Abstract
Treatment of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial infections increasingly relies on last-line antibiotics, such as polymyxins, with the urgent need for discovery of new antimicrobials. Nanotechnology-based antimicrobials have gained significant importance to prevent the catastrophic emergence of MDR over the past decade. In this study, phytantriol-based nanoparticles, named cubosomes, were prepared and examined in vitro by minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and time-kill assays against Gram-negative bacteria: Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Phytantriol-based cubosomes were highly bactericidal against polymyxin-resistant, lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-deficient A. baumannii strains. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) was employed to understand the structural changes in biomimetic membranes that replicate the composition of these LPS-deficient strains upon treatment with cubosomes. Additionally, to further understand the membrane-cubosome interface, neutron reflectivity (NR) was used to investigate the interaction of cubosomes with model bacterial membranes on a solid support. These results reveal that cubosomes might be a new strategy for combating LPS-deficient Gram-negative pathogens.

Abstract
The current study used acid hydrolysis of lignocellulosic materials to obtain fermentable sugar for bioethanol production. However, toxic compounds that inhibit fermentation are also produced during the process, which reduces the bioethanol productivity. In this study, atmospheric cold plasma (ACP) was adopted to degrade the toxic compounds within sulfuric acid-hydrolyzed sugarcane bagasse. After ACP treatment, significant decreases in toxic compounds (31% of the formic acid, 45% of the acetic acid, 80% of the hydroxymethylfurfural, and 100% of the furfural) were observed. The toxicity of the hydrolysate was low enough for bioethanol production using Kluyveromyces marxianus. After adopting optimal ACP conditions (200 W power for 25 min), the bioethanol productivity improved from 0.25 to 0.65 g/L/h, which means that ACP could effectively degrade toxic compounds within the hydrolysate, thereby enhancing bioethanol production. Various nitrogen substitute was coordinated with detoxified hydrolysate, and chicken meal group presented the highest bioethanol productivity (0.45 g/L/h).

Abstract
Solution-processed semiconductors have opened promising avenues for next-generation semiconductor and optoelectronic industries. Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) as one of the most typical materials are widely utilized for the design and development of light-emitting diodes, photodetectors, and solar cells. Recently, an emerging process of PbS QD ink has been employed to attain world record power conversion efficiency by surface passivation using a PbI2 ligand to form PbI2-PbS and the process optimization in the field of photovoltaics. However, the bonding and debonding of the ligands on the surface of PbS QDs are dynamic reversible processes in an ink environment. The uncoordinated Pb2+ defects induced by unbonded PbS QDs serve as the recombination sites. Thus, the present ink process leaves much room for the enhancement by surface passivation of PbS QDs. Herein, we devise an efficient strategy with a supplementary phenethylammonium iodide (PEAI) ligand for the formation of the PEAI-PbS interface in PbS QD ink-processed solar cells. This newly developed method can not only improve the passivation on the QD surface by iodine ions but also simultaneously enhance the carrier collection efficiency by a graded energy alignment between PbI2-PbS and PEAI-PbS layers. The corresponding power conversion efficiency of the optimized device has significantly increased by approximately 20% more than the control device. As a result, such a robust and efficient method regarded as a strategic candidate can overcome the bottleneck of imperfect passivation caused by a large specific surface area and loose bonding ligands, eventually promoting the industrial application of QDs.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to simultaneously evaluate anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory activities of the hop extracts by different solvents. Hop water extract (HWE) and hop ethanol extracts (HEEs) were prepared by extracting hop pellets with hot water at 90 °C and ethanol solutions (55%, 75%, and 95%), respectively. Bioactive compound such as α-acid, β-acid, total phenolic, and total flavonoid contents were determined. All the HEEs showed higher anti-oxidative activities than the HWEs. The HEEs showing the highest anti-oxidative activities are different in the experiments with different free radicals. For anti-inflammatory activities, both the HWE and HEEs decreased NO productions. HWE decreased TNF-α and IL-6 secretion but showed no effect on IL-1β, while HEEs decreased IL-1β and IL-6 secretion but increased TNF-α secretion. Except for TNF-α secretion, the HEEs showed higher anti-inflammatory activities than the HWE. Future work is to explore the possible mechanism to improve the ethanol extraction procedure.

Abstract
Excessive utilization of fossil fuels has resulted in serious concerns about climate change. Integrating biorefinery technology to convert waste-derived-lignocellulosic biomass into biofuels and biopolymers has become an emerging topic toward our sustainable future. Pretreatment to fractionate the building block chemicals from the biomass is a crucial unit operation to ease the downstream processes in biorefinery. However, application of solvents and chemicals in the process can create many operational and environmental challenges in sensitive areas like highly populated cities. To shed light on how to determine a green biorefinery, this study presents the sustainability metrics of various pretreatment techniques and their operational risks during urbanization. The proposed green indexes include fractionation outputs, chemical recyclability, operational profile, and safety factors. In line with the design principles of lignin valorization, the issue of urban biomass and water-and-energy nexus are addressed to support future development and application of urban biorefinery for municipal waste management.

Abstract
Hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskites (HOIPs) have recently attracted tremendous attention because of their excellent semiconducting and optoelectronic properties, which exist despite their morphology and crystallinity being far inferior to those of more mature semiconductors, such as silicon and III-V compound semiconductors. Heteroepitaxy can provide a route to achieving high-performance HOIP devices when high crystalline quality and smooth morphology are required, but work on heteroepitaxial HOIPs has not previously been reported. Here, we demonstrate epitaxial growth of methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) on single crystal KCl substrates with smooth morphology and the highest carrier recombination lifetime (∼213 ns) yet reported for nonsingle crystalline MAPbI3. Experimental Raman spectra agree well with theoretical calculations, presenting in particular a sharp peak at 290 cm-1 for the torsional mode of the organic cations, a marker of orientational order and typically lacking in previous reports. Photodetectors were fabricated showing excellent performance, confirming the high quality of the epitaxial MAPbI3 thin films. This work provides a new strategy to enhance the performance of all HOIPs-based devices.

Abstract
Silicon-based photoelectrodes for solar fuel production have attracted great interest over the past decade, with the major challenge being silicon's vulnerability to corrosion. A metal-insulator-semiconductor architecture, in which an insulator film serves as a protection layer, can prevent corrosion but must also allow low-resistance carrier transport, generally leading to a trade-off between stability and efficiency. In this work, we propose and demonstrate a general method to decouple the two roles of the insulator by employing localized dielectric breakdown. This approach allows the insulator to be thick, which enhances stability, while enabling low-resistance carrier transport as required for efficiency. This method can be applied to various oxides, such as SiO2 and Al2O3. In addition, it is suitable for silicon, III-V compounds, and other optical absorbers for both photocathodes and photoanodes. Finally, the thick metal-oxide layer can serve as a thin-film antireflection coating, which increases light absorption efficiency.

Abstract
Arterial blood pressure (ABP) is an important indicator of cardiovascular circulation and presents various intrinsic regulations. It has been found that the intrinsic characteristics of blood vessels can be assessed quantitatively by ABP analysis (called reflection wave analysis (RWA)), but conventional RWA is insufficient for assessment during non-stationary conditions, such as the Valsalva maneuver. Recently, a novel adaptive method called empirical mode decomposition (EMD) was proposed for non-stationary data analysis. This study proposed a RWA algorithm based on EMD (EMD-RWA). A total of 51 subjects participated in this study, including 39 healthy subjects and 12 patients with autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction. The results showed that EMD-RWA provided a reliable estimation of reflection time in baseline and head-up tilt (HUT). Moreover, the estimated reflection time is able to assess the ANS function non-invasively, both in normal, healthy subjects and in the patients with ANS dysfunction. EMD-RWA provides a new approach for reflection time estimation in non-stationary conditions, and also helps with non-invasive ANS assessment.

Abstract
Objectives The objective of this study was to compare the elution characteristics,
antimicrobial activity and mechanical properties of antibiotic-loaded
bone cement (ALBC) loaded with powdered antibiotic, powdered antibiotic
with inert filler (xylitol), or liquid antibiotic, particularly focusing
on vancomycin and amphotericin B. Methods Cement specimens loaded with 2 g of vancomycin or amphotericin
B powder (powder group), 2 g of antibiotic powder and 2 g of xylitol
(xylitol group) or 12 ml of antibiotic solution containing 2 g of
antibiotic (liquid group) were tested. Results Vancomycin elution was enhanced by 234% in the liquid group and
by 12% in the xylitol group compared with the powder group. Amphotericin
B elution was enhanced by 265% in the liquid group and by 65% in
the xylitol group compared with the powder group. Based on the disk-diffusion
assay, the eluate samples of vancomycin-loaded ALBC of the liquid group
exhibited a significantly larger inhibitory zone than samples of
the powder or the xylitol group. Regarding the ALBCs loaded with
amphotericin B, only the eluate samples of the liquid group exhibited
a clear inhibitory zone, which was not observed in either the xylitol
or the powder groups. The ultimate compressive strength was significantly
reduced in specimens containing liquid antibiotics. Conclusions Adding vancomycin or amphotericin B antibiotic powder in distilled
water before mixing with bone cement can significantly improve the
efficiency of antibiotic release than can loading ALBC with the
same dose of antibiotic powder. This simple and effective method for
preparation of ALBCs can significantly improve the efficiency of

Abstract
We report on quadrupolar (donor)2-acceptor sensitizers for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The acceptor units are based on dithieno[2,3-a:3',2'-c]phenazine and dithieno[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine coupled to thiophene donors. The optoelectronic and photophysical properties of two sets of isomers reveal a rigid structure for linear isomers and an efficient nonradiative decay for branched isomers. These sensitizers were integrated into DSSCs, and the quadrupolar structure is an operational design, as the IPCE reached up to 38% from 400 nm to 600 nm. The lengthening of the donor chain increases the efficiency, demonstrating the appeal of these oligomeric dyes for DSSCs.

Abstract
The effect of ZnO defects on photoexcited charge carrier recombination and forward induced charge transfer was studied in organic-inorganic bilayer organic heterojunction solar cells. Decreased bimolecular recombination via passivation of ZnO nanopariticle defects resulted in longer carrier lifetime as determined by transient photovoltage (TPV) measurements. It was also found by time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) measurements that defect passivation decreased the fluorescence lifetime which indicated higher exciton dissociation efficiency. Through passivation of the ZnO nanoparticles defects, the two loss mechanisms were reduced and the power conversion efficiency (PCE) is significantly enhanced.

Abstract
As has been shown by a number of working groups, primary fibromyalgia syndrome does not represent a single clinical entity. It is possible to distinguish between a subgroup with high pain sensitivity and no associated psychiatric condition, a second subgroup characterized by depression and concomitant pain symptoms associated with fibromyalgia syndrome, and a third group with somatoform pain disorder of the fibromyalgia type. Bland inflammatory processes must be considered as the cause in the first group, while depression is the underlying reason for the development of pain in the second group. In the third group, serious previous or still existing psychological problems or also insufficient coping with illness symptoms must be regarded as the reason for pain chronification. Group 1 benefits from a blocking of the 5-HT3 receptors by means of tropisetron, for example. This not only affects pain chronification but also the inflammatory process itself. Group 2 needs antidepressant treatment, whereas the focus should be on psychotherapy is group 3. Groups 1 and 2 will also profit from multimodal physical treatment programs; to a certain extent this applies to group 3 as well. So-called mixed types require a combination of therapeutic measures.

Abstract
The relationship between endothelial dysfunction and stroke subtypes is unclear. We prospectively measured brachial flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD) in 143 patients with acute ischemic stroke and 40 controls. The overall stroke patients had impaired FMD, but only lacunar infarction had significantly impaired FMD vs the controls. Impaired FMD was an independent predictor for lacunar infarction. Ischemic stroke is associated with endothelial dysfunction, which is more conspicuous in lacunar infarction.

Abstract
The formation of heterocyclic amines (HAs) in the fumes from frying French fries in soybean oil or lard was studied. A high-pressure liquid chromatography method was used to determine the various HAs in fumes. Results showed that the yields of fumes produced from soybean oil when heated alone for 2 or 4 h were higher than from lard; however, a reversed trend was found when frying French fries in soybean oil and lard. Most fumes from soybean oil and lard while frying French fries were adsorbed onto the condensation apparatus, while the other portions were adsorbed onto the wool and glass beads, which were incorporated in our experimental design for collecting the fumes. The fumes from soybean oil when heated alone were found to contain three HAs, namely, 2-amino-3-methylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoxaline (IQx), 2-amino-3-methylimidazo[4,5-f ]quinoline (IQ), and 1-methyl-9H-pyrido[4,3-b ]indole (Harman), whereas two more HAs, 2-amino-3,4-dimethylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoline (MeIQ) and 3-amino-1,4-dimethyl-5H-pyrido[4,3-b ]indole (Trp-P-1), were generated in lard. Lard was more susceptible to the formation of HAs than soybean oil when both were heated alone. No HAs were detected in the fumes from French fries fried in soybean oil and lard.

Abstract
A new family of aryl-pi-donor-aryl molecules has been synthesized and studied with respect to their photophysical properties and electrogenerated chemiluminscence (ECL) for the first time. Anthracene, phenanthrene, naphthalene, biphenyl, and fluorene were coupled with N,N-dimethylanilino moiety via a C-C triple bond (1-7). Introduction of such a strong electron-donating moiety as N,N-dimethylanilino group through a triple bond imparts new properties to the resultant molecules that are not commonly observed for the parent arenes. All molecules show absorption in the near-visible region and emission totally in the visible region with high fluorescence quantum yields. Bright solid-state photoluminescence has also been noticed for all the compounds in the visible region. 9-Anthryl- and 1-naphthyl- derivatives exhibited blue-shifted electrochemiluminescence (ECL) relative to their photoluminescence because of aggregation. 9-Phenanthryl- and 2-naphthyl- derivatives did not show ECL. 2-Biphenyl derivative showed monomeric ECL while 4-biphenyl counterpart exhibited excimer ECL. No ECL was observed for 2-fluorenyl derivative. The observed electronic properties are discussed with regard to the structure of the molecules. The characteristics of the molecules chosen in the present study open up new prospects and promises for novel tunable organic materials, on the basis of simple extension of conjugation to promote intramolecular communication, for ECL, OLED, and other optoelectronic applications.

Abstract
Two series of donor-bearing phenylethynylcoumarins have been synthesized, and their photophysical properties have been evaluated. Chemiluminescence was observed through the annihilation of their electrogenerated radical ions and was found to be only slightly affected by the presence of various donor groups on the phenyl moiety linked through the C-C triple bond. The overall properties of the two series of compounds are discussed with respect to their structures. The observed electronic absorption properties are explained with the help of computational studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is hyperendemic in Taiwan. Before universal HBV immunization was started in Taiwan in 1984, the carrier rate for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) was 15% to 20% in the general population. OBJECTIVE To quantify the population impact of a mass vaccination program for HBV 15 years after its implementation. DESIGN Descriptive analysis of serologic markers of HBV in healthy children and adolescents. SETTING Chung-Cheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan, in 1999. PARTICIPANTS 1357 persons younger than 15 years of age, who were born after the implementation of universal HBV vaccination, and 559 persons 15 to 20 years of age, who were born before the program began. MEASUREMENTS Repeated serologic surveys similar to those done before and 5 and 10 years after the national vaccination program was implemented. All participants were tested for serum HBsAg, its antibody (anti-HBs), and hepatitis B core antibody (anti-HBc). RESULTS During the 15 years since the vaccination program was implemented, the prevalence of HBsAg among persons younger than 15 years of age decreased from 9.8% in 1984 to 0.7% in 1999; among persons 15 to 20 years of age, the 1999 prevalence of HBsAg was 7% (P < 0.001). Hepatitis B core antibody seropositivity, which represents HBV infection, was found in 2.9% of persons younger than 15 years of age and in 20.6% of persons 15 to 20 years of age (P < 0.001); in the same age groups, the rate of anti-HBs seropositivity was 75.8% and 70.7%, respectively (P = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS Universal vaccination significantly decreased the HBV carrier rate and infection rate among children and adolescents born since the program began. By decreasing the carrier pool, continuation of the national HBV immunization program should prevent HBV infection in the children of Taiwan, and, subsequently, adults as well.

Abstract
Rat pups age of 14 postnatal day (P14) were subjected to lithium-pilocarpine (Li-PC) model of status epilepticus (SE). Control rats (n=6) were given an equivalent volume of saline intraperitoneally. Behavioral testing began on P60 including the Morris water maze, the radial arm maze, and the rotarod test. Brain were then analyzed with cresyl violet stain for histological lesions and evaluated for mossy fiber sprouting with the Timm stain. We observed spatial memory deficits both in the Morris water maze and radial arm maze in Li-PC-treated rat. There was no motor impairment in Li-PC-treated rat by the rotarod test. Two of six Li-PC-treated rats showed cell loss in hippocampal CA1 subfield. The Timm staining pattern was similar in both control and Li-PC-treated rats. Result of this study suggests that Li-PC-induced SE in immature rats cause long-term cognitive deficit and permanent cell loss in hippocampal CA1, but spare motor impairment.

Abstract
Murine extrahepatic bile duct epithelial cells (MEBEC) were isolated from extrahepatic bile ducts of BALB/c mice and established in primary culture. The epithelial origin was confirmed by positive cytokeratin 19 staining for these cells and the presence of microvilli and tight junctions under electron microscopy. By immunofluorescent staining with monoclonal antibodies and flow-cytometric analysis, MEBEC in culture constitutively express low levels of intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1, class I and class II major histocompatibility (MHC) antigens. The expression of ICAM-1 was significantly increased by interferon gamma (INF-gamma) or tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) stimulation. Class I and class II antigen expression were significantly enhanced by INF-gamma and in vitro murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) infection. MEBEC infected with MCMV revealed a progressive cytopathic effect. MEBEC activated by INF-gamma or infected by MCMV induced a low but significant proliferation of allogeneic T cells and displayed a significant decrease in the absorbance at O.D. 550 nm in a microtitre tetrazolium assay after these treated cells were co-cultured with allogeneic T cells. These results suggest that following the up-regulation of surface MHC antigen and adhesion molecule expression with cytokines or MCMV, the MEBEC can function as antigen-presenting cells and initiate T-cell proliferation, which in turn trigger the recognition of MEBEC by effector T-cell-mediated cytotoxic responses. These findings may be implicated in the pathogenesis of virally induced, immune-mediated extrahepatic bile duct damage disorders.
