Risky behavior of bus commuters and bus drivers in Karachi, Pakistan

Buses account for a disproportionate number of road traffic accident fatalities in Karachi, Pakistan and other developing countries. Potentially dangerous bus driving and commuting practices that increase risk of road accidents and the effect of traffic police on bus behavior are evaluated. A total of 250 episodes each of disembarking and embarking commuters, buses stopping and moving on the road at ten of Karachi's highest risk intersections for traffic injuries were observed. Of the disembarking passengers, 33% did not wait for the bus to stop; 54% stepped off in the center of the road and 84% did not look out for traffic. Among the embarking commuters, 38% got on moving buses; 73% climbed on buses filled to their outer foot boards and 83% waited for buses on the street. Males were more likely than females to jump off a moving bus (43% versus 1.6%, P < 0.001), get on a moving bus (49% versus 12%, P < 0.001), and run to catch a bus (45% versus 8%, P < 0.001). At the bus stops, 30% of the buses did not stop completely; 46% stopped away from the stop and 79% stopped in the center of the road. Where traffic police were present buses were more likely to race (9% versus 3%, P = 0.05) and to cut off other vehicles (13% versus 2%, P = 0.001) than where police were absent. Risky behavior is common among both Karachi bus drivers and bus commuters. The traditional efforts to regulate bus traffic through traffic police is ineffective.

First Report of Powdery Mildew of Greenhouse-grown Tomatoes in Alberta, Canada

In Alberta, powdery mildew disease of greenhouse-grown tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) appeared for the first time in 1995 as circular white colonies on leaves, petioles, and stems. Since then it has been found every year and is becoming an economically important disease of tomatoes. This is the first report of the disease from Alberta, Canada. In Canada, powdery mildew on greenhouse tomatoes was previously reported in 1994 from the province of Quebec (1). The pathogen had unbranched conidiophores with average length and width of 62.3 μm and 8.5 μm, respectively. Conidia were clear or hyaline, elliptical to oval in shape, and were borne singly or in short chains. Average length and width of conidia were 36.0 μm and 17.6 μm, respectively. The conidia contained numerous vacuoles but fibrosin bodies were not observed. Germ tubes were straight and formed at the ends or very close to the ends of conidia. Rarely, a conidium produced two germ tubes. Cleistothecia were not found. Six-week-old, greenhouse-grown, healthy tomato cv. Trust plants were inoculated by shaking conidia from powdery mildew-infected plants onto the leaves of the healthy plants. The plants developed powdery mildew symptoms within 9 days after the inoculation. The symptoms on inoculated plants and morphological characteristics of the pathogen were similar to those for naturally infected plants. Based on the characteristics of the asexual stage, the pathogen was identified as an Erysiphe sp. until its identity is confirmed by the characteristics of its sexual stage. An Erysiphe sp. has also been reported to cause powdery mildew of greenhouse-grown tomatoes in Canada (1), the U.S. (3), and Spain (2). Optimal temperature and relative humidity for germination of conidia of the pathogen were 20 to 25°C and >90%, respectively. Myclobutanil, fenarimol, sulfur, triademefon, and triforine showed promise for effective management of this disease. Myclobutanil and sulfur are now registered for control of this disease in Canada. Since cleistothecium has not been found, there is a need to identify the sources of primary inoculum to understand the disease cycle and effective management of the disease. References: (1) R. R. Genetic analysis of inflammatory bowel disease in a large European cohort supports linkage to chromosomes 12 and 16

BACKGROUND & AIMS

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a complex disorder of unknown etiology. Epidemiological investigations suggest a genetic basis for IBD. Recent genetic studies have identified several IBD linkages. The significance of these linkages will be determined by studies in large patient collections. The aim of this study was to replicate IBD linkages on chromosomes 12 and 16 in a large European cohort.

METHODS

Three hundred fifty-nine affected sibling pairs from 274 kindreds were genotyped using microsatellite markers spanning chromosomes 12 and 16. Affection status of the sibling pairs was defined as Crohn's disease (CD) or ulcerative colitis (UC).

RESULTS

Nonparametric statistical analyses showed linkage for both chromosomes. Two-point results for chromosome 12 peaked at D12S303 (logarithm of odds [LOD], 2.15; P = 0.003) for CD and at D12S75 (LOD, 0.92; P = 0.03) for UC. Multipoint analyses produced a peak LOD of 1.8 for CD. Chromosome 16 showed linkage for CD at marker D16S415 (LOD, 1.52; P = 0.007). Multipoint support peaked above markers D16S409 and D16S411 (LOD, 1.7).

CONCLUSIONS

These data are consistent with linkage of IBD to chromosomes 12 and 16. The replication of genetic risk loci in a large independent family collection indicates important and common susceptibility genes in these regions and will facilitate identification of genes involved in IBD.
