Abstract
To estimate the genetic susceptibility for childhood lymphoma, we conducted an association study for 23 cases and 148 controls. Total 1536 tag single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were selected in 138 candidate gene regions related to immune responses, apoptosis, the cell cycle, and DNA repair. Twelve SNPs were significantly associated with the risk of lymphoma (P(trend)<0.05) in six genes (IL1RN, IL2, IL12RB1, JAK3, TNFRSF13B, and XRCC3). The most significant association was seen for IL2 variant rs2069762 (OR(TG+GG) vs. TT=3.43 (1.29-9.11), P(trend)=0.002, minP=0.005). These findings suggest that common genetic variants in IL2 might play a role in the pathogenesis of childhood lymphoma.

Abstract
Since the first umbilical cord blood transplantation (CBT) in 1998, cord blood (CB) has now become one of the most commonly used sources of hematopoietic stem cells for transplantation. CBT has advantages of easy procurement, no risk to donor, low risk of transmitting infections, immediate availability and immune tolerance allowing successful transplantation despite human leukocyte antigen disparity. Several studies have shown that the number of cells transplanted is the most important factor for engraftment in CBT, and it limits the wide use of CB in adult patients. New strategies for facilitating engraftment and reducing transplantation-related mortality are ongoing in the field of CBT and include the use of a reduced-intensity conditioning regimen, double-unit CBT, ex vivo expansion of CB, and co-transplantation of CB and mesenchymal stem cells. Recently, the results of two international studies with large sample sizes showed that CB is an acceptable alternative source of hematopoietic stem cells for adult recipients who lack human leukocyte antigen-matched adult donors. Along with the intensive researches, development in banking process of CB will amplify the use of CB and offer the chance for cure in more patients.

Abstract
Chronic graft versus host disease (GVHD) is a frequent complication after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), but simultaneous small bowel obstruction is rare. Here, we report a child with acute myeloid leukemia who received an allogeneic HSCT from an unrelated matched donor. After HSCT, the patient developed severe chronic GVHD involving the small intestine, leading to obstruction of the terminal ileum. Small bowel resection was performed, and the symptoms improved without severe complications. Bowel obstruction should be considered as a possible complication of chronic GVHD; surgery may be a valuable corrective measure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Busulfan is a key compound in myeloablative chemotherapy before hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation in children. Genetic polymorphisms of glutathione S-transferase (GST), which is involved in the metabolism of busulfan, have been implicated in interindividual variability in busulfan pharmacokinetics. Development of a rapid and simplified method for polygenic analysis of GST may facilitate large pharmacogenetic studies and clinical application of individualized busulfan dose adjustment. We previously introduced an effective PCR method for analyzing multiple genes using a small amount of DNA, termed 'TotalPlex amplification'. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to extend the application of the TotalPlex method to the specific GST gene families (A1, P1, M1, and T1) that are related to busulfan metabolism, and thereby facilitate pharmacogenetic analysis of GST polymorphisms. METHODS Seven genetic polymorphisms (GSTA1 promoter -52G>A, -69C>T, -567T>G, and -631T>G; GSTP1 313A>G; GSTM1 deletion; and GSTT1 deletion) were analyzed by multiplex PCR and genotyping, and the genotyping results from TotalPlex were verified with those from uniplex PCR. RESULTS Using five pairs of specific bulging-specific primers, seven specific gene fragments were successfully amplified by multiplex amplification coupled to a multiplexed bead array detection system, with a smaller amount of DNA and a shorter process time than is needed for the conventional approach. The genotypes of seven loci from 30 different genomic DNA samples derived using the multiplex system were consistent with the results of standard genotyping methods. CONCLUSION Our multiplex system provides a fast, inexpensive, and accurate method of detecting multiple GST polymorphisms (GSTA1, GSTP1, GSTM1, and GSTT1).

Abstract
Abstract
Current evidence suggests that apoptosis and the cell cycle system play an important role in cancer development. To identify susceptible genetic markers in these mechanisms, we did an association study in 63 patients and 148 controls. A total of 304 SNPs in 31 gene regions were selected. We evaluated an association at a gene region level by computing the minimum p-value (minP) and doing the false discovery rate (FDR) test. Both SNP and gene-based analyses presented associations with the risk of childhood leukemia for 5 genes: CASP7, CASP14, CASP8AP2, MYC, and RIPK1 (Ptrend < 0.05). There were statistically significant associations for CASP7 (rs12416109 and rs3814231, Ptrend = 0.002 and 0.009, respectively, minP = 0.013, FDR = 0.042) and CASP14 (rs8110862, Ptrend < 0.001, minP = 0.002, FDR = 0.027). This study suggests that genetic polymorphisms in apoptosis and cell cycle related genes might play a role in childhood leukemia development.

Abstract
Peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) mobilization, which uses plerixafor (AMD 3100), a newly developed specific inhibitor of the CXCR4 receptor, in combination with granulocyte-colony stimulating factor(G-CSF), has been shown to enhance the stem cell mobilization in adult patients, but pediatric data are scarce. We documented our experience with this drug in 6 Korean pediatric patients who had failed in chemomobilization, using G-CSF, alone. All patients were mobilized CD34+ cells (median, 11.08 × 106/kg: range, 6.34-28.97 × 106/kg) successfully within 2 to 3 cycles of apheresis, without complications. A total of 7 autologous transplantations were performed, including 1 tandem transplantation. However, 2 patients with brain tumors showed severe pulmonary complications, including spontaneous pneumomediastinum. This is the first study of PBSC mobilization with plerixafor in Asian pediatric patients. Furthermore our study suggests that mobilization with plerixafor may be effective in Korean pediatric patients, who have previously been heavily treated and have failed PBSC mobilization with classical chemomobilization, using G-CSF. However, further studies are needed to examine the possible complications of autologous transplantation, using a mobilized plerixafor product in children.

Abstract
It has been reported that human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) can transfer mitochondria to the cells with severely compromised mitochondrial function. We tested whether the reported intercellular mitochondrial transfer could be replicated in different types of cells or under different experimental conditions, and tried to elucidate possible mechanism. Using biochemical selection methods, we found exponentially growing cells in restrictive media (uridine− and bromodeoxyuridine [BrdU]+) during the coculture of MSCs (uridine-independent and BrdU-sensitive) and 143B-derived cells with severe mitochondrial dysfunction induced by either long-term ethidium bromide treatment or short-term rhodamine 6G (R6G) treatment (uridine-dependent but BrdU-resistant). The exponentially growing cells had nuclear DNA fingerprint patterns identical to 143B, and a sequence of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) identical to the MSCs. Since R6G causes rapid and irreversible damage to mitochondria without the removal of mtDNA, the mitochondrial function appears to be restored through a direct transfer of mitochondria rather than mtDNA alone. Conditioned media, which were prepared by treating mtDNA-less 143B ρ0 cells under uridine-free condition, induced increased chemotaxis in MSC, which was also supported by transcriptome analysis. Cytochalasin B, an inhibitor of chemotaxis and cytoskeletal assembly, blocked mitochondrial transfer phenomenon in the above condition. However, we could not find any evidence of mitochondrial transfer to the cells harboring human pathogenic mtDNA mutations (A3243G mutation or 4,977 bp deletion). Thus, the mitochondrial transfer is limited to the condition of a near total absence of mitochondrial function. Elucidation of the mechanism of mitochondrial transfer will help us create a potential cell therapy-based mitochondrial restoration or mitochondrial gene therapy for human diseases caused by mitochondrial dysfunction.

Abstract
Background: Currently, serum biomarkers, which are sufficiently sensitive and specific for early detection and risk classification of gastric adenocarcinoma do not exist. Therefore, this study identified a panel of serum biomarkers for the diagnosis of gastric adenocarcinoma. Methods: A 29-plex array platform with 29 biomarkers, consisting of 11 proteins discovered through proteomics and 18 previously known to be cancer-associated, was constructed. A test/training set consisting of 120 gastric adenocarcinoma and 120 control samples were examined. After 13 proteins were selected as candidate biomarkers, multivariate classification analyses were used to identify algorithms for diagnostic biomarker combinations. These algorithms were independently validated using a set of 95 gastric adenocarcinoma and 51 control samples. Results: Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), pro-apolipoprotein A1 (proApoA1), apolipoprotein A1, transthyretin (TTR), regulated upon activation, normally T-expressed and presumably secreted (RANTES), D-dimer, vitronectin (VN), interleukin-6, α-2 macroglobulin, C-reactive protein and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 were selected as classifiers in the two algorithms. These algorithms differentiated between the majority of gastric adenocarcinoma and control serum samples in the training/test set with high accuracy (>88%). These algorithms also accurately classified in the validation set (>85%). Conclusion: Two panels of combinatorial biomarkers, including EGFR, TTR, RANTES, and VN, are developed, which are less invasive method for the diagnosis of gastric adenocarcinoma. They could supplement clinical gastroscopic evaluation of symptomatic patients to enhance diagnostic accuracy.

Abstract
Despite active and aggressive therapeutic measures, atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumors (AT/RTs) are without doubt one of the most malignant brain tumors that occur during childhood. These tumors are more prevalent in children less than 3 years of age, and the prognosis is worse in these young children. Medical records of 14 patients diagnosed at our institution were reviewed. Patients diagnosed with AT/RT at our institution between 1997 and 2009 were identified. Clinical data for those patients with pathologic confirmation of AT/RTs were reviewed regarding surgery, adjuvant treatment, and survival. A total of 14 patients were identified. One patient who died 3 days after initial surgery was excluded, and 13 patients were recruited. Of the 13 patients, 7 were less than 1 year of age, and only 2 were over 3 years of age. Nine patients showed dissemination at diagnosis. Four patients were treated with radiation therapy (RTx), and 2 of these were less than 3 years of age. Ten patients had chemotherapy (CTx), and 3 of these underwent high dose chemotherapy and autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation. The median progression-free survival (PFS) was 4 months, and the median overall survival (OS) was 9 months. Univariable analysis revealed age more than 1 year, CTx, and RTx to be significant factors for better PFS and OS. None of the variables were significant in multivariable analysis. Young patients with AT/RT have a bad prognosis. An aggressive therapeutic strategy needs to be profiled for this age group.

Abstract
X-linked chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is an inherited immunodeficiency caused by a defect in the gp91(phox) gene. In an effort to treat X-CGD, we investigated the safety and efficacy of gene therapy using a retroviral vector, MT-gp91. Two X-CGD patients received autologous CD34(+) cells transduced with MT-gp91 after a conditioning regimen consisting of fludarabine and busulfan. The level of gene-marked cells was highest at day 21 (8.3 and 11.7% in peripheral blood cells) but decreased to 0.08 and 0.5%, respectively, 3 years after gene transfer. The level of functionally corrected cells, as determined by nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase assay, reached a peak at day 17 (6.5% patient 1 (P1) and 14.3% patient 2 (P2) of total granulocytes) and declined to 0.05% (P1) and 0.21% (P2), 3 years later. Some retroviral vectors were found to have integrated within or close to the proto-oncogenes MDS1-EVI1, PRDM16, and CCND2; however, no abnormal cell expansion or related hematological malignancy was observed. Overall, the gene transfer procedure did not produce any serious adverse effects and was able to convert a significant fraction of blood cells to biologically functional cells, albeit for a short period of time.

Abstract
Pediatric infratentorial ependymomas are difficult to cure. Despite the availability of advanced therapeutic modalities for brain tumors, total surgical resection remains the most important prognostic factor. Recently, histological grade emerged as an independent prognostic factor for intracranial ependymoma. We retrospectively reviewed the treatment outcome of 33 pediatric patients with infratentorial ependymoma. Progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) rates were calculated and relevant prognostic factors were analyzed. Fourteen patients (42%) were under the age of 3 at diagnosis. Gross total resection was achieved in 16 patients (49%). Anaplastic histology was found in 13 patients (39%). Adjuvant therapies were delayed until progression in 12 patients (36%). Actuarial PFS rates were 64% in the first year and 29% in the fifth year. Actuarial OS rates were 91% in the first year and 71% in the fifth year. On univariate analysis, brainstem invasion (P = 0.047), anaplastic histology (P = 0.004), higher mitotic count (P = 0.001), and higher Ki-67 index (P = 0.004) were significantly related to a shorter PFS. Gross total resection (P = 0.029) and a greater age at diagnosis (P = 0.033) were significantly related to a longer PFS. On multivariate analysis, anaplastic histology alone was significantly related to a shorter PFS (P = 0.023). Gross total resection (P = 0.039) was significantly related to a longer overall survival (OS) on multivariate analysis. Anaplastic histology and gross total resection were the most important clinical factors affecting PFS and OS, respectively. Anaplastic histology, mitotic count, and Ki-67 index can be used as universal and easily available prognostic parameters in infratentorial ependymomas.

Abstract
PURPOSE We compared visual and refractive outcomes after implantation of Visian toric implantable collamer lenses (toric ICLs) and iris-fixated toric pIOLs (toric Artisans). PATIENTS AND METHODS A comparative retrospective analysis was performed. Toric ICLs were implanted into 30 eyes of 18 patients, and toric Artisans into 31 eyes of 22 recipients. We measured the logarithms of the minimum angle of resolution of uncorrected visual acuity (logMAR UCVA), logMAR of best spectacle-corrected corrected VA (logMAR BSCVA), MR, SE, and astigmatism (by the power vector method) before surgery and 1, 3, and 6 months thereafter. Differences between patients receiving each type of lens were compared by using a mixed model of repeated measures. RESULTS Visual improvements were evident after operation in both groups. By comparing the attempted to the achieved SE values, we were able to confirm that correction of refractive error was similar in both groups. However, the logMAR UCVA was significantly higher in the toric ICL group at all postoperative time points. Although manifest cylinder power and astigmatism (calculated by using the power vector method) gradually decreased in the toric ICL group, cylinder power 1 month postoperatively increased from -2.62 to -2.75 D; astigmatism was also increased at this time in the toric Artisan group. CONCLUSION The two tested toric pIOLs were similar in terms of the ability to correct refractive error, as assessed 3 months postoperatively. However toric ICLs corrected astigmatism more rapidly and safely. Notably, the large difference in astigmatism level between the two groups 1 month postoperatively indicates that toric ICLs are more effective when used to correct astigmatism.

Abstract
The strategy against tumour lysis syndrome (TLS) had been hyperhydration, urine alkalinization, and allopurinol. Recently, rasburicase was added to the armament against this life-threatening condition. In Korea, rasburicase is used as a rescue therapy for cases with allopurinol-resistant hyperuricemia, because of the restriction by the National Health Insurance. We reviewed our experiences to re-assess the risk factors of TLS and the efficacy of rasburicase. Medical records were retrospectively reviewed for 396 children who were diagnosed as positive with acute leukemia and non-Hodgkin lymphoma between the years 2000 and 2009. The risk factors for TLS were analyzed statistically, and those before and after the availability of rasburicase were compared. Sixty eight patients (17.2%) had TLS. Multivariate analysis showed that pre-chemotherapy hypophosphatemia was a risk factor for TLS, in addition to the known risk factors of hyperuricemia and high lactate dehydrogenase concentration. The availability of rasburicase as a rescue therapy did not negate the importance of uric acid as a risk factor of TLS. Rasburicase as a second line treatment for intractable hyperuricemia was not effective in reducing the incidence of TLS. Pre-chemotherapy hypophosphatemia was a significant independent risk factor for TLS.

Abstract
Background We compared the outcomes of patients with Burkitt lymphoma and French-American-British (FAB) L3 acute lymphoblastic leukemia treated using Lymphoma Malignancy B (LMB) or other treatment protocols. Methods Thirty-eight patients diagnosed between July 1996 and December 2007 were treated using LMB 96, and 22 patients diagnosed between January 1991 and May 1998 (defined as the early period) were treated using the D-COMP or CCG-106B protocols. We retrospectively reviewed their medical records and analyzed cumulative survival according to the treatment period by using Kaplan-Meier analysis. Results There were no intergroup differences in the distribution of age, disease stage, or risk group. The median follow-up period of the 33 live patients in the LMB group was 72 months (range, 36-170 months). Overall survival (OS) and event-free survival (EFS) of patients treated using LMB 96 were 86.8%±5.5% and 81.6%±6.3%, respectively, whereas OS and EFS of patients treated in the early period were 72.7%±9.6% and 68.2%±9.9%, respectively. In the LMB 96 group, OS of cases showing non-complete response (N=8) was 62.5%±17.1%, and OS of relapsed or primary refractory cases (N=6) was 33.3%±19.3%. Central nervous system (CNS) disease, high lactate dehydrogenase levels at diagnosis, and treatment response were significant prognostic factors. Conclusion Survival outcome has drastically improved over the last 2 decades with short-term, dose-intensive chemotherapy. However, CNS involvement or poor response to chemotherapy was worse prognostic factors; therefore, future studies addressing this therapeutic challenge are warranted.

Abstract
A simple and accurate method for killer-cell immunoglobulin-like receptor (KIR) genotyping is developed using KIR gene-specific primer extension (GSPE) followed by bead array hybridization (GSPE method). After amplification of exons 4, 5, and 9, KIR GSPE and bead array hybridization were performed to verify the presence or absence of 16 KIR subfamilies. GSPE method was validated with natural killer/KIR reference panel I consisting of 48 cell types provided by 13th International Histocompatibility Working Group (IHWG) and genomic DNA from 17 peripheral blood cells, 8 cell lines, and 8 buccal cells. The results of reference panel from GSPE method were 100% concordant with the IHWG reference typing information. All genomic DNAs except reference panel were typed for KIR genes with sequence-specific primer methods and showed 100% identical typing results using this novel system. In addition, GSPE method can obtain results in 8 h from DNA with 10 ng genomic DNA in a 96-well-based assay format.

Abstract
MYH9-related disorders are a group of autosomal, dominantly inherited disorders caused by mutations of the MYH9 gene, which encodes the non-muscle myosin heavy chain IIA (NMMHC-IIA). May-Hegglin anomaly and Sebastian, Fechtner, and Epstein syndromes belong to this group. Macrothrombocytopenia is a common characteristic associated with MYH9-related disorders, and basophilic cytoplasmic inclusion bodies in leukocytes (Döhle-like bodies), deafness, cataracts, and glomerulopathy are also found in some patients. In this study, renal manifestations of 7 unrelated Korean patients with MYH9-related disorders were analyzed. Of a total of 7 patients, 4 had disease-related family histories. One familial case had a mutation in the tail domain of NMMHC-IIA and showed milder renal involvement with preserved renal function by his 30s. Among the 3 familial cases without renal involvement, 2 had mutations in the tail domain of NMMHC-IIA and 1 had a mutation in the motor domain. The remaining 3 sporadic cases had severe renal involvement with rapid progression to end-stage renal disease and mutations located in the motor domain. In summary, mutations in the motor domain of NMMHC-IIA and negative family history were associated with severe renal involvement in patients with MYH9-related disorders. These results are in agreement with those of previous reports.

Abstract
Background The impact of HLA matching on outcomes of unrelated donor (URD) hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) varies in different racial or ethnic groups. Since little is known about the impact of such matching on URD HSCT in Korean children, we analyzed this issue. Methods We analyzed the outcomes of 142 patients who underwent URD HSCT at 4 Korean medical centers. All patient donor pairs were fully typed for HLA-A, -B, -C, and -DR alleles. Results At a median follow-up of 22 months, 3-year survival rates for patients with 8, 7, and ≤6 matched alleles were 88.4%, 70.7%, and 53.6%, respectively. A single mismatch (Mm) at HLA-B or -C was associated with lower survival compared with that associated with 8 matched alleles. No significant differences were observed between single-allele and single-antigen Mms with respect to survival rate or acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) incidence rates. HLA disparity had a greater impact on the survival of patients with high-risk malignancy than of those with low-risk malignancy. Among pairs with a single Mm, only locus A showed a significant association and higher risk of grade III-IV aGVHD compared to those in patients with 8 matched alleles. Conclusion Disparity in HLA class I, regardless of antigen or allele Mm, adversely affected both survival and grade III-IV aGVHD development. An increased number of HLA Mms was associated with a higher risk of post-transplantation complications. Further investigations using larger cohorts are required to confirm the effects of HLA mismatching on URD HSCT patient outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The pattern of gastric cancer in the Western world is changing, with an increased proportion of tumours in the upper stomach. The aim of this study was to investigate changes in clinicopathological features and survival of patients with resected gastric cancer at a single institution, in an area of high incidence in the Far East. METHODS Clinical features and pathological findings were compared in patients with gastric cancer who underwent gastrectomy at Seoul National University Hospital during four consecutive periods (1986-1990, 1991-1995, 1996-2000 and 2001-2006). RESULTS There were 12 026 patients. The mean age increased from 53·4 years in the first period to 57·4 years in the last (P < 0·001). The proportion of patients aged 70 years or older also increased, reaching 16·1 per cent in the final period. Upper-third cancer increased from 5·3 per cent in the first period to 14·0 per cent in the fourth (P < 0·001). Early gastric cancer (pathological T1) increased continuously over the four time intervals, from 24·8 to 48·9 per cent (P < 0·001). The overall 5-year survival rate increased from 64·0 per cent in the first period to 73·2 per cent at the end (P < 0·001), and this survival improvement was apparent in patients aged 40 years or more. CONCLUSION The mean age of patients with gastric cancer has increased during the past 20 years. The proportion of early gastric cancer and overall survival have gradually increased, especially in patients aged over 40 years.

Abstract
We report the outcome of 236 pediatric umbilical cord blood transplantations (UCBT) performed in Korea. Given that the sources of the grafts were mostly unrelated donors (n = 226; 95.8%), only the results of unrelated UCBT were included for all statistics. The most frequent primary disease was acute leukemia (n = 167). In total, 91.7% of recipients were seropositive for cytomegalovirus (CMV). The median doses of nucleated cells and CD34+ cells were 4.84 × 10(7)/kg and 2.00 × 10(5)/kg, respectively. The median times to neutrophil (>0.5 × 10(9)/L) and platelet recovery (>20 × 10(9)/L) were 18 and 45 days, respectively. Grade 2-4 acute graft-versus-host-disease (GVHD) and chronic GVHD developed in 41.1 and 36.1% of cases, respectively. Forty-five patients developed CMV disease. The 5-year overall and event-free survival were 47.5 and 36.9%, respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that adverse factors for survival of the whole cohort were total body irradiation-based conditioning (P = 0.007), salvage transplant (P = 0.001), failure to achieve early complete chimerism (P < 0.0005), and CMV disease (P = 0.001). The outcomes of the single- and double-unit UCBT (n = 64) were similar, while double-unit recipients were heavier (P < 0.0005) and older (P < 0.0005). We conclude that double-unit UCBT is a reasonable option for older or heavier children and that the thorough surveillance of CMV infection and the development of an effective CMV therapeutic strategy may be especially important for Korean children, whose CMV seroprevalence exceeds 90%.

Abstract
Tumor seeding is a strong negative prognostic factor for patients with medulloblastoma. Because Chang's M staging is based primarily on CT and myelographic findings and might be contradictory to the direction of normal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow, seeding patterns and appropriate staging of medulloblastoma need to be revisited in patients diagnosed in the MRI era. We retrospectively reviewed the clinical and radiological data of 86 patients with a diagnosis of medulloblastoma who were treated in the MRI era. The presence of seeding in each subarachnoid space compartment and the patterns of seeding were analyzed in correlation with patient survival data. Thirty-four patients had gross seeding on perioperative MRI. Thirty-two patients had seeding in the spinal compartment. Sixteen and 12 patients had seeding in the infratentorial and supratentorial compartments, respectively. There was an apparent hierarchy of seeding (ie, from seeding in the spinal compartment up to the supratentorial compartment). Patients with seeding in the spinal compartment had longer progression-free survival (P = .038) and a tendency toward better overall survival (P = .053) compared with patients with seeding in intracranial compartments. We modified Chang's M staging based on the CSF flow and termed this approach "CSF M staging." CSF M staging for medulloblastoma, in which intracranial seeding occupies a higher rank than spinal seeding, was a better predictor of patient prognosis. This modified staging method may be applied to metastatic staging of brain tumors located in the fourth ventricle.

Abstract
Purpose To evaluate the visual outcomes of retinoblastoma in the posterior pole (RBPP) treated with chemotherapy plus local treatments and to address the prognostic factors that influence such outcomes. Methods The medical records of patients with RBPP diagnosed at the Department of Pediatric Ophthalmology, Seoul National University Children's Hospital between August 1987 and September 2007 were reviewed retrospectively. Only those patients treated via primary chemotherapy plus local treatments were included. The presence of foveal involvement and tumors in the posterior pole before and after treatment, the type of regression pattern and the best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of each patient were evaluated. Results A total of 13 eyes in 12 patients were included. The mean final BCVA for treated RBPP was 20/210 (range, hand motion to 20/16). However, eight eyes (61.5%) had an acuity of 20/200 or better and seven eyes (53.8%) had an acuity of 20/50 or better. The mean final BCVA was significantly better in cases with negative foveal involvement; however, four eyes (37.5%) with positive foveal involvement had an acuity of 20/200 or better. Tumors area in the posterior pole and the type of regression pattern were not significantly related to final BCVA. Conclusions Over one half of the studied RBPP patients had working vision. Although the eyes had RBPP with positive foveal involvement, about one-third of the patients had working vision. Vision preservation should be considered when deciding on RBPP treatment.
