Abstract
Thermal treatments are a valid clinical option in the management of several solid tumors. The difficulties to perform an accurate prediction improve the selectivity of the treatment effects represent the main hurdles in the spread of these techniques. Among other solutions, thermometric techniques are gaining acceptance in monitoring the effects of thermal treatments because they provide a clear end-point to obtain the complete removal of cancer without damaging the surrounding healthy tissue. This paper proposes a custom needle-like probe made of carbon fibers to embed seven fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. This tool aims at a multiple points monitoring the tissue temperature during the thermal procedures, streamlining the FBG sensors insertion within the organ. After the description of the probe manufacturing, we reported the calibration of the seven sensors embedded within the probe, their step response, and the feasibility assessment of the probe for temperature monitoring during laser ablation on animal model (both in vivo and ex vivo). Results show that the proposed probe is easily maneuverable by the clinician, the sensors have a linear response with the temperature and a short step response; moreover, the probe allows measuring the temperature in seven points of the tissue; finally, it can be used during CTand MR-guided procedures without causing any artifact to the images. Thanks to these features the probe may be an useful solution to improve the safety and the outcomes of minimally invasive thermal ablation procedures, so to spread these procedures in the clinical field.

Abstract
Interferon-γ (IFN-γ) is known for its important antiviral activity and other immunomodulatory actions. In in vitro studies, this cytokine has also been involved in the control of metallothionein (MT) synthesis. MT is a low molecular weight protein comprised of several isoforms called MT-I to MT-IV; of these, MT-1+11 are widely expressed, whereas MT-III and MT-IV are rather tissue specific. In the present report, we have studied in vivo the role of IFN-γ for a normal liver and brain MT-I+II response to immobilization stress and to an inflammatory process caused by bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS, endotoxin), using mice carrying a null mutation in the IFN-γ receptor gene (IFN-γR-/-). Liver MT-I mRNA and MT-(I+II) protein levels during stress of IFN-γR-/- mice were similar to those of the two parental mouse strains used to generate them, namely C57BU6 and 129/Sv mice, and that of the F1 C57BU6 x 129/Sv offspring mice. In contrast, liver MT response to LPS was significantly higher in the IFN-γR-/- mice than in the other strains. MT-I+II response to LPS was also higher in IFN-γR-/- mice in medulla plus pons and tended to in hypothalamus, hippocampus, and cerebellum, but not in the remaining brain. These results suggest that a role of IFN-γ on liver and brain MT-I+II response to stress is unlikely, but that this cytokine exerts an inhibitory effect on the signaling pathways activated by LPS involved in MT-I+II regulation. In situ hybridization analysis for MT-I and MT-III mRNAs of control mice revealed significant effects of the functional IFN-γ deficiency on MT-I but not MT-III mRNA levels in the dentate gyrus and the habenula, while no effects were observed in the remaining brain areas studied.

Abstract
Background Exacerbated postparturient insulin resistance (IR) has been associated with several pathologic conditions in dairy cattle. Oxidative stress (OS) plays a causative role in IR in humans, and an association, but not direct relationship, between OS and IR recently has been reported in transition dairy cattle. Hypothesis Supplementation with antioxidants shortly before calving improves glucose tolerance after parturition in dairy cattle. Animals Ten late‐pregnant Holstein cows entering their 2nd to 5th lactation. Methods Randomized placebo‐controlled trial: 15 ± 2 days before expected calving, the treatment group received an injection of DL‐alpha‐tocopheryl acetate at a dosage of 6 mg/kg body weight (BW) and 0.06 mg/kg BW of sodium selenite, and the control group was injected with isotonic saline. During the first week after calving, both groups underwent glucose tolerance testing (0.25 g glucose/kg BW). Commercial assays were used to quantify the concentrations of glucose, insulin, nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), beta‐hydroxybutyrate, and markers of redox status in blood. Data were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U‐test (α = 0.05). Results Supplemented cows showed a lower risk for OS, as reflected by a lower OS index (P = .036), different areas under the curve for the concentrations of glucose (P < .01), insulin (P = .043), and NEFA (P = .041), more rapid elimination rates (P = .080, <.01 and .047 respectively), and shorter half‐lives (P = .040, <.01 and .032) of these metabolites. Conclusions and Clinical Importance Supplementation with antioxidants before calving resulted in greater insulin sensitivity after calving, thereby suggesting the role of OS in the development of IR in cattle and the potential benefits of antioxidant supplementation in minimizing the consequences of negative energy balance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Access to cancer care is a significant concern for Canadians. Prolonged delays between cancer diagnosis and treatment have been associated with anxiety, stress, and perceived powerlessness for patients and their family members. Longer wait times can also be associated with poorer prognosis, although the evidence is inconclusive. Here, we report national wait times for radiation therapy and surgery for localized prostate cancer (pca) and the effect of wait time on patient perceptions of their care. RESULTS Treatment wait times showed substantial interprovincial variation. The longest 90th percentile wait times for radiation therapy and surgery were, respectively, 40 days and 105 days. In all provinces, waits for radiation therapy were longer for pca patients than for patients with breast, colorectal, or lung cancer. In the focus groups and interviews conducted with 47 men treated for pca, many participants did not perceive that wait times for treatment were prolonged. Those who experienced delays between diagnosis and treatment voiced issues with a lack of communication about when they would receive treatment and a lack of support or information to make an informed decision about treatment. Minimizing treatment delays was an aspect of the cancer journey that participants would like to change because of the stress it caused. CONCLUSIONS Although wait time statistics are useful, a review of cancer control in Canada cannot be considered complete unless an effort is made to give voice to the experiences of individuals with cancer. The findings presented here are intended to provide a snapshot of national care delivery for localized pca and to identify opportunities for improvement in clinical practice.
