Abstract
INTRODUCTION Aortitis often occurs in patients with systemic vasculitis. PRESENTATION OF CASE We reported a 73 year old man with giant cell arteritis who was presented with abdominal pain and weight loss. DISCUSSION Aortitis was diagnosed on PET-CT scan performed because initial investigations raised the possibility of pancreatic pathology. CONCLUSION This case highlights the utility of PET-CT in the diagnosis of abdominal aortitis and the need to consider aortitis as a differential in patients with abdominal pain with a history of vasculitis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Systemic therapy has proven only marginal effects in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) so far. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of targeting fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) on tumour and stromal cells in HCC models. METHODS Human and murine HCC cells, endothelial cells (ECs), vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs), hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), human HCC samples, FGFR inhibitor BGJ398 and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitor rapamycin were used. Effects on growth, motility, signalling and angiogenic markers were determined. In vivo subcutaneous and syngeneic orthotopic tumour models were used. RESULTS In tumour cells and ECs, targeting FGFR showed significant inhibitory effects on signalling and motility. Minor effects of FGFR inhibition were observed on VSMCs and HSCs, which were significantly enhanced by combining FGFR and mTOR blockade. In vivo daily (5 mg kg(-1)) treatment with BGJ398 led to a significant growth inhibition in subcutaneous tumour models, but only a combination of FGFR and mTOR blockade impaired tumour growth in the orthotopic model. This was paralleled by reduced tumour cell proliferation, vascularisation, pericytes and increased apoptosis. CONCLUSIONS Targeting FGFR with BGJ398 affects tumour cells and ECs, whereas only a combination with mTOR inhibition impairs recruitment of VSMCs and HSCs. Therefore, this study provides evidence for combined FGFR/mTOR inhibition in HCC.

Abstract
AIM Aim of the study was to analyze the relationship between erectile function and cardiovascular risk factors by assessing arterial stiffness and myocardial scintigraphy and carotid artery intima-media thickness. METHODS Fifty-nine consecutive asymptomatic men aged 30-86 years, were included. Myocardial scintigraphy, Doppler sonography of carotid artery and arterial stifness parameters were performed. Erectile function was evaluated with a validated erectile function index quesionnaire. RESULTS The control group included 18 subjects and the study group included 41 subjects with abnormal IIEF-5 scores. We compared both group's IIEF-5 scores there was significant correlation between IIEF-5 and cholesterol (P<0.05) and HbA1c (P<0.05). Moreover, there was a significant correlation in patients with abnormal IIEF-5 scores and pathologic myocardial perfusion imaging (P<0.05) and triglyceride (P<0.05). A two-factor ANOVA showed two significant interactions patients with abnormal cholesterol and abnormal pulse wave velocity, augmentation index had lower IIEF-5 scores; patients with abnormal triglyceride values, and abnormal Hb1Ac had lower IIEF-5 scores. CONCLUSION Eretile dysfunction (ED) prevalence is high in cardiologic patients referred for myocardial nuclear imaging. There is a significant relation between ED, diabetes and hyperlipidemia, and advanced age. Myocardial nuclear scan and arterial stiffness parameters could be used to stratify the cardiovascular risk factors in ED patients.

Abstract
The COMPASS collaboration at CERN has investigated pion Compton scattering, π(-)γ→π(-)γ, at center-of-mass energy below 3.5 pion masses. The process is embedded in the reaction π(-)Ni→π(-)γNi, which is initiated by 190 GeV pions impinging on a nickel target. The exchange of quasireal photons is selected by isolating the sharp Coulomb peak observed at smallest momentum transfers, Q(2)<0.0015 (GeV/c)(2). From a sample of 63,000 events, the pion electric polarizability is determined to be α(π)=(2.0±0.6(stat)±0.7(syst))×10(-4) fm(3) under the assumption α(π)=-β(π), which relates the electric and magnetic dipole polarizabilities. It is the most precise measurement of this fundamental low-energy parameter of strong interaction that has been addressed since long by various methods with conflicting outcomes. While this result is in tension with previous dedicated measurements, it is found in agreement with the expectation from chiral perturbation theory. An additional measurement replacing pions by muons, for which the cross-section behavior is unambiguously known, was performed for an independent estimate of the systematic uncertainty.

Abstract
Field trails are indispensable for the scientific analysis of risks and potential benefits of genetically modified plants (GMP). The dramatic reduction of field trials in the European Union (EU) coincides with increasing safety demands, decreases in funding, and changes in the European directives. In parallel, opposition from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) has grown, and public acceptance has decreased. The cultivation of events approved by the EU is still allowed in principle, nevertheless, at least in Germany, there is a de facto moratorium on cultivation. In Switzerland, where development was much more hesitant compared to Germany, field trials are now possible, and a protected site has been established by the government. Public acceptance for scientific trials in Switzerland has risen, despite the continued moratorium on the cultivation based on a referendum.

Abstract
High incidences of polyspermic penetration continue to challenge researchers during porcine in vitro fertilisation (IVF). The aim of this study was to reduce the incidence of polyspermy by increasing the perivitelline space thickness with glucuronic acid and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (GlcNAc) supplementation during oocyte maturation. After maturation, zona pellucida and perivitelline space thicknesses, intracellular glutathione concentrations and fertilisation kinetics were measured, in addition to embryonic cleavage and blastocyst formation at 48h and 144h after IVF, respectively. There were no significant differences between the treatments for zona pellucida thickness, penetration rates, male pronuclear formation or cortical granule exocytosis. Glucuronic acid supplementation significantly increased (PPPP<0.05) of cleavage and blastocyst formation by 48 and 144h after IVF compared with all other groups. These results indicate that supplementing with 0.005mM glucuronic acid and 0.005mM GlcNAc during oocyte maturation decreases the incidence of polyspermic penetration by increasing perivitelline space thickness and improving embryo development in pigs.

Abstract
Introduction: The EvaluateTM study (Evaluation of therapy management and patient compliance in postmenopausal hormone receptor-positive breast cancer patients receiving letrozole treatment) is a prospective, non-interventional study for the assessment of therapy management and compliance in the routine care of postmenopausal women with invasive hormone receptor-positive breast cancer receiving letrozole. The parameters for inclusion in the study are presented and discussed here. Material and Methods: Between January 2008 and December 2009 a total of 5045 patients in 310 study centers were recruited to the EvaluateTM study. Inclusion criteria were hormone receptor-positive breast cancer and adjuvant treatment or metastasis. 373 patients were excluded from the analysis for various reasons. Results: A total of 4420 patients receiving adjuvant treatment and 252 patients with metastasis receiving palliative treatment were included in the study. For 4181 patients receiving adjuvant treatment, treatment with the aromatase inhibitor letrozole commenced immediately after surgery (upfront). Two hundred patients had initially received tamoxifen and started aromatase inhibitor treatment with letrozole at 1-5 years after diagnosis (switch), und 39 patients only commenced letrozole treatment 5-10 years after diagnosis (extended endocrine therapy). Patient and tumor characteristics were within expected ranges, as were comorbidities and concurrent medication. Conclusion: The data from the EvaluateTM study will offer a good overview of therapy management in the routine care of postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. Planned analyses will look at therapy compliance and patient satisfaction with how information is conveyed and the contents of the conveyed information.

Abstract
Therapeutic options for patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) remain limited. In a multicenter, Phase II study, 65 patients with histologically confirmed CRPC received a biomodulatory regimen during the six-month core study. Treatment comprised daily doses of imatinib mesylate, pioglitazone, etoricoxib, treosulfan and dexamethasone. The primary endpoint was prostate-specific antigen (PSA) response. Responders could enter an extension phase until disease progression or intolerable toxicity occurred. Mean PSA was 45.3 ng/mL at baseline, and 77 % of patients had a PSA doubling time <3 months. Of the 61 evaluable patients, 37 patients (60.6 %) responded or had stable disease and 23 of them (37.7 % of 61 patients) were PSA responders. Among the 23 responders mean PSA decreased from 278.9 ± 784.1 ng/mL at baseline to 8.8 ± 11.6 ng/mL at the final visit (week 24). The progression-free survival (PFS) was 467 days in the ITT population. Of the 947 adverse events, 57.6 % were suspected to be drug-related, 13.8 % led to dose adjustment or permanent discontinuation and 40.2 % required concomitant medication. This novel combination approach led to an impressive PSA response rate of 37.7 % in CRPC patients. The good PSA response and PFS rate combined with the manageable toxicity profile suggest an alternative treatment option.

Abstract
The GMO Risk Assessment and Communication of Evidence (GRACE; www.grace-fp7.eu ) project is funded by the European Commission within the 7th Framework Programme. A key objective of GRACE is to conduct 90-day animal feeding trials, animal studies with an extended time frame as well as analytical, in vitro and in silico studies on genetically modified (GM) maize in order to comparatively evaluate their use in GM plant risk assessment. In the present study, the results of two 90-day feeding trials with two different GM maize MON810 varieties, their near-isogenic non-GM varieties and four additional conventional maize varieties are presented. The feeding trials were performed by taking into account the guidance for such studies published by the EFSA Scientific Committee in 2011 and the OECD Test Guideline 408. The results obtained show that the MON810 maize at a level of up to 33 % in the diet did not induce adverse effects in male and female Wistar Han RCC rats after subchronic exposure, independently of the two different genetic backgrounds of the event.

Abstract
The development of noninvasive methods to detect and monitor tumors continues to be a major challenge in oncology. We used digital polymerase chain reaction-based technologies to evaluate the ability of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) to detect tumors in 640 patients with various cancer types. We found that ctDNA was detectable in >75% of patients with advanced pancreatic, ovarian, colorectal, bladder, gastroesophageal, breast, melanoma, hepatocellular, and head and neck cancers, but in less than 50% of primary brain, renal, prostate, or thyroid cancers. In patients with localized tumors, ctDNA was detected in 73, 57, 48, and 50% of patients with colorectal cancer, gastroesophageal cancer, pancreatic cancer, and breast adenocarcinoma, respectively. ctDNA was often present in patients without detectable circulating tumor cells, suggesting that these two biomarkers are distinct entities. In a separate panel of 206 patients with metastatic colorectal cancers, we showed that the sensitivity of ctDNA for detection of clinically relevant KRAS gene mutations was 87.2% and its specificity was 99.2%. Finally, we assessed whether ctDNA could provide clues into the mechanisms underlying resistance to epidermal growth factor receptor blockade in 24 patients who objectively responded to therapy but subsequently relapsed. Twenty-three (96%) of these patients developed one or more mutations in genes involved in the mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway. Together, these data suggest that ctDNA is a broadly applicable, sensitive, and specific biomarker that can be used for a variety of clinical and research purposes in patients with multiple different types of cancer.

Abstract
The 3-monosubstituted 2,3,5,6,7,8-hexahydro-1 H-[1,2,4]triazolo[1,2-a]pyridazine-1-thiones 3 (R1, R3 = H) were recently reported to possess inhibitory activity against inducible nitric oxide synthase in a cell based assay (Schulz et al. 2013). The 3,3-disubstituted 2,3,5,6,7,8-hexahydro-1H-[1,2,4]triazolo[1,2-a]pyridazine-1-thiones 3 and 4 (R2,R3 ≠ H) were synthesized by cyclocondensation of the hexahydropyridazine-1-carbothioamides 1 with ketones. In order to access the 3,3-unsubstituted 2,3,5,6,7,8-hexahydro-1H-[1,2,4]triazolo[1,2-a]pyridazine-1-thiones, the unsubstituted parent system of these compounds, several synthetic routes were studied. By these methods the desired heterocyclic system 2a as well as new a-anellated and N-substutited hexahydropyridazines were obtained. The biological evaluation of the title compounds confirmed the previously made finding that an aromatic moiety in position 3 of the substance is important for an inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) inhibitory activity.

Abstract
Serum samples collected from 167 equines of 12 districts in Albania were tested for West Nile virus-specific antibodies by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and virus neutralization assay, using WNV lineage 1 and 2. In addition, 95 bird serum samples from Albania and 29 horse samples from Kosovo were tested in ELISA. An overall seroprevalence rate of 22% was found in horses from Albania, whereas no specific antibodies were found in the equine samples from Kosovo and the bird samples. This is the first report indicating WNV infections in animals in Albania, and the first reported seroprevalence study conducted for Kosovo. These results provide evidence for widespread infections of WNV in Albania.

Abstract
The Mössbauer effect of 57Fe has been studied in the series of compounds Vi1-xFexO2 for very low Fe concentrations between 4.2 and 500 K. Three insulating phases are clearly distinguished. In the low temperature M1-phase only one Fe-site is seen for x ≦ 0.0026 in accordance with the insulating phase of VO2. But for higher Fe concentrations, x ≧ 0.006, two iron sites can be resolved by their electric field gradients in the M1-phase. The Debye-Waller factor shows an anomalous behaviour for both iron concentrations in the M1-phase.

Abstract
By Mössbauer spectroscopy the cubic compound CsFe(CN)3, α = 5.208 Å, is shown to contain high and low spin iron(II) in 1:1 proportion independant of temperature 4.2 ≦ T ≦ 600 K. This gives evidence of isomorphism with the elpasolite Cs2MgFe(CN)6. The quadrupol splitting of the high spin iron(II) spectra strongly depends on temperature and vanishes beyond 400 K. This behaviour is interpreted in terms of static Jahn Teller distortion in the low temperature range, also indicated by the splitting of the IR absorption associated with the Fe-N stretching frequency.
The data of Mössbauer and IR spectra, as well as of magnetic susceptibility measurements are given and discussed.

Abstract
The Mössbauer investigations of V1-xFexO2 with x = 0.024 indicate that Fe enters two cation positions of M2 and M3. At the phase transition the two quadrupole splittings show a discontinuous behavior whereas the isomer shift changes continuously with a crossingover at the M2, M3 transition (Tt′ = 275 K). Generally a first order phase transition is accompanied by a change of the cell volume V and a change of the isomer shift. The observed continuous behavior of the isomer shift points to a first order transition with δV ≠ 0.

The Mössbauer data evaluated for the two iron sites (Fe 1/Fe 2 respectively) in Na2MnFeF7 are: θ = 0/90°, φ = undetermined/70°, η = 0.6 both, Η = 551/541 kOe, Vzz = ± 2.7 · 1018 Vcm-2 both. NaMnFeF7 is antiferromagnetic with a Neél temperature of TN = 94 Κ for both iron positions.

Abstract
Histone 3 lysine 4 (H3K4) methylation is a universal epigenetic mark. In mammals, there are six H3K4 methyltransferases related to yeast Set1 and fly Trithorax, including two orthologs of Set1: Setd1a and Setd1b. Here we show that mouse Setd1a is required for gastrulation, whereas Setd1b-deficient embryos survive to E11.5 but are grossly retarded. Setd1a knockout embryos implant but do not proceed past the epiblast. Furthermore, Setd1a is not required until the inner cell mass has formed, at which stage it has replaced Mll2 as the major H3K4 methyltransferase. Setd1a is required for embryonic, epiblast and neural stem cell survival and neural stem cell reprogramming, whereas Setd1b is dispensable. Deletion of Setd1a in embryonic stem cells resulted in rapid losses of bulk H3K4 methylation, pluripotency gene expression and proliferation, with G1 pileup. Setd1b overexpression could not rescue the proliferation defects caused by loss of Setd1a in embryonic stem cells. The precise developmental requirement for Setd1a suggests that gastrulation is regulated by a switch between the major H3K4 methyltransferases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Demographic changes in Germany are leading towards a decrease of the population from the current 82 million to 74 million in the year 2050. As a consequence the shortage of qualified staff will be aggravated and intensifying recruiting efforts will increase competition among employers. An alternative is to utilize the potential of jobholders older than 55 years, the so-called generation 55 +. However, little is known about the hospital workforce generation 55 +. METHODS An internet search was conducted using google.de, yahoo.de and altavista.de for "generation 55 + and medicine" and "demographics, personnel and hospital" In Medline/pubmed a search was conducted for the key words "aging workforce" (949 sources) and in combination with AND "doctors" (134 sources), "demographic changes", "staff" (794 sources) as well as for "generation 55 + AND doctors" (312 sources). Finally, sources from reputable public institutions and academic medical societies were analyzed. The data were sorted by main categories and relevance for hospitals. Statistical analysis was done mainly using descriptive measures. RESULTS From initially more than 530,000 sources, a total of 289 studies and reports on the topic were plotted. There was no evidence for a negative correlation between age and work ability or fitness. Jobholders senior to 55 years can be divided into the "economic miracle generation" and into the so-called baby-boomers. Both groups have differences in values, communication needs and leadership requirements. They jointly prefer direct communication and seek appreciation for their experience on the job. CONCLUSIONS Generation 55 + is not asking for an upscaled position in hospitals. They expect respect and appreciation for their sound experience of work and life. Generation 55 + wants to be integrated and sought after. Keeping these employees fit, motivated and qualified is a sound approach to fight the foreseeable shortage of qualified staff in hospitals.

Abstract
The electromagnetic dipole strength below the neutron-separation energy has been studied for the xenon isotopes with mass numbers A=124, 128, 132, and 134 in nuclear resonance fluorescence experiments using the γELBE bremsstrahlung facility at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf and the HIγS facility at Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory Durham. The systematic study gained new information about the influence of the neutron excess as well as of nuclear deformation on the strength in the region of the pygmy dipole resonance. The results are compared with those obtained for the chain of molybdenum isotopes and with predictions of a random-phase approximation in a deformed basis. It turned out that the effect of nuclear deformation plays a minor role compared with the one caused by neutron excess. A global parametrization of the strength in terms of neutron and proton numbers allowed us to derive a formula capable of predicting the summed E1 strengths in the pygmy region for a wide mass range of nuclides.
