Abstract
Cleaning and disinfection of the broiler stable environment is an essential part of farm hygiene management. Adequate cleaning and disinfection is essential for prevention and control of animal diseases and zoonoses. The goal of this study was to shed light on the dynamics of microbiological and non-microbiological parameters during the successive steps of cleaning and disinfection and to select the most suitable sampling methods and parameters to evaluate cleaning and disinfection in broiler houses. The effectiveness of cleaning and disinfection protocols was measured in six broiler houses on two farms through visual inspection, adenosine triphosphate hygiene monitoring and microbiological analyses. Samples were taken at three time points: 1) before cleaning, 2) after cleaning, and 3) after disinfection. Before cleaning and after disinfection, air samples were taken in addition to agar contact plates and swab samples taken from various sampling points for enumeration of total aerobic flora, Enterococcus spp., and Escherichia coli and the detection of E. coli and Salmonella. After cleaning, air samples, swab samples, and adenosine triphosphate swabs were taken and a visual score was also assigned for each sampling point. The mean total aerobic flora determined by swab samples decreased from 7.7±1.4 to 5.7±1.2 log CFU/625 cm2 after cleaning and to 4.2±1.6 log CFU/625 cm2 after disinfection. Agar contact plates were used as the standard for evaluating cleaning and disinfection, but in this study they were found to be less suitable than swabs for enumeration. In addition to measuring total aerobic flora, Enterococcus spp. seemed to be a better hygiene indicator to evaluate cleaning and disinfection protocols than E. coli. All stables were Salmonella negative, but the detection of its indicator organism E. coli provided additional information for evaluating cleaning and disinfection protocols. Adenosine triphosphate analyses gave additional information about the hygiene level of the different sampling points.

Abstract
We conducted a survey among convenient samples of pig farmers (N=281) in Belgium, France, Germany, Sweden and Switzerland. We identified some significant differences among the five investigated countries (independent variable) regarding farmers' antimicrobial usage compared to their own country and worries related to pig farming (dependent variables), but most of the differences were rather small. In general, farmers perceived their own antimicrobial usage to be lower than that of their peers in the same country and lower than or similar to that of farmers from other countries. This may be a consequence of our convenience sample, resulting in self-selection of highly motivated farmers. Farmers were significantly more worried about financial/legal issues than about antimicrobial resistance. They believed that a reduction in revenues for slaughter pigs treated with a large amount of antimicrobials would have the most impact on reduced antimicrobial usage in their country. Further, farmers who were more worried about antimicrobial resistance and who estimated their own antimicrobial usage as lower than their fellow countrymen, perceived more impact from policy measures on the reduction of antimicrobials. Our results indicated that the same policy measures can be applied to reduce antimicrobial usage in pig farming in all five countries. Moreover, it seems worthwhile to increase pig farmers' awareness of the threat of antimicrobial resistance and its relation to antimicrobial usage; not only because pig farmers appeared little worried about antimicrobial usage but also because it affected farmers' perception of policy measures to reduce antimicrobial usage. Our samples were not representative for the national pig farmer populations. Further research is therefore needed to examine to what extent our findings can be generalised to these populations and to farmers in other countries.

Abstract
Het project Sterycat is een door de Federale Overheidsdienst Volksgezondheid, Veiligheid van de Voedselketen en Leefmilieu gefinancierd wetenschappelijk onderzoek dat, in een samenwerking tussen de Faculteit Diergeneeskunde en zeventien Vlaamse asielen, het effect van vroegcastratie op de gezondheid en het gedrag van katten heeft onderzocht. Om vroegcastratie van asielkittens efficiënt te kunnen integreren in het overheidsbeleid, is het belangrijk de opinie van het werkveld te kennen. Daarom werd op het einde van het project een enquête (16 vragen, 70 exemplaren in totaal) rondgestuurd naar de asieldierenartsen en -medewerkers van de deelnemende asielen. Vijfendertig personen vulden de enquête in (10 asieldierenartsen en 25 asielmedewerkers). De meerderheid onder hen (85%) was voorstander van de voortzetting van vroegcastratie van asielkatten na het project Sterycat. Niettegenstaande was er bij sommige respondenten toch ongerustheid over mogelijke complicaties door de ingreep (58%) en over uitbraken van virale ziekten (72%). De financiële haalbaarheid en het uitwerken van een regeling om derving van inkomsten bij niet-asieldierenartsen tegen te gaan, werden belangrijk geacht voor het succesvol toepassen van vroegcastratie bij asielkatten. Voor het efficiënt reduceren van de overpopulatie van katten zouden daarnaast ook particuliere katteneigenaars en gemeenten hun verantwoordelijkheid inzake reproductiepreventie bij katten moeten opnemen. De perceptie van de haalbaarheid van vroegcastratie en van het chippen van asielkatten was significant geassocieerd met het enthousiasme van de dierenarts, de toegenomen adoptiekansen van de kittens en met het feit dat bijgedragen werd tot het reduceren van de overpopulatie van katten in asielen. De mate waarin de voortzetting van vroegcastratie van asielkatten belangrijk werd geacht was dan weer geassocieerd met het type asiel en de verwachting van een beter rendement van het asiel. Uit de resultaten van deze enquête kan besloten worden dat de meeste deelnemende asieldierenartsen en -medewerkers het belangrijk vinden dat vroegcastratie van katten verdergezet wordt in hun asiel, mits rekening gehouden wordt met het financiële aspect van de procedure en de verantwoordelijkheid van particuliere katteneigenaars en gemeenten.

Abstract
In this article, detailed studies on antimicrobial resistance to commensal E. coli (in pigs, meatproducing bovines, broiler chickens and veal calves) and pathogenic E. coli (in pigs and bovines) in Belgium are presented for 2011. Broiler chicken and veal calf isolates of commensal E. coli demonstrated higher antimicrobial resistance prevalence than isolates from pigs and bovines. Fifty percent of E. coli isolates from broiler chickens were resistant to at least five antimicrobials, whereas sixty-one percent of bovine E. coli isolates were susceptible to all antimicrobials tested. On the other hand, bovine pathogenic E. coli isolates showed an extended resistance profile with more than half of the isolates being resistant to ten or more antimicrobials. The results are not significantly different from the results from previously published studies on commensal bacteria in pigs in Belgium, although different methodologies of sampling and susceptibility testing were used.

Abstract
Given the risks associated with antimicrobial resistance and its link with antimicrobial use, available data on antimicrobial use in the Belgian pig, broiler and veal calf production were compared. Allowing for comparison of the data available from three peer-reviewed scientific articles, the unit of measurement for antimicrobial use was the Treatment Incidence (TI), defined as the number of animals per 1000 treated daily with one ‘defined’ (DDDA) or ‘used daily dose animal’ (UDDA). Moreover, extrapolation of farm-level data to national-level data was attempted according to the European Surveillance of Veterinary Antimicrobial Consumption (ESVAC) methodology, to estimate the amount of antimicrobials used in Belgium per species. Although, among the three species, the highest TI was observed in veal calves (TIDDDA=414, TIUDDA=379), based on the extrapolation, it was estimated that most antimicrobials were administered to pigs (159.4 tons). Thus, the most rapid decline in the total use could potentially be achieved by targeting the pig sector. During the process of data collection for comparison and calculation, it became obvious that there is a need for harmonized monitoring programs.

Abstract
Salmonella enterica infection in pigs is economically important and poses a zoonotic risk. In this study, the efficacy of an attenuated S. enterica serovar Typhimurium strain was evaluated in three farrow-to-finish pig herds. In each herd, 120 piglets were vaccinated orally at 3 and 24 days of age, while 120 piglets served as unvaccinated controls. Faeces, ileocaecal lymph nodes and caecal contents were examined for S. Typhimurium by isolation and serum was analysed for antibodies against S. Typhimurium by ELISA. All pigs were weighed at pre-weaning and slaughter to determine daily weight gain. In vaccinated pigs prior to slaughter, significantly fewer animals excreted S. enterica, there was a significantly lower S. enterica-specific mean antibody titre and there was a significantly higher mean daily weight gain compared to unvaccinated controls. In two herds, there were significantly lower proportions of S. enterica positive ileocaecal lymph nodes and caecal contents at slaughter between the vaccinated and control groups, but this difference was not significant across all three herds. S. enterica with the same auxotrophic characteristics and genotype as the vaccine strain was isolated from several samples of faeces, ileocaecal lymph nodes and caecal contents from vaccinated pigs. These findings indicate that vaccination with an attenuated S. Typhimurium strain reduces S. enterica shedding, but the reduction is not consistent and the vaccine strain may persist in tissues.

Abstract
In this paper, the modern Belgian veal industry is situated in a European context, and an overview is provided of the major past, present and future challenges for veal production. The production of white veal requires a specific diet and housing conditions to assure a controlled iron anemic state resulting in pale carcasses. In response to the increasing public concern about animal welfare, legal limits for hemoglobin (in 1990), the provision of a minimum quality of solid feed to assure ruminal health and group housing from the age of eight weeks on (in 2007), have been implemented sector-wide. The integrated structure of the sector likely made it possible to realize these radical changes at relatively short notice. Despite the pioneers role the veal industry played in the development of quality labels for food safety and all efforts made towards improved nutrition and housing, the veal production remains highly liable to public criticism on welfare issues. Nowadays, especially the intensive antimicrobial use in relation to high levels of antimicrobial resistance in commensal, pathogenic and zoonotic bacteria in veal calves is strongly criticized. The future challenge lies in the development of veal production systems, which require only few antibiotics, but safeguard animal welfare and revenue.

Abstract
Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is one of the most important viruses to cause disease in cattle worldwide. The virus is endemically present in Belgium. Clinical diagnosis of BVDV infection is difficult. Therefore, monitoring through testing is necessary to detect the presence of the virus on farms. As vaccination alone does not suffice for eradication, a combination of measures is required for successful control. Via a questionnaire, the BVDV policy on 241 selected Flemish cattle farms was investigated. This revealed some striking results. For the majority of the herds, the BVDV status was unknown (63%), and only 23% had a monitoring program in place. Furthermore, on seven out of ten (71%) BVDV-vaccinating farms, vaccination against BVDV was implemented as a strategy without knowing the actual BVDV status.

Abstract
The environmental sustainability of microalgae production for aquaculture purposes was analyzed using exergy analysis (EA) and life cycle assessment (LCA). A production process (pilot 2012, 240 m(2)) was assessed and compared with two upscaling scenarios (pilot 2013, 1320 m(2) and first production scale 2015, 2.5 ha). The EA at process level revealed that drying and cultivation had the lowest efficiencies. The LCA showed an improvement in resource efficiency after upscaling: 55.5 MJ(ex,CEENE)/MJ(ex) DW biomass was extracted from nature in 2012, which was reduced to 21.6 and 2.46 MJ(ex,CEENE)/MJ(ex) DW in the hypothetical 2013 and 2015 scenarios, respectively. Upscaling caused the carbon footprint to decline by factor 20 (0.09 kg CO2,eq/MJ(ex) DW in 2015). In the upscaling scenarios, microalgae production for aquaculture purposes appeared to be more sustainable in resource use than a reference fish feed (7.70 MJ(ex,CEENE) and 0.05 kg CO2,eq per MJ(ex) DW).

Abstract
The biosecurity status of 95 breeder-finisher pig herds was quantified using a risk-based weighted scoring system. Data relating to herd-, farmer- and production-characteristics and to the prophylactic use of antimicrobials were also collected. The average external biosecurity score (measures to prevent pathogens from entering a herd) was 65 (range, 45-89) and the average internal score (measures to reduce the within-herd spread of pathogens) was 52 (range, 18-87). External scores were positively associated with herd size, while internal scores were negatively associated with both 'age of buildings' and 'years of experience of the farmer', indicating that biosecurity is generally better implemented in larger herds, in more modern facilities and by younger farmers. External and internal biosecurity scores were positively associated with daily weight gain and negatively associated with feed conversion ratio of fattening pigs. Internal scores were negatively associated with disease treatment incidence, suggesting that improved biosecurity might help in reducing the amount of antimicrobials used prophylactically. This study demonstrates and quantifies a clear link between biosecurity and both production- and antimicrobial treatment-related criteria in pig herds.

Abstract
Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serotype Enteritidis is a major cause of egg-borne human salmonellosis. The ability to survive in egg albumen at chicken body temperature was hypothesized to be an important factor involved in the predominant contamination of eggs by this specific serotype. Eighty-nine Salmonella strains from different serotypes, belonging to 5 serogroups, were incubated for 24 h in egg white at 42°C. The number of Salmonella Enteritidis strains that were able to survive in egg white was significantly higher compared with strains belonging to other serotypes and serogroups that were tested in this study. These data add evidence to the hypothesis that egg white survival is one of the reasons why Salmonella Enteritidis is more predominantly isolated from contaminated eggs, and helps explaining why most reported egg-borne Salmonella outbreaks in humans are caused by Salmonella Enteritidis.

Abstract
AIMS To assess, in a cleaned and disinfected barn environment, the efficacy of an animal disinfection strategy to reduce the livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) prevalence in sows, their offspring and the barn environment. METHODS AND RESULTS On each farm, six sow rounds were sampled; sows were divided into either a test or control group. Per round, 20 sows and 40 of their piglets were sampled at different time points together with the barn environment. The disinfection strategy of the test groups consisted of washing the sows with a shampoo followed by disinfection of the skin with a solution containing chlorhexidine digluconate and isopropanol. On the first day of disinfection and 6 days after stopping the disinfection, a significant decrease (P < 0·01) of on average 68 and 66% in sow MRSA prevalence was observed on both farms, whereas no decrease was seen in the control groups. Just before weaning, 21-28 days after the end of the disinfection strategy, the difference in MRSA prevalence between both groups was reduced to 4% and no longer significant (P = 0·20). The MRSA prevalence of the piglets in the test groups was significantly lower (26%; P < 0·01) 6 days after the end of disinfection. Just before weaning, this difference was reduced to 5% but still significant (P < 0·01). In the swine nursery unit, no significant difference (P = 0·99) was seen between both groups. Based on semi-quantitative counts, a relationship (r(2) > 0·6; P < 0·01) was seen between MRSA contamination in the barn environment and the MRSA prevalence in pigs. CONCLUSION Results show that the tested disinfection strategy reduces temporarily the sow and piglet MRSA status, but does not result in a final reduction in MRSA at weaning or in the nursery unit. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY First report on the efficacy of an animal disinfection strategy to reduce LA-MRSA prevalence in sows, their offspring and the barn environment.

Abstract
The main objective of this review is to provide current information regarding non-infectious risk factors associated with stillborn piglets. These factors can be roughly categorized as genetic, maternal, piglet and environmental factors, but also interactions exist between several factors. An understanding of this multifactorial problem should help practitioners and farmers implementing a more effective farrowing management to obtain a high reproductive efficiency. From the papers studied in this review, it can be concluded that litter size, parity, sow's body condition and farrowing supervision/birth assistance seems to be the most relevant risk factors associated with stillborn piglets.

Abstract
The increased incidence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection in equine hospitals highlights the need for infection control protocols based on optimal patient screening. In horses, the deep ventral meatus of the nasal cavity is the principal site sampled to detect MRSA. However, in humans, the anterior nares are the preferred sampling site. The objective of this study was to determine the optimal sampling location in the nasal chambers for MRSA in horses by comparing the results obtained from three different locations (the vestibulum, diverticulum and ventral meatus) in 240 hospitalised animals. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing and epidemiological typing were conducted on representative subsets of the isolates obtained. Compared to the more invasive ventral meatus sampling (relative sensitivity 68.9%; isolation rate 37.9%), vestibulum (RS 81.1%; IR 44.6%, P=0.13) and diverticulum (RS 52.3%; IR 28.8%, P=0.03) sampling were more or less sensitive, respectively. In total, 132 horses (55%) were MRSA positive with the vast majority (98.5%) carrying genotyped isolates of the livestock-associated (LA)-MRSA clonal complex (CC) 398, and only a minority (1.5%) CC8. Of the 22 MLST typed isolates, five belonged to a novel ST2197 (t011, CC398). Although 93.9% of the isolates were multi-resistant (to β-lactam, tetracycline, trimethoprim, and gentamicin), <5% were resistant to virtually all antimicrobials commonly used in equine medicine. The study findings indicate that detection of MRSA in horses may be enhanced by replacing the traditional deep sampling of the ventral nasal meatus by the less invasive approach of sampling the nasal vestibulum.

Abstract
Livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) has emerged in a wide variety of animal species, including poultry. The objective of this study was to evaluate three different chromogenic media for MRSA clonal complex (CC) 398 detection in broilers. On three Belgian poultry farms, 50 broiler chickens were sampled per farm from both nose shell and cloaca. All swab specimens were enriched and inoculated the following day on three chromogenic media: chromID MRSA (bioMérieux), Brilliance MRSA 2 Agar (Oxoid) and MRSASelect (Bio-Rad). ChromID had the highest isolation rates, yet, Brilliance MRSA 2 Agar demonstrated the highest relative sensitivity, while MRSASelect and Brilliance MRSA 2 Agar showed the highest relative specificity. A subset of MRSA isolates was confirmed to be CC398 by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) targeting sau1-hsdS1. In conclusion, Brilliance MRSA 2 Agar outperformed MRSASelect and chromID MRSA for the detection of MRSA in broilers.
