Abstract
BACKGROUND The efficiency of a commercial immunochromatography kit (IP-NoV) was evaluated for rapid detection of norovirus in Japanese fecal specimens and its sensitivity and specificity were compared with two other commercial kits. METHODS A total of 70 samples collected from children who suffered from acute gastroenteritis in 2009 - 2010 were tested for norovirus by three different immunochromatography kits. RT-PCR was employed as the gold standard method. RESULTS The sensitivity of IP-NoV, QuickEx-Norovirus, and QuickNavi-Norovirus kits were 85.2%, 63.9%, and 55.7%, respectively. The IP-NoV kit could detect various genotypes of norovirus with higher efficiency as compared to QuickEx-Norovirus and QuickNavi-Norovirus kits. In addition, the phylogenetic analysis revealed that the majority of noroviruses circulating in Japan during 2009 - 2010 belonged to GII/4 variant 2006b and 2008a, which were responsible for the outbreaks worldwide. CONCLUSIONS The findings indicated that the IC kits could be used as an alternative method for direct detection of norovirus in clinical specimens covering a wide range of norovirus genotypes circulating in Japan.

Abstract
We describe an 8-year-old girl with the mildest form of acute necrotizing encephalopathy, associated with pandemic influenza A. She manifested a convulsion engendering deterioration of consciousness, although cranial computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging within 4 hours after the convulsion revealed no abnormalities. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging 20 hours after the convulsion revealed lesions of the thalamus bilaterally, brainstem tegmentum, internal capsule, and white matter. She was diagnosed with acute necrotizing encephalopathy. Typically, the prognosis of acute necrotizing encephalopathy with a brainstem lesion is poor. Nevertheless, she recovered almost completely, after early intervention with pulsed methylprednisolone and high-dose γ-globulin therapy. She manifested a thermolabile phenotype of carnitine palmitoyltransferase II variants such as cystine-isoleucine-methionine phenotype type 9 (FVM-CIM; Phe352Cys-Val388Ile-Met647Met alleles), resulting in a predisposition to encephalopathy during influenza infection. This case is the first, to the best of our knowledge, of pandemic influenza A-associated acute necrotizing encephalopathy with a good outcome despite severe magnetic resonance imaging findings.

Abstract
Congenital infection-like syndrome includes multiple disorders. Although novel syndromes have recently been described and their genetic defects identified, many cases remain unclassified. Here we report a patient with neuroradiologic findings of intracranial calcification and cerebellar hypoplasia, and clinical features of growth retardation, progressive pancytopenia, interstitial pneumonia, and immune abnormality. Our patient had a phenotypic overlap with Aicardi-Goutières syndrome and Hoyeraal-Hreidarsson syndrome, despite the absence of mutation in their responsible genes.

Abstract
A patient with a large deletion of the distal part of the long arm of chromosome 13 showed severe psychomotor retardation, a characteristic face, nystagmus, retinopathy, cystic kidney disease, and brain malformation with molar tooth sign and cerebellar vermis hypoplasia, a phenotype typical of Arima syndrome. This patient also had bilateral retinoblastoma. Fluorescent in situ hybridization and single-nucleotide-polymorphism genotyping microarray demonstrated an interstitial deletion of 54 Mbp, ranging from 13q14.13 to 13q32.3 and involving the RB1 gene. This patient is the first case of Arima syndrome, or a Joubert syndrome-related disorder, that showed linkage to chromosome 13q.

Marked advances have recently been made with regard to their classification, pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment. Clinical and pathologic features of acute encephalitis are determined by pathogens (mostly viruses), humoral immunity and cellular immunity, and those of acute encephalopathy by cytokine storm, metabolic disorder (mitochondrial, in particular)and excitotoxicity.

Abstract
Acute necrotizing encephalopathy is a syndrome of acute encephalopathy characterized by bilateral thalamic lesions and prevalent among children in East Asia. The antecedent infection is usually a viral disease with high fever, such as influenza and exanthem subitum. There are neurologic symptoms, such as coma, convulsion and brainstem dysfunction, and findings of systemic organ involvement. Despite the efficacy of corticosteroids in some cases, the prognosis is often poor with a high mortality and severe neurologic sequelae. Recent studies have elucidated the genetic background, providing a clue to the pathogenesis.

Abstract
Norovirus (NoV) is a causative agent of gastroenteritis in children and adults worldwide. Although reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) has been accepted as the standard method for diagnosis of NoV infection, it requires well-trained personnel and sophisticated equipments. Performance of a commercial immunochromatography (IC) test for rapid detection of NoV was evaluated with fecal specimens collected from children admitted to a hospital with acute gastroenteritis during 2005-2007 in Chiang Mai, Thailand. A total of 463 fecal specimens were tested for the presence of NoV by a commercial immunochromatography kit (IP-NoV) and by RT-PCR. Sensitivity, specificity, and agreement of immunochromatography as compared to RT-PCR were 74.2%, 99.5%, and 96.1%, respectively. Based on the NoV genotypes determined by phylogenetic analysis, immunochromatography detected NoV GII/3, GII/4, GII/6, GII/13, GII/15, and GII/16 genotypes. The findings indicate that the immunochromatography kit could be used for a direct detection of NoV GII in clinical specimens and covering a wide range of NoV genotypes circulating in Thailand.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recombination of RNA viruses plays an important part in molecular epidemiological study, virus evolution, vaccine design, and viral control programs. Sapovirus, a member of the family Caliciviridae, is one of the major causative agents of viral gastroenteritis affecting all age groups. METHODS Sapovirus capsid and polymerase regions were amplified by PCR using specific primers. PCR products were sequenced directly and sequence analysis was performed using CLUSTAL X, SimPlot, and MEGA 4 software package. RESULTS Based on the genetic analysis, a novel, naturally occurring recombinant sapovirus strain was identified in Bangladesh. Breakpoint analysis of the recombinant sapovirus showed that the recombination site was at the open reading frame ORF1/ORF2 overlap. CONCLUSIONS We described the genetic characterization of a novel, naturally occurring recombinant sapovirus and provided the first evidence of recombination in sapovirus in Bangladesh.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Noroviruses are a major cause of epidemic gastroenteritis in children and adults. The aim of the present study was to investigate the molecular epidemiology of norovirus gastroenteritis in Japan. METHODS A total of 954 fecal specimens collected from infants and children with acute gastroenteritis from five different regions (Tokyo, Sapporo, Saga, Osaka, and Maizuru) of Japan during 2007-2009 were identified by multiple RT-PCR and semi-nested PCR. RESULTS Norovirus was detected in a relatively high detection rate (26.6%; 254 of 954). Of the identified NoV, 9.5% (91 of 954) were positive by semi-nested PCR. Norovirus GII (97.3%) was more prevalent than GI (2.7%). Norovirus infections were very common in the patients aged 12-23 months (44.5%; 113 of 254). Winter month seasonality supported norovirus infection in Japan. All 7 GI sequences (100%) detected only in 2007-2008 clustered with Chiba 407 known as GI.4 genotype. Most of the norovirus GII sequences in 2007-2008 belonged to GII.4 (77.9%), followed by GII.14 (11.9%), and GII.3 and GII.6 (5.1% each). In 2008-2009, norovirus sequences were classified into eight distinct genotypes (GII.1, GII.2, GII.3, GII.4, GII.6, GII.7, GII12, and GII.14). GII.4/2006b variant was responsible for 100% among the detected GII.4 strains in both seasons. Interestingly, GII.6/GII.14 recombinant strains emerged, for the first time in Japanese children, as the second prevalent genotype (11.9%) in 2007-2008 and then dropped rapidly to 2.3% in a year after. In addition, GII.b/GII.3 and GII.4/GII.3 recombinant strains that had been described previously were also found in this study. CONCLUSIONS This is the first report to demonstrate the co-circulation of the predominant GII.4/2006b variant and the emerging GII.6/GII.14 recombinant strains and supports the importance of norovirus as a causative agent of diarrhea in Japanese children with acute gastroenteritis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rubella virus (RV) infection during the first trimester of pregnancy often leads to severe birth defects known as congenital rubella syndrome (CRS). METHODS A premature newborn male was clinically diagnosed as CRS with cataracts, congenital heart defects, microcephaly, hepatosplenomegaly, and thrombocytopenia. The infection was confirmed serologically and molecularly. RESULTS The RV was characterized and clustered with the 2B genotype. CONCLUSIONS The integrated description of clinical features, serological and molecular data provide a baseline for diagnosis and control of rubella and CRS in Vietnam. This is the first report of molecular investigation of wildtype RV strain in Vietnam, thus contributing to the documentation of RV's worldwide distribution.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Noroviruses (NoV) are important causes of acute gastroenteritis in infants and young children. This study investigated the prevalence of NoV infections in infants and children with acute gastroenteritis in Japan from July 2006 to June 2007. METHODS A total of 628 fecal specimens were collected from infants and children with acute gastroenteritis in five different places (Maizuru, Tokyo, Sapporo, Saga and Osaka), Japan during the period of July 2006 to June 2007. All fecal specimens were examined for NoV by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Molecular analysis of NoV was carried out by sequencing methods. RESULTS From 628 fecal specimens tested, 15.6% (99 of 628) were positive for NoV. Of these, NoV GII most predominant, with a prevalence of 15.5% (97 of 99). Analysis of nucleotide and amino acid sequences revealed that NoVGII strains comprised GII/4 (89%), GII/3 (6.4%), GII/7 (2.3%), and GII/2 (2.3%) genotypes. Among NoVGII/4 strains, all of them belonged to genotype GII/4 2006b variants. Our results clearly indicated that NoV infections were most commonly observed in winter seasons in Japan. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, this study shows the predominance of NoVGII/4 2006b variants and NoV is still burden of disease among Japanese pediatric population.

Abstract
In Japan, a revised act on organ transplantation is enforced from July 2010. This act enables an infant or a child with brain death to become a donor for organ transplantation under the consent of his or her family members. New diagnostic criteria have been set for children under six years of age. Diagnosis of brain death in infancy and childhood requires special caution, since an infant's brain has special features. The causes of brain death also vary according to the age. The new criteria exclude from candidates of donor neonates and infants under 12 weeks of corrected age, as well as cases in which the possibility of child abuse cannot be completely denied. The time interval between two diagnostic procedures must be 24 hours or more.

Abstract
A novel reverse transcription-multiplex polymerase chain reaction assay was developed to detect Aichi virus, human parechovirus, enteroviruses, and human bocavirus. A mixture of four pairs of published specific primers, 6261 and 6779, ev22(+) and ev22(-), F1 and R1, 188F and 542R, was used to amplify the viral genomes and specifically generate four different amplicon sizes of 519, 270, 440, and 354 bp for Aichi virus, human parechovirus, enteroviruses, and human bocavirus, respectively. A total of 247 fecal specimens previously screened for rotavirus, adenovirus, norovirus, sapovirus, and astrovirus-negative, collected from infants and children with acute gastroenteritis in Japan from July 2007 to June 2008, were tested further for the presence of the four viruses, Aichi virus, human parechovirus, enteroviruses, and human bocavirus, by RT-multiplex PCR. The total detection rate of these viruses was 26.7% (66 out of 247 samples). Of these, HPeV, EVs, and HBoV were identified in 20, 41, and 5 specimens. No Aichi virus was found among these subjects. The sensitivity and specificity of RT-multiplex PCR were assessed and demonstrated a strong validation against RT-monoplex PCR. This is the first report of detecting these types of viruses in fecal samples from infants and children with acute gastroenteritis by RT-multiplex PCR.

BACKGROUND Germline mutations in several members of RAS/RAF/MEK/ERK pathway cause clinically similar genetic disorders, including Noonan syndrome (NS), Costello syndrome (CS) and cardio-facio-cutaneous syndrome (CFC). Each of these syndromes has a wide spectrum of molecular etiology. The aim of the present study was to conduct a comprehensive genetic analysis of RAS/RAF/MEK/ERK pathway in these syndromes. METHODS Three patients with NS and two patients with CS/CFC were examined. Peripheral blood samples were collected from all patients as well as from 100 healthy Japanese volunteers. The protein phosphatase, non-receptor type II (PTPN11), KRAS, HRAS, NRAS, BRAF, RAF1, Son of Sevenless (SOS1) and MEK1genes were analyzed. RESULTS In a patient with a severe Noonan phenotype, a rare PTPN11 mutation was detected: A to G transition at position 172, causing an N58D substitution within the N-SH2 domain. In a CS/CFC patient no HRAS mutations were found, but a novel SOS1 missense mutation was found: A to G transition at position 473, causing a T158A substitution within domain of histone-like fold (HF). CONCLUSIONS A case mimicking CS with SOS1 T158A substitution, which has not been reported previously in CS, revealed the complex relationship between the genotype and phenotype of overlapping syndromes of the RAS/RAF/MEK/ERK pathway.

Abstract
Breast milk contains immunological factors, such as IgA antibody, which help to prevent infectious diseases. A total of 197 paired samples of colostrum and breast milk was collected from postpartum mothers in Gunma City, Japan, and examined for anti-rubella IgA antibody by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and Western blotting (WB). The anti-rubella virus IgA ranged from 0.5 to 78.5 U/ml with a mean of 6.05 U/ml and a median of 3.6 U/ml in colostrum, and from 0.5 to 32.7 U/ml with a mean of 2.74 U/ml and a median of 2 U/ml in milk. The differences between the means of titers of total IgA and anti-rubella virus IgA in colostrum and in milk were significant statistically. The levels of anti-rubella virus IgA in both colostrum and breast milk correlated positively with the anti-rubella virus hemagglutination inhibition (HI) titers in the sera of mother, indicating that the levels of these different classes of antibodies correlated. Based on WB, anti-rubella virus IgA in both colostrum and breast milk reacted with the rubella viral protein E1 and C, but not with the E2 protein.

Abstract
Sequence and phylogenetic analyses of the rotavirus VP7 gene were performed on 52 human G2 and G4 strains isolated in Japan, China, Thailand, and Vietnam during 2001-2003. All genotype G2 strains included in the study clustered into lineage II of the phylogenetic tree, together with the majority of global G2 strains detected since 1995. The amino acid substitution at position 96 from aspartic acid to asparagine was noted among the emerging or re-emerging G2 rotavirus strains in Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam during 2002-2003. Genotype G4 strains detected in Vietnam grouped into lineage Ia of the phylogenetic tree, whereas Japanese G4 strains clustered in lineage Ic which included emerging G4 strains from Argentina, Italy, Paraguay, and Uruguay. It is noteworthy that an insertion of asparagine was found at position 76 in all the Japanese strains and that its presence might be involved in the emergence of G4 rotavirus in Japan during 2002-2003.

Abstract
In Japan, from July 2010, an infant or a child with brain death will be legally regarded as a candidate of donor for organ transplantation under the consent of his or her family members. Official diagnostic criteria of brain death in children are currently under compilation. The causes and incidence of brain death remarkably differ among individuals belonging to different age groups. Secondary brain damages resulting from asphyxia, drowning, hypoxemia, and cardiopulmonary arrest more commonly occur in childhood than in adulthood. Child abuse or neglect is suspected to be involved in many of the cases of brain death. The current Japanese diagnostic criteria hitherto used for adults require several modifications before these can be applied to infants and children. According to the requirements of the new act, abused or neglected infants and children must be excluded from the category of donor candidates. Neonates and young infants below 12 weeks of corrected age will also be excluded, because neurological diagnosis of brain death is difficult in these individuals.

Abstract
VP6 protein antigens allow classification of rotaviruses into at least four subgroups, depending on the presence or absence of SG-specific epitopes: SG I, SG II, SG (I+II), and SG non-(I+II). However, MAbs against epitopes on the VP6 protein of human and porcine rotaviruses, sometimes, do not recognize SG-specific epitopes or recognize irrelevant-SG epitopes and therefore result in the incorrect assignment of subgroups. In order to solve this problem, a novel multiplex RT-PCR was developed as an alternative tool to identify VP6 genogroups using newly designed primers which are specific for genogroup I or II. The sensitivity and specificity of the newly developed multiplex RT-PCR method was evaluated by testing with human and porcine rotaviruses of known SG I, SG II, SG (I+II), and SG non-(I+II) strains in comparison with monoplex RT-PCR and VP6 sequence analysis. The results show that the genogroups of both human and porcine rotaviruses as determined by the new multiplex RT-PCR method were in 100% agreement with those determined by monoplex RT-PCR and VP6 sequence analysis. The method was shown to be specific, sensitive, less-time consuming, and successful in genogrouping clinical isolates of rotaviruses circulating in children and piglets with acute diarrhea.

A novel HPeV, designated as HPeV10, was identified in 2 samples by sequence analysis of the viral protein 1 gene of the detected HPeVs.

Abstract
A molecular epidemiological study was conducted on 104 HIV-1 strains isolated from HIV-infected children hospitalized in Children Hospital 1 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam during 2004-2005. Genetic subtyping based on env C2/V3 sequences revealed that CRF01-AE was the sole circulating recombinant form found in this study. Sequence analysis of the V3 loop showed that GPGQ tetramer was the most common V3 loop core motif identified in the HIV-1 strains studied (89.5%). The findings raise great concern about HIV-infected children in Vietnam and provide up-to-date molecular epidemiological information of HIV-1 circulating in Vietnam during the study period.

Abstract
Holoprosencephaly (HPE) is the most common congenital malformation of the developing human forebrain, in which the two cerebral hemispheres fail to separate to various degrees. Although pathological mutations have been identified in up to nine genes, a number of other genes as well as environmental factors are likely to be involved in HPE. Here, we describe a case with the middle interhemispheric variant, a milder variant of HPE, carrying a deletion of approximately 10.4 Mb at 6q22.31-q23.2, which includes the EYA4 gene. EYA4 is one of four vertebrate orthologs of the Drosophila melanogaster gene, eyes absent. EYA4 was co-immunoprecipitated with SIX3, the product of one of the known HPE genes. Moreover, the EYA4 protein was observed to be recruited to the nucleus by the nuclear protein SIX3 under a confocal microscope. EYA4 is a transcriptional coactivator, and was shown to cooperate with transcription factor SIX3 by reporter gene assays. These results demonstrate physical and functional association between EYA4 and SIX3, suggesting that EYA4 is a novel candidate gene of HPE, whose haploinsufficiency leads to HPE through the compromised function of SIX3.

Abstract
PROBLEM Epidemiological data suggested that pandemic influenza increased the risks of spontaneous abortion and premature labor, while seasonal influenza also increased the risk of schizophrenia in adolescence. However, their pathogenesis is so far unknown. METHOD OF STUDY The first trimester trophoblast cell lines, namely, Swan71 and HTR8 cells were challenged with A/Udorn/72 influenza virus (H3N2). At indicated time points, cells were examined for expression of influenza proteins. Viral replication in culture media, apoptosis and the expression of human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-G were also examined. RESULTS Intracellular localization of viral proteins was observed. Twenty-four hours after inoculation, virus was detected in culture media while most cells fell into apoptosis. During apoptosis, expression of HLA-G was unchanged. CONCLUSION We revealed replication of low pathogenic influenza virus in the first trimester trophoblast cell lines. Placental damages are likely to be induced by direct cytopathic effects of influenza virus and subsequent apoptosis rather than down regulation of HLA-G expression and subsequent rejection by maternal immune system.

Abstract
In acute encephalopathy with febrile convulsive status epilepticus (AEFCSE), subcortical white matter lesions on diffusion-weighted images are sometimes encountered on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), such as in acute encephalopathy with biphasic seizures and late reduced diffusion (AESD). We report here a severe case of AEFCSE following respiratory syncytial virus infection, with emphasis on the cranial MRI findings. MRI in this patient showed widespread T2-hyperintensity along the cerebral cortical gray matter from day 3 to day 22. Lesions with reduced diffusion were noted on day 3 in the deep zone of gray matter of the left occipito-temporo-parietal cortex, but on day 7 they shifted to the subcortical white matter of both the cerebral hemispheres. These MRI findings provide radiologic evidence for damage to the cortical gray matter in AEFCSE. The serial change of diffusion-weighted images suggests that the cortical gray matter may be injured prior to the involvement of the subcortical white matter.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To clarify the features of delirious behavior in patients with acute necrotizing encephalopathy. METHODS We retrospectively evaluated the clinical course of 38 children with acute necrotizing encephalopathy diagnosed on the basis of neuroradiological findings. The patients were divided into two groups according to the presence or absence of delirious behavior. We compared clinical features, laboratory data, neuroimaging findings, and outcome between those with and without delirious behavior. In patients with delirious behavior, chronological sequence of neurological symptoms and the characteristics of delirious behavior were investigated. RESULTS Delirious behavior was observed in 8 patients. Patient characteristics or most laboratory data on admission were not significantly different between those with and without delirious behavior. Brainstem lesions were more frequent in patients with delirious behavior than in those without. In contrast, lesions in lentiform nuclei, cerebral hemisphere, or cerebellum were relatively more frequent in patients without delirious behavior. It was the initial neurological symptom in 7 of 8 patients. Stupor and seizures were observed after delirious behavior in most patients. CONCLUSIONS Delirious behavior was not uncommon in children with acute necrotizing encephalopathy. Brainstem lesions may be related to the development of delirious behavior of children with acute necrotizing encephalopathy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study whether dysregulation of insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) and IGF signaling are common molecular changes in symptomatic leiomyomas (fibroids) and whether IGFs are associated with large fibroids. DESIGN Examination of IGFs and IGF pathway genes in a large cohort of fibroids at transcriptional and translational levels. Mechanisms leading to alterations of IGFs and related genes were also analyzed. SETTING University clinical research laboratory. PATIENT(S) Hysterectomies for symptomatic fibroids were collected: 180 cases from paraffin-embedded tissues and 50 cases from fresh-frozen tissues. INTERVENTION(S) Tissue microarray and immunohistochemistry, DNA methylation analysis, reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction, and Western blot. MAIN OUTCOME MEASUREMENT(S) Transcription and translation analyses of IGF-1/2, p-AKT, p-S6K, and TSC1/2 in fibroids and matched myometrium. RESULT(S) Insulin-like growth factors and downstream effectors were dysregulated in approximately one third of fibroids. All except for IGF-2 seemed to be abnormally regulated at translation levels. Up-regulation of IGF-2 messenger RNAs was contributed by all four alternating slicing promoters. There was a positive correlation of IGF-1 and p-AKT over-expression with fibroid size. Insulin-like growth factor 1 but not IGF-2 levels directly correlated with activation of p-AKT and p-S6K. CONCLUSION(S) Altered expressions of IGFs and their related downstream proteins were found in one third of fibroids. Large fibroids show high levels of IGF-1 and p-AKT activity compared with small ones.

Abstract
Monkeypox virus (MPXV) causes a smallpox-like disease in non-human primates and humans. This infection is endemic to central and western Africa. MPXV is divided into two genetically different groups, Congo Basin and West African MPXV, with the former being the more virulent. A real-time quantitative MPXV genome amplification system was developed for the diagnosis of MPXV infections using loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) technology. Primers used for genome amplification of Congo Basin (C-LAMP), West African (W-LAMP), and both Congo Basin and West African (COM-LAMP) MPXV by LAMP were designed according to the nucleotide sequences of the Congo Basin-specific D14L gene, the West African-specific partial ATI gene, and the partial ATI gene that is shared by both groups, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of the LAMP were evaluated with nested PCR using peripheral blood and throat swab specimens collected from Congo Basin MPXV or West African MPXV-infected monkeys. The sensitivity and specificity of COM-LAMP, C-LAMP, and W-LAMP were 80% (45/56) and 100% (64/64); 79% (19/24) and 100% (24/24); and 72% (23/32) and 100% (40/40), respectively. The viremia level determined by LAMP assays increased with increases in the severity of the monkeypox-associated symptoms. The newly developed LAMP assay was confirmed to be a rapid, quantifiable, and highly sensitive and specific system effective in the diagnosis of MPXV infections. The LAMP assays made it possible to discriminate between Congo Basin and West African MPXV. The LAMP developed in this study is useful not only for diagnosis of but also for the assessment of MPXV infections.

Abstract
To determine G and P genotypes, we performed nested PCR on 307 rotavirus specimens collected in Dhaka, Bangladesh, during 2004–2005. G2 (43.3%) was detected at the highest frequency, followed by G4 (19.5%), G9 (13.7%), G1 (12.7%), and G3 (2.6%). P[8] was the most predominant genotype (53.2%), followed by P[4] (42.9%).

Abstract
In the field of spintronics, researchers have manipulated magnetization using spin-polarized currents. Another option is to use a voltage-induced symmetry change in a ferromagnetic material to cause changes in magnetization or in magnetic anisotropy. However, a significant improvement in efficiency is needed before this approach can be used in memory devices with ultralow power consumption. Here, we show that a relatively small electric field (less than 100 mV nm(-1)) can cause a large change (approximately 40%) in the magnetic anisotropy of a bcc Fe(001)/MgO(001) junction. The effect is tentatively attributed to the change in the relative occupation of 3d orbitals of Fe atoms adjacent to the MgO barrier. Simulations confirm that voltage-controlled magnetization switching in magnetic tunnel junctions is possible using the anisotropy change demonstrated here, which could be of use in the development of low-power logic devices and non-volatile memory cells.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to clarify the difference between influenza and non-influenza cases in clinical symptoms, laboratory and neuroimaging findings, and outcome in children with ANE. We retrospectively studied 22 children with ANE. Eleven of them had virological proof of influenza infection and the other 11 were judged as non-influenza infection. There was no significant difference between influenza and non-influenza cases in sex, antipyretics use and neurological symptoms. Although laboratory data were not different between the two groups, brainstem lesions were relatively more frequent in influenza cases than in non-influenza cases. Outcome was not different between the two groups. The results of our study suggest that the pathogenesis of acute necrotizing encephalopathy will not be dependent on infectious agents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Norovirus (NoV) infection is thought to be confined to the intestines, whereas many reports suggest antigenemia and viremia occur during rotavirus gastroenteritis. OBJECTIVES To detect NoV RNA in sera and cerebrospinal fluids (CSF) from NoV-infected children, and to quantify and genetically characterize the NoV found in these compartments. STUDY DESIGN Semi-nested PCR was conducted on stool, serum and CSF samples from 56 patients with acute gastroenteritis. Positive samples for NoV were analyzed further by sequencing and real-time PCR. RESULTS From 39 patients with NoV RNA in stools, 6 also had NoV RNA in sera and none had NoV RNA in CSF. Genotypes of the NoV in stool and serum from the same patient matched completely. The strains in this study had high homology (98.1-100%) with registered strains in the database. The median viral load in stools of the serum-positive patients was greater than that of the serum-negative patients, but this difference was not statistically significant (9.8 x 10(9)copies/g versus 1.1 x 10(9)copies/g (p=0.117)). CONCLUSIONS NoV RNA appeared in the blood stream in 15% of the patients of NoV gastroenteritis. Although the viral load in stool was not statistically correlated with NoV appearance in serum, genetic analysis indicated that NoV RNA in sera originated from the NoV gastroenteritis.
