Salmon subsidize an escape from a size spectrum

A general rule in ecology is that the abundance of species or individuals in communities sharing a common energy source decreases with increasing body size. However, external energy inputs in the form of resource subsidies can modify this size spectrum relationship. Here, we provide the first test of how a marine resource subsidy can affect size spectra of terrestrial communities, based on energy derived from Pacific salmon carcasses affecting a forest soil community beside streams in western Canada. Using both species-based and individual approaches, we found size structuring in this forest soil community, and transient community-wide doubling of standing biomass in response to energy pulses from Pacific salmon carcasses. One group of species were clear outliers in the middle of the size spectrum relationship: larval calliphorid and dryomyzid flies, which specialize on salmon carcasses, and which showed a tenfold increase in biomass in their size class when salmon were available. Thus, salmon subsidize their escape from the size spectrum. These results suggest that using a size-based perspective of resource subsidies can provide new insights into the structure and functioning of food webs.

Maternal and preterm fetal sheep responses to dexmedetomidine

BACKGROUND

The α(2) adrenergic receptor agonist dexmedetomidine has some unique pharmacologic properties that could benefit pregnant patients (and their fetuses) when they require sedation, analgesia, and/or anesthesia during pregnancy. The purpose of the present study was to delineate maternal and fetal responses to an intravenous infusion of dexmedetomidine.

METHODS

This study was conducted on surgically-recovered preterm sheep instrumented for physiologic recording and blood sampling. Maternal and fetal cardiovascular and blood gas parameters and fetal cerebral oxygenation levels were recorded before, during, and after 3h of dexmedetomidine infusion to the ewe at a rate of 1 μg/kg/h.

RESULTS

Drug infusion produced overt sedation but no apparent respiratory depression as evidenced by stable maternal arterial blood gases; fetal blood gases were also stable. The one blood parameter to change was serum glucose, By the end of the 3-h infusion, glucose increased from 49±10 to 104±33mg/dL in the ewe and from 22±3 to 48±16mg/dL in the fetus; it declined post-drug exposure but remained elevated compared to the starting levels (maternal, 63±12mg/dL, P=0.0497; and fetal, 24±4mg/dL, P=0.012). With respect to cardiovascular status, dexmedetomidine produced a decrease in maternal blood pressure and heart rate with fluctuations in uterine blood flow but had no discernable effect on fetal heart rate or mean arterial pressure. Likewise, maternal drug infusion had no effect on fetal cerebral oxygenation, as measured by in utero near-infrared spectroscopy.

CONCLUSIONS

Using a clinically-relevant dosing regimen, intravenous infusion of dexmedetomidine produced significant maternal sedation without altering fetal physiologic status. Results from this initial acute assessment support the conduct of further studies to determine if dexmedetomidine has clinical utility for sedation and pain control during pregnancy.

Impacts of salmon on riparian plant diversity

The study of natural gradients in nutrient subsidies between ecosystems allows for predictions of how changes in one system can affect biodiversity in another. We performed a large-scale empirical test of the role of Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) in structuring riparian plant communities. A comparison of 50 watersheds in the remote Great Bear Rainforest of British Columbia's central coast in Canada shows that salmon influence nutrient loading to plants,shifting plant communities toward nutrient-rich species, which in turn decreases plant diversity.These effects are mediated by interactions between salmon density and the physical characteristics of watersheds. Predicting how salmon affect terrestrial ecosystems is central to conservation plans that aim to better integrate ecosystem values into resource management.

Sea to sky: impacts of residual salmon-derived nutrients on estuarine breeding bird communities

Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) returning to streams around the North Pacific Rim provide a nutrient subsidy to these ecosystems. While many species of animals feed directly on salmon carcasses each autumn, salmon-derived nutrients can also be stored in coastal habitats throughout the year. The effects of this storage legacy on vertebrates in other seasons are not well understood, especially in estuaries, which can receive a large portion of post-spawning salmon nutrients. We examine the effects of residual salmon-derived nutrients, forest habitats and landscape features on summer breeding birds in estuary forests. We compared models containing environmental variables and combined chum (Oncorhynchus keta) and pink (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) salmon biomass to test predictions concerning bird density and diversity. We discovered that total bird, insectivore, golden-crowned kinglet and Pacific wren densities and Shannon's diversity in the summer were strongly predicted by salmon biomass in the autumn. For most metrics, this relationship approaches an asymptote beyond 40 000 kg of salmon biomass. Foliage height diversity, watershed catchment area and estuary area were also important predictors of avian communities. Our study suggests that the legacy of salmon nutrients influences breeding bird density and diversity in estuaries that vary across a wide gradient of spawning salmon biomass.

Sea louse infection of juvenile sockeye salmon in relation to marine salmon farms on Canada's west coast

BACKGROUND

Pathogens are growing threats to wildlife. The rapid growth of marine salmon farms over the past two decades has increased host abundance for pathogenic sea lice in coastal waters, and wild juvenile salmon swimming past farms are frequently infected with lice. Here we report the first investigation of the potential role of salmon farms in transmitting sea lice to juvenile sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka).

METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS

We used genetic analyses to determine the origin of sockeye from Canada's two most important salmon rivers, the Fraser and Skeena; Fraser sockeye migrate through a region with salmon farms, and Skeena sockeye do not. We compared lice levels between Fraser and Skeena juvenile sockeye, and within the salmon farm region we compared lice levels on wild fish either before or after migration past farms. We matched the latter data on wild juveniles with sea lice data concurrently gathered on farms. Fraser River sockeye migrating through a region with salmon farms hosted an order of magnitude more sea lice than Skeena River populations, where there are no farms. Lice abundances on juvenile sockeye in the salmon farm region were substantially higher downstream of farms than upstream of farms for the two common species of lice: Caligus clemensi and Lepeophtheirus salmonis, and changes in their proportions between two years matched changes on the fish farms. Mixed-effects models show that position relative to salmon farms best explained C. clemensi abundance on sockeye, while migration year combined with position relative to salmon farms and temperature was one of two top models to explain L. salmonis abundance.

CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE

This is the first study to demonstrate a potential role of salmon farms in sea lice transmission to juvenile sockeye salmon during their critical early marine migration. Moreover, it demonstrates a major migration corridor past farms for sockeye that originated in the Fraser River, a complex of populations that are the subject of conservation concern.

Sperm competition and sex change: a comparative analysis across fishes

Current theory to explain the adaptive significance of sex change over gonochorism predicts that female-first sex change could be adaptive when relative reproductive success increases at a faster rate with body size for males than for females. A faster rate of reproductive gain with body size can occur if larger males are more effective in controlling females and excluding competitors from fertilizations. The most simple consequence of this theoretical scenario, based on sexual allocation theory, is that natural breeding sex ratios are expected to be female biased in female-first sex changers, because average male fecundity will exceed that of females. A second prediction is that the intensity of sperm competition is expected to be lower in female-first sex-changing species because larger males should be able to more completely monopolize females and therefore reduce male-male competition during spawning. Relative testis size has been shown to be an indicator of the level of sperm competition, so we use this metric to examine evolutionary responses to selection from postcopulatory male-male competition. We used data from 116 comparable female-first sex-changing and nonhermaphroditic (gonochoristic) fish species to test these two predictions. In addition to cross-species analyses we also controlled for potential phylogenetic nonindependence by analyzing independent contrasts. As expected, breeding sex ratios were significantly more female biased in female-first sex-changing than nonhermaphroditic taxa. In addition, males in female-first sex changers had significantly smaller relative testis sizes that were one-fifth the size of those of nonhermaphroditic species, revealing a new evolutionary correlate of female-first sex change. These results, which are based on data from a wide range of taxa and across the same body-size range for either mode of reproduction, provide direct empirical support for current evolutionary theories regarding the benefits of female-first sex change.

Inclusion of an S-nitrosylating agent in the insufflating gas does not alter gastric activity in rats following pneumoperitoneum

BACKGROUND

We have previously shown that mixing the S-nitrosylating agent ethyl nitrite with carbon dioxide can attenuate pneumoperitoneum-induced decreases in splanchnic blood flow, but it was unclear if this agent would alter gastric function. This question was answered using rats by assessing gastric emptying and gastrointestinal transit times following gavage with radioactive chromium.

METHODS

There were five experimental groups: absolute control, anesthesia control, and carbon dioxide alone or with 100 or 300 parts per million ethyl nitrite. The period of insufflation was 1 h, and all animals were euthanized 6.5 h after chromium administration.

RESULTS

The mean amount of radioactivity remaining in the stomach ranged between 16% and 27% of the total administered; these differences were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Modest differences in chromium distribution were identified in the gastrointestinal tract, but for all treatments, the peak amount of radioactivity was located in the distal portion. Location of the peak, expressed as a percentage of total tract length, varied between 70% and 85% (p = 0.366).

CONCLUSIONS

This study found no adverse effect of ethyl nitrite on postoperative gastric emptying or gastrointestinal transit time following pneumoperitoneum. The findings support continued assessment of the clinical utility of ethyl nitrite in the setting of laparoscopic surgery.

Life history evolution in cichlids 1: revisiting the evolution of life histories in relation to parental care

Empirical links between egg size and duration of parental care in fishes have generated a considerable amount of theory concerning life history evolution. However, to date, this link has not been investigated in relation to other important life-history traits such as clutch size and body size, or while controlling for shared ancestry between species. We provide the first phylogenetically based tests using a database with information on egg size, clutch size, body size and care duration in cichlid fishes (Cichlidae). Multiple regression analyses, based on independent contrasts on both the species and the genus level, showed that clutch size is the variable most closely related to duration of care. This pattern appeared to be driven by post-hatch care relationships. Our results show that, contrary to expectation, there is no positive link between egg size and care duration in Cichlidae. Instead, greater reproductive output through increased clutch size investment appears to have coevolved with greater care of offspring. We suggest that re-evaluation of the generality of current models of the evolution of egg size under parental care in fishes is needed.

Prion diseases and the gastrointestinal tract

The gastrointestinal (GI) tract plays a central role in the pathogenesis of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies. These are human and animal diseases that include bovine spongiform encephalopathy, scrapie and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. They are uniformly fatal neurological diseases, which are characterized by ataxia and vacuolation in the central nervous system. Although they are known to be caused by the conversion of normal cellular prion protein to its infectious conformational isoform (PrPsc) the process by which this isoform is propagated and transported to the brain remains poorly understood. M cells, dendritic cells and possibly enteroendocrine cells are important in the movement of infectious prions across the GI epithelium. From there, PrPsc propagation requires B lymphocytes, dendritic cells and follicular dendritic cells of Peyer's patches. The early accumulation of the disease-causing agent in the plexuses of the enteric nervous system supports the contention that the autonomic nervous system is important in disease transmission. This is further supported by the presence of PrPsc in the ganglia of the parasympathetic and sympathetic nerves that innervate the GI tract. Additionally, the lymphoreticular system has been implicated as the route of transmission from the gut to the brain. Although normal cellular prion protein is found in the enteric nervous system, its role has not been characterized. Further research is required to understand how the cellular components of the gut wall interact to propagate and transmit infectious prions to develop potential therapies that may prevent the progression of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies.

The sheep and cattle Peyer's patch as a site of B-cell development

In sheep and cattle, the ileal Peyer's patch (PP), which extends one-two meters along the terminal small intestine, is a primary lymphoid organ of B-cell development. B-cell diversity in the ileal PP is thought to develop by combinatorial mechanisms, gene conversion and/or point mutation. These species also have jejunal PP that function more like secondary lymphoid tissues concerned with mucosal immune reactions. These two types of PP differ significantly in their histology, ontogeny and the extent of lymphocyte traffic. The prenatal development of follicles in the PP begins first in the jejunum during the middle of gestation and then in the ileum during late gestation. B-cells proliferate rapidly in the ileal PP follicle; up to five percent of these cells survive while the majority dies by apoptosis, perhaps driven by the influence of environmental antigen and/or self-antigen. The surviving cells migrate from the ileal PP and populate the peripheral B-cell compartment. By adolescence, the ileal PP has involuted but the function of jejunal PP, compatible with a role as secondary lymphoid organ, continues throughout life. In this review, we focus on the development of PP as a site of B-cell repertoire generation, positive and negative B-cell selection, and the differences between ileal PP and jejunal PP.

Antibody repertoire development in the sheep

The model of immunoglobulin (Ig) repertoire diversification in sheep has evolved dramatically in recent years. A process thought to involve the rearrangement of a very limited number of variable (V), diversity (D) and joining (J) segments followed by intense, antigen (Ag)-independent, somatic hypermutation is now known to be less recombinatorially restrictive and to involve fewer mutational events. Although mutation rates are now lower than previously thought, the somatic hypermutation process itself is no less critical to the development of the primary Ig repertoire in sheep. Recent studies have shown that those B cells that fail to mutate will die via apoptosis. Much of the V(D)J rearrangement is thought to occur in the fetal liver and spleen prior to development of the ileal Peyer's patch (PP) at approximately day 100 of gestation. Although de novo Ig rearrangement likely does not occur in the ileal PP, this tissue is a site of massive B-cell proliferation, selection and Ig diversification through somatic hypermutation.
