Abstract
PURPOSE To characterize response shift effects in patients with breast cancer (BC). METHODS The QLQ-C30, BR23, and EurQOL-EQ-5D were assessed at baseline and at the end of the first hospitalization. We used the then-test approach to characterize changes in internal standards by calculating the mean difference between the then-test (retrospective measure) and pre-test baseline QoL assessments. The Ideal Scale Approach was also used to assess changes in standards by comparing health and QoL expectancies between baseline and the end of the first hospitalization. Successive Comparison Approach was used to assess changes in values through the longitudinal assessment of the relative importance of EuroQOL dimensions. RESULTS The results of this study showed that recalibration RS effects occurred early after the first hospitalization for 6/15 dimensions of QLQ-C30 (emotional, cognitive, fatigue, insomnia, appetite loss, diarrhea) and 2/8 of BR-23 (future perspective, systemic therapy side effects). Moreover, health and QoL expectancies changed between the baseline and the end of the first hospitalization, and changes in values were seen for the self-care and usual activities dimensions of the EuroQOL-EQ-5D. CONCLUSIONS The occurrence of RS early after the first hospitalization suggests that it needs to be taken into account to interpret QoL changes in BC.

Abstract
We present experimental evidence confirming the recently established rich dynamic state diagram of asymmetric binary mixtures of soft colloidal spheres. These mixtures consist of glassy suspensions of large star polymers to which different small stars are added at varying concentrations. Using rheology and dynamic light scattering measurements along with a simple phenomenological analysis, we show the existence of re-entrance and multiple glassy states, which exhibit distinct features. Cooperative diffusion, as a probe for star arm interpenetration, is proven to be sensitive to the formation of the liquid pockets which signal the melting of the large-star-glass upon addition of small stars. These results provide ample opportunities for tailoring the properties of soft colloidal glasses.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to provide an initial assessment of the potential biologic activity of toceranib phosphate (Palladia®, Pfizer Animal Health, Madison, NJ, USA) in select solid tumours in dogs. Cases in which toceranib was used to treat dogs with apocrine gland anal sac adenocarcinoma (AGASACA), metastatic osteosarcoma (OSA), thyroid carcinoma, head and neck carcinoma and nasal carcinoma were included. Clinical benefit (CB) was observed in 63/85 (74%) dogs including 28/32 AGASACA [8 partial response (PR), 20 stable disease (SD)], 11/23 OSAs (1 PR and 10 SD), 12/15 thyroid carcinomas (4 PR and 8 SD), 7/8 head and neck carcinomas [1 complete response (CR), 5 PR and 1 SD] and 5/7 (1 CR and 4 SD) nasal carcinomas. For dogs experiencing CB, the median dose of toceranib was 2.8 mg kg(-1) , 36/63 (58.7%) were dosed on a Monday/Wednesday/Friday basis and 47/63 (74.6%) were treated 4 months or longer. Although these data provide preliminary evidence that toceranib exhibits CB in dogs with certain solid tumours, future prospective studies are necessary to define its true activity.

Abstract
279 Background: Frail and elderly patients (pts) with invasive bladder carcinoma (BC) are often unfit for surgery. Whether exclusive concomitant chemoradiotherapy (cCRT) without TURBT could be performed in a curative-intent remains uncertain. Methods: From 1996 to 2007, 68 pts were treated with exclusive cCRT. Median age was 77.5 years (70-91). WHO performance status (PS) at baseline were: PS 0: 27 pts; PS 1: 36 pts; PS 2; 4 pts; PS 3: 1 pt. 31 pts (45.5%) had a Charlson's score ≥ 5. Tumors were staged T1 (5 pts), T2 (44 pts), T3 (13 pts) and T4 (6 pts). 87.5% of the pts were clinically staged N0. Transuretral resection bladder tumor (TURBT) was incomplete and thus done for a diagnostic purpose only. 58 pts had an urothelial tumor (85.29%). External radiotherapy (ERT) was delivered with 1.8-2.0 daily fractions: median total dose of 63Gy [18Gy-69.4Gy] to the bladder and 92% of the pts had a whole pelvic ERT: median dose: 37.2Gy [18Gy-46Gy]. Drug was either cisplatin (CDDP) for 40 pts or carboplatin (CBDCA) for 28 pts. Overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) rates were evaluated. Results: The rate of compliant pts with the full course of cCRT was 77.9% (53 pts). 5 pts stopped cCRT for acute urinary adverse events (AE) whereas 8 pts stopped chemotherapy only for hematological or renal biochemical AE. For late toxicity, 5 pts had a G3/4 toxicity (1 rectal bleeding, 1 urinary bleeding, 1 recto-urinary fistula, 1 urinary incontinence and 1 urinary retention). Median follow-up was 4.6 years [CI95%: 3.43-5.93]. Of the 68 pts, 14 are alive (13 recurrence-free) amongst the 61 evaluable pts and 47 have died (24 recurrence-free). OS rates at 2 and 5 years were 50% (CI95%: [37.45%-61.44%]) and 31% (CI95%: [13.67%-38.43%]). PFS rates at 2 and 5 years were 37.4% [CI95%: 25.89%-48.82%] and 22% [CI95%: 12.25%- 33.61%], respectively. OS and PFS rates were worse for pts treated with CBDCA in comparison with those treated with CDDP (p= 0.01 for OS and p= 0.03 for PFS). Combined 5-FU did not impact either OS or PFS. Conclusions: cCRT for elderly pts with a BC was feasible. For selected pts with a good PS, the adequate drug that should be combined with a conventional full course of ERT remains CDDP. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Abstract
The cerium γ⇄α transition was investigated using high-pressure, high-temperature angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction measurements on both poly- and single-crystalline samples, explicitly addressing symmetry change and transformation paths. The isomorphic hypothesis of the transition is confirmed, with a transition line ending at a solid-solid critical point. The critical exponent is determined, showing a universal behavior that can be pictured as a liquid-gas transition. We further report an isomorphic transition between two single crystals (with more than 14% of volume difference), an unparalleled observation in solid-state matter interpreted in terms of dislocation-induced diffusionless first-order phase transformation.

Abstract
Abstract
Background: Triple-negative (TN) and HER2-positive (HER2+) breast cancers have usually a worse prognosis than the luminal subtypes despite an initial chemosensitivity. The aim of this single-center study was to compare pathologic complete response (pCR) rates, disease-free (DFS) and overall (OS) survivals rates after neoadjuvant therapy according to both HER2 and hormonal status.
Patients and Methods: Between 1978 and 2008, 461 patients were treated with neoadjuvant therapy at Georges-François Leclerc Cancer Center. Patients were classified in 3 groups: TN (defined by both estrogen/progesterone receptor negative and HER2 negative), HER2+ (3+ in immunohistochemistry or 2+ with amplification in fluorescence in situ hybridization) and HR+ (estrogen and/or progesterone receptor positive without HER2 overexpression or amplification). Median follow-up lasted 7.1 years [range: 0.49-29.8]. Number of events was 213 for DFS calculation and number of deaths was 150 for OS calculation. Response rates were compared using Chi2-tests. Survivals were calculated according to Kaplan-Meier and compared using log-rank tests. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards models were performed. The multivariate models were internally validated using bootstrapping (400 replications). Results: 86 of 461 were TN (19%), 125 were HER2+ (27%) and 250 were HR+ (54%). Patients with TN and HER2+ breast cancer were younger (p=0.032), had more inflammatory cancer (p=0.033) and aggressive tumors (SBR 3, P<0.001). Pathologic complete response rate (grades 1 and 2 of Chevallier's classification) was significantly higher for TN (22.4%) and HER2+ (29.6%) than in for HR+ (3.6%) (P<0.001). In univariate analysis, the following characteristics were related to a higher pCR rate: smaller clinical size (p=0.029), higher grade tumor (p=0.001) and HER2+ or TN status (P<0.001). In multivariate analysis, only tumor grade (p=0.022) and hormonal/HER2 status (p=0.003) were independently associated with pCR.
Median DFS was 4.4years for TN, 7.8y for HER2+ and 9y for HR+ (p=0.003, logrank test). In HER2+ patients, neoadjuvant trastuzumab was associated with a higher DFS (8.65 vs. 3.24y, p=0.002). Patients who achieved a pCR had a higher DFS (p=0.015) than those with only partial pathologic response (median=6.9y vs. 12.7y). In multivariate analysis, pCR remained significant (HR (bootstrapping) = 0.5 [IC95%, 0.28-0.91], p=0.023).
Median OS was 6.4y for TN, 15.1y for HER2+ and 13.1y for HR+ (P<0.001, logrank test). Patients who achieved a pCR had a higher OS (p=0.004) than those with non-pCR (median=not reached vs. 10.9y). In multivariate analysis, OS was lower for patients>50years (HR (bootstrapping)=1.79 [IC95%, 1.23-2.60], p=0.002), in TN subgroup (HR=2.46 [IC95%, 1.5-4.03], p=0.001) and when pCR was not achieved (HR=0.28, [IC95%, 0.12-0.66], p=0.003).
Conclusion: After neoadjuvant therapy, TN breast cancers have a worse prognosis despite their initial chemosensitivity with a high pCR rate. HER2+ have a lower DFS than HR+/HER2- breast cancers but a better OS, mainly due to anti-HER2 targeted therapies. Pathologic complete response is a strong independent prognostic factor after neoadjuvant therapy for breast cancer.

Abstract
The evaluation of plane-plane contact force has become a big issue in micro-/nano research, for example in microassembly. However with the lack of effective experimental equipments, the research on plane-plane contact has been limited to theoretical formulations or virtual simulation. In this paper, a microforce sensor and precision parallel robot integrated system is proposed for the microforce measurement of plane-plane contact. In the proposed system, the two objects are fixed on the parallel robot end-platform and the microforce sensor probe tip, respectively, and the high precision robot system is employed to provide six degree-of-freedom motions between both objects. So it is convenient for the microforce measurement between the planar objects with different orientations. As a significant application, the proposed system is utilized for measurements of pull-off force between planar objects, in which the validation of the system is demonstrated in practice. The proposed microforce measurement system is generic, which can be extended to a variety of microforce measurements in plane-plane contact.

Abstract
The ultraintense short pulse laser pulses incident on solid targets can generate energetic protons. In addition to their potentially important applications such as in cancer treatments and proton fast ignition, these protons are essential to understand the complex physics of intense laser plasma interaction. To better characterize these laser-produced protons, we designed and constructed a novel spectrometer that will not only measure proton energy distribution with high resolution but also provide its angular characteristics. The information obtained from this spectrometer compliments those from commonly used diagnostics including radiochromic film packs, CR39 nuclear track detectors, and nonimaging magnetic spectrometers. The basic characterizations and sample data from this instrument are presented.

Abstract
Since 1998, the Aquitaine-Limousin branch of the French Blood Institute has set up a parvovirus B19 (PV B19) systematic screening on each unit of plasma to be treated by solvent-detergent procedure for virus inactivation. Parvovirus B19 nucleic acid systematic testing in plasma pools became mandatory since 2005 (European monograph "Human plasma" - pooled and treated for virus inactivation). The French competent state authority (AFSSAPS) has decided to introduce this test as a part of the external quality control of labile blood products. This process is related to the harmonization of quality control practice realised on blood products in Europe even if the human plasma pooled and treated for virus inactivation by solvent-detergent is considered in France as a blood labile component. Implementation of this test required a validation step and a close cooperation between AFSSAPS and Aquitaine-Limousin blood transfusion centre. Validation consisted in perfecting a semi-quantitative, real-time nucleic acid testing method with automated extraction. This collaborative study leads us to control 1642 plasma pools. All the results were under the threshold of 10,0 IU/microL. AFSSAPS's results were in agreement with those of Aquitaine-Limousin's blood transfusion center who carry out the parvovirus B19 screening both on fresh frozen plasma units composing the pool and on plasma pools.
