Abstract
Zinc borates are very important industrial materials with applications that include fire retardants and preservatives in wood. In this work, we report the preparation of three novel zinc borates: [Zn(NH3)3B4O5(OH)4]·H2O (ZB1), Zn3(H2B3O7)2·2NH3·4H2O (ZB2), and [Zn(NH3)4][B4O5(OH)4]·4H2O (ZB3). The solid phases were characterized by elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction, infrared and Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and thermal analysis. The crystal structures of ZB1 (monoclinic, Cc, a = 12.1972(8), b = 7.8314(5), c = 12.1441(8) Å and β = 107.404(5)°) and ZB3 (orthorhombic, Pbca, a = 15.0796(9), b = 11.8853(5) and c = 16.7606(8) Å) were determined. They are novel neutral Zn-polyborate complexes [Zn(NH3)3B4O5(OH)4] hydrate and [Zn(NH3)4][B4O5(OH)4] tetrahydrate salt, respectively. The complete assignment of infrared and Raman spectra was performed theoretically using DFT calculations. For ZB2 (obtained as a polycrystalline phase), powder X-ray diffraction confirmed a single phase and allowed the determination of the unit cell parameters and lattice type (rhombohedral, a = 36.78076 (6), c = 12.20052 (3) Å) with an expected formula Zn3(H2B3O7)2·2NH3·4H2O suggesting that this compound is a complex triborate. Furthermore, a low-cost scalable synthetic procedure for ZB1 starting from zinc oxide and boric acid in ammonia solution with a high yield is also reported.

Abstract
Trypanosoma equiperdum is the causative agent of dourine, a venereal disease in horses and donkeys. This parasite has a widely distribution, is found in Africa, Asia, Southern and Eastern Europe, Russia, Mexico and Venezuela. The T. equiperdum is morphologically indistinguishable to other Trypanozoon species, however differs from other mammalian trypanosomes due to the fact that it is primarily a tissue parasite, generating cutaneous plaques, swelling of genitalia and neurological signs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the trypanocidal effectiveness of a set of derivatives of thiosemicarbazones on a T. equiperdum ex vivo culture. All compounds appeared to have trypanocidal activity, however one of them shown better solubility and a dose-dependent effect. The median inhibitory concentration (IC50) was 1.2μM. The selected compound exhibits a greater inhibitory activity than diminazene aceturate, a common drug for animal trypanosomosis treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Locoregional lymph node ultrasound is not typically included in guidelines as part of the staging process prior to sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB). The objective of the present study was to make a clinical and economic analysis of lymph node ultrasound prior to SLNB. MATERIALS AND METHODS We performed a retrospective study of 384 patients with clinical stage I-II primary melanoma who underwent locorregional lymph node ultrasound (with or without ultrasound-guided biopsy) prior to SLNB between 2004 and 2015. We evaluated the reliability and cost-effectiveness of the strategy. RESULTS Use of locorregional lymph node ultrasound avoided SLNB in 23 patients (6%). Ultrasound had a sensitivity of 46% and specificity of 76% for the detection of metastatic lymph nodes that were not clinically palpable. False negatives were significantly more common in patients aged over 60 years and in tumors with a thickness of less than 2mm. The staging process using SLNB and ultrasound with ultrasound-guided biopsy produced an increase of €16.30 in the unit price. Our cost-effectiveness analysis identified the staging protocol with ultrasound and SLNB as the dominant strategy, with a lower cost-effectiveness ratio than the alternative, consisting of SLNB alone (8,095.24 vs. €28,605.00). CONCLUSIONS Ultrasound with ultrasound-guided biopsy for the diagnostic staging of melanoma prior to SLNB is a useful and cost-effective tool. This procedure does not substitute SLNB, though it does allow to avoid SLNB in a not insignificant proportion of patients.

Abstract
Chromosome 1q gains and 13q deletions are common cytogenetic aberrations in multiple myeloma (MM) that confer a poor prognosis. There are several techniques for the targeted study of these alterations, but interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) is the current gold standard. The aim of the present study was to validate quantitative PCR (qPCR) as an alternative to FISH studies in CD138+-enriched plasma cells (PCs) from MM patients at diagnosis. We analyzed 1q gains and 13q deletions by qPCR in 57 and 60 MM patients, respectively. qPCR applicability was 84 and 88% for 1q and 13q, respectively. The qPCR and FISH methods had a sensitivity and specificity of 88 and 71% for 1q gains, and 79 and 100% for 13q deletions. A second qPCR assay for each region was carried out to confirm the previous results. Paired qPCR (two assays) and FISH results were available from 53 MM patients: 26 for 1q amplification and 27 for 13q deletion. qPCR assays gave concordant results (qPCR-consistent) in 20 of the 26 (77%) 1q gains and 25 of the 27 (93%) 13q deletions. Considering only the consistent data, the overall concordance among qPCR and FISH was 85 and 100% for 1q gains and 13q deletions, respectively. Our results show a substantial agreement between qPCR and the gold standard FISH technique, indicating the potential of qPCR as an alternative approach, particularly when the starting material is too scarce or cells are too damaged to obtain accurate results from FISH studies.

Abstract
Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is the leading cause of severe congenital abnormalities. CMV immunoglobulin (CMVIG) may lower risk for symptomatic disease in congenital CMV infection. In a twin pregnancy, only one fetus shows CMV infection, raising a dilemma about intervention since the uninfected fetus would be exposed to treatment unnecessarily. CMVIG (2 × 200 U/kg) was given due to high viral load and development of an intraventricular cyst. The cyst growth plateaued, no other brain damage developed, and at 8 months, the infant was symptom-free. CMVIG appears appropriate to treat intrauterine CMV infection in this setting.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the capacity shown by 3 self-assessment questionnaires validated in Spanish (B-SAQ, OAB-V8 and OAB-V3) for the screening of patients with overactive bladder (OAB) in clinical practice. MATERIAL AND METHOD A noninterventional observational study was conducted of men and women older than 30 years evaluated in primary care consultations. The clinical diagnosis of OAB was conducted through a case history review, physical examination, urine analysis, ultrasonography and voiding diary. The presence of coping strategies and discomfort was investigated. The differential diagnosis was established in patients with symptoms not due to OAB. We assessed the correlation between the clinical tests and diagnosis (kappa <.4 poor; .4-.6 moderate; >.6 good; >.8 excellent) and ROC curves to define the capacity to screen the assessed questionnaires. RESULTS A total of 411 patients were investigated. OAB was detected in 207 (50.4%) patients, other causes for the lower urinary tract symptoms were detected in 63 (15.3%), and 141 (34.3%) patients had no diagnosis. The voiding diary suggested OAB in 197 (47.9%) patients. The correlation between the clinical diagnosis and the diagnosis based on the voiding diary was .702. The correlation between the clinical diagnosis and B-SAQ, OAB-V8 and OAB-V3 was .59, .673 and .732, respectively. The area under the curve (AUC) was .799 for B-SAQ; .837 for OAB-V8 and .867 for OAB-V3 (OAB-V3 vs. OAB-V8, P=.02; OAB-V3 vs. B-SAQ, P<.0001). The AUC for the voiding diary was .852 (OAB-V3 vs. diary, P=.47). CONCLUSIONS OAB-V3 is a simple questionnaire with excellent performance for screening OAB in a specific population and that is superior to the OAB-V8 and B-SAQ. The accuracy of the voiding diary for the same indication is equivalent to that of the OAB-V3 in our setting.

Abstract
CONTEXT Born-again stars offer us a unique possibility of studying the evolution of the circumstellar envelope of evolved stars in human timescales. To present, most of the observations of the circumstellar material in these stars have been limited to study the relatively hot gas and dust. In other evolved stars, the emission from rotational transitions of molecules, such as CO, is commonly used to study the cool component of their circumstellar envelopes. Thus, the detection and study of molecular gas in born-again stars would be of great importance to understand their composition and chemical evolution. In addition, the molecular emission would be an invaluable tool to explore the physical conditions, kinematics and formation of asymmetric structures in the circumstellar envelopes of these evolved stars. However, until now, all attempts to detect molecular emission from the cool material around born-again stars have failed. AIMS We searched for emission from rotational transitions of molecules in the hydrogen-deficient circumstellar envelopes of born-again stars to explore the chemical composition, kinematics, and physical parameters of the relatively cool gas. METHODS We carried out observations using the APEX and IRAM 30m telescopes to search for molecular emission toward four well studied born-again stars, V4334 Sgr, V605 Aql, A30 and A78, that are thought to represent an evolutionary sequence. RESULTS We detected for the first time emission from HCN and H13CN molecules toward V4334 Sgr, and CO emission in V605 Aql. No molecular emission was detected above the noise level toward A30 and A78. The detected lines exhibit broad linewidths ≳150 km s-1, which indicates that the emission comes from gas ejected during the born-again event, rather than from the old planetary nebula. A first estimate of the H12CN/H13CN abundance ratio in the circumstellar environment of V4334 Sgr is ≈3, which is similar to the value of the 12C/13C ratio measured from other observations. We derived a rotational temperature of T rot=13±1 K, and a total column density of N HCN=1.6±0.1×1016 cm-2 for V4334 Sgr. This result sets a lower limit on the amount of hydrogen that was ejected into the wind during the born-again event of this source. For V605 Aql, we obtained a lower limit for the integrated line intensities I 12C/I 13C>4.

Abstract
Antimitotics binding at the colchicine site of tubulin are important antitumour and vascular disrupting agents. Pyridines and azines are privileged scaffolds in medicinal chemistry and in recent years many colchicine site ligands (CSL) have incorporated them into their structures with the aim of improving their pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics properties. CSL have been classified according to their chemical structures and the chemical structures of the pyridine and azine containing antimitotic compounds are described. The designed principles behind the structural modifications and the achieved effect on the biological activity upon inclusion of these heterocycles are also discussed. Lessons from the achievements and failures have been extracted and future perspectives delineated.

Abstract
Flow cytometry has become a highly valuable method to monitor minimal residual disease (MRD) and evaluate the depth of complete response (CR) in bone marrow (BM) of multiple myeloma (MM) after therapy. However, current flow-MRD has lower sensitivity than molecular methods and lacks standardization. Here we report on a novel next generation flow (NGF) approach for highly sensitive and standardized MRD detection in MM. An optimized 2-tube 8-color antibody panel was constructed in five cycles of design-evaluation-redesign. In addition, a bulk-lysis procedure was established for acquisition of ⩾107 cells/sample, and novel software tools were constructed for automatic plasma cell gating. Multicenter evaluation of 110 follow-up BM from MM patients in very good partial response (VGPR) or CR showed a higher sensitivity for NGF-MRD vs conventional 8-color flow-MRD -MRD-positive rate of 47 vs 34% (P=0.003)-. Thus, 25% of patients classified as MRD-negative by conventional 8-color flow were MRD-positive by NGF, translating into a significantly longer progression-free survival for MRD-negative vs MRD-positive CR patients by NGF (75% progression-free survival not reached vs 7 months; P=0.02). This study establishes EuroFlow-based NGF as a highly sensitive, fully standardized approach for MRD detection in MM which overcomes the major limitations of conventional flow-MRD methods and is ready for implementation in routine diagnostics.

Abstract
Zygosaccharomyces rouxii is the main spoilage yeast of grape juice concentrates. Detection and identification of Z. rouxii during the production of grape juice concentrate is critical to prevent spoilage in the final product. In this work, three grape juice concentrate processing plants were assessed by identifying osmophilic yeasts in juices and surfaces during different stages of a complete production line. Subsequently, molecular typing of Z. rouxii isolates was done to determine the strain distribution of this spoilage yeast. Osmotolerant yeast species, other than Z. rouxii, were mainly recovered from processing plant environments. Z. rouxii was only isolated from surface samples with grape juice remains. Z. rouxii was largely isolated from grape juice samples with some degree of concentration. Storage of grape juice pre-concentrate and concentrate allowed an increase in the Z. rouxii population. A widely distributed dominant molecular Z. rouxii pattern was found in samples from all three processing plants, suggesting resident microbes inside the plant.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Evisceration is currently becoming the technique of choice in the treatment of certain eye diseases, including, among others, painful blind eye and endophthalmitis. The most widely used implants are currently the hydroxyapatite and porous polyethylene for the rehabilitation of the anophthalmic socket. OBJECTIVE To describe the indications, type of implant material used, and complications in evisceration surgery. METHODS A retrospective, observational, descriptive study based on clinical records of patients that underwent evisceration between 2008 and 2015 in the Instituto Fundación Conde de Valenciana, Mexico. RESULTS A total of 186 evisceration surgeries were performed, of which 52.7% of the patients were men. The mean age was 54 years. The right eye was eviscerated in 53% of cases, and 79.2% had a vision of no light perception. Most patients had preoperative pain. The most common diagnosis for which evisceration was performed was endophthalmitis. Phthisis bulbi was reported in 20 eyes. A primary implant was inserted in 86.81% of the cases, with 34.81% of the implants being made of porous polyethylene. Four cases showed extrusion of the implant, with 2 cases of porous polyethylene. The ocular prosthesis was tolerated in 91% of cases. There were no cases of sympathetic ophthalmia. CONCLUSION Evisceration is shown to be a good alternative to enucleation in cases where the sclera can be preserved, showing a low incidence of sympathetic ophthalmia.

Abstract
The effects of ethylene exposure temperature, ethylene concentration and post-exposure storage temperature on the ripening processes of bananas were studied. Mature-green bananas were treated for 24h with different ethylene concentrations (5, 50, 500 and 5,000 L/L) at three temperatures (12, 15 and 20°C) and subsequently stored at either 15 or 20°C. No major differences were found among the four ethylene concentrations used, except in the case of the 12°C exposure temperature where the 5 L/L treatment showed little or no effect on ripening. In general, exposure to ethylene at 12°C in all cases resulted in uneven ripening of the fruits. Exposure to ethylene at 15°C (storage temperature 20°C) extended shelf life one or three days (storage temperature 15°C) more than ethylene exposure at 20°C. These differences were accompanied by changes in the respiration pattern of the bananas, their quality parameters (TSS, peel and pulp firmness) and their soluble sugars and organic acids composition. Shelf life of ethylene-treated bananas could reliably be modulated within the range of 6 to 12 days, without any decrease in fruit quality, just by adjusting exposure to ethylene and storage temperature.
