Abstract
BACKGROUND CD14 plays an important role in recognising the tuberculosis (TB) antigen and initiating immune response. CD14-159C/T polymorphism has been reported to be associated with susceptibility to TB in some, but not all studies. OBJECTIVE To comprehensively evaluate the correlation between CD14-159C/T polymorphism and susceptibility to TB. METHODS Relevant studies from six English-language databases were searched up to 15 March 2013. Crude odd ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence interval (CIs) were calculated to assess the strength of associations. RESULTS Eight eligible studies including 3583 subjects were retained for the meta-analysis. T-allele and TT homozygosis might increase TB risk in the overall analysis (T vs. C: OR 1.30, 95%CI 1.03-1.64, P = 0.03 and TT vs. CC+CT: OR 1.52, 95%CI 1.12-2.08, P = 0.01). Similar correlations were observed among human immunodeficiency virus negative subjects. Strong associations were also found between CD14-159C/T and TB in Asians. Asian individuals with the T-allele and the TT genotype had a significantly increased risk of TB (T vs. C: OR 1.46, 95%CI 1.27-1.68, P = 0.00; TT vs. CC: OR 1.83, 95%CI 1.38-2.44, P = 0.00 and TT vs. CC+CT: OR 1.84, 95%CI 1.55-2.19, P = 0.00). No associations were detected in the pulmonary TB and extra-pulmonary TB groups. CONCLUSION CD14-159C/T contributes to TB susceptibility; the T-allele and TT homozygosis are potential risk factors, particularly in Asians.

Abstract
Silicon is of great interest for use as the anode material in lithium-ion batteries due to its high capacity. However, certain properties of silicon, such as a large volume expansion during the lithiation process and the low diffusion rate of lithium in silicon, result in fast capacity degradation in limited charge/discharge cycles, especially at high current rate. Therefore, the use of silicon in real battery applications is limited. The idea of using porous silicon, to a large extent, addresses the above-mentioned issues simultaneously. In this review, we discuss the merits of using porous silicon for anodes through both theoretical and experimental study. Recent progress in the preparation of porous silicon through the template-assisted approach and the non-template approach have been highlighted. The battery performance in terms of capacity and cyclability of each structure is evaluated.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The clinical application of porcine-derived xenotransplants is limited by the potential risk of infection due to the presence of porcine endogenous retrovirus (PERV) in tissues, organs, and cells. The establishment of pig fibroblasts with low PERV expression and without PERV-C can provide a nuclear donor to generate a safer transgenic pig. METHODS In this study, we obtained Chinese Experimental Miniature Pig fibroblasts (CEMPF) with low expression of PERV and none of PERV-C. We designed small interfering RNA (siRNA) expressed as short hairpin RNAs (shRNA) based on the highly conserved gag and pol regions of PERV and screened for the most effective siRNA to inhibit PERV expression. The selected shRNA-pol3 fragment was introduced into the CEMPF to obtain an engineered CEMPF stably expressing shRNA-pol3. RESULTS The PERV mRNA expression level in the engineered CEMPF was only 7.9% of that observed in fibroblasts from wild-type CEMPF, PERV P15E protein expression was significantly reduced. HEK293 cells cocultured with the supernate of the engineered CEMPF showed no PERV infection. CONCLUSIONS Engineered CEMPF, which possess no risk of PERV-A/C infection, can serve as a nuclear donor to generate xenograft donor pigs.

Abstract
We report structural, magnetic, dielectric and thermal properties of single-crystal BaMnO(2.99) and its derivatives BaMn(0.97)Li(0.03)O(3) and Ba(0.97)K(0.03)MnO(3). The hexagonal 15R-BaMnO(2.99) perovskite phase is a known antiferromagnetic insulator that orders at a Néel temperature T(N) = 220 K. We find dilute Li and K doping change the ratio of cubic to hexagonal layers and cause drastic changes in the dielectric and magnetic properties. Unusually large high-temperature magnetoelectric shifts (up to 85%) are observed near temperatures at which pronounced peaks in the dielectric constant are observed for applied electric fields along either the c or a axis, respectively. The temperatures of the dielectric peaks are strongly correlated with anomalies in the c- or a-axis magnetic susceptibility and the specific heat for all compositions studied. All our data suggest that the strongly anisotropic magnetic and dielectric anomalies (which occur near, or above room temperature) originate from the same Mn ion sites, which implies these materials form an exceptional class of magnetoelectrics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Serine protease inhibitor member 3 of clade A (SERPINA3) has been shown as a risk factor for aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage in a Polish population. In the present study, the authors investigated the correlation between the rs4934 polymorphism of SERPINA3 and sporadic intracranial aneurysms in Chinese patients. METHODS The rs4934 polymorphism of SERPINA3 was identified by PCR and Taqman MGB probe analysis in genomic DNA from 275 patients with sporadic intracranial aneurysms (mean age 50.83 +/- 10.78 years) and 361 control participants (mean age 53.21 +/- 10.81 years). Differences in allelic and genotypic frequencies between the patient and control groups were evaluated with the chi(2) test. RESULTS No significant difference was found in either the genotype distribution or allelic frequencies of SERPINA3 between patients and controls. CONCLUSIONS The rs4934 polymorphism of SERPINA3 is not associated with sporadic intracranial aneurysms among individuals of Chinese Han ethnicity.

Abstract
Object
The COL1A2 gene at 7q22.1 has been shown to be associated with familial intracranial aneurysms (IAs) in the Japanese population. In the present study, the authors investigated the correlation between the presence of the rs42524 polymorphism in COL1A2 and the occurrence of sporadic IAs in Chinese patients.
Methods
The polymorphism rs42524 of the COL1A2 gene was identified by polymerase chain reaction–based restriction analysis in genomic DNA from 226 patients with sporadic IAs (mean age 51.49 ± 11.47 years) and 326 control participants (mean age 52.33 ± 10.50 years). Neurological assessments were performed using the Hunt and Hess grading system, and differences in allelic and genotypic frequencies between the patient and control groups were evaluated with the chi-square test.
Results
There was a significant difference in either the genotype distribution (χ2 = 11.99, p = 0.002) or allelic frequencies (χ2 = 11.96, p = 0.001, odds ratio 2.579, 95% confidence interval 1.486–4.476) between patients with IAs and patients in the control group.
Conclusions
The rs42524 polymorphism of COL1A2 could be a genetic risk factor for sporadic IAs among individuals of Chinese Han ethnicity. This study is the first to confirm the association between COL1A2 and IAs.

Abstract
To further confirm at the molecular level that neuronal apoptosis occurs in mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS), the main substrate of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE), 24 resected sclerotic hippocampi from 24 patients with drug-resistant MTLE associated with MTS were studied microscopically, electronmicroscopically and immunohistochemically, with detection of expression of apoptosis-associated genes including bcl-2, p53, bax, fas and caspase-3. Early apoptosis changes were found morphologically in hippocampi from three patients with MTLE using transmission electron microscopy. Positive immunostained neurons for bcl-2, p53, fas and caspase-3 were found in the sclerotic hippocampi of 19/24, 14/24, 22/24 and 20/24 patients respectively, which was statistically different from controls. Correlative analysis showed the expression of p53, fas and caspase-3 were positively correlated with seizure frequency. Apoptosis may contribute to MTS, and seizures may induce apoptosis, and thus contribute to neuronal loss in MTS.

Abstract
In spite of common properties duck orthoreoviruses (DRVs) are antigenically different from other avian orthoreoviruses (ARVs). We analyzed the S-class genome segments of the DRV S12 and compared them with S-class genome segments of other orthoreoviruses compared to those of ARV S1133. The full-length S-class sigmaA, sigmaB, sigmaNS, and sigmaC genes were determined and compared with other ARVs to study the degree of genetic divergence and evolution of DRVs. The alignment of the DRV S12 sigmaA, sigmaB, sigmaNS, and sigmaC genes with DRV 89026 showed 90.0%, 93.6%, 88.0%, and 93.1% nucleotide identity and 97.1%, 94.3%, 95.8%, and 93.7% amino acid identity, respectively. The alignment of the DRV S12 sigmaA, sigmaB, sigmaNS, and sigmaC genes with other ARVs revealed 76.0-77.1%, 52.5-55.1%, 78.4-79.6%, and 2.7-9.9% nucleotide identity and 89.5-91.2%, 61.4-62.0%, 91.6-92.7% and 22.6-26.7% amino acid identity, respectively. Phylogenetic analyses demonstrated that DRVs were quite different from other ARVs and provided the evidence for the diversity among avian orthoreoviruses.

Abstract
PURPOSE To demonstrate the effects of bilateral subthalamic deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) in the treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD) after 4-45 months' follow-up. METHOD Between 04/01 and 12/04, 46 PD patients were operated on with bilateral STN-DBS. All of them were evaluated with Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) parts II-V before surgery and 4-45 months after surgery. The amelioration of miscellaneous symptoms and decrease of medication dose, respectively, were compared. Main side effects were observed. FINDINGS After surgery, both the score of activities of daily living (ADL) and the UPDRS motor score decreased significantly (p < 0.001). Among the PD symptoms, tremor was improved best. Rigidity, bradykinesia, axial symptoms, facial expression and dyskinesia were all improved, although to a lesser extent, while speech was not improved. Medication dose was decreased significantly (p < 0.001). According to the time of follow-up, 4 groups were classified (4-12 months, 13-24 months. 25-36 months and 37-45 months group). ADL, UPDRS motor score and dyskinesia subscore improvement were compared among these groups. No significant difference existed. No life threatening complications occurred. Main side effects included hypophonia, dyskinesia, confusion, depression. CONCLUSIONS Bilateral STN-DBS is a satisfying surgical method for the treatment of advanced PD. It can improve the cardinal PD symptoms up to 45 months. Complications and side effects were rare and usually temporary or reversible.

Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to provide scientific basis for a unified standard reference value of haematocrit in young people in China. The reference values of haematocrit levels in healthy young people have been collected according to the Wintrobe methods; the relationship between the reference values of haematocrit in young people and altitude has been tested in this paper. It has been found that the reference value of haematocrit in young people increases when the altitude gradually increases, and such relationship is quite significant, The method of mathematical univariate regression analysis is used to deduce two regression equations: Y1 = 44.3 + 0.00357X +/- 3.7, and Y2 = 39.7+0.00318X +/- 2.6. If the altitude value of a s known, the particular area of China is known, the reference value of haematocrit in young people there can be calculated by means of the regression equations. Furhermore depending on the altitude, China can be divided into three districts: Qingzang District, Central District and Eastern District.

Abstract
The effects of binding of myristoylated ADP ribosylation factor 6 (myr-ARF6), an activator of phospholipase D (PLD), to a model membrane were investigated using an electron spin resonance (ESR) labeling technique. Initial studies were conducted in vesicles composed of 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl phosphatidylethanolamine, dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylinositol 4,5-biphosphate (PIP(2)), and cholesterol. Recombinant ARF6 binding significantly enhances defects in both the headgroup and acyl-chain regions of the membrane, which are revealed by the emergence of sharp components in the spectra from a headgroup label, 1,2-dipalmitoylphosphatidyl-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy-choline (DPPTC), and a chain label, 10PC, after myr-ARF6 binding. Binding of non-myristoylated ARF6 (non-ARF6) shows markedly reduced effects. Interestingly, no change in spectra from DPPTC was observed upon myr-ARF6 binding when PIP(2) in the vesicles was replaced by other negatively charged lipids, including phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylserine, and phosphatidylglycerol, even when normalized for charge. The production of the sharp peak appears to be a specific event, because another GTP binding protein, CDC42, which binds PIP(2) and activates PLD, fails to induce changes in vesicle structure. These results suggest a previously unappreciated role for ARF in mediating a protein/lipid interaction that produces defects in lipid bilayers. This function may serve as an initial event in destabilizing membrane structure for subsequent membrane fusion or biogenesis of vesicles.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To study the clinical possibility of detection of lung cancer micrometastasis in regional lymph nodes(LNs) by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR). METHODS The CK19 mRNA was used as marker. Serial dilution for lung cancer tissues was performed to demonstrate the sensitivity of the method. Each LN was bisected. One half was subjected to routine histological examination(HE), and the other half of all LNs which were pooled was subjected to CK19 RT-PCR. RESULTS The sensitivity of CK19RT-PCR method ranged from 1×10⁻⁶ to 1×10⁻⁴μg RNA of lung cancer tissue per 1μg RNA of normal LNs. Among 20 patients analyzed in this study, HE was done on each LN, which revealed LN metastasis in eight patients and these results were confirmed by CK19 RT-PCR. Of the other 12 patients who were diagnosed to be devoid of metastasis by HE, three patients were found to have micrometastasis in the regional LNs by RT-PCR. There was no significant difference between the detecting result of single LN and that of mixed LNs (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS Comparing with detecting single LN by RT-PCR, the sensitivity of RT-PCR for detection of micrometastasis in mixed LNs is remarkably higher than that of routine HE method. It can dramatically reduce the time and the cost of detection and can be applied clinically.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the effect of Shenfu injection (SFI) on function of diaphragmatic muscle in rabbits. METHODS Taking the transdiaphragmatic pressure (Pdi), diaphragmatic electromyogram (EMGdi) and diaphragmatic evoked potential (DEP) as criteria for observation, the diaphragmatic fatigue (DiF) was induced by stimulating bilateral phrenic nerve for 30 minutes. Pdi, EMGdi and DEP induced by stimulation with different frequency (Fc) were recorded before and after treatment. Then the high/low (H/L) frequency ratio and central Fc were calculated and analysed by variance analysis and q test. RESULTS After administration of 2 ml/kg of SFI, the Pdi, H/L, Fc and amplitude of DEP were markedly increased and latent phase of DEP was shortened by the drug, in comparing with those before treatment, P < 0.05. CONCLUSION SFI has the effect in antagonizing diaphragmatic fatigue.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To set up a molecular method(RT-PCR) which can be used to detect micrometastasis of regional lymph nodes (LNs) in patients with lung cancer. METHODS Primary lung cancer tissues ( n = 20) and regional LNs ( n = 159) were obtained from 20 patients with lung cancer who underwent lobectomy. Each LN was halved. One half of a LN was subjected to histological examination (HE) and the other half was subjected to RT-PCR amplification of CK19 mRNA. Serial dilution study using LC-5 cells was performed to detect sensitivity of the CK19 RT-PCR method. RESULTS Serial dilution study for LC-5 cells demonstrated that CK19 mRNA was detectable at a concentration as low as 10 LC-5 cells in 1 *10(7) LN cells. CK19 mRNA was found in 42 LNs that were proved to have metastasis by HE. Of the other 117 LNs which were diagnosed as no metastasis by HE , however , twenty five LNs were found to express CK19 mRNA by RT-PCR. CONCLUSIONS Comparing with HE method , the RT-PCR method can make more accurate assessment of metastatic status in LNs.

Abstract
The dynamic structure of detergent-resistant membranes (DRMs) isolated from RBL-2H3 cells was characterized using two different acyl chain spin-labeled phospholipids (5PC and 16PC), a headgroup labeled sphingomyelin (SM) analog (SD-Tempo) and a spin-labeled cholestane (CSL). It was shown, by comparison to dispersions of SM, dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC), and DPPC/cholesterol of molar ratio 1, that DRM contains a substantial amount of liquid ordered phase: 1) The rotational diffusion rates (R( perpendicular)) of 16PC in DRM between -5 degrees C and 45 degrees C are nearly the same as those in molar ratio DPPC/Chol = 1 dispersions, and they are substantially greater than R( perpendicular) in pure DPPC dispersions in the gel phase studied above 20 degrees C; 2) The order parameters (S) of 16PC in DRM at temperatures above 4 degrees C are comparable to those in DPPC/Chol = 1 dispersions, but are greater than those in DPPC dispersions in both the gel and liquid crystalline phases. 3) Similarly, R( perpendicular) for 5PC and CSL in DRM is greater than in pure SM dispersions in the gel phase, and S for these labels in DRM is greater than in the SM dispersions in both the gel and liquid crystalline phases. 4) R( perpendicular) of SD-Tempo in DRM is greater than in dispersions of SM in both gel and liquid phases, consistent with the liquid-like mobility in the acyl chain region in DRM. However, S of SD-Tempo in DRM is substantially less than that of this spin label in SM in gel and liquid crystalline phases (in absolute values), indicating that the headgroup region in DRMs is less ordered than in pure SM. These results support the hypothesis that plasma membranes contain DRM domains with a liquid ordered phase that may coexist with a liquid crystalline phase. There also appears to be a coexisting region in DRMs in which the chain labels 16PC and 5PC are found to cluster. We suggest that other biological membranes containing high concentrations of cholesterol also contain a liquid ordered phase.
