Exclusive J/ψ photoproduction off protons in ultraperipheral p-Pb collisions at √(s(NN))=5.02 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2014; 113:232504. Abstract
We present the first measurement at the LHC of exclusive J/ψ photoproduction off protons, in ultraperipheral proton-lead collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. Events are selected with a dimuon pair produced either in the rapidity interval, in the laboratory frame, 2.5<y<4 (p-Pb) or -3.6<y<-2.6 (Pb-p), and no other particles observed in the ALICE acceptance. The measured cross sections σ(γ+p→J/ψ+p) are 33.2±2.2(stat)±3.2(syst)±0.7(theor) nb in p-Pb and 284±36(stat)_{-32}^{+27}(syst)±26(theor) nb in Pb-p collisions. We measure this process up to about 700 GeV in the γp center of mass, which is a factor of two larger than the highest energy studied at HERA. The data are consistent with a power law dependence of the J/ψ photoproduction cross section in γp energies from about 20 to 700 GeV, or equivalently, from Bjorken x scaling variable between ∼2×10^{-2} and ∼2×10^{-5}, thus indicating no significant change in the gluon density behavior of the proton between HERA and LHC energies.

Abstract
The p_{T}-differential production cross sections of the prompt charmed mesons D^{0}, D^{+}, D^{*+}, and D_{s}^{+} and their charge conjugate in the rapidity interval -0.96<y_{cms}<0.04 were measured in p-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The nuclear modification factor R_{pPb}, quantifying the D-meson yield in p-Pb collisions relative to the yield in pp collisions scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions, is compatible within the 15%-20% uncertainties with unity in the transverse momentum interval 1<p_{T}<24 GeV/c. No significant difference among the R_{pPb} of the four D-meson species is observed. The results are described within uncertainties by theoretical calculations that include initial-state effects. The measurement adds experimental evidence that the modification of the momentum spectrum of D mesons observed in Pb-Pb collisions with respect to pp collisions is due to strong final-state effects induced by hot partonic matter.

Abstract
Objectives: Lower respiratory tract infection is one of the most important causes of morbidity and mortality. However establishing a microbial diagnosis for patients with lower respiratory tract infection is still challenging and is often achieved in only half of cases by conventional methods. This study was designed to compare the fast responsive PCR method with the culture method in lower respiratory tract infections and to evaluate the reliability of multiplex PCR method. Methods: One hundred ninety seven patients with the symptoms of acute lower respiratory tract infection, and diagnosed with community-acquired pneumonia, acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and exacerbations of bronchiectasis were included in the study. Both culture and PCR methods was performed for the isolation of most commonly seen bacteria, from sputum, nasopharyngeal swabs and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid samples. Results: While at least one bacterial isolation was determined in 62 (31.5%) of all patients with culture method, this number increased to 125 (63.5%) with multiplex PCR. The bacteria most commonly identified by PCR were S. pneumoniae (32%) and H. influenzae (31%). There was a significant difference between PCR and culture in terms of multi-factor detection rates (p<0.005). Multiple bacteria were detected in only two cases in cultures; however, multiple pathogens were detected in 47 cases with PCR. Conclusions: Conventional methods, such as culture and serology are not always adequate to detect the pathogens in lower respiratory tract. Real-time PCR assays proved highly sensitive and rapid. The prevalence of bacteria and multiple agent detected by real-time PCR compared with culture was substantially higher. Widespread use of PCR methods, by providing the immediate and appropriate ''agent specific antibiotic treatment'' of LRTI, will help reduce failure and contributes to a reduction in antibiotic resistance.

Abstract
Safety issues have been raised about dabigatran. We aimed to investigate the occurrence of safety outcomes in patients who had atrial fibrillation and a risk of stroke. We analyzed 439 patients prescribed dabigatran (n = 220) or warfarin (n = 219). Ischemic stroke occurred in 15 (6.8%) patients in the warfarin group versus 5 (5.2%) patients in the 110-mg group versus 1 (0.8%) patient in the 150-mg dabigatran group ( P = .015). Intracranial hemorrhage occurred in 6 (2.7%) patients in the warfarin group versus 3 (2.4%) patients in the 150-mg dabigatran group ( P = .104). Death from any cause occurred in 10 (4.6%) patients in the warfarin group versus 1 (1.0%) patient in the 110-mg dabigatran group ( P = .005). Dabigatran was associated with less ischemic stroke and death from any cause than warfarin. Dabigatran may be a better option for stroke prophylaxis, where recommended monitoring with warfarin is suboptimal.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to provide detailed information about the arterial vascularization of the splenium of the corpus callosum (CC). The splenium is unique in that it is part of the largest commissural tract in the brain and a region in which pathologies are seen frequently. An exact description of the arterial vascularization of this part of the CC remains under debate. Thirty adult human brains (60 hemispheres) were obtained from routine autopsies. Cerebral arteries were separately cannulated and injected with colored latex. Then, the brains were fixed in formaldehyde, and dissections were performed using a surgical microscope. The diameter of the arterial branches supplying the splenium of the CC at their origin was investigated, and the vascularization patterns of these branches were observed. Vascular supply to the splenium was provided by the anterior pericallosal artery (40%) from the anterior circulation and by the posterior pericallosal artery (88%) and posterior accessory pericallosal artery (50%) from the posterior circulation. The vascularization pattern of the splenium differs in each hemisphere and is usually supplied by multiple branches. The arterial vascularization of the splenium of the CC was studied comprehensively considering the ongoing debate and the inadequacy of the studies on this issue currently available in the literature. This anatomical knowledge is essential during the treatment of pathologies in this region and especially for splenial arteriovenous malformations.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Clinical samples from 433 patients pre-diagnosed with tuberculosis in Konya, Turkey, were investigated prospectively to compare the GenoType(®) MTBC test (GenoType(®) MTBC) with conventional "gold standard" culture methods. MATERIAL AND METHODS Lowenstein Jensen (LJ) and Mycobacteria Growth Indicator Tube (MGIT)-960 culture methods and GenoType(®) MTBC were performed together. RESULTS Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis) detection rates were 16.2% by culture methods, 15.4% by GenoType(®) MTBC, and 6% by acid-fast bacilli microscopy. The LJ or MGIT-960 with GenoType(®) MTBC detected M. tuberculosis in 12 samples each that were negative according to the other culture method alone. Among 70 M. tuberculosis-positive samples, detection rates were 37% (26/70) by microscopy and 82.8% (58/70) by LJ and MGIT-960, but 95.7% (67/70) by GenoType(®) MTBC. CONCLUSIONS GenoType(®) MTBC may be used as a beneficial adjunct test to culture methods for the detection of M. tuberculosis.

Abstract
Tuberculosis is a common infectious disease caused by various strains of mycobacteria, usually Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB). Various liquid or solid media are used for the diagnosis of tuberculosis. TK Rapid Mycobacterial Culture System has been developed recently. In our study, we aimed to compare TK Rapid Mycobacterial Culture System with LJ and MGIT systems in the diagnosis of tuberculosis. 200 clinical specimens (152 sputum, 41 Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BAL), 4 gastric aspirations, 2 urine and 1 wound) obtained from 192 patients from different clinics were included for the diagnosis of TB. All specimens were decontaminated by using the same-common procedure in all the methods. The obtained sediment was used for inoculation for the BACTEC MGIT 960, TK and LJ. Additionally, smears were prepared from the residual suspension for Ehrlich-Ziehl-Neelsen (EZN) staining for microscopic examination. Contamination was observed in 23 sputum and 4 BAL samples. Contamination rates for TK, LJ, and BACTEC MGIT 960 systems were determined as 3 (1.5%), 13 (6.5%), and 18 (9%) respectively. Mycobacterium tuberculosis growth was determined as 15 (7.5%), 14 (7%) and 13 (6.5%) by TK culture system, MGIT and LJ, respectively. In our study, the total mean detection times of Mycobacterium tuberculosis by the LJ, TK, and MGIT method were 20.1, 17.1, and 8.3 days, respectively. TK system showed a dramatically lower contamination rate than the others. There was no difference in growth rates for each of the three methods. We concluded that the TK culture system is disadvantageous in terms of turnaround time.

Abstract
The aim of this study was the investigation of effects of the metenolone enanthate (ME) that is used among athletes as doping and muscle amplifier, on hearts of male and female rats that are in puberty using morphometrical methods. A total of 36 rats which were divided into three separate groups (Experiment, ME; vehicle, PO; control, C) each consisting of 6 male and 6 female rats were used. 0.5 mg/kg metenolone enanthate was applied intraperitoneally into experiment subjects 5 times a week over a period of 4 weeks. At the end of experiment, rats were euthanized and their hearts were cut at the level of musculus papillaris after the fixation in formalin. Hearts were taken out and embedded in paraffin wax. Photos were taken at cut surfaces, and thickness, diameters and surface area levels were measured. Left ventriculus mass (LVM) and left ventriculus mass index (LVMI) were calculated. In the study LVM (p<0.005) and LVMI (p<0.05) were found to be significantly higher in the ME group in females whereas left ventricular lumen diameter (LVLD) were found to be significantly lower (p<0.05). Thus left ventricular hypertrophy development was observed. LVM and LVMI were found to be similar in ME and C groups among male rats and the highest level of these data were found in the group. LVM and LVMI were higher among females (p<0.006). In conclusion, it has been shown that the adverse effects of ME on heart were developing starting from puberty and resulting with the enlargement of the heart and left ventricular hypertrophy and especially among females this condition was more evident. It has also been discussed that the continuous use of drugs may further enhance this condition.

Abstract
Cyclosporine A (CsA) is a drug used in autoimmune disorders and organ transplantations. Omega 3 fatty acids (O-3) and sesame oil (SO) have antioxidant properties. We aimed to investigate and compare the protective effects of O-3 and SO against CsA-induced nephrotoxicity. Seven groups of male Wistar albino rats were included in the study. In group 1 (control), saline was administered, and in group 2, CsA (subcutaneously) was administered. In group 3, CsA+SO (orally; p.o.) was given; in group 4, CsA+O-3 (p.o.) was given; and in group 5, CsA+SO+O-3 was given. In group 6, SO was administered, and in group 7, O-3 was administered. After 15 days of treatment, kidneys were excised. Histopathological evaluation, apoptotic cell count, and renal/hepatic function tests were performed. In group 2, vacuolar degeneration and necrosis of tubular cells as well as hemorrhagic foci were observed; the apoptotic cell number was higher than in the control (P < 0.001). In groups 3, 4, and 5, tubular scores and apoptotic cell count were lower than in group 2 (P < 0.01 and P < 0.001, respectively). In groups 6 and 7, healthy renal histology and a few apoptotic cells were determined. In groups 2, 3, 4, and 5, blood urea nitrogen was higher and albumin was lower than in the control (P < 0.001). Liver enzymes were unchanged. O-3/SO showed similar protective effects against CsA-induced nephrotoxicity, as revealed by a remarkable decrease in histopathological changes and apoptotic cell count. However, impaired renal function tests were not improved with O-3/SO treatment. SO and O-3 can be used as chemoprotectants against CsA.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the occurrence of bacterial translocation and to assess the impact of breastfeeding on bacterial translocation in the animal model of necrotizing enterocolitis. METHODS A total of 20 neonate Sprague-Dawley rats were enrolled in the study. Rats were randomly allocated into either control or study group just after birth. Ten newborn rats in the control group were left with their mother to be breast-fed. In contrary, necrotizing enterocolitis group consisted of neonates that were separated from their mothers, housed in an incubator and were gavaged with a special rodent formula three times daily. Survival rates, weight changes, and morphologic scoring obtained after microscopic evaluation were determined as microbiologic evaluation criteria. RESULTS All the rats in the control group survived, while 1 (10 %) rat died in the necrotizing enterocolitis group. Mortality rates of the two groups were similar. All the formula-fed animals in the necrotizing enterocolitis group had significant weight loss compared to the breast milk-fed rats in the control group (p<0.05). A total of 7 (70 %) and 2 (20 %) E. coli growths were identified in the bowel lumen, liver, and spleen of necrotizing enterocolitis and control groups, respectively. This difference was statistically significant. In peritoneal smear cultures, a total of 3 (30 %) growths were detected in the necrotizing enterocolitis group and 1 (10 %) growth in the control group. CONCLUSION As the result of a disturbance in the intestinal flora and impairment of the intestinal barrier in necrotizing enterocolitis, microrganisms in the bowel pass through the intestinal barrier and reach the liver and the spleen via the hematogenous route. This condition is closely related to the impairment of physiological and functional features of the intestinal barrier and is independent from the degree of intestinal injury. Bacterial translocation should be remembered in cases suspected of necrotizing enterocolitis, and a rapid and effective treatment algorithm should be applied in such circumstances (Tab. 3, Fig. 3, Ref. 21). Abstract
Ca3Co4O9 has a unique structure that leads to exceptionally high thermoelectric transport. Here we report the achievement of a 27% increase in the room-temperature in-plane Seebeck coefficient of Ca3Co4O9 thin films. We combine aberration-corrected Z-contrast imaging, atomic-column resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy, and density-functional calculations to show that the increase is caused by stacking faults with Co4+-ions in a higher spin state compared to that of bulk Ca3Co4O9. The higher Seebeck coefficient makes the Ca3Co4O9 system suitable for many high temperature waste-heat-recovery applications.

Abstract
Unbalanced translocation involving both chromosomes 8q and 15q trisomies are extremely rare events. We present two different cases with unbalanced chromosomal rearrangements both derived from maternal balanced translocations. The first case is a 4 year-old boy with speech delay, dysmorphic facial features (inc. cleft lip/palate), behavioural disturbances and growth retardation, who had partial 8q trisomy and partial 21p monosomy resulting from a maternal t(8;21) reciprocal translocation. The other case is a 2 day-old boy with ventriculomegaly, dysmorphic facial features and heart defects (patent ductus arteriosus and atrial septal defect) who had partial 15q trisomy and partial 9p monosomy resulting from a maternal t(9;15) reciprocal translocation.

Abstract
The incommensurately layered cobalt oxide Ca(3)Co(4)O(9) exhibits an unusually high Seebeck coefficient as a polycrystalline bulk material, making it ideally suited for many high temperature thermoelectric applications. In this paper, we investigate properties of Ca(3)Co(4)O(9) thin films grown on cubic perovskite SrTiO(3), LaAlO(3), and (La(0.3)Sr(0.7))(Al(0.65)Ta(0.35))O(3) substrates and on hexagonal Al(2)O(3) (sapphire) substrates using the pulsed laser deposition technique. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy analysis indicate strain-free growth of films, irrespective of the substrate. However, depending on the lattice and symmetry mismatch, defect-free growth of the hexagonal CoO(2) layer is stabilized only after a critical thickness and, in general, we observe the formation of a stable Ca(2)CoO(3) buffer layer near the substrate-film interface. Beyond this critical thickness, a large concentration of CoO(2) stacking faults is observed, possibly due to weak interlayer interaction in this layered material. We propose that these stacking faults have a significant impact on the Seebeck coefficient and we report higher values in thinner Ca(3)Co(4)O(9) films due to additional phonon scattering sites, necessary for improved thermoelectric properties.
