Abstract
26Al is an important radioisotope in astrophysics that provides evidence of ongoing nucleosynthesis in the Galaxy. The 23Na(α, p)26Mg reaction has been identified by a sensitivity study as being one of the most important reactions for the production of 26Al in the convective C/Ne burning shell of massive stars. Owing to large uncertainties in previous experimental data, model calculations are used for the reaction rate of 23Na(α, p)26Mg in this sensitivity study. Current experimental data suggest a reaction rate a factor of ∼40 higher than model calculations. However, a new measurement of this reaction cross section has been made in inverse kinematics in the energy range E(c.m.)=1.28-3.15 MeV at TRIUMF, and found to be in reasonable agreement with the model calculation. A new reaction rate is calculated and tight constraints on the uncertainty in the production of 26Al, due to this reaction, are determined.

Abstract
Serine 62 (Ser62) phosphorylation affects the c-Myc protein stability in cancer cells. However, the mechanism for dephosphorylating c-Myc is not well understood. In this study, we identified carboxyl-terminal domain RNA polymerase II polypeptide A small phosphatase 1 (SCP1) as a novel phosphatase specifically dephosphorylating c-Myc Ser62. Ectopically expressed SCP1 strongly dephosphorylated c-Myc Ser62, destabilized c-Myc protein and suppressed c-Myc transcriptional activity. Knockdown of SCP1 increased the c-Myc protein levels in liver cancer cells. SCP1 interacted with c-Myc both in vivo and in vitro. In addition, Ser245 at the C-terminus of SCP1 was essential for its phosphatase activity towards c-Myc. Functionally, SCP1 negatively regulated the cancer cell proliferation. Collectively, our findings indicate that SCP1 is a potential tumor suppressor for liver cancers through dephosphorylating c-Myc Ser62.

Abstract
Oxidative stress, which poses a threat to reproductive health, causes many serious female reproductive diseases. In this study, we investigated whether proanthocyanidins (PC) have a protective effect against oxidative stress-induced ovarian damage. Forty female ICR mice were randomized into 4 groups: a control group, a control plus PC group, a 3-nitropropionic acid (3-NPA) group, and a 3-NPA plus PC group. An ovarian oxidative stress model induced by 3-NPA was constructed using female ICR mice. After the animals were sacrificed, their ovaries were collected to measure reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), and the mRNA expression levels of relevant granulosa cell apoptosis genes (Bcl-2, Bax, Bim, FasL, and caspase-3). We also conducted a histological evaluation of granulosa cell apoptosis and follicular atresia. The results showed that compared to the 3-NPA group, ROS levels and activities of T-SOD and CAT in the 3-NPA plus PC group were significantly decreased (P < 0.05), while the ratio of Bcl-2 to Bax in the 3-NPA plus PC group were significantly increased (P < 0.05). mRNA expression levels of Bim, FasL, and caspase-3 in the 3-NPA plus PC group were significantly decreased (P < 0.05), and the percentage of atretic follicles and granulosa cell apoptosis in the 3-NPA plus PC group was significantly decreased (P < 0.05). Collectively, these data indicate that PC has significant protective effects against damage induced by oxidative stress in mouse ovaries. The mechanisms of protection may be related to antioxidation and apoptosis reduction.

Abstract
Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) with partial least squares regression (PLSR) has been applied to measuring the acidity of iron ore, which can be defined by the concentrations of oxides: CaO, MgO, Al₂O₃, and SiO₂. With the conventional internal standard calibration, it is difficult to establish the calibration curves of CaO, MgO, Al₂O₃, and SiO₂ in iron ore due to the serious matrix effects. PLSR is effective to address this problem due to its excellent performance in compensating the matrix effects. In this work, fifty samples were used to construct the PLSR calibration models for the above-mentioned oxides. These calibration models were validated by the 10-fold cross-validation method with the minimum root-mean-square errors (RMSE). Another ten samples were used as a test set. The acidities were calculated according to the estimated concentrations of CaO, MgO, Al₂O₃, and SiO₂ using the PLSR models. The average relative error (ARE) and RMSE of the acidity achieved 3.65% and 0.0048, respectively, for the test samples.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Established closure techniques for the pancreatic remnant after distal pancreatectomy include stapler, suture and anastomotic closure. However, controversy remains regarding the ideal technique; therefore, the aim of this study was to compare closure techniques and risk of postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF). METHODS A systematic review was carried out according to PRISMA guidelines for studies published before January 2014 that compared at least two closure techniques for the pancreatic remnant in distal pancreatectomy. A random-effects model was constructed using weighted odds ratios (ORs). RESULTS Thirty-seven eligible studies matched the inclusion criteria and 5252 patients who underwent distal pancreatectomy were included. The primary outcome measure, the POPF rate, ranged 0 from to 70 per cent. Meta-analysis of the 31 studies comparing stapler versus suture closure showed that the stapler technique had a significantly lower rate of POPF, with a combined OR of 0.77 (95 per cent c.i. 0.61 to 0.98; P = 0.031). Anastomotic closure was associated with a significantly lower POPF rate than suture closure (OR 0.55, 0.31 to 0.98; P = 0.042). Combined stapler and suture closure had significantly lower POPF rates than suture closure alone, but no significant difference compared with stapler closure alone. CONCLUSION The use of stapler closure or anastomotic closure for the pancreatic remnant after distal pancreatectomy significantly reduces POPF rates compared with suture closure. The combination of stapler and suture closure shows superiority over suture closure alone.

Abstract
Follicular atresia, a key phenomenon in follicle development, eliminates most of the follicles in mammalian ovaries. To investigate the molecular mechanism of follicular atresia in porcine ovaries, we investigated the mRNA expression of three important cell death ligand-receptor systems and Fox O1 in follicles with a diameter of 3-5 mm. The phosphorylation and subcellular localization of Fox O1 during granulosa cell apoptosis was also determined. TRAIL and Fas L played an important role in follicular atresia at this stage. Fox O1 expression was upregulated during atresia, and was confined to the nucleus of granulosa cells; however, phosphorylated Fox O1 was localized to the cytoplasm. These results suggest Fox O1 involvement in the regulation of TRAIL and Fas L expression during follicular atresia in pigs.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this paper was to observe the metabolic mode of 32P at the level of sub-target nuclides. METHODS Twenty-one cancer patients were locally injected with 32P-labelled glass microspheres and then observed to determine the equalization of 32P radionuclide metabolism in the tumor target. We imaged 3 sub-target regions of interest (ROI) 1/3 the size in both the anterior and posterior directions by bremsstrahlung single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) X-ray imaging. The radiation dose parameters of the beta rays including the initial dose rate, the effective half-life, and the effective half-life of the cumulative radiation dose were then calculated. RESULTS The radionuclide metabolism of the 21 complete tumor targets complied with the mono-compartmental model of index metabolism, but the level of tumor control did not correlate with radiation dose parameters. In contrast, the radionuclide metabolism of the 63 sub-targets did not comply with the mono-compartmental model. Instead, 32 sub-targets were better represented by bi-compartmental or tri-compartmental metabolic models. None of the remaining 31 sub-targets complied with index metabolism. CONCLUSION The complexity of the radiation dose at the sub-target level partially explains poor local tumor control. Future studies will be required to improve the expression of internal exposure to radiation dose parameters.

Abstract
A modified algorithm of background removal based on wavelet transform was developed for spectrum correction in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). The optimal type of wavelet function, decomposition level and scaling factor γ were determined by the root-mean-square error of calibration (RMSEC) of the univariate regression model of the analysis element, which is considered as the optimization criteria. After background removal by this modified algorithm with RMSEC, the root-mean-square error of cross-validation (RMSECV) and the average relative error (ARE) criteria, the accuracy of quantitative analysis on chromium (Cr), vanadium (V), cuprum (Cu), and manganese (Mn) in the low alloy steel was all improved significantly. The results demonstrated that the algorithm developed is an effective pretreatment method in LIBS to significantly improve the accuracy in the quantitative analysis.

Abstract
A new approach to polymer identification by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) with adjusting spectral weightings (ASW) was developed in this work aiming at improving the identification accuracy. This approach has been achieved through increasing the intensities of specific characteristic spectral lines which are important to polymer identification but difficult to be excited. Using the ASW method, the identification accuracies of all 11 polymers were increased to nearly 100%, while the accuracies of PE, PU, PP and PC were only 98%, 74%, 90% and 98%, respectively, without using the ASW method.

Abstract
Background: The multidrug resistance and distant metastasis of cholangiocarcinoma result in high postoperative recurrence and low long-term survival rates. It has been demonstrated that the ectopic expression of miR-200 suppresses the multidrug resistance and metastasis of cancer. However, the expression and function of miR-200 in cholangiocarcinoma has not yet been described. Methods: In this study, we identified dysregulated microRNAs (miRNAs, miR) in cholangiocarcinoma tissue by microarray analysis, and subsequent real-time PCR and northern blot analyses validated the expression of candidate miR. We performed functional analyses and investigated the relationship between miR-200b/c expression and the properties of cholangiocarcinoma cells. A dual luciferase assay was applied to examine the effect of miRNAs on the 3′-UTR of target genes, and we demonstrated the function of the target gene by siRNA transfection identifying the downstream pathway via western blotting. Results: We found significantly downregulated expression of four miR-200 family members (miR-200a/b/c/429) and then confirmed that ectopic miR-200b/200c inhibits the migration and invasion of cholangiocarcinoma cells both in vitro and in vivo. We found that miR-200b/c influenced the tumourigenesis of cholangiocarcinoma cells including their tumour-initiating capacity, sphere formation, and drug resistance. We further found that miR-200b/c regulated migration and invasion capacities by directly targeting rho-kinase 2 and regulated tumorigenic properties by directly targeting SUZ12 (a subunit of a polycomb repressor complex). Conclusion: Our study shows that miR-200b/c has a critical role in the regulation of the tumorigenic and metastatic capacity of cholangiocarcinoma and reveals the probable underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
To improve the accuracy of quantitative analysis in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, the plasma produced by a Nd:YAG laser from steel targets was confined by a cavity. A number of elements with low concentrations, such as vanadium (V), chromium (Cr), and manganese (Mn), in the steel samples were investigated. After the optimization of the cavity dimension and laser fluence, significant enhancement factors of 4.2, 3.1, and 2.87 in the emission intensity of V, Cr, and Mn lines, respectively, were achieved at a laser fluence of 42.9 J/cm(2) using a hemispherical cavity (diameter: 5 mm). More importantly, the correlation coefficient of the V I 440.85/Fe I 438.35 nm was increased from 0.946 (without the cavity) to 0.981 (with the cavity); and similar results for Cr I 425.43/Fe I 425.08 nm and Mn I 476.64/Fe I 492.05 nm were also obtained. Therefore, it was demonstrated that the accuracy of quantitative analysis with low concentration elements in steel samples was improved, because the plasma became uniform with spatial confinement. The results of this study provide a new pathway for improving the accuracy of quantitative analysis of LIBS.

Abstract
Alkaloids from Rhizoma coptidis and flavonoids from Radix scutellariae were prepared in 2 separate units using a Xiexin multiple-unit drug delivery system (XXMU) to avoid the interactions that occur in the Xiexin decoction (XXD), which reduce oral bioavailability. Similarity factors (f 2 ) were calculated for the release of each component, and 4 equations were fitted to describe the release mechanism. In vivo pharmacokinetic studies were undertaken in rats to compare orally administered XXMU to a XXD powder suspension. No significant differences in the in vitro release properties of the 4 main components were observed between the individual pellets and the entire XXMU delivery system. The release mechanisms for coptisine, berberine, palmatine and baicalin from XXMU involved non-Fickian transport, non-Fickian transport, Fickian diffusion and zero-order release, respectively. The AUC(0-6 h), Cmax1(0-0.5 h) and Cmax3(2-6 h) values for berberine were significantly higher for XXMU than for XXD, but significant differences between the 2 dosage forms were not observed for pharmacokinetic parameters of baicalin. Interactions between flavonoids and alkaloids were reduced in XXMU, and the oral bioavailability of berberine was improved. The successful application of a multiple-unit drug delivery system may provide a method to improve the oral bioavailability of traditional Chinese medicines with multiple components.

Abstract
Genetic rearrangement by recombination is one of the major driving forces for genome evolution, and recombination is known to occur in non-random, discreet recombination sites within the genome. Mapping of recombination sites has proved to be difficult, particularly, in the human MHC region that is complicated by both population variation and highly polymorphic HLA genes. To overcome these problems, HLA-typed individuals from three representative populations: Asian, European and African were used to generate phased HLA haplotypes. Extended haplotype homozygosity (EHH) plots constructed from the phased haplotype data revealed discreet EHH drops corresponding to recombination events and these signatures were observed to be different for each population. Surprisingly, the majority of recombination sites detected are unique to each population, rather than being common. Unique recombination sites account for 56.8% (21/37 of total sites) in the Asian cohort, 50.0% (15/30 sites) in Europeans and 63.2% (24/38 sites) in Africans. Validation carried out at a known sperm typing recombination site of 45 kb (HLA-F-telomeric) showed that EHH was an efficient method to narrow the recombination region to 826 bp, and this was further refined to 660 bp by resequencing. This approach significantly enhanced mapping of the genomic architecture within the human MHC, and will be useful in studies to identify disease risk genes.

Abstract
We investigate properties of dark solitons under competing nonlocal cubic-local quintic nonlinearities. Analytical results, based on a variational approach and confirmed by direct numerical simulations, reveal the existence of a unique dark soliton solutions with their width being independent of the degree of nonlocality, due to the competing cubic-quintic nonlinearities.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infections in women with different gynaecological diseases (GDs) and ages in southwest China. With the assay of reverse dot blot, a total of 5544 cervical samples, including 1008 normal and 4536 abnormal specimens from women with GDs, were assayed for HPV detection. For the normal group, 20.2% (204/1008) tested positive for HPV, of which 40.2% (82/204) were high-risk (HR-HPV) genotypes. In the 4536 abnormal samples, 1569 women (34.6%) tested positive for HPV: 73.5% (1153/1569) had a single infection, 17.7% (277/1569) dual infection and 8.8% (138/1569) multiple HPV infection. Of 1569 HPV-positive specimens, 58.7% (921/1569) were infected with only HR-HPV genotypes. Significant differences in HPV infections were found among women of different ages (P < 0.01), number of pregnancies (P < 0.01), GDs (P < 0.01) and age at first sex (P < 0.01). In the present study, we found a high prevalence of HPV infection in women with GDs in southwest China. In addition to HPV types 16 and 18, a significant proportion of other HR-HPV genotypes were detected in this population.

Abstract
Benzene exposure causes acute myeloid leukemia and hematotoxicity, shown as suppression of mature blood and myeloid progenitor cell numbers. As the leukemia-related aneuploidies monosomy 7 and trisomy 8 previously had been detected in the mature peripheral blood cells of exposed workers, we hypothesized that benzene could cause leukemia through the induction of these aneuploidies in hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells. We measured loss and gain of chromosomes 7 and 8 by fluorescence in situ hybridization in interphase colony-forming unit-granulocyte-macrophage (CFU-GM) cells cultured from otherwise healthy benzene-exposed (n=28) and unexposed (n=14) workers. CFU-GM monosomy 7 and 8 levels (but not trisomy) were significantly increased in subjects exposed to benzene overall, compared with levels in the control subjects (P=0.0055 and P=0.0034, respectively). Levels of monosomy 7 and 8 were significantly increased in subjects exposed to <10 p.p.m. (20%, P=0.0419 and 28%, P=0.0056, respectively) and ≥ 10 p.p.m. (48%, P=0.0045 and 32%, 0.0354) benzene, compared with controls, and significant exposure-response trends were detected (P(trend)=0.0033 and 0.0057). These data show that monosomies 7 and 8 are produced in a dose-dependent manner in the blood progenitor cells of workers exposed to benzene, and may be mechanistically relevant biomarkers of early effect for benzene and other leukemogens.

Abstract
Two hundred and thirty-six novel human leukocyte antigen (HLA) alleles are described from volunteer donors of the China Marrow Donor Program: 71 HLA-A alleles, 79 HLA-B alleles, 43 HLA-C, 16 HLA-DRB1 alleles, 26 HLA-DQB1 and 1 HLA-DPB1. Two hundred and thirteen (90.3%) of the 236 novel alleles are single nucleotide substitution variants when compared with their most homologous allele. Seventy-eight of these single nucleotide variants are silent substitutions. The remaining novel alleles differ from their most similar allele by two to four nucleotide substitutions. Some of the novel alleles encode amino acid changes at positions not previously reported to be polymorphic, such as codons 57, 62, 67, 41 and 52 in HLA-A alleles; codons 133, 156, 201 and 215 in HLA-B alleles; codons 74, 208 and 225 in HLA-C; codons 25, 32 and 72 in HLA-DRB1; codons 20, 39 and 77 in HLA-DQB1.

Abstract
PURPOSE To examine the relationship between corneal biomechanical properties and the degree of myopia. METHODS Chinese subjects (n=172, age: 11-65 years) were divided into diagnostic groups with non-myopia (spherical equivalence (SE)>-0.50 D), low (-3.00 ≤ SE ≤ -0.50 D), moderate (-6.00 ≤ SE < -3.00 D), and high myopia (SE<-6.00 D). Only the right eye of each subject was analyzed. Central corneal thickness (CCT) was measured by optical coherence tomography. An ocular response analyzer was used to measure corneal hysteresis (CH), corneal resistance factor (CRF), intraocular pressure (IOP), and corneal compensated IOP (IOPcc). Refraction was measured by both automated and subjective refractometry and expressed as SE. RESULTS CH was significantly lower in high myopia compared with both low and non-myopia (P ≤ 0.002). CCT was 1.5 times more correlated to CH variation compared with refraction. Similarly, CRF was four times more dependent on CCT than refraction. CH (P<0.001) or CRF (P=0.005) was positively correlated to refraction. Both IOP and IOPcc were negatively correlated to refraction (P<0.001), respectively. CONCLUSIONS CH decreases only in high myopia. Refraction is positively correlated to both CH and CRF but negatively correlated to both IOP and IOPcc. These results indicate that the mechanical strength in anterior segment of the eye is compromised in high myopia. In addition, high myopia may increase the risk of glaucoma.

Abstract
An improved method treating surfactant wastewater by the addition of semiconductor material such as nano-sized TiO2 or ZnO to activated carbon (AC) with microwave (MW) irradiation was proposed so as to assist efficient degradation of organic pollutants. A series of degradation experiments of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) were carried out under MW irradiation in the presence of AC/TiO2 or AC/ZnO. The influences of catalyst dose, irradiation time, initial SDBS concentration and solution acidity on the degradation were assessed in detail. The results showed that the addition of TiO2 or ZnO obviously promoted the degradation and AC/TiO2 system displayed higher catalytic activity under MW irradiation. Thus the method of MW irradiation with AC/TiO2 or AC/ZnO revealed many advantages of rapid degradation rate, short irradiation time, low cost, no residual intermediates and no secondary pollution in applications.

Abstract
We propose a simple microfluidic device for protein preconcentration based on the electrokinetic trapping principle. It comprises a narrow Nafion strip that is simply cut from a commercial membrane and is integrated into a molded poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) microfluidic structure using a guiding channel. Mechanically clamping the PDMS/Nafion assembly with a glass substrate results in a rapid prototypable, leak-tight, and easily disposable device. Our device preconcentrates negatively charged fluorescent proteins located at the anodic microfluidic compartment side of the Nafion strip within a few minutes and up to a concentration factor of 10(4). Moreover, we present a numerical study of the preconcentration effect by solving the coupled Poisson, Nernst-Planck, and Navier-Stokes equations for our type of device, which provides microscopic insight into the mechanism of preconcentration. The electrical field across the ion-permselective Nafion generates concentration polarization, i.e., ion depletion at the anodic side and ion enrichment at the cathodic side for both types of ions, with a local excess of mobile positive ions in the depleted concentration polarization zone, inducing a nonequilibrium electrical double layer in close proximity to the Nafion membrane. A voltage difference applied over the anodic compartment is used to generate the electrophoretic flow velocity of the negatively charged tracer biomolecules. This, in combination with the electroosmotic flow in the opposite direction, which originates from the fixed charges on the channel walls and the induced space charge near the membrane, provides the basis for the local preconcentration of the negative tracer biomolecules.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate patterns of non-fatal unintentional injuries among "left-behind children" in Macheng, China. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted in September and October, 2006. Age-specific and sex-specific injury rates were calculated. RESULTS 3019 students were interviewed in six schools. Of these, 1182 were identified as "left-behind"; 62.3% had both parents away from home, and 37.7% had one parent away from home. The annual injury rate per 1000 among left-behind children was more than twice that of children living with both parents: 252.9 (95% CI 233.0 to 273.0) and 119.8 (95% CI 105 to 134), respectively. Male left-behind children had the highest annual injury rate: 316.4 (95% CI 295 to 338) per 1000. The three leading external causes of injury were similar for both groups of children: falls (33.8%); mechanical injuries (16.2%); and animal bites (14.5%).The location where injuries occurred were home (32.0%), school (26.0%) and roadways (23.9%) for left-behind children. There were no significant associations between the identified guardian and injury mechanism. CONCLUSIONS A large proportion of students in the schools of rural Macheng are left-behind children. Left-behind children have a higher injury rate than those in the care of both parents. This may be important in the development of injury prevention strategies in rural communities in China.

Abstract
Background: In Xuanwei County, Yunnan Province, China, lung cancer mortality rates in both males and females are among the highest in China. Methods: We evaluated differential effects of smoking on lung cancer mortality before and after household stove improvement with chimney to reduce exposure to smoky coal emissions in the unique cohort in Xuanwei, China. Effects of independent variables on lung cancer mortality were measured as hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals using a multivariable Cox regression model that included separate time-dependent variables for smoking duration (years) before and after stove improvement. Results and conclusion: We found that the effect of smoking on lung cancer risk becomes considerably stronger after chimney installation and consequent reduction of indoor coal smoke exposure.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the clinical features of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients with diffuse alveolar hemorrhage (DAH). The medical records of 29 patients with DAH among 2133 SLE patients admitted to Peking Union Medical College Hospital from January 2004 to January 2009 were reviewed in this retrospective study. It was found that hypoxemia (100%), dyspnea (90%), cough (79%) and fever (72%), rather than hemoptysis (66%), were the most common symptoms. The most common extrapulmonary presentation was renal involvement (90%). In about 60% of patients nosocomial infection was also present. The mean drop in hemoglobin was 32 ± 10.9 g/l. Mean Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI) was 17 ± 9. All patients received high-dose corticosteroid therapy and most were also given immunosuppressive agents. Rates of concomitant nosocomial infection and mechanical ventilation in non-survivors were higher than those of survivors (p < 0.05). DAH is a rare and catastrophic event in SLE. DAH can occur at any stage of the disease course; it usually occurs in patients with active SLE, and is frequently complicated by lupus nephritis. Some patients may have no hemoptysis. Early aggressive management with high-dose steroids and cyclophosphamide is advocated.
