The glutamate receptor subtype mediating parallel fibre-Purkinje cell transmission in rabbit cerebellar cortex

Responses of Purkinje cells to parallel fibre stimulation and to ionophoretically applied glutamate agonists, L-glutamate, L-aspartate, quisqualate, kainate and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA), were extracellularly recorded in a superficial folium of the dorsal paraflocculus of high-decerebrate rabbits. NMDA caused an inhibition of simple spike discharge from Purkinje cells. 2-Amino-5-phosphonovalerate (APV), a selective NMDA receptor antagonist, effectively antagonized this inhibition. However, APV did not antagonize the excitation of Purkinje cells caused by quisqualate or parallel fibre stimulation. By contrast, both kynurenate and gamma-D-glutamylglycine (gamma-DGG) effectively antagonized the excitation of Purkinje cells by parallel fibre stimulation in a dose-dependent manner. Both kynurenate and gamma-DGG also antagonized the excitation of Purkinje cells caused by quisqualate, L-glutamate, L-aspartate or kainate. However, the antagonism was more prominent to L-aspartate and kainate than to quisqualate and L-glutamate. Quisqualate response was antagonized to an extent comparable with the response to parallel fibre stimulation. These results indicate that the receptor for the neurotransmitter at parallel fibre-Purkinje cell synapses is of quisqualate-specific type. The present data are consistent with the evidence that L-glutamate is the endogenous transmitter at these synapses.

Neuronal correlate of pictorial short-term memory in the primate temporal cortex

It has been proposed that visual-memory traces are located in the temporal lobes of the cerebral cortex, as electric stimulation of this area in humans results in recall of imagery. Lesions in this area also affect recognition of an object after a delay in both humans and monkeys, indicating a role in short-term memory of images. Single-unit recordings from the temporal cortex have shown that some neurons continue to fire when one of two or four colours are to be remembered temporarily. But neuronal responses selective to specific complex objects, including hands and faces, cease soon after the offset of stimulus presentation. These results led to the question of whether any of these neurons could serve the memory of complex objects. We report here a group of shape-selective neurons in an anterior ventral part of the temporal cortex of monkeys that exhibited sustained activity during the delay period of a visual short-term memory task. The activity was highly selective for the pictorial information to be memorized and was independent of the physical attributes such as size, orientation, colour or position of the object. These observations show that the delay activity represents the short-term memory of the categorized percept of a picture.

Aneurysms of the posterior cerebral artery: report of ten cases

Ten cases of posterior cerebral artery (PCA) aneurysm are presented. There were 13 aneurysms in the 10 patients: 6 saccular, 5 fusiform, 1 broad-based, and 1 giant fusiform serpentine aneurysm. Eight patients underwent operation: clipping for 2 saccular aneurysms, trapping for 1 saccular and 3 fusiform aneurysms, and coating for 2 fusiform or broad-based aneurysms. Microsurgical cerebral revascularization techniques were attempted in 2 cases: after a fusiform aneurysm had been excised, end-to-end anastomosis of the residual two ends of the PCA was performed and, after a giant serpentine aneurysm had been trapped, the superficial temporal artery was anastomosed transcortically to the distal PCA. Two patients died before operation because of rebleeding and vasospasm. Postoperative neurological deficits include contralateral hemiparesis, homonymous hemianopsia, hemihypesthesia, and ipsilateral 3rd nerve palsy. Our results suggest that, despite the good collateral circulation of the PCA, some ischemic events may occur after trapping procedures and that cerebral revascularization techniques may have some benefit in the treatment of unclippable aneurysms in this region.

Functional forms and the relevance of contiguous migration in the study of migration and employment growth

The authors examine internal migration in the United States and emphasize the importance of decomposing total migration into contiguous and noncontiguous migration flows when analyzing employment change. "In this study, a simultaneous-equation model containing two equations, one for migration and the other for employment growth, has been specified in a general form and estimated by the 2SLS method for total, contiguous and noncontiguous migration flows. Results obtained from the use of 1970 Census data show that noncontiguous migration behaves significantly [differently] from contiguous migration, and that noncontiguous migration, rather than total migration, should be used for the study of factors affecting interstate migration. Results also indicate that the log-linear functional form commonly used in empirical studies cannot be accepted statistically."

Fusiform posterior cerebral artery aneurysm treated with excision and end-to-end anastomosis. Case report

A case of a ruptured fusiform aneurysm of the posterior cerebral artery is reported. The aneurysm was excised and end-to-end anastomosis was carried out between the two ends of the posterior cerebral artery. There is no previous report of a posterior cerebral artery aneurysm treated with this technique. The pertinent literature is reviewed and the significance of this technique in the treatment of unclippable cerebral aneurysms is discussed.

Changes in elasticities of interstate migration: implication of alternative functional forms

A general form and the procedure to estimate it have been introduced. 1970 [U.S.] Census data for the 48 contiguous states have been used to estimate the parameters in the general form."

Genetics of cleft lip and cleft palate in China

During the past 10 years, 60 cases of cleft lip with or without cleft palate [CL(P)] were recorded among 45,072 newborns at Shanghai International Peace Maternity and Infant Hospital, China. The incidence was 1.33 per 1,000 births. The family histories of 163 CL(P) patients were analyzed. The incidences of CL(P) in the first-, second-, and third-degree relatives of CL(P) patients were 11/246 (4.47%), 10/1,032 (0.97%), and 6/1,727 (0.35%), respectively. Of the 163 probands, three had a history of consanguinity of the parents (1.8%), in contrast to 0.77% in the general population. These data are suggestive of multifactorial inheritance. The heritability of CL(P) in our study calculated by Falconer's formula was 77.6%.

K+ transport in mitoplasts

K+ transport into mitoplasts, prepared by digitonin disruption and removal of the outer membranes from rat liver mitochondria, has been studied. Unidirectional K+ influx has been measured by means of 42K, in the presence of the respiratory substrate succinate. K+ influx is inhibited by CN-, antimycin A and dicyclohexylcarbodiimide, but is insensitive to oligomycin. A linear dependence of the reciprocal of the K+ -influx rate on the reciprocal of the external K+ concentration is observed. Under the conditions studied, the apparent Km for K+ of the transport mechanism is approx. 6 mM, while the Vmax of K+ influx is approx. 5 mu mol K+/g protein per min. The rate of K+ influx increases with increasing external pH over the range from 6.8 to 8.0. The observed kinetics, pH dependence and inhibitor sensitivity are essentially similar to previously reported characteristics of K+ transport into intact rat liver mitochondria. It is concluded that the outer mitochondrial membrane does not not have a role in controlling K+ flux into rat liver mitochondria.

Female sexual arousal and the menstrual cycle

Self-reports of sexual arousal were significantly affected by conditions under which they were elicited. Such self-reports in women not taking oral contraceptives were congruent with a hormonal basis for such arousal only when the women were "unaware" that the study investigated sexual arousal as a function of the menstrual cycle. The "unaware" condition was operationalized by means of daily self-reports elicited from males and females for 11 weeks under the guise of a study of biological rhythms. A composite of one to three menstrual cycles for 26 women not taking oral contraceptives showed that sexual arousal during the luteal phase, when progesterone is relatively high, was significantly lower compared to peaks around ovulation, and premenstrual and late menstrual days (p less than .02). For the "aware" condition, women were asked to remember moods for the premenstrual, menstruating and luteal phases of the very last cycle on which they had just finished giving "unaware" daily self-reports. A 2 x 3 analysis of variance (with "aware" versus "unaware" conditions and premenstrual, menstruating, and luteal phases of the last cycle as the two independent variables) yielded a significant interaction effect with F = 6.5, df = 2, 50, p less than .003. In the "unaware" condition, sexual arousal was reported lowest during the luteal phase. The opposite pattern was reported in the "aware" condition. The results suggest that cyclical variability may not be simply due to women's misattributions. However, "awareness" has an effect on self-report measures and may bias reports according to cultural stereotypes. Daily self-reports of sexual arousal for men were averaged over the duration of the study. This average was 3.16. The equivalent average for women not taking oral contraceptives was 2.35 and for women taking oral contraceptives was 2.62. Analysis of variance of these three means yielded a significant difference with F = 4.49, df = 2, 59, p less than .02.
