Abstract
Although generally ascribed to the presence of defects, an ultimate assignment of the different contributions to the emission spectrum in terms of surface states and deep levels in ZnO nanostructures is still lacking. In this work we unambiguously give first evidence that zinc vacancies at the (1010) nonpolar surfaces are responsible for the green luminescence of ZnO nanostructures. The result is obtained by performing an exhaustive comparison between spatially resolved cathodoluminescence spectroscopy and imaging and ab initio simulations. Our findings are crucial to control undesired recombinations in nanostructured devices.

Abstract
Cadmium sulfide quantum dots (CdS QDs) are used in the manufacture of a number of electronics products. Their small size allows their ready entry into living cells, but as yet no attempt has been made to assess their toxicity. Our aim was to exploit two Ds transposition-induced mutant lines of Arabidopsis thaliana which tolerated exposure to CdS QDs to identify the genetic basis of their tolerance. Both a genome-wide top-down (from mutant to genes) and a bottom-up (from gene expression to phenotype) approach were applied. The differential responses of the mutants compared to the wild type showed that sensitivity to CdS QDs was unrelated to sensitivity to Cd(2+) ions. A transcriptomic analysis identified a number of genes whose transcript abundance was correlated with the tolerance. The phenotype of one of the mutants was correlated with the overexpression of ELM2, an MYB containing gene visited by a Ds transposon. Segregation analysis showed that the genetic basis of CdS QDs tolerance in both mutants was monogenic. The phenotype of the other mutant could be explained by the mutation of HCF101, a gene involved in photosynthesis.

Abstract
Organic Electrochemical transistors (OECTs) present unique features for their strategic combination with biomedical interfaces, simple and low voltage operation regime and sensing ability in aqueous environment, but they still lack selectivity, so that a significant effort in research is devoted to overcome this limitation. Here, we focus on the diffusion properties of molecular species in the electrolyte, which opportunely analyzed, modeled and compared to experimental data, serve as a simple and direct key factor in the recognition of species during OECT sensing. Specifically, we model the transient behavior of an OECT considering the effect of diffusion of the target species in the electrolyte. In doing so, we develop a general method that can be used to differentiate and distinguish different molecules from a complex mixture, on the basis of their diffusivity and thus mass. More importantly, the model can be realistically used to determine the physical characteristics of the transported species in a solution from a simple fitting procedure. On the basis of the obtained results, we discuss the contribution that our study could bring to OECT architecture to realize a new generation of devices with improved sensitivity, selectivity and reliability.

Abstract
We describe and theoretically analyze here a phenomenon which can take place in a system with two different compartments, each containing the same chemicals, which undergo reactions on the surface of both sides of the membrane which separates the two compartments, in the case where the membrane permeabilities to the various chemicals are different and diffusion is fast. There are two main reasons of interest for this kind of system. First, if the overall system is isolated, starting from the case where the initial concentrations of the chemicals are the same in the two phases, one observes the formation of a transient concentration difference. This difference eventually vanishes, although it might last for a long time, depending upon the value of the relevant parameters. The second reason of interest is that, in the case of an open system, one can achieve a steady-state value of the concentration of some chemicals in the smaller compartment which is higher than that in the external one. These results may prove important, inter alia, to understand the behavior of lipid vesicles in water, a topic which is important for studies on the origin of life as well as for possible future applications.

Abstract
A nanocomposite material is obtained by coupling superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NP) and vapor phase grown zinc oxide nanostructures with 'tetrapod' morphology (ZnO TP). The aim is the creation of a multifunctional material which retains the attractive features of ZnO (e.g. surface reactivity, strong UV emission, piezoelectricity) together with added magnetism. Structural, morphological, optical, magnetic and functional characterization are performed. In particular, the high saturation magnetization of Fe3O4 NP (above 50 A m(2) kg(-1)), the strong UV luminescence and the enhanced photocatalytic activity of coupled nanostructures are discussed. Thus the nanocomposite turns out to be suitable for applications in energy harvesting and conversion, gas- and bio-sensing, bio-medicine and filter-free photocatalysis.

Abstract
ZnO nanotetrapods have recently been exploited for the realization of high-sensitivity gas sensors, but they are affected by the typical drawbacks of metal-oxides, i.e., poor selectivity and a relatively high working temperature. On the other hand, it has been also demonstrated that the combined use of nanostructured metal oxides and organic molecules can improve the gas sensing performance sensitivity or selectivity, even at lower temperatures. A gas sensor device, based on films of interconnected ZnO nanotetrapods properly functionalized by titanyl phthalocyanine (TiOPc), has been realized in order to combine the high surface to volume ratio and structural stability of the crystalline ZnO nanostructures with the enhanced sensitivity of the semiconducting TiOPc molecule, especially at low temperature. The electronic properties of the resulting nanohybrid material are different from those of each single component. The response of the hybrid nanostructure towards different gases has been compared with that of ZnO nanotetrapod without functionalization in order to highlight the peculiar properties of the hybrid interaction(s). The dynamic response in time has been studied for different gases and temperatures; in particular, an increase in the response to NO2 has been observed, even at room temperature. The formation of localized p-n heterojunctions and the possibility of exchanging charge carriers at the hybrid interface is shown to be crucial for the sensing mechanism.

Abstract
One of the major challenges in complex systems biology is that of providing a general theoretical framework to describe the phenomena involved in cell differentiation, i.e., the process whereby stem cells, which can develop into different types, become progressively more specialized. The aim of this study is to briefly review a dynamical model of cell differentiation which is able to cover a broad spectrum of experimentally observed phenomena and to present some novel results.

Abstract
Zinc oxide (ZnO) is one of the most promising materials for realizing three-dimensional (3D) nanostructured transparent conducting oxides (TCOs) on large scale, because it is cheap, it can be modified with large concentrations of trivalent elements (such Al, Ga or In) and it is characterized by good electron mobility, wide bandgap and visible-range transparency. But, above all, it can be easily obtained in the form of different nanostructures with a large number of growth techniques. A solution-free and catalyst-free approach has been explored here by the vapor phase synthesis of vertically aligned ZnO nanorods on ZnO:Al (AZO) films grown by pulsed electron deposition (PED). The obtained nanostructured TCOs resulted to be homogeneous on large areas and easily patternable by means of mechanical masks. The morphology, crystalline structure, electrical and optical properties of the obtained samples have been characterized in depth. The possible use of such a nanostructured TCO in excitonic (e.g. DSSC) or low-reflectivity traditional solar cells is discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Factor (F)V Leiden and the prothrombin 20210A mutation (PTm) are associated with the occurrence of obstetric complications, including pregnancy-related venous thromboembolism (VTE). It is not known whether family members of women with FV Leiden or PTm and previous obstetric complications have a higher risk of VTE or adverse obstetric outcomes. METHODS A retrospective family study including 563 relatives of 177 women with previous adverse outcomes carrying FV Leiden or PTm, referred between April 1993 and June 2010. A history of obstetric complications and VTE was obtained. Prevalence of VTE and obstetric complications in relatives with and without inherited thrombophilias was compared. Adjusted odd ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using logistic regression models that controlled for predictors (age, FV Leiden and PTm). RESULTS Relatives carrying FV Leiden had a significant and independent risk for obstetric complications (OR: 1.98, 95% CI 1.03-3.83); this risk was not observed in the presence of PTm (OR: 1.03, 95% CI 0.46-2.32). The presence of FV Leiden or PTm in heterozygosis was significantly and independently associated with the occurrence of VTE (OR: 5.2, 95% CI: 1.70-15.91). Severe thrombophilias were strong risk factors for VTE (OR: 23.2, 95% CI: 6.0-89.85). Male gender was a significant and independent risk factor for VTE (OR: 3.49, 95% CI: 1.51-8.05). The risk did not change when relatives of women with a previous pregnancy-related VTE were excluded (OR: 3.49, 95% CI: 1.51-8.05). CONCLUSIONS Knowledge of thrombophilia status may help to better define the obstetric and thromboembolic risks in asymptomatic family members of women who suffered from obstetric complications.

Abstract
Thyroid hormones, insulin growth factor I (IGF-I) and non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) represent important hormonal and metabolic factors associated with perinatal growth and maturation. Their action could be influenced by the type of parturition and the health status of the foal and therefore the aim of this work is to evaluate their plasma concentrations in newborn foals during the first 2 wks of life. Three groups of subjects were enrolled: 15 healthy foals born by spontaneous parturition, 24 healthy foals born by induced parturition and 26 pathologic foals. From each of the healthy foals, blood was collected at 10, 20 and 30 minutes, 3 and 12 hours from birth, daily from Day 1 to Day 7, and at Day 10 and 14 of life. In pathologic foals samples were collected twice a day from the day of admission at the hospital until the day of discharge or death. Thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) and IGF-I were analyzed by radioimmunoassay and NEFA by enzymatic-colorimetric methods. In all the three groups a declining trend of T3 and T4 plasma concentrations was detectable, with lower levels in the pathologic group compared to healthy foals. Spontaneous foals showed higher levels of T3 at 7 d compared to induced foals, while T4 levels were higher in spontaneous vs. induced foals before 6 h of life, at three and seven days. IGF-I showed increasing plasma concentrations in all three considered groups. No differences were found between healthy and pathologic foals. NEFA in spontaneous and induced healthy foals showed a declining trend with higher levels during the first hours of life. Pathologic foals presented higher levels compared to spontaneous foals only at 24 h and 10 d. These data suggest that the type of foaling could influence the reference ranges for thyroid hormones. Moreover, pathologic foals showed some hormonal and metabolic differences related to their health status. Above all changes of thyroid hormones levels, early in postnatal life, could be a cause, and not only a consequence, of the diseased condition of these foals.

Abstract
Autocatalytic cycles are rather widespread in nature and in several theoretical models of catalytic reaction networks their emergence is hypothesized to be inevitable when the network is or becomes sufficiently complex. Nevertheless, the emergence of autocatalytic cycles has been never observed in wet laboratory experiments. Here, we present a novel model of catalytic reaction networks with the explicit goal of filling the gap between theoretical predictions and experimental findings. The model is based on previous study of Kauffman, with new features in the introduction of a stochastic algorithm to describe the dynamics and in the possibility to increase the number of elements and reactions according to the dynamical evolution of the system. Furthermore, the introduction of a temporal threshold allows the detection of cycles even in our context of a stochastic model with asynchronous update. In this study, we describe the model and present results concerning the effect on the overall dynamics of varying (a) the average residence time of the elements in the reactor, (b) both the composition of the firing disk and the concentration of the molecules belonging to it, (c) the composition of the incoming flux.
