Particle-yield modification in jetlike azimuthal dihadron correlations in Pb-Pb collisions at √s(NN)=2.76 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2012; 108:092301. Abstract
The yield of charged particles associated with high-p(t) trigger particles (8<p(t)<15 GeV/c) is measured with the ALICE detector in Pb-Pb collisions at √s(NN)=2.76 TeV relative to proton-proton collisions at the same energy. The conditional per-trigger yields are extracted from the narrow jetlike correlation peaks in azimuthal dihadron correlations. In the 5% most central collisions, we observe that the yield of associated charged particles with transverse momenta p(t)>3 GeV/c on the away side drops to about 60% of that observed in pp collisions, while on the near side a moderate enhancement of 20%-30% is found.

Abstract
The ALICE Collaboration has studied J/ψ production in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV at the LHC through its muon pair decay. The polar and azimuthal angle distributions of the decay muons were measured, and results on the J/ψ polarization parameters λ(θ) and λ(φ) were obtained. The study was performed in the kinematic region 2.5<y<4, 2<p(t)<8 GeV/c, in the helicity and Collins-Soper reference frames. In both frames, the polarization parameters are compatible with zero, within uncertainties.

Negligible penetration of incidental amounts of alpha-hydroxy acid from rinse-off personal care products in human skin using an in vitro static diffusion cell model. Toxicol In Vitro 2011; 25:2041-7. [PMID: 21871557 DOI: 10.1016/j.tiv.2011.08.005] [Citation(s) in RCA: 6] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.5] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 05/19/2011] [Revised: 07/29/2011] [Accepted: 08/05/2011] [Indexed: 10/17/2022]
Abstract
Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), primarily glycolic and lactic acids, are widely used in cosmetics to alleviate dyspigmentation, photodamage, and other aging skin conditions and as pH adjusters. Glycolic acid reportedly enhances skin damage after repeated ultraviolet light exposure, e.g., increased sunburn cell formation. This study assessed potential in vitro skin penetration of lactic acid and malic acid incorporated into rinse-off personal care products, compared with rinse-off and leave-on exposures to glycolic acid (10%, pH 3.5) in a reference lotion. Radiolabeled AHA-fortified shampoo, conditioner, and lotion were evenly applied as single doses to human epidermal membranes mounted in static diffusion cells (not occluded). Exposures were 1-3 min (rinse-off) or 24 h (leave-on). Epidermal penetration of malic acid and lactic acid from the rinse-off shampoo and conditioner, respectively, was negligible, with >99% removed by rinsing, a negligible portion remaining in the stratum corneum (≤0.15%), and even less penetrating into the viable epidermis (≤0.04%). Glycolic acid penetration from the leave-on reference lotion was 1.42 μg equiv./cm2/h, with total absorbable dose recovery (receptor fluid plus epidermis) of 2.51%, compared to 0.009%, 0.003%, and 0.04% for the rinse-off reference lotion, shampoo (malic acid), and conditioner (lactic acid) exposures, respectively. Dermal penetration of AHAs into human skin is pH-, concentration-, and time-dependent. Alpha-hydroxy acids in rinse-off shampoos and conditioners are almost entirely removed from the skin within minutes by rinsing (resulting in negligible epidermal penetration). This suggests that ultraviolet radiation-induced skin effects of AHA-containing rinse-off products are negligible.

Complete electric dipole response and the neutron skin in 208Pb. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2011; 107:062502. Abstract
A benchmark experiment on (208)Pb shows that polarized proton inelastic scattering at very forward angles including 0° is a powerful tool for high-resolution studies of electric dipole (E1) and spin magnetic dipole (M1) modes in nuclei over a broad excitation energy range to test up-to-date nuclear models. The extracted E1 polarizability leads to a neutron skin thickness r(skin) = 0.156(-0.021)(+0.025) fm in (208)Pb derived within a mean-field model [Phys. Rev. C 81, 051303 (2010)], thereby constraining the symmetry energy and its density dependence relevant to the description of neutron stars.

Abstract
We report on the first measurement of the triangular v3, quadrangular v4, and pentagonal v5 charged particle flow in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV measured with the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We show that the triangular flow can be described in terms of the initial spatial anisotropy and its fluctuations, which provides strong constraints on its origin. In the most central events, where the elliptic flow v2 and v3 have similar magnitude, a double peaked structure in the two-particle azimuthal correlations is observed, which is often interpreted as a Mach cone response to fast partons. We show that this structure can be naturally explained from the measured anisotropic flow Fourier coefficients.

Abstract
577 Background: We conducted a phase I/II study of novel transcatheter arterial chemoembolization with cisplatin powder and degradable starch microspheres (DSM) to determine the recommended dose (RD) and to assess the efficacy and safety. Methods: Cisplatin powder and DSM mixing solution was administered followed by the injection of DSM alone via hepatic artery every 4 weeks. In phase I, cohorts of 3 patients received escalating dose of cisplatin (50, 65 and 80mg/m2), and RD was estimated during the first cycle. In the phase II, more RD patients were added to assess tumor response, toxicity, hepatic progression free survival (H-PFS) and 6-month overall survival (OS) rate. Results: A total of 24 patients (male 16, female 8; mean age 63.0, range 45-79; colon 15, rectal 9) were enrolled in this study. FOLFOX had previously been administered to all patients, irinotecan-containing regimen to 12 and bevacizumab and/or cetuximab to 14. During phase I (n= 9 patients), maximum tolerated dose was not reached and cisplatin 80 mg/m2 was recommended for a phase II. Phase II enrolled 15 patients. The following grade 3 toxicities were observed: platelets reduction 16.6%, aspartate transaminase elevation 38.8%, alanine transaminase elevation 16.6%, hyponatremia 11.1%, cholecystitis 5.5%. The tumor response rate was 53.3% (CR 0, PR 8, SD 6, and PD 1). The median H-PFS was 6.3 months (95% CI; 2.71 to 9.88) and 6 -month OS rate was 86.7%. Conclusions: This phase I/II study demonstrates that novel transcatheter arterial chemoembolization with 80 mg/m2 cisplatin powder and DSM is well tolerable, and can produce a high response rate with encouraging survival duration. Further clinical trials are warranted. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Abstract
292 Background: Conventional transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) using with ethiodized oil mixed with epirubicin or doxorubicin hydrochloride mainly has been widely adapted for intermediate-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, cisplatin has stronger effect for HCC than epirubicin and in the recent years cisplatin powder was commercially available in Japan and then we can use cisplatin powder mixed with ethiodized oil for HCC. We conducted a phase II study to assess the safety and efficacy of segmental or subsegmental (Seg/Subseg) TACE using a suspension of cisplatin powder mixed with ethiodized oil for unresectable HCC. Methods: Twenty patients with single-nodule HCC that was not indicated for surgical treatment or local ablation therapy were enrolled in this study. Seg/Subseg-TACE was performed by using a 2-F tip microcatheter at a distal portion of the subsegmental artery supplying the tumor. Subsequently, the feeding artery was embolized with gelatin sponge particles. The suspension was prepared by mixing 100 mg of cisplatin powder with 10 ml of ethiodized oil. Primary endpoint of this phase II trial was 2-year local disease free survival (DFS); secondary endpoints evaluated were the safety, time to progression (TTP), and 2-year overall survival (OS) rate. Results: A total of 20 patients (male 15, female 5; mean age 72.4, range 62-83; Child Pugh's A 20) were treated single nodule HCC with Seg/subseg TACE. Median tumor size was 2.6cm (range1.2-5.0cm). The 2-year local DFS was 63.2 %. The following grade 3 or 4 toxicities were observed: platelets reduction 5%, aspartate transaminase elevation 55%, alanine transaminase elevation 40% and alkaline phosphatase elevation 5%. The median TTP was 17.6 months (95%CI, 5.25 to 29.9) and the 2-year OS rate was 94.7%. Conclusions: This phase II study demonstrates that segmental or subsegmental transcatheter arterial chemoembolization using a suspension of cisplatin powder mixed with ethiodized oil is well tolerable, and may achieve significant local tumor control and prolong survival. Further clinical trials are warranted. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Abstract
307 Background: Unresectable pancreatic cancer is poorly responsive to conventional therapies. We conducted a phase I/II study to ascertain the recommended dose (RD) of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in arterial infusion chemotherapy combined with systemic gemcitabine in unresectable pancreatic cancer and to evaluate the safety and efficacy. Methods: 5-FU was administered through the pancreatic and hepatic arteries via the port system as a 5-hour infusion on days 1, 8, and 15 every 4 weeks for 5 cycles. Gemcitabine was administered in 30-minute intravenous infusion at the same days. In phase I, escalating 5-FU doses for level 1 and 2 was set at 750mg and 1,000mg/m2, respectively. Dose of coadministered gemcitabine (1,000 mg/m2) was fixed. Using a 3+3 study design, dose-limiting toxicity (DLT) was assessed, and RD was estimated in the first cycle. In phase II, more RD patients were added to assess tumor response, toxicity, overall survival and progression-free survival. Results: During the phase I, 7 patients were enrolled. DLT was not observed. One patient dropped out of this study because of insufficient drug distribution via the port system. Assuming RD at 1,000mg/m2 of 5-FU, the phase II enrolled a total of 16 patients (metastatic, 14; local advanced, 2). The tumor response rate was 68.8% (CR 0, PR 11, SD 2, PD 3). The grade 3 toxicities of neutropenia (6%) and thrombocytopenia (6%) were observed. Median overall and progression-survival times (all patients) were 9.8 and 6.2 months, respectively. Conclusions: Arterial infusion 5-FU 1,000mg/m2 combined with full-dose systemic gemcitabine was tolerable and can produce a high response rate with encouraging survival duration for unresectable pancreatic cancer. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Abstract
Combination therapy with adefovir dipivoxil (ADV) and lamivudine (LAM) is recommended for patients infected with LAM-refractory hepatitis B virus (HBV). However, the effects of such therapy on renal function and serum phosphorus levels have not been fully evaluated. Combination therapy with ADV and LAM was given to 37 patients infected with LAM-refractory HBV, including 17 with hepatic cirrhosis. Serum HBV DNA levels decreased to below 2.6 log(10) copies/mL in 23 (62%) of 37 patients at 12 months, 25 (78%) of 32 patients at 24 months, and 16 (84%) of 19 patients at 36 months. Except for one cirrhotic patient, serum alanine aminotransferase levels were below 50 IU/L in all patients during combination therapy. Serum creatinine levels increased in 14 (38%) of 37 patients, and serum phosphate levels decreased to below 2.5 mg/mL in 6 (16%) of 37 patients during combination therapy. Patients who received combination therapy for 36 months or longer had a significantly incidence of elevated serum creatinine levels. Fanconi syndrome occurred in a 57-year-old woman with cirrhosis after ADV was added to LAM. Combination therapy with ADV and LAM can maintain biochemical remission in patients with LAM-refractory HBV. However, the dosing interval of ADV should be adjusted according to renal function and serum phosphate levels in patients receiving long-term treatment.

Abstract
A 6-year-old boy was diagnosed with aggravation of diffuse supravalvular aortic stenosis (SVAS). The pressure gradient between the sinus of Valsalva and ascending aorta was 48 mmHg. The diameter of the sino-tubular junction was 7 mm and the ascending aorta was hypoplastic. We performed Myers operation because 3 sinus reconstructions had resulted in superior hemodynamics and reductions in both mortality rate and need for reoperation. We avoided using autologous pericardium because of the possibility of shrinkage and aneurysm. We could easily perform patch enlargement of the ascending aorta by selective cerebral perfusion. The postoperative course was excellent and there was no SVAS or aortic regurgitation (AR). A catheterization showed the pressure gradient was 5 mmHg with trivial AR upon follow-up at 1 year.

Abstract
Occlusion of a coronary ostium due to fusion of the aortic cusp to the aortic wall is a rare but noteworthy anomaly, because it may cause a sudden death. We report a 9-year-old girl with severe stenosis of the left coronary ostium by the aortic cusp that fused to the aortic wall. The left coronary flow was restored by excision of the adherent left aortic cusp, and aortic valve replacement was performed with the technique of bilateral enlargement of the aortic valve ring (Yamaguchi's method) to prevent prosthesis-patient mismatch in the future. The patient had an uneventful recovery and was discharged 14th postoperative day (POD). Postoperative angiography showed no coronary ostial stenosis.

Abstract
A 53-year-old woman with a double, double, double (DDD) pacemaker due to complete atrioventricular block was admitted to our hospital with a diagnosis of congestive heart failure. At the time of admission, she was in a hypoxic state with cyanosis and clubbed finger. The ultrasonic cardiogram showed a severe degree of tricuspid valve regurgitation and a thin left ventricular septal wall. Transesophageal echocardiography revealed a patent foramen ovale (PFO) with continuous right to left shunt flow. She was diagnosed with cardiac sarcoidosis with hypoxemia caused by PFO. PFO closure and tricuspid valve annuloplasty (DeVega method) were performed. Following surgery, the patient's hypoxemia improved and the cyanosis disappeared. The patient was discharged 37 days after the operation.

Abstract
We study a two-dimensional reaction-diffusion equation for calcium oscillation with a pacemaker region. When the pacemaker entrains the whole system, circular waves are observed as a target pattern. However, if the pace of the pacemaker is too fast, the pulse propagation to the outer region sometimes fails in a chaotic manner. We find that spiral waves are spontaneously created at the interface between the pacemaker region and the outer region.

Abstract
AIMS The aim of the study was to assess the short-term efficacy of intravitreal injections of bevacizumab for polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV). METHODS Intravitreal bevacizumab (1 mg) was injected into 11 eyes of 11 patients with PCV in this retrospective, interventional case series. The main outcome measure was the change in the polypoidal vessels on indocyanine green angiography (IA) 3 months after injection. The foveal height determined by optical coherence tomography and the best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) also were evaluated before and after treatment. RESULTS At baseline, subretinal fluid was observed in five eyes and a pigment epithelial detachment in eight eyes. The foveal height 1 month after injection decreased significantly (p = 0.023), but at 3 months, no significant decrease was observed, although an additional injection was administrated in five of 11 eyes. The IA at 3 months showed resolution of polyps in one eye but residual or enlarged lesions in the other ten eyes. The BCVA did not improve significantly, although the subjects had relatively good BCVA at baseline (mean 0.45). CONCLUSION Intravitreal injection of bevacizumab may reduce the fluid from PCV but seems to be ineffective for diminishing its choroidal vascular changes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Protease activated receptor-2 (PAR-2) has been implicated in cellular proliferation, invasion and metastasis with angiogenesis in various tumors. This prompted us to study the role of PAR-2 in tumor advancement of ovarian cancers. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty-eight patients underwent surgery for ovarian cancers. In ovarian cancers, PAR-2 histoscores and mRNA levels were determined by immunohistochemistry and real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, respectively. Patient prognosis was analysed with a 36-month survival rate. Microvessel counts were determined by immunohistochemistry for CD31 and factor VIII-related antigen and the rate of cell proliferation was determined by immunohistochemistry for Ki67. RESULTS Immunohistochemical staining revealed distribution of PAR-2, dominantly in cancer cells and faintly in stromal cells of the tumor. PAR-2 histoscores in cancer cells and mRNA levels both significantly increased in ovarian cancers with clinical stages (I < II < III < IV, P < 0.05), regardless of histopathological type. The 36-month survival rate of 24 patients with high PAR-2 was poor (58%), while that of the other 24 patients with low PAR-2 was significantly higher (83%). There were significant correlations between PAR-2 histoscores in cancer cells and mRNA levels with microvessel counts and with the rate of cell proliferation in ovarian cancers. CONCLUSIONS PAR-2 was up-regulated during ovarian cancer progression. Therefore, PAR-2 might work on tumor advancement of ovarian cancers via angiogenic activity and is considered to be a novel prognostic indicator in ovarian cancers.
