Abstract
INTRODUCTION There is a requirement in the Ministry of Defence for an objective method of comparing the area of coverage of different body armour designs for future applications. Existing comparisons derived from surface wound mapping are limited in that they can only demonstrate the skin entry wound location. The Coverage of Armour Tool (COAT) is a novel three-dimensional model capable of comparing the coverage provided by body armour designs, but limited information exists as to which anatomical structures require inclusion. The aim of this study was to assess the utility of COAT, in the assessment of neck protection, using clinically relevant injury data. METHOD Hospital notes and post mortem records of all UK soldiers injured by an explosive fragment to the neck between 01 Jan 2006 and 31 December 2012 from Iraq and Afghanistan were analysed to determine which anatomical structures were responsible for death or functional disability at one year post injury. Using COAT a comparison of three ballistic neck collar designs was undertaken with reference to the percentage of these anatomical structures left exposed. RESULTS 13/81 (16%) survivors demonstrated complications at one year, most commonly upper limb weakness from brachial plexus injury or a weak voice from laryngeal trauma. In 14/94 (15%) soldiers the neck wound was believed to have been the sole cause of death, primarily from carotid artery damage, spinal cord transection or rupture of the larynx. COAT objectively demonstrated that despite the larger OSPREY collar having almost double the surface area than the two-piece prototype collar, the percentage area of vulnerable cervical structures left exposed only reduced from 16.3% to 14.4%. DISCUSSION COAT demonstrated its ability to objectively quantify the potential effectiveness of different body armour designs in providing coverage of vulnerable anatomical structures from different shot line orientations. To improve its utility, it is recommended that COAT be further developed to enable weapon and tissue specific information to be modelled, and that clinically significant injuries to other body regions are also incorporated.

Abstract
A method based on thermal bistability for ultralow-threshold microlaser optimization is demonstrated. When sweeping the pump laser frequency across a pump resonance, the dynamic thermal bistability slows down the power variation. The resulting line shape modification enables a real-time monitoring of the laser characteristic. We demonstrate this method for a functionalized microsphere exhibiting a submicrowatt laser threshold. This approach is confirmed by comparing the results with a step-by-step recording in quasi-static thermal conditions.

Abstract
Amyloid β-precursor protein (APP) proteolytic products C83 and C99 are substrates for γ-secretase as well as products, respectively, of α- or β-secretase. In contrast to APP, C83 and C99 were derivatized by a water soluble biotinylation reagent to a much greater extent at 18°C than at 0°C in CHO cells expressing the Swedish mutant form of APP750. Intracellular C99 and C83 cycle to the cell surface when maintained in buffered saline at 18°C thus identifying proteins derivatized at 18°C as residing in recycling compartments. More than 80% of C99 and C83 biotinylated at 18°C is associated with detergent resistant membrane (DRM). There thus appears to be no differential distribution of α- or β-secretase products into the DRM fraction that would be expected if localization to DRM determines alternative secretase pathways. γ-Secretase inhibitors increased the fraction of C99 but not C83 in the 18°C pool by >50% and doubled the half-life of C99 in that compartment, showing that a substantial amount of C99 is proteolyzed by γ-secretase in a compartment rich in recycling proteins. The temporal appearance of APP on the cell surface preceded that of C99 in the recycling compartment, further supporting the cleavage of APP in recycling endosomes.

Abstract
We report the direct observation of the electromagnetic-field distribution of whispering gallery modes in silica microcavities (spheres and toroids). It is revealed by their excitation efficiency with a tapered fiber coupler swept along the meridian. The originality of this method lies in the use of the coupler itself for the near-field mapping, eliminating the need of additional tools used in previous work. This method is successfully applied to microspheres and microtoroids.

Abstract
In the measurement of the amplitude of vibration of objects, holographic imaging techniques usually involve fringe counting; because of the limited resolution of the images, measurements of large amplitudes are not accessible. We demonstrate a technique that suppresses the necessity of fringe counting--frequency sideband imaging--where the order of the sideband is considered a marker of the amplitude. The measurement is completely local: no comparison with another reference point on the object is necessary. It involves a sharp variation of a signal, which makes it robust against perturbations. The method is demonstrated in an experiment made with a vibrating clarinet reed; phase modulations as large as 1000 rad have been measured.
