Abstract
We have carried out hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) of Yb1-x Zr x B12 ([Formula: see text]) to study the effects of electron doping on the Kondo insulator YbB12. The Yb valences of Yb1-x Zr x B12 at 300 K estimated from the Yb 3d HAXPES spectra decreased after substituting Yb with Zr from 2.93 for YbB12 to 2.83 for Yb0.125Zr0.875B12. A temperature dependent valence decrease was found upon cooling for all doping concentrations. We found peak shifts of the B 1s and Zr 3d5/2, and Yb3+ 4f spectra toward the deeper binding-energy with increasing Zr concentration, which indicates a shift of the Fermi level to the higher energy and that of the Yb 4f hole level close to the Fermi level, respectively, due to electron doping. These results qualitatively show the enhanced hybridization between the Yb 4f and conduction-band states with Zr substitution, consistent with magnetic susceptibility measurements.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Arterial spin-labeling MR imaging with multiple postlabeling delays has a potential to evaluate various hemodynamic parameters. To clarify whether arterial spin-labeling MR imaging can identify CBF and perfusion delay in patients with Moyamoya disease, we compared arterial spin-labeling, DSC, and 15O-gas PET in terms of their ability to identify these parameters. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eighteen patients with Moyamoya disease (5 men, 13 women; ages, 21-55 years) were retrospectively analyzed. CBF values of pulsed continuous arterial spin-labeling using 2 postlabeling delays (short arterial spin-labeling, 1525 ms; delayed arterial spin-labeling, 2525 ms) were compared with CBF values measured by 15O-gas PET. All plots were divided into 2 groups by the cutoff of time-based parameters (the time of the maximum observed concentration, TTP, MTT, delay of MTT to cerebellum, and disease severity [symptomatic or not]). The ratio of 2 arterial spin-labeling CBFs (delayed arterial spin-labeling CBF to short arterial spin-labeling CBF) was compared with time-based parameters: time of the maximum observed concentration, TTP, and MTT. RESULTS The short arterial spin-labeling-CBF values were significantly correlated with the PET-CBF values (r = 0.63; P = .01). However, the short arterial spin-labeling-CBF value dropped in the regions with severe perfusion delay. The delayed arterial spin-labeling CBF overestimated PET-CBF regardless of the degree of perfusion delay. Delayed arterial spin-labeling CBF/short arterial spin-labeling CBF was well correlated with the time of the maximum observed concentration, TTP, and MTT (ρ = 0.71, 0.64, and 0.47, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Arterial spin-labeling using 2 postlabeling delays may detect PET-measured true CBF and perfusion delay in patients with Moyamoya disease. Provided its theoretic basis and limitations are considered, noninvasive arterial spin-labeling could be a useful alternative for evaluating the hemodynamics of Moyamoya disease.

Abstract
To examine species composition and population structures in sand lance (Ammodytidae) along the northern Pacific coast of Japan, genetic analysis were carried out for specimens collected in 2014 from Otsuchi Bay, Iwate, Ishinomaki Bay, Miyagi, off Soma, Fukushima and Ise-Mikawa Bays, Aichi. The samples consisted of Ammodytes japonicus and Ammodytes heian, of which the latter is a recently described species. Neither species exhibited significant genetic differences among localities. Only A. japonicus was found in the most southern locality at Aichi, but it decreased northward to <90% in Miyagi and Fukushima and the two species occurred almost evenly in Iwate suggesting a latitudinal cline in their species composition along the northern Pacific coast of Japan, off Tohoku. The vertebral counts differed between A. japonicus and A. heian with modes of 65 and 63, respectively, but this characteristic did not differ significantly within a locality (Iwate). This suggests that the vertebral counts of Ammodytes spp. in Japanese waters are probably strongly determined by the environment than by a species-specific genetic trait.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate whether the transperineal sonographic (TPS) parameters angle of progression (AoP) and midline angle (MLA) can predict the time remaining in the second stage of labor. METHODS We evaluated prospectively women with a singleton pregnancy in cephalic presentation at term between October 2013 and September 2014. TPS volumes were obtained immediately after confirmation by digital vaginal examination of a fully dilated cervix. AoP and MLA were measured offline by analyzing the ultrasound volumes. Progression of labor was evaluated every hour during the second stage. The associations of AoP and MLA with the interval between TPS assessment and delivery were evaluated using multivariable Cox proportional hazards analyses in nulliparous and parous women separately. RESULTS A total of 557 women were evaluated. An AoP ≥ 160° (adjusted hazard ratio (aHR), 2.52 (95% CI, 1.98-3.19)) and MLA ≤ 10° (aHR, 1.79 (95% CI, 1.35-2.34)) in nulliparous women and an AoP ≥ 150° (aHR, 1.86 (95% CI, 1.34-2.57)) and MLA ≤ 20° (aHR, 1.69 (95% CI, 1.21-2.34)) in parous women were significantly associated with the remaining time in labor. The positive/negative likelihood ratios of AoP, MLA, clinical station (fetal head descent as observed by digital examination) and clinical rotation (fetal head rotation as observed by digital examination) at these cut-off points were 3.6/0.6, 2.0/0.6, 1.6/0.6 and 1.6/0.8, respectively, in nulliparous women, and 2.4/0.6, 1.3/0.7, 7.6/0.5 and 5.2/0.7, respectively, in parous women. CONCLUSION TPS assessment of AoP and MLA in the second stage of labor was useful for predicting the time remaining in labor and had higher predictive value than did digital vaginal examination in nulliparous women. Abstract
Preoperative ultrasonograms of 11 surgically proved thymomas and ex vivo ultrasonograms of 3 resected specimens were compared with pathologic findings of resected specimens. Among 11 thymomas 7 appeared solid, 3 were solid with several cystic regions, and the remaining one was unilocular cystic in appearance. Cystic regions on ultrasonograms corresponded to cystic changes on pathologic specimens. Six malignant thymomas showed a typical lacy appearance on ultrasonograms, which corresponded to the lobulated configuration separated by fibrous septa shown on the pathologic specimens.

Abstract
A tailored-pulse-imploded core with a diameter of 70 μm is flashed by counterirradiating 110 fs, 7 TW laser pulses. Photon emission (>40 eV) from the core exceeds the emission from the imploded core by 6 times, even though the heating pulse energies are only one seventh of the implosion energy. The coupling efficiency from the heating laser to the core using counterirradiation is 14% from the enhancement of photon emission. Neutrons are also produced by counterpropagating fast deuterons accelerated by the photon pressure of the heating pulses. A collisional two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation reveals that the collisionless two counterpropagating fast-electron currents induce mega-Gauss magnetic filaments in the center of the core due to the Weibel instability. The counterpropagating fast-electron currents are absolutely unstable and independent of the core density and resistivity. Fast electrons with energy below a few MeV are trapped by these filaments in the core region, inducing an additional coupling. This might lead to the observed bright photon emissions.

Abstract
We used the brain perfusion index (BPI), an indicator of the average amount of cerebral blood flow (CBF), to evaluate the usefulness of the average amount of CBF for neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus (NPSLE). Of the seventy three SLE patients examined in this study (total 100 scans), 16 patients (23 scans) had already been diagnosed with NPSLE based on clinical symptoms indicative of central nervous system involvement. In addition, 12 patients (17 scans) exhibited the antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (APS). BPI is significantly influenced by age and we therefore used the BPI ratio (ratio of age predicted BPI to measured BPI value) for each assessment. The mean BPI value of 100 scans was 11.2 + 2.79, and the mean BPI ratio was 0.99 + 0.24 in all SLE patients. The mean BPI ratio among NPSLE (0.84 + 0.19) was significantly lower than that of the non-NPSLE patients (1.04 + 0.24) (P, 0.0005). However, there was no difference in the mean BPI ratio between APS patients (0.98 + 0.24) and non-APS patients (0.99 + 0.25). These results indicate that the mean CBF assessed by the BPI ratio using SPECT is of use in the evaluation of central nervous system involvement in SLE patients.

Abstract
Acquired dermal melanocytosis (ADM) is a relatively rare, but well-described disease among adolescent to middle-aged East Asian women, particularly those of Japanese and Chinese descent. Clinically, ADM manifests as multiple punctate and greyish-brown pigmented areas 1-3 mm in diameter occurring on both sides of the forehead and zygomatic region. The subtype of ADM affecting the face and extremities is extremely rare even in East Asian women. We describe three patients with ADM of the face and extremities (ADMFE) and their characteristic clinical features. All patients were Japanese women, and showed multiple greyish-brown pigmentations on both nasal wings and on the extensor surface of the extremities. We found that the clinical features were strikingly uniform, and that a pigmented lesion on the nasal wing can be an important clue to distinguish ADMFE from other hyperpigmented diseases of the hands and feet. One patient was treated with Q-switched ruby laser with excellent outcome. Increased awareness of ADMFE can lead to earlier diagnosis and potential treatment.
