Abstract
Familial colorectal cancer type X (FCCX) encompasses a group of families with dominant inheritance pattern of colorectal cancer (CRC) but no alteration in any known CRC susceptibility gene. Therefore, the explanation of their susceptibility is a priority to offer an accurate genetic counseling. We screened the 27 coding exons and exon-intron boundaries of BRCA2 in 48 FCCX probands. We identified 29 variants including a frameshift mutation. Deleterious variant c.3847_3848delGT p.(Val1283Lysfs*2) showed cosegregation with disease as well as loss of heterozygosity (LOH) in CRC tumor DNA. This is the first evidence of germline BRCA2 pathogenic mutation associated with CRC risk. Furthermore, missense variants c.502C>A p.(Pro168Thr), c.5744C>T p.(Thr1915Met) and c.7759C>T p.(Leu2587Phe) were proposed as candidate risk alleles based on cosegregation, LOH tumor analysis and in silico testing.

Abstract
Statistical analysis has been used for the first time to evaluate the dispersion of quantitative data in the solid-phase microextraction (SPME) followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of blackberry (Rubus ulmifolius Schott) volatiles with the aim of improving their precision. Experimental and randomly simulated data were compared using different statistical parameters (correlation coefficients, Principal Component Analysis loadings and eigenvalues). Non-random factors were shown to significantly contribute to total dispersion; groups of volatile compounds could be associated with these factors. A significant improvement of precision was achieved when considering percent concentration ratios, rather than percent values, among those blackberry volatiles with a similar dispersion behavior. As novelty over previous references, and to complement this main objective, the presence of non-random dispersion trends in data from simple blackberry model systems was evidenced. Although the influence of the type of matrix on data precision was proved, the possibility of a better understanding of the dispersion patterns in real samples was not possible from model systems. The approach here used was validated for the first time through the multicomponent characterization of Italian blackberries from different harvest years.

Abstract
Detection of twelve components in the 6Li MAS-NMR spectra of Li3Ti2(PO4)3 recorded at room temperature suggests the location of Li+ ions near different three-oxygen faces that define large M2 cavities. The occupation of M3 and M3′ sites deduced by the ND technique has been ascribed to the lower spatial resolution achieved in ND experiments.

Abstract
We analyzed the incidence, clinicopathological features, risk factors and prognosis of patients with EBV-associated post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (EBV-PTLD) in 288 adults undergoing umbilical cord blood transplantation (UCBT) at a single institution. Twelve patients developed proven EBV-PTLD at a median time of 73 days (range, 36-812). Three-year cumulative incidence (CI) of EBV-PTLD was 4.3% (95% CI: 1.9-6.7). All patients presented with extranodal involvement. Most frequently affected sites were the liver, spleen, central nervous system (CNS), Waldeyer's ring and BM in 7, 6, 4, 3 and 3 patients, respectively. One patient had polymorphic and 11 had monomorphic EBV-PTLD (7 diffuse large B-cell lymphomas not otherwise specified, 4 plasmablastic lymphomas). We confirmed donor origin and EBV infection in all histological samples. EBV-PTLD was the cause of death in 11 patients at a median time of 23 days (range, 1-84). The 3-year CI of EBV-PTLD was 12.9% (95% CI: 3.2-22.5) and 2.6% (95% CI: 0.5-4.7) for patients receiving reduced-intensity conditioning (RIC) and myeloablative conditioning, respectively (P<0.0001). In conclusion, adults with EBV-PTLD after UCBT showed frequent visceral and CNS involvement. The prognosis was poor despite routine viral monitoring and early intervention. An increased risk of EBV-PTLD was noted among recipients of RIC regimens.

Abstract
We report outcomes after single (s) and double (d) umbilical cord blood transplantation (UCBT) after myeloablative conditioning (MAC) regimen for 239 patients transplanted for acute leukemia in first complete remission (CR1). All sUCBT patients received a total nucleated cell dose >2.5 × 10(7)/kg. Conditioning regimen for sUCBT was total body irradiation (TBI)12 Gy- or busulfan (BU)-based ± fludarabine (Flu) (n=68, group 1), thiotepa+BU+Flu (TBF) (n=88, group 2), and for dUCBT it was TBI12 Gy+cyclophosphamide ± Flu (n=83, group 3). dUCBT recipients were younger, received higher cell dose and less frequently antithymocyte globulin. In multivariate analysis, we found similar neutrophil recovery among the three groups; however, acute graft-versus-host disease II-IV was higher in dUCBT compared with others. Non-relapse mortality and relapse incidence were not statistically different among the three groups. Leukemia-free survival was 30% for sUCBT using TBI- or BU-based MAC compared with 48% for sUCBT TBF and 48% for dUCBT (P=0.02 and P=0.03, respectively), and it was not statistically different between sUCBT with TBF and dUCBT. In conclusion, use of sUCBT with adequate cell dose (>2.5 × 10(7)/kg) and a specific conditioning regimen in the MAC setting results in similar outcomes as dUCBT. The choice of TBF conditioning regimen for sUCBT may improve results, and whether this regimen may be effective in dUCBT should be further analyzed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate long-term outcomes in patients maintaining a nevirapine (NVP)-based regimen. METHODS Retrospective, multicenter, cohort study including patients currently receiving an NVP regimen that had been started at least 5 years previously. Demographic, clinical, and analytical variables were recorded. RESULTS Median follow-up was 8.9 (5.7-11.3) years. Baseline characteristics: 74% men, 47 years old, 36% drug users, 40% AIDS, 40% HCV+, 51.4% detectable HIV-1 viral load, CD4 count 395 (4-1,421)/μL, 19% CD4 < 200/μL, 27% ALT grade 1-2, 36% AST grade 1-2. Thirty percent ART-naive, 83%received NVP associated with 2 nucleoside analogues during the study period, and 17% a protease inhibitor. A significant improvement was observed in general health status markers, including hemoglobin, platelets, and albumin, regardless of HCV coinfection. CD4 cell gain was +218 and +322/μL after 6 and 9 years, respectively (+321 and +391 in naive patients). Triglycerides significantly decreased in pretreated patients, whereas the percentage of patients with HDLc < 1.03 mmol/L and LDL-c > 3.37 mmol/L significantly decreased in a subsample with available values. A significant decrease in transaminases, alkaline phosphatase, and Fib4 score was observed, mainly in HCV+ and ARV-naive patients. CONCLUSIONS In patients who tolerate NVP therapy, (even those with HCV coinfection), long term benefits may be significant in terms of a progressive improvement in general health status markers and CD4 response, a favorable lipid profile, and good liver tolerability.

Abstract
The effect of meat cultures (non lactic acid bacteria) on the growth and production of enterotoxins and thermonuclease by Staphylococcus aureus was studied. Micrococcus varians did not affect growth nor the synthesis of metabolites. Levels of enterotoxins A, B and D produced by the respective S. aureus strains were reduced by S. xylosus, S. saprophyticus and S. carnosus. The two latter species prevented production of enterotoxin C(1) and S. xylosus markedly reduced the amount produced. The three coagulase-negative staphylococci showed little inhibitory effect on the growth of S. aureus. Penicillium nalgiovense did not show inhibitory activity against the four S. aureus strains. Debaryomyces hansenii slightly inhibited growth of the enterotoxin A-producing strain, but reduced enterotoxin synthesis at 30 °C. Thermonuclease was detected whenever enterotoxins were detected though the influence of the effector organism was dependent on the test strain.

Abstract
Health care workers (HCW) are included each year among risk groups for vaccination against influenza. However, vaccination coverage among this group in our country is very low, not exceeding 25%. Convinced that one of the best tools to increase this coverage among professionals in our country are the scientific evidence, 19 scientific societies and associations professionals bringing together health professionals more directly related to influenza as an health problem, and the General Nursing Council, met to discuss and develop this consensus document in order to inform HCW about the appropriateness of their vaccination against influenza and the benefits that flow from it for themselves, for their patients and for the rest of the population. This recommendation is based on 3 pillars: argument of necessity, ethics and exemplary.

Abstract
An analytical study of the relativistic interaction of a linearly polarized laser field of ω frequency with highly overdense plasma is presented. In agreement with one-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, the model self-consistently explains the transition between the sheath inverse bremsstrahlung absorption regime and the J×B heating (responsible for the 2ω electron bunches), as well as the high harmonic radiations and the mean electron energy.

Abstract
Taking into account the phase equilibrium relationships within the Ca3(PO4)2-CaSiO3-CaMg(SiO3)2 ternary system, three bioactive glasses with a eutectic composition and analogous amounts of Ca3(PO4)2 (∼40 wt.%) have been prepared. The structure of the glasses was investigated by 31P and 29Si magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS-NMR) spectroscopy. The glasses exhibited thermal expansion coefficients (50-600 °C) of 11.8-13.3×10(-6) °C(-1), a glass transition temperature of 790-720 °C and a softening temperature of 811-750 °C. The mechanical properties of the glasses were as follows: bending strength ∼100 MPa, Young's modulus 94-83 GPa, Vickers microhardness 7.1-4.1 GPa and toughness 0.8 MPa m1/2. The bioactive properties were discussed in terms of their structure deduced by MAS-NMR spectroscopy and the field strength of the network modifiers (Mg2+ and Ca2+). A knowledge of the glass structure was important in predicting its bioactivity.

Ionic mobility in Nasicon-type LiMIV2(PO4)3 materials followed by 7Li NMR spectroscopy. ACTA ACUST UNITED AC 2011. Abstract
AbstractLithium mobility in LiM2(PO4)3 compounds, with M= Ge, Ti, Sn, Zr and Hf, has been investigated by 7Li Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy in the temperature range 100-500 K. From the analysis of 7Li NMR quadrupole interactions (CQ and η parameters), Li sites occupancy and exchange processes between structural sites have been studied. Below 250K, Li ions are preferentially located at M1 sites in rhombohedral phases, but occupy M12 sites in triclinic ones. At increasing temperatures, Li mobility has been deduced from spin-spin () and spin-lattice relaxation () rates. In this analysis, the presence of two relaxation mechanisms in plots has been associated with departures of conductivity from the Arrhenius behavior. At high temperatures, residence times at M12−T11−T11−T1 and M12 sites become similar and conductivity significantly increase. This superionic state can be achieved by enlarged order-disorder transformations in rhombohedral phases, or by sharp first order transitions in triclinic ones. Results described in the LiTi2(PO4)3 sample have been compared with those obtained in rhombohedral Li1+xTi2-xAlx(PO4)3 and LiTi2-xZrx(PO4)3 series showing respectively higher and lower conductivities. In the case of Li1.2Ti1.8Al0.2(PO4)3, displaying the highest reported conductivity, NMR results are discussed in relation with those obtained by Neutron Diffraction (ND) and Impedance Spectroscopy (IS). Diffusion coefficients determined by NMR Pulse Field Gradient (PFG) technique are similar to those deduced from Impedance Spectroscopy and NMR relaxation data.

Plant phenology, growth and nutritive quality of Briza maxima: responses induced by enhanced ozone atmospheric levels and nitrogen enrichment. ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION (BARKING, ESSEX : 1987) 2011; 159:423-430. Abstract
An assessment of the effects of tropospheric ozone (O(3)) levels and substrate nitrogen (N) supplementation, singly and in combination, on phenology, growth and nutritive quality of Briza maxima was carried out. Two serial experiments were developed in Open-Top Chambers (OTC) using three O(3) and three N levels. Increased O(3) exposure did not affect the biomass-related parameters, but enhanced senescence, increased fiber foliar content (especially lignin concentration) and reduced plant life span; these effects were related to senescence acceleration induced by the pollutant. Added N increased plant biomass production and improved nutritive quality by decreasing foliar fiber concentration. Interestingly, the effects of N supplementation depended on meteorological conditions and plant physiological activity. N supplementation counteracted the O(3)-induced senescence but did not modify the effects on nutritive quality. Nutritive quality and phenology should be considered in new definitions of the O(3) limits for the protection of herbaceous vegetation.

Abstract
Massive hemoptysis is an alarming event in which asphyxiation due to aspiration of blood is the main threat. The differential diagnosis taking into consideration a wide range of potential causes is required, and in 5% to 20% of cases, the reason for bleeding is never established. Hypoxemia and rebleeding are the main life-threatening complications. We describe the case of a 68-year-old man with no relevant medical history whose massive hemoptysis and complications were treated successfully by a multidisciplinary team.
