Abstract
11115 Background: Tumor-stroma interaction plays a significant role for malignant growth. Results from prostate and breast cancer rodent models show cancerogenic properties of tumor-associated and genetically altered stromal cells (SC) when combined with initiated or normal epithelium (Olumi et al., Cancer Res 1999, Kuperwasser et al., PNAS 2004). However, data on the mechanisms and sequels of tumor-stroma interaction in lung cancer are scanty. Methods: Here, we analyzed the functional and molecular sequels of cross-talk between the non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell lines A549, H23, and H1703 and primary stromal cells (SC) derived from matched normal lung tissue and tumors of newly diagnosed NSCLC patients. Tumor cells were kept in a non-contact co-culture system with SC and analyzed for alterations in proliferation, colony formation, migration, adhesion, invasion, chemosensitivity and gene expression by Affymetrix HG U133 Plus 2.0 arrays. Results: Exposure to SC altered cellular functions and gene expression profiles related to tumor growth, metastasis and response to therapy. Each cell line showed individual alterations that were hierarchically governed by the (1) type of tumor cell, (2) the SC donor and his histology (3) and the local origin of the SC (normal lung tissue vs. tumor-associated). Conclusions: This in vitro model demonstrates an individual pattern of tumor-stroma interaction in NSCLC that is determined by both, the properties of the tumor cells and those of the stromal environment. Thus, biomarker programs in NSCLC should also consider the stromal compartment. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Abstract
There is little literature about the mortality associated with bronchiectasis. The aim of the present study was to investigate factors affecting mortality in patients with bronchiectasis. In total, 91 patients were examined for aetiology, pulmonary function tests, high-resolution computed tomography, sputum microbiology and quality of life scores and were then followed over 13 yrs. Overall, 29.7% of the patients died. On multivariate analysis, age, St George's Respiratory Questionnaire activity score, Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection, total lung capacity (TLC), residual volume/TLC and the transfer factor coefficient were all independently associated with mortality. In patients with moderate to severe bronchiectasis, mortality is associated with a degree of restrictive and obstructive disease, poor gas transfer and chronic pseudomonas infection. These features should guide future research into disease progression, and identify those patients needing intensive treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Thymomas and thymic carcinomas are rare tumors of the anterior mediastinum. A WHO classification was introduced in 1999, which has been updated in 2004. Meanwhile, several retrospective studies have been carried out which have shown the prognostic significance of this classification together with Masaoka's staging system and the extent of surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS Between 1983 and 2000, 77 patients (37 male, 40 female) underwent resection of thymomas and thymic carcinomas in our institution. Complete resection was achieved in 57 patients. The median follow-up was 72.6 months. RESULTS The overall 5-year survival rate was 71.4 %. The factors "histology" and "extent of resection" had the most important impact on survival. However, even among the patients with complete resection, 12 of them suffered a relapse. Among this patient group, the most important factors for disease-free survival were "tumor stage" and "histology". Patients with an incomplete resection had a 5-year survival rate of only 29 % in spite of adjuvant radiation and/or chemotherapy. Due to the high rate of relapse, the poor survival rate found in incompletely resected patients as well as the failure of classical chemotherapy regimens, especially in type B2 and type B3 thymomas and thymic carcinomas, the search for new chemotherapeutic schemes is mandatory. CONCLUSION Our study shows that there are still encouraging therapeutic options for thymomas and thymic carinomas. Type B2, type B3 thymomas and thymic carcinomas have worse outcomes in spite of adjuvant chemo- and radiotherapies. Especially in patients with incomplete surgical resection the outcome remains poor.

Abstract
We investigate the collapse dynamics of a dipolar condensate of 52Cr atoms when the s-wave scattering length characterizing the contact interaction is reduced below a critical value. A complex dynamics, involving an anisotropic, d-wave symmetric explosion of the condensate, is observed. The atom number decreases abruptly during the collapse. We find good agreement between our experimental results and those of a numerical simulation of the three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation, including contact and dipolar interactions as well as three-body losses. The simulation indicates that the collapse induces the formation of two vortex rings with opposite circulations.

Abstract
Lung cancer including non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) represents a leading cause of cancer death in Western countries. Yet, understanding its pathobiology to improve early diagnosis and therapeutic strategies is still a major challenge of today's biomedical research. We analyzed a set of differentially regulated genes that were identified in skin cancer by a comprehensive microarray study, for their expression in NSCLC. We found that ferm domain containing protein 3 (FRMD3), a member of the protein 4.1 superfamily, is expressed in normal lung tissue but silenced in 54 out of 58 independent primary NSCLC tumours compared to patient-matched normal lung tissue. FRMD3 overexpression in different epithelial cell lines resulted in a decreased clonogenicity as measured by colony formation assay. Although cell attachment capabilities and cell proliferation rate remained unchanged, this phenotype was most likely owing to induced apoptosis. Our data identify FRMD3 as a novel putative tumour suppressor gene suggesting an important role in the origin and progression of lung cancer.

Abstract
Breakup reactions were used to study the ground-state configuration of the neutron-rich isotope 23O. The 22O fragments produced in one-nucleon removal from 23O at 938 MeV/nucleon in a carbon target were detected in coincidence with deexciting gamma rays. The widths of the longitudinal momentum distributions of the 22O fragments and the one-neutron removal cross sections were interpreted in the framework of a simple theoretical model which favors the assignment of Ipi = 1/2+ to the 23O ground state.

Abstract
The one-proton knockout channel from 6He (240 MeV/u) impinging on a carbon target has been investigated. The triton fragments originating from this channel were detected in coincidence with the two neutrons. A broad structure, peaked at 3 MeV above the t+2n threshold, is observed in the t+n+n-relative energy spectrum. It is shown that this structure is mainly due to a I(pi)=1/2(+) resonance as expected for the 5H ground state, and from the observed angular and energy correlations, being used for the first time in 5H studies, that the neutrons to a large extent occupy the p shell.

Abstract
Using beta decays of a clean source of 12N produced at the IGISOL facility, we have measured the breakup of the 12C (12.71 MeV) state into three alpha particles with a segmented particle detector setup. The high quality of the data permits solving the question of the breakup mechanism of the 12.71 MeV state, a longstanding problem in few-body nuclear physics. Among existing models, a modified sequential model fits the data best, but systematic deviations indicate that a three-body description is needed.

Abstract
The properties of discrete breathers in dissipative one-dimensional lattices of nonlinear oscillators subject to periodic driving forces are reviewed. We focus on oscillobreathers in the Frenkel-Kontorova chain and rotobreathers in a ladder of Josephson junctions. Both types of exponentially localized solutions are easily obtained numerically using adiabatic continuation from the anticontinuous limit. Linear stability (Floquet) analysis allows the characterization of different types of bifurcations experienced by periodic discrete breathers. Some of these bifurcations produce nonperiodic localized solutions, namely, quasiperiodic and chaotic discrete breathers, which are generally impossible as exact solutions in Hamiltonian systems. Within a certain range of parameters, propagating breathers occur as attractors of the dissipative dynamics. General features of these excitations are discussed and the Peierls-Nabarro barrier is addressed. Numerical scattering experiments with mobile breathers reveal the existence of two-breather bound states and allow a first glimpse at the intricate phenomenology of these special multibreather configurations.

Abstract
Low-lying resonance states in 7He(6He+n), formed after fragmentation reactions of a 227 MeV/nucleon 8He beam on a carbon target, have been studied. Coincidences between 6He nuclei and neutrons, corresponding to the one-neutron knockout channel in 8He, were selected. The relative energy spectrum in the 6He+n system shows a structure, which is interpreted as the 7He ( Ipi = 3/2(-)) ground state, unbound with 0.43(2) MeV relative to the 6He+n system and a width of Gamma = 0.15(8) MeV overlapping with an excited ( Ipi = 1/2(-)) state observed at 1.0(1) MeV with a width of Gamma = 0.75(8) MeV.

Abstract
In the early visual system, neuronal responses can be extremely precise. Under a wide range of stimuli, cells in the retina and thalamus fire spikes very reproducibly, often with millisecond precision on subsequent stimulus repeats. Here we develop a mathematical description of the firing process that, given the recent visual input, accurately predicts the timing of individual spikes. The formalism is successful in matching the spike trains from retinal ganglion cells in salamander, rabbit, and cat, as well as from lateral geniculate nucleus neurons in cat. It adapts to many different response types, from very precise to highly variable. The accuracy of the model allows a compact description of how these neurons encode the visual stimulus.
