Abstract
The existence of electronic symmetry breaking in the underdoped cuprates and its disappearance with increased hole density p are now widely reported. However, the relation between this transition and the momentum-space (k-space) electronic structure underpinning the superconductivity has not yet been established. Here, we visualize the Q = 0 (intra-unit-cell) and Q ≠ 0 (density-wave) broken-symmetry states, simultaneously with the coherent k-space topology, for Bi₂Sr₂CaCu₂O(8+δ) samples spanning the phase diagram 0.06 ≤ p ≤ 0.23. We show that the electronic symmetry-breaking tendencies weaken with increasing p and disappear close to a critical doping p(c) = 0.19. Concomitantly, the coherent k-space topology undergoes an abrupt transition, from arcs to closed contours, at the same p(c). These data reveal that the k-space topology transformation in cuprates is linked intimately with the disappearance of the electronic symmetry breaking at a concealed critical point.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To extend the usefulness of laparoscopic operations, a secure and easy method for the ligation of large vessels is needed. Herein we describe a novel ligation forceps that can be used as a ligature carrier and knot pusher. METHODS A 2-0 suture thread with a knot already tied near one end is hooked in the upper jaw of a novel ligation forceps. After the lower jaw is passed under the vessel or cystic duct, the forceps is closed. When one end of the thread is withdrawn, the knot is trapped in the indentation built into the lower jaw; the ligature is then passed under the pedicle. An extracorporeal ligation can then be performed continuously by the same forceps. RESULTS The origins of large vessels were ligated safely and easily with this device during 65 laparoscopic procedures (four total colectomies, 12 colectomies, and 49 gastrectomies). Following temporary hemostasis of accidental bleeding with clamping forceps, ligation hemostasis can also be performed using this instrument. CONCLUSION This novel ligation forceps permits the secure ligation of vessels or a cystic duct without the need for another device. The proposed method is both easy and inexpensive.

Free-flight measurement technique in the free-piston high-enthalpy shock tunnel. THE REVIEW OF SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS 2014; 85:045112. Abstract
A novel multi-component force-measurement technique has been developed and implemented at the impulse facility JAXA-HIEST, in which the test model is completely unrestrained during the test and thus experiences free-flight conditions for a period on the order of milliseconds. Advantages over conventional free-flight techniques include the complete absence of aerodynamic interference from a model support system and less variation in model position and attitude during the test itself. A miniature on-board data recorder, which was a key technology for this technique, was also developed in order to acquire and store the measured data. The technique was demonstrated in a HIEST wind-tunnel test campaign in which three-component aerodynamic force measurement was performed on a blunted cone of length 316 mm, total mass 19.75 kg, and moment of inertia 0.152 kgm(2). During the test campaign, axial force, normal forces, and pitching moment coefficients were obtained at angles of attack from 14° to 32° under two conditions: H0 = 4 MJ/kg, P0 = 14 MPa; and H0 = 16 MJ/kg, P0 = 16 MPa. For the first, low-enthalpy condition, the test flow was considered a perfect gas; measurements were thus directly compared with those obtained in a conventional blow-down wind tunnel (JAXA-HWT2) to evaluate the accuracy of the technique. The second test condition was a high-enthalpy condition in which 85% of the oxygen molecules were expected to be dissociated; high-temperature real-gas effects were therefore evaluated by comparison with results obtained in perfect-gas conditions. The precision of the present measurements was evaluated through an uncertainty analysis, which showed the aerodynamic coefficients in the HIEST low enthalpy test agreeing well with those of JAXA-HWT2. The pitching-moment coefficient, however, showed significant differences between low- and high-enthalpy tests. These differences are thought to result from high-temperature real-gas effects.

Observation of low- and high-energy Gamow-Teller phonon excitations in nuclei. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2014; 112:112502. Abstract
Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions in atomic nuclei are sensitive to both nuclear shell structure and effective residual interactions. The nuclear GT excitations were studied for the mass number A = 42, 46, 50, and 54 "f-shell" nuclei in ((3)He, t) charge-exchange reactions. In the (42)Ca → (42)Sc reaction, most of the GT strength is concentrated in the lowest excited state at 0.6 MeV, suggesting the existence of a low-energy GT phonon excitation. As A increases, a high-energy GT phonon excitation develops in the 6-11 MeV region. In the (54)Fe → (54)Co reaction, the high-energy GT phonon excitation mainly carries the GT strength. The existence of these two GT phonon excitations are attributed to the 2 fermionic degrees of freedom in nuclei.

Abstract
It has recently been reported that the transverse acetabular ligament (TAL) is helpful in determining the position of the acetabular component in total hip replacement (THR). In this study we used a computer-assisted navigation system to determine whether the TAL is useful as a landmark in THR. The study was carried out in 121 consecutive patients undergoing primary THR (134 hips), including 67 dysplastic hips (50%). There were 26 men (29 hips) and 95 women (105 hips) with a mean age of 60.2 years (17 to 82) at the time of operation. After identification of the TAL, its anteversion was measured intra-operatively by aligning the inferomedial rim of the trial acetabular component with the TAL using computer-assisted navigation. The TAL was identified in 112 hips (83.6%). Intra-observer reproducibility in the measurement of anteversion of the TAL was high, but inter-observer reproducibility was moderate. Each surgeon was able to align the trial component according to the target value of the angle of anteversion of the TAL, but it was clear that methods may differ among surgeons. Of the measurements of the angle of anteversion of the TAL, 5.4% (6 of 112 hips) were outliers from the safe zone. In summary, we found that the TAL is useful as a landmark when implanting the acetabular component within the safe zone in almost all hips, and to prevent it being implanted in retroversion in all hips, including dysplastic hips. However, as anteversion of the TAL may be excessive in a few hips, it is advisable to pay attention to individual variations, particularly in those with severe posterior pelvic tilt. Abstract
SUMMARY We isolate and characterize osteoblasts from humans without in vitro culture. These techniques should be broadly applicable to studying the pathogenesis of osteoporosis and other bone disorders. INTRODUCTION There is currently no data regarding the expression of specific genes or pathways in human osteoblasts that have not been subjected to extensive in vitro culture. Thus, we developed methods to rapidly isolate progressively enriched osteoblast populations from humans and characterized these cells. METHODS Needle bone biopsies of the posterior iliac crest were subjected to sequential collagenase digests. The cells from the second digest were stained with an alkaline phosphatase (AP) antibody, and the AP+ cells were isolated using magnetic cell sorting. RESULTS Relative to AP- cells, the AP+ cells contained virtually all of the mineralizing cells and were enriched for key osteoblast marker genes. The AP+ cells were further purified by depletion of cells expressing CD45, CD34, or CD31 (AP+/CD45/34/31- cells), which represented a highly enriched human osteoblast population devoid of hematopoietic/endothelial cells. These cells expressed osteoblast marker genes but very low to undetectable levels of SOST. We next used high-throughput RNA sequencing to compare the transcriptome of the AP+/CD45/34/31- cells to human fibroblasts and identified genes and pathways expressed only in human osteoblasts in vivo, but not in fibroblasts, including 448 genes unique to human osteoblasts. CONCLUSIONS We provide a detailed characterization of highly enriched human osteoblast populations without in vitro culture. These techniques should be broadly applicable to studying the pathogenesis of osteoporosis and other bone disorders.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To explore the possibility of a generally applicable tool for the immediate diagnosis of Parkinson's disease (PD) in its early stage, we compared the sensitivity and specificity of an acute levodopa challenge test with that of (123) I-metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) myocardial scintigraphy. MATERIALS AND METHODS A consecutive series of 45 patients with extrapyramidal symptoms were recruited to the acute levodopa challenge and evaluated for improvement by use of the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale motor scores. Of these patients, 32 of them were also examined by MIBG scintigraphy. The patients were followed up for at least 24 months, and 22 patients were diagnosed as having clinically definite PD. RESULTS The sensitivity and specificity of the acute levodopa challenge test to predict clinical diagnosis of PD were 81.8% and 81.8%, respectively, which were better than those obtained by MIBG scintigraphy (62.5% and 62.5%). In both early- and middle-stages of PD, the test gave better sensitivity than MIBG scintigraphy. CONCLUSIONS Considering that the well-established and frequently referred clinical diagnostic criteria require longitudinal observation for at least 24 months, the acute levodopa challenge test can be used as an immediate diagnostic tool for PD with sensitivity and specificity comparable to those of MIBG.

Abstract
An energy gap is, in principle, a dominant parameter in superconductivity. However, this view has been challenged for the case of high-Tc cuprates, because anisotropic evolution of a d-wave-like superconducting gap with underdoping has been difficult to formulate along with a critical temperature Tc. Here we show that a nodal-gap energy 2ΔN closely follows 8.5 kBTc with underdoping and is also proportional to the product of an antinodal gap energy Δ* and a square-root superfluid density √Ps for Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ, using low-energy synchrotron-radiation angle-resolved photoemission. The quantitative relations imply that the distinction between the nodal and antinodal gaps stems from the separation of the condensation and formation of electron pairs, and that the nodal-gap suppression represents the substantial phase incoherence inherent in a strong-coupling superconducting state. These simple gap-based formulae reasonably describe a crucial part of the unconventional mechanism governing Tc. In conventional superconductors, the critical temperature is proportional to the superconducting energy gap, but this is not so in unconventional superconductors. Anzai et al. identify an alternative relationship involving nodal and antinodal gaps in an underdoped cuprate superconductor.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate whether low mechanical loading on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) when ingesting a liquid diet affects the response properties of neurons in the trigeminal spinal tract subnucleus caudalis (Sp5C) in growing rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS Shortly after weaning, 2-week-old male rats were fed chow pellets (control) or a liquid diet (experimental). Firing activities of single sensory units were recorded from the Sp5C at 4, 5, 7, and 9 weeks. Neurons were functionally classified by their responsiveness to TMJ stimuli. The responses of Class II and III neurons to TMJ stimuli were investigated. RESULTS In both neuron classes, the firing threshold in the experimental group was significantly lower than in the control group at all time points, but remained static in the control group throughout the experimental period, whereas it peaked in the experimental group at 4 weeks, decreased at 5 weeks, and remained stable thereafter until 9 weeks. Similarly, the initial firing frequency was significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group, but remained static in the control group throughout the experimental period, whereas in the experimental group, it was at its lowest at 4 weeks, increased at 5 weeks, and stayed stable thereafter until 9 weeks. CONCLUSION Differences in TMJ loading arising from variable diet consistency during growth may affect the functional characteristics of Sp5C neurons.

Abstract
This review covers four topics. 1) Placental pathology in Himalayan mountain people. To determine morphological changes of the placenta at high altitude, pathological examination was made of 1000 Himalayan placentas obtained in Nepal and Tibet and the results compared with Japanese placentas delivered at sea level. Characteristic findings in the placental villi of the Himalayan group included high incidences of villous chorangiosis and chorangioma. These processes were clarified by ultrastructural observation. 2) Placentation in Sirenians. The giant Takikawa sea cow, which lived 5 million years ago, was discovered on Hokkaido, Japan. It was an ancestor of the dugong as well as the manatees. Sirenia, the sea cow group, shares a common ancestor with Proboscidea, the elephants, even though they now inhabit quite different environments. A comparison was made of their zonary endothelial type of placentation. 3) Placentation in sharks and rays. The remarkable placentation of hammerhead sharks and manta rays is described. 4) Placentation in the Antarctic minke whale. Placental tissue samples of this whale were obtained from the Japan Institute of Cetacean Research. In an ultrastructural study of the utero-placental junction, microfilamental processes of the allantochorionic zone and crypt formation were visualized.

Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS Epidemiological studies have revealed that obesity and diabetes mellitus are independent risk factors for the development of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and hepatocellular carcinoma. However, the debate continues on whether insulin resistance as such is directly associated with NASH and liver tumourigenesis. Here, we investigated the incidence of NASH and liver tumourigenesis in Irs1 ( -/- ) mice subjected to a long-term high-fat (HF) diet. Our hypothesis was that hepatic steatosis, rather than insulin resistance may be related to the pathophysiology of these conditions. METHODS Mice (8 weeks old, C57Bl/6J) were given free access to standard chow (SC) or an HF diet. The development of NASH and liver tumourigenesis was evaluated after mice had been on the above-mentioned diets for 60 weeks. Similarly, Irs1 ( -/- ) mice were also subjected to an HF diet for 60 weeks. RESULTS Long-term HF diet loading, which causes obesity and insulin resistance, was sufficient to induce NASH and liver tumourigenesis in the C57Bl/6J mice. Obesity and insulin resistance were reduced by switching mice from the HF diet to SC, which also protected these mice against the development of NASH and liver tumourigenesis. However, compared with wild-type mice fed the HF diet, Irs1 ( -/- ) mice fed the HF diet were dramatically protected against NASH and liver tumourigenesis despite the presence of severe insulin resistance and marked postprandial hyperglycaemia. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION IRS-1 inhibition might protect against HF diet-induced NASH and liver tumourigenesis, despite the presence of insulin resistance.

Downregulation of splicing factor SRSF3 induces p53β, an alternatively spliced isoform of p53 that promotes cellular senescence. Oncogene 2012; 32:2792-8. Abstract
Most human pre-mRNA transcripts are alternatively spliced, but the significance and fine-tuning of alternative splicing in different biological processes is only starting to be understood. SRSF3 (SRp20) is a member of a highly conserved family of splicing factors that have critical roles in key biological processes, including tumor progression. Here, we show that SRSF3 regulates cellular senescence, a p53-mediated process to suppress tumorigenesis, through TP53 alternative splicing. Downregulation of SRSF3 was observed in normal human fibroblasts undergoing replicative senescence, and was associated with the upregulation of p53β, an alternatively spliced isoform of p53 that promotes p53-mediated senescence. Knockdown of SRSF3 by short interfering RNA (siRNA) in early-passage fibroblasts induced senescence, which was associated with elevated expression of p53β at mRNA and protein levels. Knockdown of p53 partially rescued SRSF3-knockdown-induced senescence, suggesting that SRSF3 acts on p53-mediated cellular senescence. RNA pulldown assays demonstrated that SRSF3 binds to an alternatively spliced exon uniquely included in p53β mRNA through the consensus SRSF3-binding sequences. RNA crosslinking and immunoprecipitation assays (CLIP) also showed that SRSF3 in vivo binds to endogenous p53 pre-mRNA at the region containing the p53β-unique exon. Splicing assays using a transfected TP53 minigene in combination with siRNA knockdown of SRSF3 showed that SRSF3 functions to inhibit the inclusion of the p53β-unique exon in splicing of p53 pre-mRNA. These data suggest that downregulation of SRSF3 represents an endogenous mechanism for cellular senescence that directly regulates the TP53 alternative splicing to generate p53β. This study uncovers the role for general splicing machinery in tumorigenesis, and suggests that SRSF3 is a direct regulator of p53.

Evidence for the importance of extended Coulomb interactions and forward scattering in cuprate superconductors. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2012; 108:166404. Abstract
The prevalent view of the high-temperature superconducting cuprates is that their essential low-energy physics is captured by local Coulomb interactions. However, this view been challenged recently by studies indicating the importance of longer-range components. Motivated by this, we demonstrate the importance of these components by examining the electron-phonon (e-ph) interaction with acoustic phonons in connection with the recently discovered renormalization in the near-nodal low-energy (~8-15 meV) dispersion of Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8+δ). By studying its nontrivial momentum and doping dependence we conclude a predominance of forward scattering arising from the direct interplay between the e-ph and extended Coulomb interactions. Our results thus demonstrate how the low-energy renormalization can provide a pathway to new insights into how these interactions interplay with one another and influence pairing and dynamics in the cuprates.

Abstract
A compact fast core heating experiment is described. A 4-J 0.4-ns output of a laser-diode-pumped high-repetition laser HAMA is divided into four beams, two of which counterilluminate double-deuterated polystyrene foils separated by 100 μm for implosion. The remaining two beams, compressed to 110 fs for fast heating, illuminate the same paths. Hot electrons produced by the heating pulses heat the imploded core, emitting x-ray radiations >20 eV and yielding some 10(3) thermal neutrons.

Abstract
To investigate the pharmacokinetics of KW-7158 (CAS 214763-95-8), a new drug candidate for urinary incontinence and bladder hyperactivity, in male and female rats, we developed and validated a simultaneous quantification method for KW-7158 and its 2 metabolites, M1 and M2, in plasma using high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry with positive/negative ion-switching scan mode. The method was selective and sensitive to KW-7158, M1 and M2 with overall precision expressed as coefficient of variance less than 11.8% and accuracy (relative error) within ± 13.7% in intra- and inter-assay variability. This method was used to determine the plasma concentration of KW-7158, M1 and M2 after intravenous and oral administration of KW-7158 in male and female rats. KW-7158 was detected as a primary constituent in plasma in both administration routes. M1 was a major metabolite with the concentration ratio of 10-20% of KW-7158, and M2 was a minor metabolite. Pharmacokinetics of KW-7158 after oral administration was considered to be linear at doses from 0.01 to 1 mg/kg. Bioavailability was relatively high with the values of 69.4 ± 17.1% and 82.6 ± 20.0% at a dose of 0.1 mg/kg in male and female rats, respectively. There was a little gender difference in pharmacokinetics of KW-7158 and its metabolites in rats.

Abstract
SETTING Kyoto, Japan. OBJECTIVE To determine predictors of 5-year mortality in pulmonary Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare complex (MAC) disease. DESIGN Retrospective study of 164 patients diagnosed with pulmonary MAC disease between 1999 and 2005 and followed for 5 years. RESULTS Overall 5-year mortality was 28.0%. Among 117 patients with microbiological outcomes, 54 were treated (treated MAC patients) and 24 were not treated and did not experience sputum culture conversion during follow-up (untreated chronic MAC patients); 39 patients were not treated and experienced sputum culture conversion. Five-year all-cause overall mortality among the 78 patients with definite MAC disease (including treated and untreated chronic MAC patients) was 25.6%. The mortality rate was 33.3% for untreated chronic MAC patients only vs. 22.2% for treated MAC patients (P = 0.30). After adjustment for clinical, microbiological and radiological confounders, independent factors for 5-year mortality were a high Charlson comorbidity index in cases with definite MAC disease (hazard ratio [HR] 1.76) and untreated chronic MAC (HR 3.08), and presence of cavitary lesions in cases with definite MAC disease (HR 1.82) and treated MAC patients (HR 3.91). CONCLUSION Patients with cavitary lesions require immediate treatment for sputum culture conversion and to improve their chances of survival.

Complete electric dipole response and the neutron skin in 208Pb. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2011; 107:062502. Abstract
A benchmark experiment on (208)Pb shows that polarized proton inelastic scattering at very forward angles including 0° is a powerful tool for high-resolution studies of electric dipole (E1) and spin magnetic dipole (M1) modes in nuclei over a broad excitation energy range to test up-to-date nuclear models. The extracted E1 polarizability leads to a neutron skin thickness r(skin) = 0.156(-0.021)(+0.025) fm in (208)Pb derived within a mean-field model [Phys. Rev. C 81, 051303 (2010)], thereby constraining the symmetry energy and its density dependence relevant to the description of neutron stars.
