Abstract
We have experimentally studied a magnetopiezoelectric effect predicted recently for magnetic metals with low crystal symmetries. In EuMnBi_{2} with antiferromagnetic Mn moments at 77 K, dynamic displacements emerge along the a direction upon application of ac electric fields in the c direction and increase in proportion to the applied electric fields. Such displacements are not observed along the c direction of EuMnBi_{2} or EuZnBi_{2} with nonmagnetic Zn ions. As temperature increases from 77 K, the displacement signals decrease and disappear at about 200 K, above which electric conduction changes from coherent to incoherent. These results demonstrate the emergence of the magnetopiezoelectric effect in a magnetic metal lacking inversion and time-reversal symmetries.

Abstract
Immunoglobulin (Ig)G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is an unusual complication of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We report a case in which belimumab proved efficacious for not only SLE, but also IgG4-RD. A 58-year-old Japanese woman had suffered from photodermatosis and erythema on the limbs for 20 years. She presented in slight fever and fatigue since 2016. Laboratory data showed hypergammaglobulinemia, proteinuria and positive results for anti-nuclear antibody and anti-double-stranded DNA antibody. Furthermore, elevated levels of serum IgG4 were detected. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography disclosed multiple areas of poor enhancement in the kidneys. The patient was diagnosed with lupus nephritis and IgG4-RD from renal biopsy. Treatment was started with prednisolone at 40 mg/day and mycophenolate mofetil. Proteinuria and serological findings improved initially, but tapering the dose of glucocorticoid proved difficult. After treatment was started with belimumab, clinical symptoms and proteinuria resolved completely. The dose of glucocorticoid was successfully tapered and serum concentration of IgG4 fell further. This appears to represent the first report of a case in which both SLE and IgG4-RD were effectively treated using belimumab.

Abstract
Previously, we reported that the non-viable immunomodulatory Bifidobacterium infantis MCC12 and Bifidobacterium breve MCC1274 strains (paraimmunobiotic bifidobacteria) were able to increase the protection against rotavirus infection in bovine intestinal epithelial (BIE) cells. In order to gain insight into the influence of paraimmunobiotic bifidobacteria on the innate antiviral immune response of BIE cells, their effect on the transcriptomic response triggered by Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3) activation was investigated. By using microarray technology and qPCR analysis, we obtained a global overview of the immune genes involved in the innate antiviral immune response in BIE cells. Activation of TLR3 by poly(I:C) in BIE cells significantly increased the expression of interferon (IFN)-α and IFN-β, several interferon-stimulated genes, cytokines, and chemokines. It was also observed that both paraimmunobiotic bifidobacteria differently modulated immune genes expression in poly(I:C)-challenged BIE cells. Most notable changes were found in genes involved in antiviral defence (IFN-β, MX1, OAS1X, MDA5, TLR3, STAT2, STAT3), cytokines (interleukin (IL)-6), and chemokines (CCL2, CXCL2, CXCL6) that were significantly increased in bifidobacteria-treated BIE cells. B. infantis MCC12 and B. breve MCC1274 showed quantitative and qualitative differences in their capacities to modulate the innate antiviral immune response in BIE cells. B. breve MCC1274 was more efficient than the MCC12 strain to improve the production of type I IFNs and antiviral factors, an effect that could be related to its higher ability to protect against rotavirus replication in BIE cells. Interestingly, B. infantis MCC12 showed a remarkable anti-inflammatory effect. The MCC12 strain was more efficient to reduce the expression of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines (IL-16, IL-20, CX3CL1) when compared with B. breve MCC1274. These results provided valuable information for the deeper understanding of the antiviral immune response of intestinal epithelial cells as well as the host-paraimmunobiotic interaction in the bovine host.

Abstract
PURPOSE To quantify dopaminergic neurodegeneration and iron overload in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) to evaluate Parkinson's disease (PD) using both quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) and neuromelanin imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS We studied 39 PD patients (PD group) and 25 healthy controls (HC group) who underwent brain MRI with QSM and neuromelanin imaging. QSM and neuromelanin values of the SNpc were obtained using a voxel-based automated region segmentation system. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the SNpc in the neuromelanin images was calculated based on the mean value for the background region. The neuromelanin value was defined as the neuromelanin volume with an SNR higher than that of the background. The significance of the intergroup differences, and according to the severity stages in the PD group was tested for each QSM and neuromelanin value. Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) analysis for diagnosing PD was performed for QSM and neuromelanin values. RESULTS The QSM value was significantly higher in the PD group than in the HC group (P < 0.05). The neuromelanin value was significantly smaller in the PD group than in the HC group (P < 0.05). The areas under the ROC curve were 0.68 and 0.86 for QSM and neuromelanin values, respectively. Using QSM and neuromelanin imaging to classify the PD stage was difficult. CONCLUSIONS Quantifying the SNpc alterations with our region-based approach is useful for the diagnosis of PD.

Abstract
Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) is secreted from hypothalamic neurons (GnRH neurons) and stimulates anterior pituitary gonadotrophs to synthesize and secrete gonadotropins. In addition to gonadotrophs, GnRH neurons also express GnRH receptors, and the autocrine action of GnRH is reportedly involved in the regulation of functions of GnRH neurons. There is accumulating evidence that extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), one of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), is activated by GnRH and involved in various effects of GnRH in GnRH neurons. In the present study, we performed microarray analysis to examine the types of genes whose expression was regulated by GnRH in immortalized mouse GnRH neurons (GT1-7 cells). We found that 257 genes among 55,681 genes examined were up-regulated after 30-min treatment of GT1-7 cells with GnRH. These up-regulated genes included four dual-specificity MAPK phosphatases (DUSPs), DUSP1, DUSP2, DUSP5, and DUSP6. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis confirmed that the mRNA levels of DUSP5 and DUSP6 were robustly increased within 30 min. U0126, an inhibitor of ERK activation, completely inhibited the increases in the mRNA levels of DUSP5 and DUSP6. Immunoblotting analysis revealed that ERK activation peaked at 5 min and declined steeply at 60 min, whereas DUSP5 and DUSP6 proteins were increased from 60 min. It was notable that down-regulation of DUSP6 augmented GnRH-induced ERK activation approximately 1.7-fold at 60 min. These results suggested that the up-regulation of DUSP6 regulates the duration of ERK activation at least in part.

Abstract
SummaryPlatelet-type von Willebrand’s disease (vWD) is a bleeding disorder characterized by a heightened interaction between platelets and von Willebrand factor (vWF) as the result of an intrinsic platelet abnormality (probably in GPIb). Platelet aggregability was nearly normal in response to thrombin, wheat germ agglutinin and Ricinus communis agglutinin in this disorder. Unmodified platelets showed no aggregation upon the addition of peanut agglutinin. Partially purified human vWF induced little aggregation of washed patient platelets, but the aggregation was greatly enhanced in the presence of plasma devoid of vWF. Monoclonal antibodies directed against GPIb and GPIIb/IIIa as well as EDTA completely inhibited vWF-induced aggregation. These results indicate that human vWF induces aggregation of platelet-type vWD platelets in the presence of divalent cations and some plasma cofactor(s), and that both GPIb and GPIIb/IIIa are involved in this aggregation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although prestorage leucoreduction (LR) of blood components for transfusion has gained favour around the world, evidence of its beneficial clinical effects is ambiguous. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS To reveal whether leucocytes and/or platelets in transfused blood are related to transfusion-related adverse effects, a prospective randomized crossover study was performed on patients who donated autologous blood prior to elective surgery. Among 1487 primary enrolees, a total of 192 patients undergoing two-stage, bilateral total hip arthroplasty were randomized to receive autologous blood that was either prestorage leucoreduced, or not, for the first procedure. For the second procedure, each patient was crossed over to receive alternatively processed autologous blood. Length of hospital stay served as a primary end-point, with perioperative infectious/thrombotic complications, pre- and postoperative laboratory values, and body temperature serving as secondary endpoints. RESULTS No significant differences emerged between prestorage LR and non-LR cohorts in length of hospital stay, as well as perioperative infectious/thrombotic complications, postoperative body temperature and duration of fever. Postoperative laboratory values including white blood cell counts and C-reactive protein levels had no significant differences. CONCLUSION This study could not prove any superiority of prestorage LR over non-LR for autologous whole blood among patients who underwent total hip arthroplasty.

Abstract
Lophiostoma bipolare was taxonomically revised based on the morphological observations and phylogenetic analyses of molecular data from nuclear rDNA SSU-ITS-LSU, TUB, tef1, and rpb2 genes. Twenty-nine strains were morphologically similar to Lo. bipolare. A total of 174 sequences were generated from the Lo. bipolare complex. Phylogenetic analyses based on TUB sequence revealed 11 distinct species within the Lo. bipolare complex. Morphological features of the ascospores and the anatomical structure of the ascomata from both field collections as well as axenic culture, which have been reported previously as variable features at intraspecific levels, were compared to evaluate the taxonomic reliability of these features. To clarify the generic position of the 11 species, phylogenetic analyses were done on SSU-ITS-LSU-tef1-rpb2 gene sequences. The Lo. bipolare complex shared phylogenetic relationships with Pseudolophiostoma and Vaginatispora, and formed an additional five distinct clades from other members of Lophiostomataceae. According to its phylogenetic position, Lo. bipolare sensu stricto was distantly related to Lophiostoma s. str., and formed an independent clade within Lophiostomataceae. Lophiostoma bipolare s. str. could be distinguished from the other lophiostomataceous genera by the clypeus around the ostiolar neck and by the thin and uniformly thick peridium. A novel genus described as Lentistoma was established to accommodate this species, and the epitypification of Lentistoma bipolare (basionym: Massarina bipolaris) was proposed. Other lineages of the Lo. bipolare complex could not be separated on the basis of the ascospore size and sheath variations, but were distinguished based on ascomatal features, such as the existence of the clypeus, brown hyphae surrounding the peridium, and the contexture of the peridium, which were stable indicators of generic boundaries in Lophiostomataceae. Four additional new genera with five new species were recognised based on these morphological differences: Crassiclypeus (C. aquaticus), Flabellascoma (F. cycadicola and F. minimum), Leptoparies (Lep. palmarum), and Pseudopaucispora (Pseudop. brunneospora). Three new species were added to Pseudolophiostoma (Pseudol. cornisporum, Pseudol. obtusisporum, and Pseudol. tropicum) and two new species were added to Vaginatispora (V. amygdali and V. scabrispora). The re-evaluation of the validity of several previously recognised genera resulted in the introduction of two new genera with new combinations for Lophiostoma pseudoarmatisporum as Parapaucispora pseudoarmatispora and Vaginatispora fuckelii as Neovaginatispora fuckelii.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Machine perfusion (MP) techniques are expected to prove useful for preserving the organ viability and recovering organ function for organ transplantation. Furthermore, an accurate assessment of organ viability using MP is important for expanding the donor criteria. In this study, an ex vivo reperfusion model (ERM) simulating transplantation using diluted autologous blood under normothermic conditions was evaluated for its utility of MP under subnormothermic conditions for livers donated after cardiac death (DCD). METHODS The liver preservation methods for DCD porcine livers were evaluated using the ERM. This investigation was performed using a novel perfusion system developed by our research group. Porcine livers were procured with a warm ischemia time (WIT) of 60 minutes. The organs were then preserved using subnormothemic machine perfusion (SNMP) or static cold storage (CS) for 4 hours. We also compared these tissues with SNMP livers procured under a WIT of 0 minutes. After the preservation, the livers were reperfused for 2 hours using the ERM with diluted autologous blood oxygenated by a membrane oxygenator under NMP conditions. Reperfusion was evaluated based on perfusion flow dynamics and outflow of deviating enzymes. RESULTS In the early stages of reperfusion, pressure in the blood vessels increased sharply in the CS group. Furthermore, the amount of aspartate aminotransferase accumulation was lower in the SNMP group than in the other groups. These results suggest ischemia-reperfusion injury is suppressed in SNMP conditions. CONCLUSION An ERM has use in evaluating the utility of MP for the DCD liver.

Abstract
Background There is no standard first-line chemotherapy for recurrent/metastatic (RM) or unresectable locally advanced (LA) salivary gland carcinoma (SGC). Patients and methods We conducted a single institution, open-label, single arm, phase II trial of combined androgen blockade (CAB) for androgen receptor (AR)-positive SGC. Leuprorelin acetate was administered subcutaneously at a dose of 3.75 mg every 4 weeks. Bicalutamide was administered orally at a daily dose of 80 mg. Patients were treated until progressive disease or unacceptable toxicities. Results Thirty-six eligible patients were enrolled. Thirty-three patients had RM disease and three patients had LA disease. The pathological diagnoses were salivary duct carcinoma (34 patients, 94%) and adenocarcinoma, NOS (two patients, 6%). The best overall response rate was 41.7% [n = 15, 95% confidence interval (CI), 25.5%-59.2%], the clinical benefit rate was 75.0% (n = 27, 95% CI, 57.8%-87.9%). The median progression-free survival was 8.8 months (95% CI, 6.3-12.3 months) and the median overall survival was 30.5 months (95% CI, 16.8 months to not reached). Additional analyses between treatment outcomes and clinicopathological factors or biomarkers including AR positivity, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 status, and its complex downstream signaling pathway gene mutations showed no statistically significant differences. Elevated grade 3 liver transaminases and increased serum creatinine were reported in two patients, respectively. Discontinuation of leuprorelin acetate or bicalutamide due to adverse event occurred in one patient. Conclusion This study suggests that CAB has equivalent efficacy and less toxicity for patients with AR-positive RM or unresectable LA SGC compared with conventional chemotherapy, which warrants further study. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Subnormothermic machine perfusion (SNMP) shows some advantages for the preservation of grafts donated after cardiac death (DCD) and improvements in machine perfusion (MP) technology are important to enhance organ preservation outcomes for liver transplantation. In this study, we focused on purified subnormothermic machine perfusion (PSNMP) and volumes of perfusate removed to substitute for purification and replaced by modified University of Wisconsin-gluconate after the start of perfusion and investigated, in particular, the optimum perfusate purification volume. Several purification volumes under SNMP were compared. In addition, the perfusate purification during MP was indicated as a potential technique to enhance the organ quality of DCD grafts and extended-criteria donors. METHODS The PSNMP at several volumes (0.5 L, 1.5 L, and 3 L) were compared with regular SNMP without any purification treatment (untreated control). In the PSNMP group, all perfusate was removed to substitute for purification of the perfusate by modified University of Wisconsin-gluconate solution after the start of perfusion. After removing the perfusate, new perfusate with the same components was perfused to preserve the porcine livers obtained under warm ischemia for 60 minutes using SNMP at 22°C porcine liver for 4 hours. RESULTS The concentrations of aspartate aminotransferase and lactate dehydrogenase in the untreated group were significantly higher during perfusion compared to those of the intervention group. There are no significant differences among the volume conditions of the purification groups. CONCLUSIONS The optimal volume of perfusate purification was confirmed with a simple experimental comparison between untreated and PSNMP conditions.

Abstract
Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common type of oral cancer worldwide and in the United States. OSCC remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with head and neck cancers. Tobacco and alcohol consumption alone or with chewing betel nut are potential risk factors contributing to the high prevalence of OSCC. Multimodality therapies, including surgery, chemotherapy, biologic therapy, and radiotherapy, particularly intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), are the current treatments for OSCC patients. Despite recent advances in these treatment modalities, the overall survival remains poor over the past years. Recent data from whole-exome sequencing reveal that TP53 is commonly mutated in human papillomavirus-negative OSCC patients. Furthermore, these data stressed the importance of the TP53 gene in suppressing the development and progression of OSCC. Clinically, TP53 mutations are largely associated with poor survival and tumor resistance to radiotherapy and chemotherapy in OSCC patients, which makes the TP53 mutation status a potentially useful molecular marker prognostic and predictive of clinical response in these patients. Several forms of DNA damage have been shown to activate p53, including those generated by ionizing radiation and chemotherapy. The DNA damage stabilizes p53 in part via the DNA damage signaling pathway that involves sensor kinases, including ATM and ATR and effector kinases, such as Chk1/2 and Wee1, which leads to posttranscriptional regulation of a variety of genes involved in DNA repair, cell cycle control, apoptosis, and senescence. Here, we discuss the link of TP53 mutations with treatment outcome and survival in OSCC patients. We also provide evidence that small-molecule inhibitors of critical proteins that regulate DNA damage repair and replication stress during the cell cycle progression, as well as other molecules that restore wild-type p53 activity to mutant p53, can be exploited as novel therapeutic approaches for the treatment of OSCC patients bearing p53 mutant tumors.

Abstract
ZusammenfassungBei 14 Patienten mit Parkinson-Plus-Syndromen (PPLUS) wurden PET-Unter- suchungen mittels L-18F-DOPA unter Verwendung einer arteriellen Inputfunktion durchgeführt. Aufgrund von Modellannahmen konnte für den radioaktiven Tracer die Influxkonstante Ki in Abhängigkeit von Korrekturen der unspezifischen Aktivität im Kortex oder Zerebellum bestimmt werden. Die Ergebnisse wurden mit denen von 20 gesunden Kontrollen verglichen und im Hinblick auf die Intra- und Interuntersucher-Variabilität ausgewertet. Bei Patienten mit Parkinson-Plus-Syndromen war in allen Fällen die Influxkonstante Ki erniedrigt. Ihr Mittelwert betrug 0,154 (ml/Striatum/min) bei PPLUS gegenüber 0,690 (ml/ Striatum/min) bei Gesunden. Der Korrelationskoeffizient war für die Intraunter- sucher-Variabilität r = 0,973 und die Interuntersucher-Variabilität r = 0,879 bei Gesunden bzw. 0,989 und 0,973 bei PPLUS nach Korrektur der unspezifischen Aktivität über eine kortikale Region. Weder bei Gesunden noch bei PPLUS waren nach Korrektur der unspezifischen Aktivität über eine zerebellare Region Unterschiede der gemessenen Werte für Ki nachweisbar (p = 0,1). PET- Untersuchungen mittels L-18F-DOPA können das Ausmaß der nigrostriatalen Degeneration in vivo sicher erfassen. Aufgrund der irreversiblen Bindung von L-18F-DOPA innerhalb des Striatums läßt sich durch PET eine untersucherunabhängige Quantifizierung der gestörten präsynaptischen dopaminergen Funktion vornehmen.
