Measurements of Elliptic and Triangular Flow in High-Multiplicity 3He+Au Collisions at √(s(NN))=200 GeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2015; 115:142301. Abstract
We present the first measurement of elliptic (v(2)) and triangular (v(3)) flow in high-multiplicity (3)He+Au collisions at √(s(NN))=200 GeV. Two-particle correlations, where the particles have a large separation in pseudorapidity, are compared in (3)He+Au and in p+p collisions and indicate that collective effects dominate the second and third Fourier components for the correlations observed in the (3)He+Au system. The collective behavior is quantified in terms of elliptic v(2) and triangular v(3) anisotropy coefficients measured with respect to their corresponding event planes. The v(2) values are comparable to those previously measured in d+Au collisions at the same nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy. Comparisons with various theoretical predictions are made, including to models where the hot spots created by the impact of the three (3)He nucleons on the Au nucleus expand hydrodynamically to generate the triangular flow. The agreement of these models with data may indicate the formation of low-viscosity quark-gluon plasma even in these small collision systems.

Compact panicle architecture is detrimental for growth as well as sucrose synthase activity of developing rice kernels. FUNCTIONAL PLANT BIOLOGY : FPB 2015; 42:875-887. [PMID: 32480730 DOI: 10.1071/fp14363] [Citation(s) in RCA: 17] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.9] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 12/30/2014] [Accepted: 05/29/2015] [Indexed: 06/11/2023]
Abstract
The increase of spikelet number in the panicles of modern super rice has made the architecture compact, as the extra spikelets are accommodated mostly on secondary branches than on primary branches. However, the grain yield did not improve because of poor grain filling, which was more visible in the basal spikelets than apical spikelets. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of the compactness and positional difference of spikelets in the panicle on grain filling by comparing the activity and genetic expression of starch synthesising enzymes in the developing kernels of lax-(Upahar and CR3856-45-11-2-7-2-5 (CR-45)) and compact-(Mahalaxmi and CR3856-29-14-2-1-1-1 (CR-29)) panicle cultivars. Upahar and Mahalaxmi are genetically related, whereas CR-45 and CR-29 are recombinant inbred lines. The grain carbohydrate concentration and activity of sucrose synthase (SUS) enzyme were estimated during the active period of grain filling. Further, expression of isoforms of SUS, ADP glucose pyrophosphorylase (APL and APS for large and small units respectively) and starch synthase (SS and GBSS for soluble and granule bound starch synthases respectively) were also assayed through PCR studies. The genotype approach used revealed grain SUS activity and starch concentration high and sugar concentration low in the lax- compared with compact-panicle cultivars and in the apical spikelets compared with basal ones. The margin of variation between apical and basal spikelets was higher in the compact- than the lax-panicle cultivars. Genetic expression of most of the isoforms of the enzymes was higher in the lax- than the compact-panicle cultivars as seen in RT-PCR studies. A quantitative appraisal of transcript levels of isoforms in the qRT-PCR identified greater expression of SUS3 in the basal spikelets of Upahar than that in Mahalaxmi and in CR-45 over CR-29, most prominently during the active period of grain filling. We conclude that proximal location as well as increased density of spikelets on panicles affected SUS3 expression in the basal spikelets. The metabolic dominance of a spikelet in rice panicle is dependent on the expression of the genes for different isoforms of starch synthesising enzymes, but the expression of SUS3 could be more specific than the others. SUS3 expression is most active during grain filling of the lax-panicle cultivars, but its dominance is reduced significantly in the kernels of the compact-panicle cultivars.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is crucial to preserve the renal parenchyma in a solitary renoureteric system, especially when associated with VUR and/or elevated bladder pressures. AIM The present study examined the effect of retaining the refluxing lower ureteral stump of a non-functioning renal unit (during nephrectomy) as a stoma to preserve contralateral renal function. STUDY DESIGN Twelve children with various uropathologies (six with PUV, three with primary VUR, and three with neurogenic bladder) and a solitary functioning kidney were retrospectively analysed. In each, besides the relevant investigations and specific management, nephrectomy was performed for a non-functioning kidney with recurrent UTI (10/12) or hypertension (2/12), and the ipsilateral distal ureteric stump was exteriorised as a refluxing stoma. Antimicrobial prophylaxis was given to those with VUR into the solitary kidney (9/12). All were on strict follow-up at a dedicated paediatric nephrourology clinic with serial clinical, biochemical and radiological surveillance. RESULTS The mean age at presentation and surgery was 19.7 months (range 0.5-96) and 30.5 months (range 3-100), respectively. Recurrent UTI (10/12) and acute renal failure (8/12) were common presentations; 2/12 were hypertensive. The initial serum creatinine ranged from 0.3 to 7.2 (mean 2.3) mg/dl. Of the solitary functioning kidneys with VUR (9/12), seven had Grade 5 VUR and six had renal cortical scars. The stoma served as an intermittent vent (9/12), for CIC (4/12) or for both purposes (3/12). Although all were Grade 5 refluxing ureters, 3/12 stomas remained dry. At a mean follow-up of 30 months (12-48), 9/12 were well and 3/12 were in end-stage renal disease. None had a UTI after the procedure. VUR resolved in five ureters that sub-served the contralateral solitary kidney. Serial DMSA renal cortical scans showed no scarring in four children, non-progressive scars in three and new scars in two. At the last follow-up, four (one dry, three leaking) were being used for CIC, four (one dry, three leaking) had been closed and four (one dry, three leaking) were retained until resolution of contralateral reflux/non-progression of scarring (three) or for possible CIC in the future (one). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION Retaining the refluxing lower ureteral stump of a non-functioning kidney as a cutaneous stoma provided a vent and an alternative channel for CIC of the bladder (Figure). Subsequently, fewer UTI seemed to protect the contralateral solitary functioning kidney, particularly in those with associated VUR. In this preliminary study, the procedure was simple and the stoma was well accepted by patients and parents.

Abstract
We present azimuthal angular correlations between charged hadrons and energy deposited in calorimeter towers in central d+Au and minimum bias p+p collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV. The charged hadron is measured at midrapidity |η|<0.35, and the energy is measured at large rapidity (-3.7<η<-3.1, Au-going direction). An enhanced near-side angular correlation across |Δη|>2.75 is observed in d+Au collisions. Using the event plane method applied to the Au-going energy distribution, we extract the anisotropy strength v_{2} for inclusive charged hadrons at midrapidity up to p_{T}=4.5 GeV/c. We also present the measurement of v_{2} for identified π^{±} and (anti)protons in central d+Au collisions, and observe a mass-ordering pattern similar to that seen in heavy-ion collisions. These results are compared with viscous hydrodynamic calculations and measurements from p+Pb at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. The magnitude of the mass ordering in d+Au is found to be smaller than that in p+Pb collisions, which may indicate smaller radial flow in lower energy d+Au collisions.

Abstract
The production of the strange and double-strange baryon resonances ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]) has been measured at mid-rapidity ([Formula: see text][Formula: see text]) in proton-proton collisions at [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] 7 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. Transverse momentum spectra for inelastic collisions are compared to QCD-inspired models, which in general underpredict the data. A search for the [Formula: see text] pentaquark, decaying in the [Formula: see text] channel, has been carried out but no evidence is seen.

Exclusive J/ψ photoproduction off protons in ultraperipheral p-Pb collisions at √(s(NN))=5.02 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2014; 113:232504. Abstract
We present the first measurement at the LHC of exclusive J/ψ photoproduction off protons, in ultraperipheral proton-lead collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. Events are selected with a dimuon pair produced either in the rapidity interval, in the laboratory frame, 2.5<y<4 (p-Pb) or -3.6<y<-2.6 (Pb-p), and no other particles observed in the ALICE acceptance. The measured cross sections σ(γ+p→J/ψ+p) are 33.2±2.2(stat)±3.2(syst)±0.7(theor) nb in p-Pb and 284±36(stat)_{-32}^{+27}(syst)±26(theor) nb in Pb-p collisions. We measure this process up to about 700 GeV in the γp center of mass, which is a factor of two larger than the highest energy studied at HERA. The data are consistent with a power law dependence of the J/ψ photoproduction cross section in γp energies from about 20 to 700 GeV, or equivalently, from Bjorken x scaling variable between ∼2×10^{-2} and ∼2×10^{-5}, thus indicating no significant change in the gluon density behavior of the proton between HERA and LHC energies.

Measurement of prompt D-meson production in p-Pb collisions at √(s(NN))=5.02 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2014; 113:232301. Abstract
The p_{T}-differential production cross sections of the prompt charmed mesons D^{0}, D^{+}, D^{*+}, and D_{s}^{+} and their charge conjugate in the rapidity interval -0.96<y_{cms}<0.04 were measured in p-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The nuclear modification factor R_{pPb}, quantifying the D-meson yield in p-Pb collisions relative to the yield in pp collisions scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions, is compatible within the 15%-20% uncertainties with unity in the transverse momentum interval 1<p_{T}<24 GeV/c. No significant difference among the R_{pPb} of the four D-meson species is observed. The results are described within uncertainties by theoretical calculations that include initial-state effects. The measurement adds experimental evidence that the modification of the momentum spectrum of D mesons observed in Pb-Pb collisions with respect to pp collisions is due to strong final-state effects induced by hot partonic matter.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Revisions in terminology of fluid collections in acute pancreatitis have necessitated reanalysis of their evolution and outcome. The course of fluid collections in patients with acute pancreatitis was evaluated prospectively. METHODS Consecutive adults with acute pancreatitis, who had contrast-enhanced CT (CECT) within 5-7 days of symptom onset, were enrolled in a prospective cohort study in a tertiary-care centre. Patients were treated according to standard guidelines. Follow-up transabdominal ultrasonography was done at 4-week intervals for at least 6 months. CECT was repeated at 6-10 weeks, or at any time if there were new or persistent symptoms. Asymptomatic collections were followed until spontaneous resolution. Risk factors for pancreatic pseudocysts or walled-off necrosis (WON) were assessed in multivariable analyses. RESULTS Of 122 patients with acute pancreatitis, 109 were analysed. Some 91 patients (83·5 per cent) had fluid collections at baseline. Eleven of 29 with interstitial oedematous pancreatitis had acute peripancreatic fluid collections, none of which evolved into pseudocysts. All 80 patients with acute necrotizing pancreatitis had at least one acute necrotizing collection (ANC); of these, five patients died (2 after drainage), three underwent successful drainage within 5 weeks, and collections resolved spontaneously in 33 and evolved into WON in 39. By 6 months' follow-up, WON had required drainage in eight patients, resolved spontaneously in 23 and was persistent but asymptomatic in seven. Factors associated with increased risk of WON were blood urea nitrogen 20 mg/dl or more (odds ratio (OR) 10·96, 95 per cent c.i. 2·57 to 46·73; P = 0·001) and baseline ANC diameter greater than 6 cm (OR 14·57, 1·60 to 132·35; P = 0·017). Baseline ANC diameter over 6 cm was the only independent predictor of either the need for drainage or persistence of such collections beyond 6 months (hazard ratio 6·61, 1·77 to 24·59; P = 0·005). CONCLUSION Pancreatic pseudocysts develop infrequently in oedematous acute pancreatitis. Only one-quarter of ANCs either require intervention or persist beyond 6 months, whereas more than one-half of WONs resolve without any intervention within 6 months of onset. Baseline diameter of ANC(s) is an important predictor of outcome.

Abstract
We report the fabrication and optical response of boron-doped single silicon nanowire-based metal-semiconductor-metal photodetector. Typical single nanowire devices with diameter of ∼80-100 nm and electrode spacing of ∼1 μm were made using electron-beam lithography from nanowires, grown by a metal-assisted chemical etching process. A high responsivity, of the order of 10(4) A W(-1), was observed even at zero bias in a single nanowire photodetector with peak responsivity in the near-infrared region. The responsivity was found to increase with increasing bias and decreasing nanowire diameter. Finite element based optical simulation was proposed to explain the diameter dependent performance of a single nanowire. The observed photoresponse is sensitive to the polarization of exciting light source, allowing the device to act as a polarization-dependent near-infrared photodetector.

Abstract
The inclusive production cross sections at forward rapidity of [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text](1S) and [Formula: see text](2S) are measured in [Formula: see text] collisions at [Formula: see text] with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.35 pb[Formula: see text]. Quarkonia are reconstructed in the dimuon-decay channel and the signal yields are evaluated by fitting the [Formula: see text] invariant mass distributions. The differential production cross sections are measured as a function of the transverse momentum [Formula: see text] and rapidity [Formula: see text], over the ranges [Formula: see text] GeV/c for [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] GeV/c for all other resonances and for [Formula: see text]. The measured cross sections integrated over [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], and assuming unpolarized quarkonia, are: [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text]b, [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text]b, [Formula: see text] nb and [Formula: see text] nb, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second one is systematic. The results are compared to measurements performed by other LHC experiments and to theoretical models.

Abstract
We report hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) properties of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) of five different shapes, quasi-spherical (∼10 and ∼20 nm diameter), rod (aspect ratio ∼2), and branched shapes, tetrapod, flower and star with 800 nm, 150 fs laser excitation. Using ∼10 nm spherical GNPs as reference, the first hyperpolarizability (β) values were calculated for all other shapes. Star and flower shaped GNPs have the highest hyperpolarizability (∼130 and ∼52 times higher, respectively), while rod and tetrapod shaped GNPs only have modest enhancement (∼7 times), which is similar to ∼20 nm size quasi-spherical particles. These enhancements are attributed to reduced symmetry as well as the presence of sharp tips on GNP surface. When the β values are normalized with respect to the number of atoms per particle, the flower and star shaped GNPs still have the highest hyperpolarizability values. The polar plots of vertically polarized HRS signal as a function of the angle of polarization of the incoming incident light shows two lobes, indicating that excitation is predominantly dipolar in nature although the size of some GNPs are big enough to show a quadrupolar response. It is believed that the presence of sharp tips at the surface of these large sized GNPs is responsible for the observed dipolar response. This study shows that GNPs having sharp tips might be a better candidate when their nonlinear properties are used for sensing applications.

Cold-nuclear-matter effects on heavy-quark production at forward and backward rapidity in d + Au collisions at √sNN = 200 GeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2014; 112:252301. Abstract
The PHENIX experiment has measured open heavy-flavor production via semileptonic decay over the transverse momentum range 1 < p(T) < 6 GeV/c at forward and backward rapidity (1.4 < |y| < 2.0) in d+Au and p + p collisions at √sNN = 200 GeV. In central d+Au collisions, relative to the yield in p + p collisions scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions, a suppression is observed at forward rapidity (in the d-going direction) and an enhancement at backward rapidity (in the Au-going direction). Predictions using nuclear-modified-parton-distribution functions, even with additional nuclear-p(T) broadening, cannot simultaneously reproduce the data at both rapidity ranges, which implies that these models are incomplete and suggests the possible importance of final-state interactions in the asymmetric d + Au collision system. These results can be used to probe cold-nuclear-matter effects, which may significantly affect heavy-quark production, in addition to helping constrain the magnitude of charmonia-breakup effects in nuclear matter.

Abstract
Charged-pion-interferometry measurements were made with respect to the second- and third-order event plane for Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV. A strong azimuthal-angle dependence of the extracted Gaussian-source radii was observed with respect to both the second- and third-order event planes. The results for the second-order dependence indicate that the initial eccentricity is reduced during the medium evolution, which is consistent with previous results. In contrast, the results for the third-order dependence indicate that the initial triangular shape is significantly reduced and potentially reversed by the end of the medium evolution, and that the third-order oscillations are largely dominated by the dynamical effects from triangular flow.

Abstract
Metallothioneins are signals of metal exposure and widely used in biomonitoring. Franciscana dolphin is an endemic cetacean from the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean, classified as Vulnerable A3d by the IUCN. Metallothionein, copper and zinc in Franciscana were assessed in two geographic groups; one inhabits La Plata River estuary, anthropogenically impacted, and the other inhabits marine coastal ecosystems, with negligible pollution. Despite the environment, hepatic and renal MT concentrations were similar, but there was a declining trend from early to later developmental stages. Metallothionein K/L, Cu and Zn levels corresponded to normal reported ranges. MT was not related with Cd. Fetal concentrations were higher than its mother. These results and the health status of dolphins are suggesting that MT correspond to physiological ranges for the species, and they are closely to homeostasis of Zn and Cu, according to its ontogenetic changes. The information constitutes the first MT information on Franciscana dolphin and can be considered as baseline for the species conservation.

Abstract
We report ultra large photo responsivity ℜ (ratio of photo-generated current to absorbed power) in a single nanowire (NW) device made from a single strand of a nanowire (diameter ~30nm and length ~200nm) of an organomettalic semiconducting charge transfer complex material of CuTCNQ. The device shows responsivity of 8x10(4) A/Watt at 1 volt applied bias with an enhancement over the dark current exceeding 10(5) at zero bias. The observed photo current has a spectral dependence that strongly follows the main absorption peak (close to 405 nm) showing the primary role of absorbed photo-generated carriers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Hürthle cells (HCs) are follicular-derived oncocytic cells seen in a variety of neoplastic and nonneoplastic pathologic entities of the thyroid gland. This study was to report our experience of the surgical outcome on the finding of HCs on fine-needle aspiration biopsies (FNABs) of thyroid nodules, to identify cytologic predictors of HC neoplasms and an attempt to overcome diagnostic pitfalls. STUDY DESIGN This was a retrospective study of all FNAB of thyroid nodules with findings of HCs with subsequent surgical resection. The FNAB slides of 70 thyroid nodules were blindly reviewed for specific cytomorphologic characteristics. The cytologic findings were correlated with the corresponding final surgical pathology diagnosis. RESULTS The patients ranged in age from 25 to 78 years with a male:female ratio of 1:2. There were 19 false-negative and 4 false-positive cases. Overall high cellularity, scant colloid and >90% HCs on FNAB are consistently seen in a neoplastic HC process. All cases of Hashimoto's thyroiditis were associated with prominent nucleoli and 92% of cases demonstrating transgressing vessels were neoplastic. CONCLUSION Diagnostic accuracy can be improved by following the current Bethesda classification system. A constellation of cytomorphologic features in conjunction with clinical findings can be considered a strong predictor of a neoplastic process.
