Abstract
We report on the observation of new properties of secondary cosmic rays Li, Be, and B measured in the rigidity (momentum per unit charge) range 1.9 GV to 3.3 TV with a total of 5.4×10^{6} nuclei collected by AMS during the first five years of operation aboard the International Space Station. The Li and B fluxes have an identical rigidity dependence above 7 GV and all three fluxes have an identical rigidity dependence above 30 GV with the Li/Be flux ratio of 2.0±0.1. The three fluxes deviate from a single power law above 200 GV in an identical way. This behavior of secondary cosmic rays has also been observed in the AMS measurement of primary cosmic rays He, C, and O but the rigidity dependences of primary cosmic rays and of secondary cosmic rays are distinctly different. In particular, above 200 GV, the secondary cosmic rays harden more than the primary cosmic rays.

Abstract
Previous studies have shown that GLABRA3 (AtGL3), a bHLH transcription factor, plays essential roles in anthocyanin biosynthesis and trichome formation in Arabidopsis thaliana. However, there have been no such studies of a homologue, BnGL3, from the closely related crop, Brassica napus. Here, we analysed the BnGL3-1 coding domain sequence from the B. napus cultivar QINYOU Seven, identified conserved protein domains and performed a phylogenetic analysis to elucidate its relationship with homologues form a range of plant species. When expressed in tobacco leaves as a fusion protein with green fluorescent protein, BnGL3-1 accumulated in the nucleus, consistent with its predicted function as a transcription factor. Ectopic expression of the BnGL3-1 gene in the A. thaliana gl3-3 mutant resulted in levels of anthocyanins and numbers of trichomes in true leaves that were higher than in wild-type plants. Moreover, overexpression of BnGL3-1 in gl3-3 compensated for the promotion and repression of genes involved in anthocyanin biosynthesis and trichome formation, respectively, that has been reported in gl3-3 young shoots and expanding true leaves. This study provides new insights into GL3 function in anthocyanin biosynthesis and trichome formation in crucifers, and represents a promising target for genetic manipulation of B. napus.

Abstract
We report the observation of new properties of primary cosmic rays He, C, and O measured in the rigidity (momentum/charge) range 2 GV to 3 TV with 90×10^{6} helium, 8.4×10^{6} carbon, and 7.0×10^{6} oxygen nuclei collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) during the first five years of operation. Above 60 GV, these three spectra have identical rigidity dependence. They all deviate from a single power law above 200 GV and harden in an identical way.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the functional connectivity (FC) of thalamic subdivisions in patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME). Resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data were acquired from 22 JME and 25 healthy controls. We first divided the thalamus into eight subdivisions by performing independent component analysis on tracking fibers and clustering thalamus-related FC maps. We then analyzed abnormal FC in each subdivision in JME compared with healthy controls, and we investigated their associations with clinical features. Eight thalamic sub-regions identified in the current study showed unbalanced thalamic FC in JME: decreased FC with the superior frontal gyrus and enhanced FC with the supplementary motor area in the posterior thalamus increased thalamic FC with the salience network (SN) and reduced FC with the default mode network (DMN). Abnormalities in thalamo-prefrontocortical networks might be related to the propagation of generalized spikes with frontocentral predominance in JME, and the network connectivity differences with the SN and DMN might be implicated in emotional and cognitive defects in JME. JME was also associated with enhanced FC among thalamic sub-regions and with the basal ganglia and cerebellum, suggesting the regulatory role of subcortical nuclei and the cerebellum on the thalamo-cortical circuit. Additionally, increased FC with the pallidum was positive related with the duration of disease. The present study provides emerging evidence of FC to understand that specific thalamic subdivisions contribute to the abnormalities of thalamic-cortical networks in JME. Moreover, the posterior thalamus could play a crucial role in generalized epileptic activity in JME.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the utility of pharyngeal pH monitoring which positive standard is Ryan index in diagnosis of laryngopharyngeal reflux disease. Methods: In a retrospective study, clinical data of 590 patients who had symptoms laryngopharyngeal reflux disease from February 2016 to March 2017 were analyzed. All patients were received electronic laryngoscopy, assessment of reflux symptom index(RSI) and reflux finding score(RFS), and pharyngeal pH monitoring. SPSS 19.0 software was used to analyze the date. Results: There were 94 patients whose Ryan index were positive(15.93%). Among the 94 patients, 70 were positive during upright, 12 during supine and 12 during both upright and supine. There were 40 patients(6.78%)with pH decline events related to symptoms, while those Ryan index were normal. There were 536(90.85%), 417(70.68%), 233(39.49%) and 117(19.83%) patients with pH<6.5, pH<6.0, pH<5.5 and pH<5.0 events respectively. The positive rate of RSI, RFS, RSI and RFS, RSI or RFS were 44.24%, 16.78%, 7.12%, 53.90% respectively. The RFS score in Ryan index positive group was higher than that in Ryan index negative group[(8.2±2.4) vs (4.0±2.9), u=5.424, P<0.05], while the RSI score in Ryan index positive group was not statistically different from that in Ryan index negative group[(11.3±6.2) vs (12.7±5.8), t=1.247, P=0.167]. Conclusions: Pharyngeal pH monitoring is an objective and non-invasive method which can reflect laryngopharyngeal reflux directly. However, with the Ryan index as a criterion for the diagnosis of laryngopharyngeal reflux disease, partial patients may be missed. Further studies are needed to obtain more accurate and objective laryngopharyngeal pH statistical index for diagnosis of laryngopharyngeal reflux disease.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the feasibility of iterative model reconstruction (IMR) combined with low tube voltage, low iodine load, and low iodine deliver rate in craniocervical computed tomography angiography (CTA). MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty patients were randomly divided into two groups (n=30 for each): group A: 120 kVp, 50 ml of iopromide at a flow rate of 5 ml/s; filtered back projection (FBP) reconstruction; group B: 80 kVp, 30 ml of iohexol at 4.5 ml/s; hybrid iterative reconstruction (HIR) for group B1 and IMR for group B2. CT attenuation values, image noise, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), subjective image quality, effective dose (ED), iodine load, and iodine delivery rate (IDR) were compared. RESULTS CT attenuation values of the arteries were higher in groups B1 and B2 than group A. The SNR and CNR were higher, while image noise was lower, for group B2 compared with groups B1 and A. The best subjective image quality was obtained with group B2. ED, iodine load, and IDR reduction of 69.6%, 51.4%, 27%, respectively, was obtained in group B compared with group A. CONCLUSION IMR combined with 80 kVp and 30 ml of iohexol at a flow rate of 4.5 ml/s for craniocervical CTA can reduce ED, iodine load, and IDR, while improving image quality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND KRAS mutations are prevalent in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) but its clinical implications remain to be determined. Continual profiling of KRAS mutations in patients is challenging, and the study aims to determine the potential use of urinary DNA in disease predictions. METHODS A total of 150 patients were recruited. To ascertain the clinical relevance of urinary DNA, matched tumor profiles were analyzed. Serial measurements were taken to gauge the reliability of the assay. These results were correlated to overall survival using the Kaplan-Meier estimate. RESULTS A good overall concordance of 93% (consolidated results from serial measurements) was achieved between tumor tissue and urinary DNA profiling. Of the discordant KRAS cases, we observed subsequent positive detection during monitoring and very low concentrations of mutant DNA. In addition, we noted that KRAS-positive patients detected using urinary DNA have good prognostic utility. Interestingly, we also observed that the trend is highly correlative of the rate of change in KRAS mutant DNA concentrations and the period of monitoring. CONCLUSIONS Urinary DNA offered a non-invasive approach to probe NSCLC dynamics, and in our study we showed that it had predictive capabilities for KRAS-positive patients. Serial monitoring of urinary samples showed that it had a predictive role in identifying patients with worse outcome.

Abstract
Previous preclinical modeling has demonstrated that antibodies targeting the programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-1) have activity in murine breast cancers (BC), and this activity is significantly enhanced when combined with phosphatidylserine (PS) targeting antibodies. This suggested that the addition of PS targeting antibodies could be capable of augmenting anti-tumorigenic properties of other checkpoint inhibitors and alternative immune activating therapies in BC. The ability of PS targeting antibodies to enhance the activity of anti-PD-1 therapy occurs in part through increasing tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs), boosting the Th1 immuno-profile, and the suppression of tumor promoting cytokines induced by anti-PD-1 therapy. PS normally resides in the inner leaflet of the plasma membrane in many types of cells. Conditions that incite cellular stress in the tumor microenvironment, such as ROS, hypoxia, and irradiation, promote PS externalization and exposure on tumor associated endothelial cells and tumor cells, where it is recognized by specific receptors, including members of TIM and TAM family. This PS recognition promotes an innate system driven immunosuppressive condition in part by promoting the recruitment of myeloid derived suppressor cells (MDSCs), M2-like macrophages, and suppressing dendritic cells maturation, while inducing anti-inflammatory cytokines. To identify additional immuno-therapeutic targets that may have activity when used in combination with PS targeting antibodies, we employed bioinformatics analysis on tumors from murine triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) treated with PS and PD-1 targeting antibodies, alone or in combination. Interestingly, expression of the lymphocyte activation gene 3 (LAG3) increased in each treatment arm, suggesting it may be a potential target for combinational therapy in breast cancers. To test this hypothesis, immune competent mice harboring the murine TNBC line E0771 were treated with a PS targeting antibody or a LAG3 targeting antibody as single agent or in combination. Our data demonstrate that while PS-blocking and anti-LAG3 therapies each have efficacy in E0771 as single agents, combinational treatment significantly improved growth inhibition and was capable of increasing TILs, including CD8 + and CD3 + T-cells, while reducing the population of MDSCs. Overall, our data suggest that LAG3 targeting may also represent a viable option for the treatment of breast cancer and that the addition of PS targeting antibodies to LAG3 therapy can effectively increase the anti-tumor and immune-activating effects mediated by additional T-cell checkpoint therapies.

Abstract
Salmonella enterica serovar Indiana, first described in 1955, is generally regarded as having a low frequency worldwide with outbreaks of gastroenteritis and abortions described in North America and Europe. In China, S. Indiana was first reported in 1984 and in the subsequent 71 surveys in 35 cities/municipalities from 18 provinces, 70% of which were after 2012, S. Indiana has been shown to have become widely prevalent in people, animals, food and the environment around abattoirs and meat processing facilities. The organism is now one of the most common serovars found in livestock and raw meat in China with S. Indiana isolates having high levels of drug resistance, especially against tetracyclines, quinolones, folate pathway inhibitors, phenicols, penicillins, monobactams and nitrofurans. Further, S. Indiana isolates that are concurrently resistant to ciprofloxacin and ceftriaxone/cefotaxime have emerged. Studies have suggested the high levels of multidrug resistance of S. Indiana might be associated with the presence of class 1 integrons and plasmids. Unfortunately, information on the high prevalence of S. Indiana and its extensive drug resistance in China has largely escaped international recognition as it largely appears in local reports written in Chinese. To address this situation, we reviewed all the available local Chinese and international publications on the organism in China and report our findings in this review.

Abstract
Knowledge of the rigidity dependence of the boron to carbon flux ratio (B/C) is important in understanding the propagation of cosmic rays. The precise measurement of the B/C ratio from 1.9 GV to 2.6 TV, based on 2.3 million boron and 8.3 million carbon nuclei collected by AMS during the first 5 years of operation, is presented. The detailed variation with rigidity of the B/C spectral index is reported for the first time. The B/C ratio does not show any significant structures in contrast to many cosmic ray models that require such structures at high rigidities. Remarkably, above 65 GV, the B/C ratio is well described by a single power law R^{Δ} with index Δ=-0.333±0.014(fit)±0.005(syst), in good agreement with the Kolmogorov theory of turbulence which predicts Δ=-1/3 asymptotically.

Abstract
A precision measurement by AMS of the antiproton flux and the antiproton-to-proton flux ratio in primary cosmic rays in the absolute rigidity range from 1 to 450 GV is presented based on 3.49×10^{5} antiproton events and 2.42×10^{9} proton events. The fluxes and flux ratios of charged elementary particles in cosmic rays are also presented. In the absolute rigidity range ∼60 to ∼500 GV, the antiproton p[over ¯], proton p, and positron e^{+} fluxes are found to have nearly identical rigidity dependence and the electron e^{-} flux exhibits a different rigidity dependence. Below 60 GV, the (p[over ¯]/p), (p[over ¯]/e^{+}), and (p/e^{+}) flux ratios each reaches a maximum. From ∼60 to ∼500 GV, the (p[over ¯]/p), (p[over ¯]/e^{+}), and (p/e^{+}) flux ratios show no rigidity dependence. These are new observations of the properties of elementary particles in the cosmos.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to determine whether epicardial adipose tissue volume (EATV), a new cardiometabolic risk factor, is associated with circadian changes of blood pressure (BP) in patients with newly diagnosed essential hypertension. Ninety patients with newly diagnosed essential hypertension underwent ambulatory blood pressure monitoring for 24 h. EATV was measured using cardiac computed tomography. These patients were categorized into three groups according to their BP patterns (group 1, n=46, dipper hypertension, also called normal pattern; group 2, n=24, non-dipper hypertension; group 3, n=20, anti-dipper hypertension; group 2 and 3 are also called abnormal pattern). Data were collected retrospectively and compared between hypertensive patients with normal pattern and abnormal pattern. The normal pattern hypertensive patient had significant lower mean EATV and BP ((EATV, 91.3±29.4 cm3) than those of abnormal pattern patients including group 2 (EATV, 116.2±31.06cm3, <0.01) and group 3 (EATV, 124.8±28.5cm3, P<0.01). Mean systolic BP over 24 h (BPs24) and mean diastolic BP over 24 h (BPd24) of group 1 (BPs24, 135.7 ± 12.6 mmHg; BPd24, 83.6 ± 10.6 mmHg) were significantly lower than those of group 2 (BPs24, 150.1± 17.6 mmHg, P<0.01; BPd24, 93.2 ± 16.5 mmHg, P<0.01) and group 3 (BPs24, 154.1 ± 16.6mmHg, P<0.01; BPd24, 93.8 ± 17.5 mmHg; P<0.01). Bivariate correlation analysis showed that correlation coefficient of EATV with abnormal blood pressure mode was 0.500 (p<0.001), partial correlation coefficient after adjustment for waist circumference and body mass index was 0.469 (p<0.001). When multivariate backward logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the correlation of BP pattern with EAT volume, it showed that the prevalence of abnormal BP pattern (non-dipper and anti-dipper BP pattern) increased by 1.54 times after adjusting for age and gender per additional 10 cm3 of EAT volume. Receiver operating characteristic curve for EAT alone indicated that the cutoff value of 95.17cm3 had the best performance in predicting abnormal BP pattern with a sensitivity of 75.0% and a specificity of 72.7%. EATV was elevated in newly diagnosed and untreated patients with non-dipper hypertension and anti-dipper hypertension. EATV measured by cardiac computed tomography can be used to indicate the increased risk of circadian rhythm of blood pressure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have shown that recovery of colonic transit is a major determinant of post-operative ileus and clinical recovery after gastrointestinal surgery. Prucalopride is a highly selective 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor-4 agonist with colonic pro-motility effects. AIM To evaluate the effect and safety of prucalopride on post-operative ileus and surgical outcomes after elective gastrointestinal surgery. METHODS In this phase II randomised clinical trial, 110 patients undergoing elective gastrointestinal surgery were randomised to either oral prucalopride (2 mg/day) (n = 55) or placebo (n = 55). Intervention was started 24 h after surgery and stopped after defecation or maximally at 7 days. The primary outcome was time to defecation. Secondary outcomes included time to first passage of flatus, tolerance of solid food, nasogastric tube reinsertion, post-operative length of stay, hospital readmission, overall cost, time to walk independently, surgical complications and inflammatory parameters. RESULTS Patients who received prucalopride had a shorter time to defecation (65.0 vs. 94.5 h, P = 0.001), passage of flatus (53.0 vs. 73.0 h, P < 0.001), and post-operative length of stay (7.0 vs. 8.0 days, P = 0.001) than controls. The number of patients with prolonged ileus (>5 days) (16.4% vs. 34.5%, P = 0.026) and the C-reactive protein level on post-operative day 5 (35.67 vs. 59.07 mg/L, P = 0.040) were lower in the prucalopride group. There was no significant difference in post-operative Clavien-Dindo grade III and IV complications (P = 0.606) between the groups. CONCLUSION Prucalopride is a safe and effective treatment to reduce post-operative ileus and systemic inflammation without affecting post-operative complications in patients undergoing elective gastrointestinal surgery. Abstract
The BET (bromodomain and extraterminal domain) bromodomain-containing proteins, such as BRD4, are highly promising targets for treating lymphoid and myeloid malignancies. They act to modulate the expression of multiple genes that control diverse cellular processes including proliferation, survival and differentiation that are consequentially disrupted by small-molecule BET bromodomain inhibitors such as JQ1. By assessing the impact of these inhibitors on normal mouse hematopoietic cells or their transformed counterparts, we establish definitively that their cytotoxic action in vitro and in vivo relies predominantly on the activation of BAX/BAK-dependent mitochondrial (intrinsic) apoptosis. In large part, this is triggered by marked upregulation of the BH3-only protein BIM when the BET inhibitors suppress miR-17-92, a key post-transcriptional repressor of BIM expression. Thus, our study strongly suggests that mutations that permit the evasion of apoptosis (for example, BCL2 overexpression, BIM inactivation) are likely to blunt the activity of the BET bromodomain inhibitors and should be anticipated when therapy resistance develops. Strikingly, we also found that certain normal hematopoietic cells, especially those of lymphoid origin, are as prone to apoptosis induced by the BET inhibitors as their transformed counterparts, indicating that their susceptibility to BET inhibitors did not arise from oncogenic transformation.

Abstract
Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a phospholipid that typically resides in the inner leaflet of the plasma membrane in many types of cells, including both tumor and tumor associated endothelial cells. Conditions that cause cellular stress, including those that occur from oxygen radicals, hypoxia, irradiation, and chemotherapy, cause a dramatic shift in PS localization. This change in localization results in PS shifting to the outer plasma membrane, allowing its recognition by components of the tumor microenvironment. Recognition of PS promotes an immunosuppressive environment that encourages tumor growth, in part by promoting the recruitment of myeloid derived suppressor cells, immature dendritic cells, and M2-like macrophages, in addition to inducing production of anti-inflammatory cytokines. Currently the chimeric PS-targeting antibody, bavituximab, is being used in combination with chemotherapies to treat patients with solid tumors in multiple late-stage clinical trials, where it is believe to help augment the efficacy of chemotherapeutics by blockade of PS-mediated immunosuppression and triggering an Fc-FcR mediated pro-inflammatory response in the tumor microenvironment. While the results with PS targeting therapies with chemotherapeutics are encouraging, the effectiveness of PS targeting therapies in conjunction with therapies towards immune checkpoint regulators remains largely unknown. To better understand the role of PS-targeting in breast cancers, and its effectiveness when used in combination with checkpoint inhibitors, immune competent mice harboring either EMT-6 or E0771 breast tumors were utilized. Treatments comprised PS targeting antibodies and an anti-PD1 antibody (to interrupt the PD-1/PD-L1 signaling axis) either alone or in combination with each other, and the effect on tumor growth and immune suppression determined. In both models, which showed differential sensitivity to therapy, the inclusion of PS targeting antibodies with the checkpoint blocker antibody had a significantly greater anti-tumor response than either single agent alone.

Abstract
Knowledge of the precise rigidity dependence of the helium flux is important in understanding the origin, acceleration, and propagation of cosmic rays. A precise measurement of the helium flux in primary cosmic rays with rigidity (momentum/charge) from 1.9 GV to 3 TV based on 50 million events is presented and compared to the proton flux. The detailed variation with rigidity of the helium flux spectral index is presented for the first time. The spectral index progressively hardens at rigidities larger than 100 GV. The rigidity dependence of the helium flux spectral index is similar to that of the proton spectral index though the magnitudes are different. Remarkably, the spectral index of the proton to helium flux ratio increases with rigidity up to 45 GV and then becomes constant; the flux ratio above 45 GV is well described by a single power law.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is the predominant pathological type and accounts for more than 80 % of esophageal cancer in China. The successful use of anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) treatment in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma provides the rationale for introducing anti-EGFR targeting treatment in ESCC. One of our prospective phase II clinical trials analyzed the efficacy of nimotuzumab, an anti-EGFR agent, combined with chemotherapy (paclitaxel and cisplatin) to treat unresectable ESCC. MATERIALS AND METHODS We analyzed the correlation of the clinical response with EGFR expression by immunohistochemical staining (IHC). RESULTS Totally 55 tumor samples were analyzed. 18/55 (32.7 %) cases were with high EGFR expression while the other 37/55 (67.3 %) cases were with low to moderate EGFR expression. The expression of EGFR was not related to gender, age, tumor location, tumor differentiation and clinical stage of disease. The objective response rate (ORR) in high EGFR expression group was 55.6 % (10/18) while that in low to moderate EGFR expression group was 54.1 % (20/37) (P = 0.57). Both the progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) in high EGFR expression group were much shorter than those in low to moderate EGFR expression group (PFS: 5.8 ± 0.5 vs. 11.0 ± 2.8 months, P = 0.007; OS: 9.7 ± 0.5 vs. 21.5 ± 1.5 months, P = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS The results showed that over-expression of EGFR was related to poor survival of ESCC. The over-expression of EGFR by IHC might not be an ideal predictive biomarker of nimotuzumab treatment. Other EGFR pathway-associated molecules should be analyzed in further studies.

Abstract
AIM Mesenteric hypertrophy has been recognized as an indicator of the complicated course of Crohn's disease. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the visceral fat area (VFA) is associated with postoperative clinical and endoscopic recurrence. METHOD Computed tomography was used to measure the subcutaneous fat area and VFA, and the mesenteric fat index (MFI) was defined as the ratio of the VFA to the subcutaneous fat area. Associations between body mass index, subcutaneous fat area, VFA and MFI and postoperative clinical and endoscopic recurrence were investigated. RESULTS The factors associated with postoperative endoscopic recurrence at 6 months after surgery were a high VFA value (P = 0.019) and MFI values above the median (P = 0.008). VFA values were significantly correlated with endoscopic recurrence (r = 0.895, P = 0.040) and endoscopic lesions (r = 0.617, P < 0.0001). Additionally, MFI values correlated well with endoscopic recurrence (r = 0.918, P = 0.02) and endoscopic scores (r = 0.584, P < 0.0001). Multivariate analysis indicated that VFA values above the median (hazard ratio 2.63, 95% CI 1.03-6.74) were predictive of postoperative clinical recurrence in Crohn's disease. CONCLUSION A high VFA value is associated with postoperative recurrence of Crohn's disease and has clinical implications with respect to optimizing prophylaxis for each individual. However, further studies are needed to confirm the predictive role of this biomarker in a different data set.

Abstract
We present a measurement of the cosmic ray (e^{+}+e^{-}) flux in the range 0.5 GeV to 1 TeV based on the analysis of 10.6 million (e^{+}+e^{-}) events collected by AMS. The statistics and the resolution of AMS provide a precision measurement of the flux. The flux is smooth and reveals new and distinct information. Above 30.2 GeV, the flux can be described by a single power law with a spectral index γ=-3.170±0.008(stat+syst)±0.008(energy scale).

Abstract
AIM Loop ileostomies are widely used in colorectal surgery to reduce the consequences of distal anastomotic failure. The optimal surgical technique for their closure has yet not been defined. A meta-analysis was performed to compare the outcome after stapled or hand sutured ileostomy closure. METHOD An electronic literature search of EMBASE, PubMed and the Cochrane Library was undertaken to identify studies reporting stapled and hand sutured ileostomy closure. End-points included postoperative small bowel obstruction (SBO), anastomotic leakage, wound infection, overall postoperative complications, operation time, hospital stay and surgery-related cost. RESULTS Fourteen studies including 5084 patients were identified. Meta-analysis showed that stapled closure was associated with a lower rate of SBO overall (OR = 0.56, P < 0.00001) and early (within 30 days of closure) SBO (OR = 0.51, P < 0.00001). This difference persisted for direct ileostomy closure (OR = 0.62, P = 0.02) or closure with bowel resection and hand sewn anastomosis (OR = 0.44, P < 0.00001). Stapled closure required a shorter inpatient stay (mean difference -1.22, P < 0.0001) and operating time (mean difference -11.21, P = 0.01). No significant difference was noted between the two techniques in terms of anastomotic leakage, wound infection, overall complications or cost. CONCLUSION Stapled side-to-side anastomosis is associated with fewer complications, especially SBO, than hand sewn ileostomy closure by direct suture or resection and anastomosis. It is quicker to perform and associated with fewer postoperative bowel obstructions.

Abstract
UNLABELLED In this study, we developed and validated a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay for Salmonella detection targeting bcfD gene, a conserved fimbrial operon gene existing in Salmonella. The Salmonella LAMP assay we developed successfully amplified 44 Salmonella strains (14 standard strains and 30 clinical isolates), but none of 9 non-Salmonella standard strains (Proteus mirabilis, Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Shigella flexneri, Shigella sonnei, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Campylobacter jejuni and Vibrio parahemolyticus). The detection limit was 5 CFU of Salmonella pure culture or 200 CFU of artificially spiked faeces per reaction system (equivalent to 5000 CFU g(-1) of faeces), and this method could directly detect Salmonella in chicken faeces free of pre-enrichment in a reaction time of 25 min. Our experiments show that the LAMP method we developed is a rapid, sensitive, specific and practical method for Salmonella detection. The Salmonella LAMP assay can potentially serve as new on-site diagnostics in the food and agricultural industries. Abstract
Precision measurements by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on the International Space Station of the primary cosmic-ray electron flux in the range 0.5 to 700 GeV and the positron flux in the range 0.5 to 500 GeV are presented. The electron flux and the positron flux each require a description beyond a single power-law spectrum. Both the electron flux and the positron flux change their behavior at ∼30 GeV but the fluxes are significantly different in their magnitude and energy dependence. Between 20 and 200 GeV the positron spectral index is significantly harder than the electron spectral index. The determination of the differing behavior of the spectral indices versus energy is a new observation and provides important information on the origins of cosmic-ray electrons and positrons.

Abstract
A precision measurement by AMS of the positron fraction in primary cosmic rays in the energy range from 0.5 to 500 GeV based on 10.9 million positron and electron events is presented. This measurement extends the energy range of our previous observation and increases its precision. The new results show, for the first time, that above ∼200 GeV the positron fraction no longer exhibits an increase with energy.

Abstract
SEW2871, a selective sphingosine-1-phosphate type 1 receptor (S1P1) agonist, has been shown to be effective in protecting kidneys against ischaemia-reperfusion injury by reducing CD4(+) T cell infiltration in mice. However, the effects of SEW2871 on colitis remain unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of SEW2871 on established colitis in interleukin (IL)-10 gene-deficient (IL-10(-/-)) mice, a murine model of Crohn's disease (CD). SEW2871 was administered by gavage at a dose of 20 mg/kg/day for 2 weeks to IL-10(-/-) mice. Severity of colitis, serum amyloid A, tissue myeloperoxidase (MPO), T cells in blood and colon lamina propria (LP) and proinflammatory cytokine productions were evaluated. Furthermore, the phospho-signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT)-3 (p-STAT-3) expression in lymphocytes isolated from colon LP was also assessed. The 2-week administration of SEW2871 ameliorated established colitis in IL-10(-/-) mice, associated with a reduction of serum amyloid A concentration, a decreased colon MPO concentration, a depletion of the peripheral CD4(+) CD45(+) T cells and a reduction of the homing of T cells into colon LP. Moreover, typical cytokines of T helper type 1 (Th1) and Th17 cells and p-STAT-3 expression were also suppressed by SEW2871 treatment. SEW2871 treatment ameliorates established experimental colitis in IL-10(-/-) mice, which may provide a new therapeutic approach for human CD therapy.

Sci. 94: 223–241. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has a long history of clinical practice, and its own theoretical framework focused on functions at the whole-body level. However, due to cultural differences, TCM has not been fully recognized in Western countries. With the recent development of the theory of whole-body systems biology and “-omics”, there is a new opportunity to study TCM and to close the gap between TCM and Western medicine, because of the similarity in the theoretical foundations between TCM and whole-body systems biology. The uniqueness of TCM theory and practice is the approach to maintain and restore the body balance as a whole with no or little unfavourable side effects. Recent studies have also shown that Chinese herbs used as feed additives can modulate nutritional metabolism, immune responses, and intestinal health of food-producing animals, demonstrating good potential as substitutes for dietary antibiotics. Nonetheless, some issues need to be addressed before Chinese herbs can reach their full application. This article has critically reviewed recent progresses in scientific research of Chinese herbs as feed additives and their potential to replace dietary antibiotics. Possible challenges in future application for swine and poultry production are also discussed.

Abstract
AIMS To identify a fast, economic and reliable method for preselecting lactic acid-producing bacterial (LAB) isolates to control enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC). METHODS AND RESULTS Two assays with porcine intestinal epithelial IPEC-J2 cells or Caenorhabditis elegans for selecting effective probiotic candidates were compared. Both assays were based on measuring death of cells or worms caused by ETEC strain JG280. Six of 13 LAB isolates showed ≥50% protection in each assay, among which only four isolates (≥50% protection) were consistently selected by both assays. Isolate CL9 (Lactobacillus reuteri) was further studied. It reduced gene expression of estA, estB and elt in JG280 in both assays. Furthermore, the isolate protected IPEC-J2 and C. elegans from cell and worm death caused by STa, STb or LT enterotoxin expressed in E. coli DH5α. CL9 also promoted host defensive responses by decreasing IL-8 and increasing IL-10 production in IPEC-J2 cells and expression of antimicrobial peptide genes clec-60, clec-85 in C. elegans. CONCLUSIONS Caenorhabditis elegans is useful for preselecting probiotic candidates to control ETEC after initial screening with IPEC-J2 cells. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY A combination of IPEC-J2 cell and C. elegans assays can improve the effectiveness in preselecting probiotic candidates.

Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency are increasingly being recognized in the general population over the last few decades. However, a number of other disorders have now been linked to vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency, including asthma and COPD. The aim of this study was to evaluate the evidence on the effect of vitamin D on asthma and COPD. We searched electronic databases including SCI, EMBASE, Ovid, and PubMed. Reviewers working independently and in duplicate extracted study characteristics, quality, and the outcomes. The weighted mean differences across trials and random-effect meta-analysis were used to pool the relative risks (RR). This is the first meta-analysis about the risk of vitamin D deficiency for asthma and COPD. Ten studies were available for this meta-analysis and systematic review. The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was significantly greater among cases than control subjects [RR=1.59, 95%CI=1.07-2.36, 488/812 (60%) vs 278/875 (32%)] for asthma. However, vitamin D insufficiency was not significantly associated with asthma [RR=1.09, 95%CI=0.91-1.30, 702/996 (70%) vs 665/1016 (65%)]. Moreover, studies failed to demonstrate that COPD patients had an increased risk for vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency compared to controls (RR=0.89, 95%CI=0.63-1.25). Vitamin D deficiency was associated with a significant decrease in lung function in asthmatic children. Vitamin D deficiency was highly prevalent in asthma patients, and vitamin D status was associated with lung function. COPD cannot be considered as completely free of vitamin D deficiency.
