Abstract
The present study examined the validity and reliability of the Japanese version of the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations-2nd Edition™ (CISS; hereafter the CISS–J). The participants were 1,268 healthy Japanese individuals. The factor analyses yielded three major scales (task-, emotion-, and avoidance-oriented coping) corresponding to the original version. In addition, the avoidance-oriented scale of the CISS–J contained two subscales (Distraction and Social diversion), as in the original version. Cronbach's α coefficient was found to be .75–.89 for the three scales and two subscales. Results show that the CISS–J is useful for assessing the coping strategies among this sample of Japanese individuals.

Abstract
Dried bonito (Katsuobusi), a Japanese traditional seasoning made of bonito muscle was hydrolyzed by various proteases and the inhibitory activity of the hydrolyzates for angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) [EC 3.4.15.1] was measured. Among the digests, thermolysin digest showed the most potent inhibitory activity. Eight inhibitory peptides were isolated from the digest using HPLC. The amino acid sequences of inhibitory peptides were Ile-Lys-Pro-Leu-Asn-Tyr, Ile-Val-Gly-Arg-Pro-Arg-His-Gln-Gly, Ile-Trp-His-His-Thr, Ala-Leu-Pro-His-Ala, Phe-Gln-Pro, Leu-Lys-Pro-Asn-Met, Ile-Tyr, and Asp-Tyr-Gly-Leu-Tyr-Pro. By searching for the sequence homology in many proteins, four of them were found in the primary structure of actin. Asp-Met-Ile-Pro-Ala-Gln-Lys was obtained from the boiling water extract of dried bonito and this peptide was found in the primary structure of creatine kinase. Fragments of these peptides were prepared by further enzymatic digestion or chemical synthesis and their ACE-inhibitory activities were measured. Among them, Ile-Lys-Pro, Ile-Trp, Leu-Lys-Pro, and Leu-Tyr-Pro had higher inhibitory activity than their parental peptides. Ile-Lys-Pro suppressed the hypertensive activity of angiotensin I.

Abstract
This paper discusses the improvements of the re-entrant resonant cavity applicator, such as an electromagnetic shield and a water bolus for concentrating heating energy on deep tumors in an abdominal region of the human body. From our previous study, it was found that the proposed heating system using the resonant cavity applicator, was effective for heating brain tumors and also for heating other small objects. However, when heating the abdomen with the developed applicator, undesirable areas such as the neck, arm, hip and breast were heated. Therefore, we have improved the resonant cavity applicator to overcome these problems. First, a cylindrical shield made of an aluminum alloy was installed inside the cavity. It was designed to protect non-tumorous areas from concentrated electromagnetic fields. Second, in order to concentrate heating energy on deep tumors inside the human body, a water bolus was installed around the body. Third, the length of the lower inner electrode was changed to control the heating area. In this study, to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed methods, specific absorption rate (SAR) distributions were calculated by FEM with the 3-D anatomical human body model reconstructed from MRI images. From these results, it was confirmed that the improved heating system was effective to non-invasively heat abdominal deep tumors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE It has not been clarified whether the postoperative resolution of vertebral deformities achieved by KP are superior to those achieved by VP. We compared the outcomes of KP and VP, taking into account the presence of vertebral mobility, to determine whether the balloon inflation in KP may contribute to postoperative resolution of the vertebral deformities in patients with VCFs. MATERIALS AND METHODS The subjects had 34 vertebral bodies treated by VP, and 43 vertebral bodies treated by KP. In all patients, preoperative dynamic imaging was performed to assess the presence of vertebral mobility. First, the vertebral height restoration and kyphotic change were compared between the VP and KP groups. Then, the patients were further divided into 2 groups on the basis of the presence of vertebral mobility, and they were compared within and between the VP and KP groups in relation to the presence of vertebral mobility. RESULTS Overall, no significant differences were observed in either the vertebral height restoration or kyphotic change between the VP and KP groups (P > .20). Preoperative dynamic imaging identified 19 vertebral bodies each with vertebral mobility in the VP (56%) and KP groups (44%) (P = .21). Within the VP and KP groups, the vertebral height restoration and kyphotic changes were significantly better in patients with vertebral mobility than in those without (P < .01). There were no significant differences between the 2 treatment groups after adjustment for the presence of vertebral mobility (P > .30). CONCLUSIONS In both the VP and KP groups, the vertebral height restoration and kyphotic change largely depended on the preoperative vertebral mobility. The use of the balloon itself contributed little to resolution of the vertebral deformities.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study evaluated blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity, using blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) markers, and assessed the practicality of these markers in the differential diagnosis of neuromyelitis optica (NMO) and multiple sclerosis (MS). METHODS This was a retrospective observational study of consecutive patients presenting with acute phase NMO or MS (first attack or relapse). Haematological tests (including antiaquaporin-4 antibody levels) and CSF parameters (using primary component analyses) were undertaken; the correlation between BBB permeability and disease severity (by Expanded Disability Status Scale [EDSS] score) was examined. RESULTS Levels of several markers of BBB permeability were higher in patients with NMO (n=21) than in those with MS (n=52). The CSF:serum albumin ratio (AR) was the one of the main differentiators of NMO and MS. Additionally, there was a significant correlation between AR and clinical severity for NMO but not for MS. CONCLUSIONS Markers of BBB permeability were significantly higher in NMO patients than in MS patients. AR was the best marker for differentiating NMO and MS. Thus, measurement of BBB disruption markers (such as AR) might help to differentiate the diagnosis of NMO and MS in acute clinical settings.

Sevoflurane suppresses tumour necrosis factor-α-induced inflammatory responses in small airway epithelial cells after anoxia/reoxygenation. Br J Anaesth 2013; 110:637-45. Abstract
BACKGROUND Lung ischaemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury is correlated with poor clinical outcome. The inflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, and monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1) are produced by pulmonary epithelial cells during lung transplantation and are considered to be involved in I/R injury. The volatile anaesthetic sevoflurane has been shown to exert a protective effect on I/R injury in various organs. We investigated the effect of sevoflurane on the inflammatory functions of pulmonary epithelial cells in vitro. METHODS Human normal small airway epithelial cells (SAEC) were incubated under anoxic conditions for 24 h with or without sevoflurane and then stimulated with tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α under hyperoxic conditions for 5 h with or without sevoflurane. After incubation, IL-6, IL-8, and MCP-1 mRNA expression was analysed by quantitative real-time RT-PCR. The production of IL-6, IL-8, and MCP-1 was assayed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, the effects of sevoflurane on inflammatory gene expression were examined by DNA microarray analysis, and the effects of sevoflurane on NF-κB-mediated inflammatory cytokine production were examined by immunoblotting. RESULTS Sevoflurane suppressed TNF-α-induced IL-6, IL-8, and MCP-1 gene expression and the production of IL-6 and IL-8 in SAEC under anoxia/reoxygenation conditions. DNA microarray analysis indicated that sevoflurane modulated NF-κB-related gene expression. Sevoflurane significantly inhibited TNF-α-induced translocation of p65 NF-κB into the nucleus. Sevoflurane enhanced TNF-α-induced gene expression of inhibitor κB (IκB) but not of NF-κB. CONCLUSIONS Sevoflurane suppressed the NF-κB-mediated production of pulmonary epithelial cell-derived inflammatory cytokines, including IL-6 and IL-8, which are capable of causing I/R injury.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study investigated oxidative stress in the liver, by determining hepatic expression and serum levels of γ-glutamyltranspeptidase (GGT) and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) in different stages of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and assessed whether GGT can differentiate between the various stages of NAFLD. METHODS Expression of GGT and 8-OHdG was examined in biopsy specimens by immunohistochemistry, and serum GGT and 8-OHdG levels were measured by enzyme-linked immuno sorbent assays in patients with simple fatty liver (n = 10), nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH; n = 10) and, as a control, in alcoholic liver disease (ALD; n = 10). RESULTS Hepatic tissue expression of GGT and 8-OHdG was seen in ALD, NASH and fatty liver patients. The percentage of hepatocytes positive for 8-OHdG expression and serum 8-OHdG levels was significantly higher in patients with NASH than simple fatty liver. Serum GGT levels were increased in all cases with ALD, NASH and fatty liver, and correlated significantly with serum levels of 8-OHdG in ALD and NASH, but not in simple fatty liver. CONCLUSIONS Levels of GGT in fatty liver patients may compensate for mild oxidative stress by repressing 8-OHdG levels and preventing progression to NASH; however further oxidative stress leads to increased levels of 8-OHdG and the development of NASH.
