4 females ranging in age from 26 to 49 years, with a mean of 36 years. There were 7 fractures in the right and 9 in the left. According to AO classification, 6 fractures were type A3.2, 5 fractures were type A2.2, 2 fractures were type A1.2 and 3 fractures were type B2.2. The results were evaluated with DASH (disability of arm-shoulder-hand) Questionnaire by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), where 0 indicates normal upper extremity function, and 1 to 100 indicate varying degrees of damage to the function of the upper extremities. RESULTS There was no neurologic complication or postoperative would infection in this series. The followed-up period ranged from 20 to 46 (means 29) months postoperatively. The clinical outcomes were evaluated with DASH Questionnaire, indicating that all patients reached a normal value (value of 0). The function of the upper extremities recovered satisfactorily. There was no surgery-related complication. CONCLUSION Medial transposition of the radial nerve is safe and does not cause iatrogenic nerve injury. It protects the radial nerve during open reduction and anterolateral plate fixation of humeral shaft fractures.

Abstract
Nonunion of the tibia fracture may be caused by local infection, soft tissue defect, bone defect, fracture malaignment, bone marrow cavity block and degree of injury and so on. For less complications, central bone grafting is better than other methods for the treatment of selected nonunions of the tibia fracture. This procedure is performed through lateral approach, anterior to the fibula. Fresh autogenous bone from the iliac crest is used to form a central bridge between the tibia and fibula and the nonunion of the tibia at top and below. Application of internal fixation is beneficial to correct deformity and promote fracture healing. Central bone grafting is a safe and effective treatment for nonunions of the tibia.

Abstract
The influence of the discharge gap between cathode and anode on the discharge stability in a short vacuum arc (SVA) ion source is presented in this paper. Planar cathode and cylindrical hollow anode made of titanium are investigated. There is a great need in present accelerator injection research for SVA source to produce the small deviation of the ion current beam. Current research shows that increasing the short discharge gap can reduce the level of ion current deviation and ion charge deviation from 29% and 31% to 15% and 17%, respectively. A microplasma plume generation mechanism in SVA and scanning electron microscopic results can be used to explain this interesting phenomenon.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to identify alternative transcripts and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the 3'-untranslated region (3' UTR) of bovine malic enzyme (ME1) gene and to evaluate the extent to which polymorphisms were associated with meat quality and carcass traits in Chinese red cattle. Two transcripts, long transcript and short transcript that differ in the length of the 3' UTR were cloned. A single nucleotide polymorphism was detected in 3' UTR and a restriction site for endonuclease ME1-Dra I was also found. The result revealed that the ME1-Dra I genotypes had a significant effect on cooking loss, pH measured 24h post-mortem (pH(24h)) and eye muscle area (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the SNPs may be used as DNA markers to select for meat quality and carcass traits in Chinese red cattle.

Abstract
Glycerol dehydratase (GDHt) is the rate limiting enzyme in the biosynthesis of 1,3-propanediol from glycerol. The optimization of inducting process for recombinant GDHt from Klebsiella pneumoniae XJPD-Li carried out to increase specific activity and ratio of soluble form. The optimum condition was inducing under the isopropyl-beta-D-thiogalactoside concentration of 0.8 mM and the temperature of 20 degrees C for 3 h. Homogeneity of GDHt then was obtained by affinity chromatography, resulted in 2.11-fold purification and an overall yield of 47.5%. The optimum pH and reaction temperature of GDHt were pH 8.0 and 45 degrees C, respectively. The K(m) for glycerol, 1,2-propanediol, 1,2-ethanediol and coenzyme B12 were 0.48, 1.43, 3.07 mM, and 10.03 nM, respectively. The GDHt showed relatively stable even under temperature of 40 degrees C and a bit blunt to oxygen. The thermo-inactivation kinetic models were fit linear under different temperatures.

Abstract
Prion protein (PRNP) gene has been located at position q17 of chromosome 13 in cattle. The polymorphisms of PRNP gene might be associated with BSE susceptibility. In the present work, we investigated the polymorphisms of PRNP gene, including SNP in exon 3, 23-bp indel in promoter region, 12-bp indel in intron 1 in 2 Chinese indigenous cattle breeds of northeast China. Eighty-six animals from Yanbian (34) and Chinese Red Steppes (52) were genotyped at PRNP locus by analyzing genomic DNA. A total of 4 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) sites were revealed in the PRNP gene exon 3 of the 2 cattle breeds investigated. Three of these SNPs were non-synonymous mutations that resulted in the amino acid exchanges (K119N, S154N, and M177V), and one is silent nucleotide substitutions (A234G). The two amino acid mutations of S154N and M177V were detected only in Yanbian with a very low frequency (0.0147), and they appears to be absent in Chinese Red Steppes. The average gene heterozygosity (He), effective allele numbers (Ne), Shannon's information index (I) and polymorphism information content (PIC) were 0.3088, 1.5013, 0.3814 and 0.2000 in Yanbian, respectively, being relatively higher than that of Chinese Red Steppes (0.2885, 1.4985, 0.3462 and 0.1873, respectively). In 23-bp indel and 12-bp indel loci, three different genotypes were identified in both Yanbian and Chinese Red Steppes breeds. Based 23- and 12-bp indels, four haplotypes was constructed in the 2 Chinese cattle breeds, of which the 23-bp (-)/12-bp (-) was main haplotypes accounting for more than 50% of the total in both Yanbian and Chinese Red Steppes breeds. These results might be useful in understanding the genetic characteristics of PRNP gene in Chinese indigenous cattle breeds.

Abstract
The effect of 2,2'-dipyridyl (DP) on cerebral vasospasm was investigated in a double-injection rabbit model of subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH). Thirty-six animals were divided between four groups: control (sham-operated), SAH (model alone), SAH + DP (the SAH model in which DP dissolved in dimethyl sulphoxide [DMSO] was injected once daily for 5 days into the cisterna magna), and SAH + DMSO (the SAH model in which DMSO [vehicle] was injected daily for 5 days). There were significant differences in the basilar artery luminal area, wall thickness, neurological deficit score and vasospasm index between the SAH + DP and SAH groups. There was a significant negative correlation between arterial luminal area and arterial wall thickness, and also between the neurological deficit score and vasospasm index. Cells that were positive for terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated deoxyuridine triphosphate nick end-labelling (TUNEL) and p53 expression were significantly increased in the SAH + DMSO and SAH groups, but not in the SAH + DP group, versus controls. Thus, DP may attenuate cerebral vasospasm after SAH by suppressing p53-induced apoptosis in the cerebral vessels.

Abstract
Verticillium dahliae Kleb. causes Verticillium wilt in large numbers of crops all over the world. Common symptoms caused by the pathogen include yellowing, wilting of leaves, and discoloration in vascular tissue of the stem. In June 2007, symptoms of Verticillium wilt were observed in a grapevine (Vitis vinifera) field in the Shihezi Region of Xinjiang. To isolate the pathogen, stem segments (0.5 cm long) were surface sterilized with 1% HgCl2 for 1 min and then dipped in 70% ethanol for 10 s. The sterilized tissues were rinsed with sterile water and incubated in the dark for 7 days at 25°C on potato dextrose agar (PDA) medium. The fungus growing from the diseased tissue showed dark colonies that produced verticillate conidiophores with two to three layers with colorless, ovoid, unicellular conidia and small, black microsclerotia, which are characteristics of V. dahliae (3). To confirm its identity, ribosomal DNA fragments (regions ITS1, 5.8S rDNA, and ITS4) were PCR amplified with primer pair ITS1/ITS4 (4) and sequenced (GenBank Accession No. FJ475122). Sequential analysis revealed that the rDNA region of the fungus isolated from grapevine was identical to that of a Greek strain of V. dahliae (GenBank Accession No. AF104926). Furthermore, the specific fragment (1,500 bp) of nondefoliating pathotype of V. dahliae (1) was PCR amplified from 24 grapevine isolates of V. dahliae collected in Xinjiang, indicating that the V. dahliae pathogen from Xinjiang is a nondefoliating pathotype. To verify the causal role of the isolated fungus, pathogenicity assays were conducted on 1-year-old seedlings of the Centennial seedless cultivar. Trimmed roots were submerged in a conidial suspension (1 × 106 conidia/ml) for 30 min and sterile tap water was used as a control. The seedlings were transplanted into a pot containing 2:1 sterile mixture of peat/perlite (vol/vol). Plants were grown in a greenhouse at 25°C. Six Verticillium isolates were found to cause the same symptoms as in fields 50 days after inoculation. V. dahliae was successfully reisolated from the stems of inoculated plants. Control seedlings inoculated in sterile tap water remained healthy. Because grapevine (Vitis vinifera) is an economically important crop for fruit and winemaking material in Xinjiang, Verticillium wilt poses a threat. The disease has been previously reported in the United States (2), but to our knowledge, this is the first report from China. References: (1) E. Pérez Artés et al. Eur. J. Abstract
Segmental bone defects are very severe in open fractures of the lower extremity. Traditional treatment requires skeletal stabilization, usually by external fixation, followed by free tissue transfer for soft tissue coverage, and vascularized or nonvascularized bone grafting for the skeletal defect. The bone transport distraction osteogenesis is a new method for treating bone defects. The range of bone loss for which bone transport is indicated 3 to 12 cm. The method required only small bone grafts to stimulate healing at the bone defect site, whereas patients in the conventionally treated group needed a larger volume of cancellous bone graft. Donor site morbidity was less in the method, and no free-tissue transfers were required. Disadvantages of the method was a complex, time-consuming reconstruction. In the appropriately selected patient, when the surgeon is experienced in the technique, treatment by bone transport distraction osteogenesis offers unique advantages for certain cases of the bone defect.

METHODS From March 2003 to October 2005, 5 cases scalp defect (4 male, 1 female) were reconstructed with the technique. The age ranged from 26 to 52 years (mean 32 years). The scalp defect ranged from 3 cmx3.5 cm to 4 cmx5 cm. Four cases were reconstructed with bilateral flap and one case was reconstructed with unilateral flaps. RESULTS All patients were followed-up from 10 to 42 months (mean, 28 months). All the flaps survived completely and showed good hair growth and had satisfactory clinical results. CONCLUSION Repair of scalp defect using V-Y-S rotation flap technique is simple with no need for a skin graft and can be performed quickly, there is minimal morbidity and the outcome is highly successful.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To summarize clinical application of the sural medial gastrocnemius island muscle flap to cover wound of infection on upper region of the tibial. METHODS Nine patients (7 men, 2 women) with soft tissue defects on the upper region of the tibial underwent reconstruction with the sural medial gastrocnemius island muscle flap. The age ranged from 21 to 60 years old (mean, 34 years). The immediate coverage of the muscle flaps were performed by a meshed split-thickness skin graft. The donor site was closed directly. The donor leg was ipsilateral in all cases. RESULTS Only one case sustained superficial infection postoperative and the gradual wound healed by daily wound dressings. All the muscle flaps and skin graft had survived completely without major complication with satisfactory clinical results. All patients were followed-up for 13 months to 4 years (mean 21 months), the donor site was healing, there was no remarkable donor site morbidity. CONCLUSION The sural medial gastrocnemius island muscle flap is nourished by the medial sural artery. The muscle flaps seem to have highly vascularize, a constant vascular anatomy and a long vascular pedicle. The muscle flap is thin and suitable for repairing soft tissue defect on the upper region of the tibial.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To summarize clinical application of one-stage toenail lengthening in free second toe transfer for reconstruction of the thumb (finger). METHODS Nine patients (male 7, female 2) underwent thumb (finger) reconstruction with second toe transfer were treated by one-stage toenail lengthening technique. Eight were the thumb and 1 was the index finger. Patients aged from 18 to 46 years, with an average of 25 years. A rectangle skin was resected at 0.5 cm away from the eponychium, which was 0.2 cm high and as wide as the toenail. Then stripped U shape flap gently towards proximal end and sutured it. During the operation, the injury of the subcutaneous vascular network should be avoided. RESULTS Superficial infection at donor area happened in 1 case and was healed by changing dressings. All the reconstruction thumbs (fingers) had survived completely. 2 to 3 mm extending of toenail length was obtained and the appearance of thumb (finger) was improved. There was no growth deformation of toenail. After 7 to 24 months follow up (the average time 13 months), the appearance of the nail was good. CONCLUSIONS One-stage toenail lengthening in free second toe transfer for reconstruction of the thumb (finger), which can obtain a satisfactory appearance of the nail and have no influence on the motion of the reconstruction thumb (finger), is a simple and an effective operative procedure.
