Abstract
The effect of salivary gland hypofunction (SGH) on oral wound healing is not well established. The present study evaluates the healing of extraction wounds in a SGH rat model. Experimental rats underwent removal of the submandibular and sublingual glands and ligation of the parotid ducts. Maxillary left first molars were extracted and healing was determined at 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 14, and 21 days after extraction. Salivary gland hypofunction caused a significant delay in socket healing. The inflammatory process was more intense and of longer duration. The formation of fibrous connective tissue and bone was relatively slow among the experimental rats. The results suggest that SGH patients undergoing oral surgery may have prolonged wound healing.

Abstract
Intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia (IPEH) usually presents as a cutaneous lesion consisting of a reactive proliferation of endothelial cells that arise in an organizing thrombus. This lesion can easily be mistaken for an angiosarcoma. Oral presentations are rare, and when they do occur the most common site is the lip. A rare case of IPEH affecting the mandibular buccal mucosa is described.

Abstract
Nodular fasciitis of the oral mucosa is a rare lesion. The present article describes an additional case and discusses the difficulties in the histologic diagnosis. The final diagnosis is based on immunohistochemistry and electron microscopic morphology. Nodular fasciitis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of swellings in the oral mucosa.

Abstract
Wound licking has been shown to promote extraoral wound healing among animals. Although the oral mucosa is bathed in saliva. Little information about the role of saliva in oral wound healing is found. The present study evaluates the healing of extraction wounds in desalivated rats. Experimental rats underwent sialadenectomy of the submandibular and sublingual glands and ligation of the parotid ducts. Maxillary left first molars were extracted. Rats were killed at 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 14, and 21 days after surgery and maxillae were prepared for light microscopy examination. Generally, a delay in socket healing in the desalivated rats was found. No differences were observed in blood clot formation. Replacement of the clot by granulation tissue was relatively slow concomitant with a longer inflammatory process. Bone formation kinetics were slower among the experimental rats.

Abstract
Mucoceles are common cystic lesions of the oral mucosa. Extravasation mucoceles are mainly found in the lower lip of young patients, whereas retention mucoceles are usually located in the cheek or palate of older patients. The disparate site and age incidences of extravasation and retention mucoceles suggest that these two types are not related and have different pathogenesis. Treatment modalities for mucoceles are reviewed, with special attention to the cryosurgical technique for the treatment of oral ranulas.

Abstract
1. The effectiveness of wound licking with parotid, submandibular or sublingual saliva on wound healing was evaluated in selectively sialadenectomized rats. 2. The rate of healing of experimentally induced cutaneous wounds was evaluated macroscopically by photography at 0, 2, 4 and 6 days after surgery. 3. Sialadenectomy of all major glands significantly slowed down wound healing compared to sham-operated controls. 4. Parotid licking had no effect compared to controls; submandibular licking and sublingual licking appeared to be very effective. 5. The results suggest that saliva promotes wound healing in experimentally induced cutaneous wounds by communal licking; this is a result of the submandibular and sublingual saliva and not the parotid saliva.

Abstract
The effectiveness of wound licking in the acceleration of wound healing was evaluated in selectively desalivated mice. Rate of healing of experimentally induced cutaneous wounds was evaluated macroscopically by photography at 0, 2, 4, and 6 days after wounding. Sialadenectomy of submandibular and sublingual glands significantly slowed down wound healing in animals caged together compared to sham-operated controls. Separate caging as compared to caging in groups slowed down healing in sham-operated animals at day 2 but not at day 4 and 6. No effect on the rate of healing in sialadenectomized mice was observed in separate caging compared to mice caged in groups. Ligation of the parotid duct had an insignificant effect. The rate of wound healing of sublingual sialadenectomized mice was slower than that of sham-operated controls, but not as slow as those of sublingual and submandibular sialadenectomized mice. The results suggest that the rate of healing of experimentally induced cutaneous wounds of mice is slowed down when licking is prevented by separate caging which confirms previous reports. Licking with submandibular saliva seems to be more effective than sublingual saliva. Parotid saliva or minor salivary glands secretions are the least effective.

Abstract
Lipid pigment (lipofuscin) was examined in perioral and tongue muscles of aging rats. While in perioral striated muscle the pigmented granules could not be found, a considerable accumulation with aging could be noted in the tongue muscle. Unlike the human tongue muscle, in which the pigmented granules were stored in clusters of different sizes at the nuclear poles of the muscle fibers, in rats, they were scattered randomly through the cytoplasm. The results of this study suggest that lipofuscin can be used as a marker for aging of the tongue muscle in the rat.

Abstract
Xenografts of Kiel bone in combination with autologous aspirated bone marrow were used to graft 20 cystic defects in the jaws. Sixteen cases (80%) were successful. Results were evaluated by clinical and radiographic follow-up of the patient up to 4 years (average 2.3 years) after surgery. Inability to create a water-tight closure followed by immediate secondary infection were considered as the causes for failure rather than rejection by the host.

Abstract
Rat parotid gland exposed to 20 Gy X-irradiation exhibits functional alteration 3 days after exposure. The flow rate of saliva and the uptake of alpha-aminoisobutyric acid by the gland was reduced to 50 per cent of values for the control nonirradiated glands. When the same gland was studied in an in vitro system it functioned normally. K+ release and alpha-aminoisobutyric acid uptake by the irradiated dispersed acinar cells was comparable to the control. Transport alteration from the circulatory system into the parotid gland may cause the initial radiation-induced damage.

Abstract
Alpha 1-Adrenergic-stimulated calcium efflux from rat parotid cell aggregates declines approx. 40% between 3 and 24 months of age, with the bulk of the reduction occurring between 12 and 24 months. Intracellular free calcium levels following alpha 1-adrenoceptor stimulation are also reduced about 40% between 3 and 24 months. No significant age differences in stimulation of inositol mono-, bis- or trisphosphate production are observed. However, the ability of inositol trisphosphate to directly stimulate calcium efflux is reduced by about 50% with increasing age. Concentrations of this inositol phosphate required for maximal calcium release do not change between 3 and 24 months. Differences in response are not due to a reduction in uptake of inositol trisphosphate into older cells, but suggest an age-related defect in the ability of inositol trisphosphate to liberate calcium from intracellular stores. Such dysfunction may be at least partially responsible for impaired alpha 1-adrenergic responsiveness during aging.

Abstract
The peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF), a benign gingival overgrowth, occurs mainly in the anterior portion of the maxilla in young adults. The size of the lesion is usually less than 1.5 cm. A unique case of POF in the posterior mandible of a 70-year-old female is presented. The lesion was 6 cm in the largest diameter. It is apparent that POF can become a sizeable tumor unless it is surgically excised in an early stage.

Abstract
The histological structure of these glands was examined in male rats in two adult age groups. In the submandibular gland, the proportional volume of acinar tissue at 6 months was reduced by 17 per cent at 24 months, being replaced partly by an increased proportion of ducts and partly by increased fibrosis. No volumetric changes occurred in the granular tubules. In the sublingual gland, no volumetric changes were detected in any component tissues. The findings support the concept that biological ageing in the salivary glands does not occur as a uniform generalized process throughout all the salivary tissues.

Abstract
The ability of acinar cells of the rat parotid gland to transport technetium pertechnetate (99mTcO-4) was examined. After intravenous injection, 99mTcO-4 was rapidly detected in parotid saliva. There was an excellent correlation between saliva and plasma 99mTcO-4 levels. The saliva to plasma ratio was always less than 1, consistent with the inability of rat parotid gland duct cells to concentrate the anion. Output of 99mTcO-4 by the parotid gland closely mimicked fluctuations in parotid saliva flow rate. In vitro, enzymatically dispersed parotid acinar cells accumulated 99mTcO-4 from the incubation medium in a biphasic manner. This uptake was partially blocked by 10(-4) M NaI. Cells which had accumulated 99mTcO-4 showed increased radionuclide efflux after exposure to 10(-5) M carbachol.

Abstract
Six cases of cytomegalovirus (CMV) colitis are described. The radiographic manifestations of this colitis are nonspecific and usually mimic the findings of ulcerative colitis with diffuse mucosal ulceration or granulomatous colitis with aphthous ulceration and skip areas. Terminal ileal involvement was noted in 1 patient. Nonspecific edema was present in 2 other cases. One patient demonstrated unusual cecal and ascending colonic nodularity due to pseudomembranes and, in another, large, flat discrete ulcerations were identified. Angiography, in 1 case, demonstrated marked hypervascularity and identified a site of hemorrhage in the ascending colon. With the radiographic identification of colitis in an immunocompromised patient, particularly a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), CMV colitis must be strongly considered in the differential diagnosis. Endoscopic biopsy is the most effective method of establishing the diagnosis.

Abstract
Rat submandibular saliva was collected at various times after retrograde infusion of water-soluble (Renografin 60%) or lipid-soluble (Lipiodol UF) radiographic contrast medium. Significant alterations in flow rate occurred following heavy parenchymal filling with both types of contrast media. Occasional changes in protein concentration, lactoperoxidase activity, and K+ levels were also noted. These changes were relatively mild and transient, and gland function had generally returned to normal by one wk after infusion. No alterations in glandular function were detected after infusion of contrast medium to a degree (ductal filling) comparable to that usually employed in clinical sialography.
