Abstract
Vacuum insulation on a large size negative ion accelerator with multiple extraction apertures and acceleration grids for fusion application was experimentally examined and designed. In the experiment, vacuum insulation characteristics were investigated in the JT-60 negative ion source with >1000 apertures on the grid with the surface area of ∼2 m(2). The sustainable voltages varied with a square root of the gap lengths between the grids, and decreased with number of the apertures and with the surface area of the grids. Based on the obtained results, the JT-60SA (super advanced) negative ion source is designed to produce 22 A, 500 keV D(-) ion beams for 100 s.

Abstract
Voltage holding test on MeV accelerator indicated that sustainable voltage was a half of that of ideal quasi-Rogowski electrode. It was suggested that the emission of the clumps is enhanced by a local electric field concentration, which leads to discharge initiation at lower voltage. To reduce the electric field concentration in the MeV accelerator, gaps between the grid supports were expanded and curvature radii at the support corners were increased. After the modifications, the accelerator succeeded in sustaining -1 MV in vacuum without beam acceleration. However, the beam energy was still limited at a level of 900 keV with a beam current density of 150 A∕m(2) (346 mA) where the 3 × 5 apertures were used. Measurement of the beam profile revealed that deflection of the H(-) ions was large and a part of the H(-) ions was intercepted at the acceleration grid. This causes high heat load on the grids and the breakdowns during beam acceleration. To suppress the direct interception, new grid system was designed with proper aperture displacement based on a 3D beam trajectory analysis. As the result, the beam deflection was compensated and the voltage holding during the beam acceleration was improved. Beam parameter of the MeV accelerator was increased to 980 keV, 185 A∕m(2) (427 mA), which is close to the requirement of ITER accelerator (1 MeV, 200 A∕m(2)).

Abstract
Spatially non-uniform electron energy distribution function (EEDF) in an arc driven negative ion source (JAEA 10A negative ion source: 10 A NIS) is calculated numerically by a three-dimensional Monte Carlo kinetic model for electrons to understand spatial distribution of plasma production (such as atomic and ionic hydrogen (H(0)∕H(+)) production) in source chamber. The local EEDFs were directly calculated from electron orbits including electromagnetic effects and elastic∕inelastic collision forces. From the EEDF, spatial distributions of H(0)∕H(+) production rate were obtained. The results suggest that spatial non-uniformity of H(0)∕H(+) productions is enhanced by high energy component of EEDF.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Asthma is a clinical syndrome characterized by variabilities in disease expression and severity. The pathophysiological mechanism underlying anti-asthma treatment resistance is also assumed to be different between disease phenotypes. OBJECTIVE To elucidate the effect of gender and atopic phenotype on the relationship between clinical factors and the risk of treatment resistance. METHODS We compared outpatients with difficult-to-treat asthma (DTA; n = 486) in a tertiary hospital for allergic diseases in central Japan with those with controlled severe asthma (n = 621) with respect to clinical factors including body mass index (BMI) and aspirin intolerance using multivariate logistic regression analysis stratified by gender and atopic phenotype. RESULTS When analysis was performed on the entire study populations, obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m(2); adjusted odds ratio (OR) 1.92; 95% confidence interval (95% CI: 1.07-3.43) and aspirin intolerance (OR: 2.56, 95% CI: 1.44-4.57) were found to be the significant risk factors for DTA. However, after the stratification by gender and atopic phenotype, the association between obesity and DTA was significant only in women (OR: 2.76, 95% CI: 1.31-5.78), but not in men (OR: 1.03, 95% CI: 0.38-2.81), and only in non-atopics (OR: 4.03, 95% CI: 1.15-14.08), but not in atopics (OR: 1.54, 95% CI: 0.79-3.02). The similar gender and phenotypic differences were also observed in the association between aspirin intolerance and DTA: namely, the association was significant only in women (OR: 3.96, 95% CI: 1.84-8.50), but not in men (OR: 1.19, 95% CI: 0.46-3.05); and only in non-atopics (OR: 5.49, 95% CI: 1.98-15.19), but not in atopics (OR: 1.39, 95% CI: 0.65-2.98). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Significant associations of obesity and aspirin intolerance with DTA were observed only in women and in non-atopics. These findings suggest that a phenotype-specific approach is needed to treat patients with DTA.

Abstract
Chemical toxicity of cryoprotectants to in vitro developmental competence of porcine oocytes was examined. In vitro-matured oocytes were exposed to 40 percent ethylene glycol (EG), glycerol (GLY), or 1,2-propanediol (PD), fertilized with spermatozoa, and cultured for 8 days. Compared to treatment with other cryoprotectants, exposure to EG resulted in the development of significantly more blastocysts, but the rate was significantly lower than that of non-exposed control oocytes. In vitro-matured oocytes were also equilibrated in 40 percent EG by 3 multi-step methods, after which their developmental competence was evaluated. The rate of blastocyst development was higher in the 4-step method than in the 2- and 3-step methods of equilibrium. These results indicate that cryoprotectants and equilibration methods affect the developmental competence of porcine oocytes and that EG may be a superior cryoprotectant for vitrification of these cells.

Urinary concentrations of 15-epimer of lipoxin A(4) are lower in patients with aspirin-intolerant compared with aspirin-tolerant asthma. Clin Exp Allergy 2011; 41:1711-8. Abstract
BACKGROUND Although an abnormality in arachidonic acid metabolism may be responsible for aspirin-intolerant asthma (AIA), there is little knowledge about the concentrations of urinary lipoxin A(4) (LXA(4)) and the 15-epimer of LXA(4) (15-epi-LXA(4)) in relation to asthma severity in AIA subjects. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study is to estimate urinary LXA(4) and the 15-epimer concentrations to investigate lipoxins in AIA. METHODS In this study, we examined AIA, aspirin-tolerant asthma (ATA) and healthy control groups. The AIA and ATA groups were subdivided into the severe asthma and non-severe asthma subgroups. Urinary LXA(4), 15-epi-LXA(4) and leukotriene E(4) (LTE(4) ) were quantified using enzyme immunoassay after separating these compounds using high-performance liquid chromatography. RESULTS The urinary LXA(4) concentration was significantly lower than the 15-epi-LXA(4) concentration in the asthmatic subjects. The AIA group showed significantly lower urinary 15-epi-LXA(4) (P < 0.01) and higher urinary LTE(4) concentrations (P < 0.05) than the ATA group. Comparison of 15-epi-LXA(4) concentrations between the severe asthmatic and non-severe asthmatic subjects in the AIA and ATA groups revealed that the decreased 15-epi-LXA(4) concentration may be related to aspirin intolerance, but not asthma severity. Receiver operator characteristic curves demonstrated that the concentration ratio of LTE(4) to 15-epi-LXA(4) was superior to 15-epi-LXA(4) concentration and LTE(4) concentration as a predictive factor for aspirin intolerance. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE We have demonstrated for the first time that urinary 15-epi-LXA(4) concentration is significantly higher than LXA(4) concentration in both the AIA and ATA groups. 15-Epi-LXA(4) concentration was significantly lower in the AIA group with an increased urinary LTE(4) concentration than in the ATA group. An imbalance between proinflammatory cysteinyl-leukotrienes and anti-inflammatory 15-epi-LXA(4) may be involved in AIA pathogenesis.

Abstract
We have performed scanning tunneling microscopy and differential tunneling conductance (dI/dV) mapping for the surface of the three-dimensional topological insulator Bi(2)Se(3). The fast Fourier transformation applied to the dI/dV image shows an electron interference pattern near Dirac node despite the general belief that the backscattering is well suppressed in the bulk energy gap region. The comparison of the present experimental result with theoretical surface and bulk band structures shows that the electron interference occurs through the scattering between the surface states near the Dirac node and the bulk continuum states.

Abstract
With the improved survival rate of patients with retinoblastoma, the incidence of second malignancies has become substantial. We had two retinoblastoma survivors with secondary malignancies in the naso-ethmoidal complex, one a 21-year-old man with anaplastic carcinoma and the other a 16-year-old girl with malignant fibrous histiocytoma. They underwent repeated craniofacial surgery. Secondary malignancies arising at the nose and ethmoidal cells often invade the anterior skull base. The introduction of skull base surgery has provided wider surgical margins and increased the resultant likelihood of cure. Both patients have so far shown no evidence of recurrence.

Abstract
There has been increasing interest in phenomena emerging from relativistic electrons in a solid, which have a potential impact on spintronics and magnetoelectrics. One example is the Rashba effect, which lifts the electron-spin degeneracy as a consequence of spin-orbit interaction under broken inversion symmetry. A high-energy-scale Rashba spin splitting is highly desirable for enhancing the coupling between electron spins and electricity relevant for spintronic functions. Here we describe the finding of a huge spin-orbit interaction effect in a polar semiconductor composed of heavy elements, BiTeI, where the bulk carriers are ruled by large Rashba-like spin splitting. The band splitting and its spin polarization obtained by spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy are well in accord with relativistic first-principles calculations, confirming that the spin splitting is indeed derived from bulk atomic configurations. Together with the feasibility of carrier-doping control, the giant-Rashba semiconductor BiTeI possesses excellent potential for application to various spin-dependent electronic functions.

Abstract
Alpha-carba-GalCer (RCAI-56), a novel synthetic analogue of α-galactosylceramide (α-GalCer), stimulates invariant natural killer T (NK T) cells to produce interferon (IFN)-γ. IFN-γ exhibits immunoregulatory properties in autoimmune diseases by suppressing T helper (Th)-17 cell differentiation and inducing regulatory T cells and apoptosis of autoreactive T cells. Here, we investigated the protective effects of α-carba-GalCer on collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) in mice. First, we confirmed that α-carba-GalCer selectively induced IFN-γ in CIA-susceptible DBA/1 mice in vivo. Then, DBA/1 mice were immunized with bovine type II collagen (CII) and α-carba-GalCer. The incidence and clinical score of CIA were significantly lower in α-carba-GalCer-treated mice. Anti-IFN-γ antibodies abolished the beneficial effects of α-carba-GalCer, suggesting that α-carba-GalCer ameliorated CIA in an IFN-γ-dependent manner. Treatment with α-carba-GalCer reduced anti-CII antibody production [immunoglobulin (Ig)G and IgG2a] and CII-reactive interleukin (IL)-17 production by draining lymph node (DLN) cells, did not induce apoptosis or regulatory T cells, and significantly increased the ratio of the percentage of IFN-γ-producing T cells to IL-17-producing T cells (Th1/Th17 ratio). Moreover, the gene expression levels of IL-6 and IL-23p19, Th17-related cytokines, were reduced significantly in mice treated with α-carba-GalCer. In addition, we observed higher IFN-γ production by NK T cells in α-carba-GalCer-treated mice in the initial phase of CIA. These findings indicate that α-carba-GalCer polarizes the T cell response toward Th1 and suppresses Th17 differentiation or activation, suggesting that α-carba-GalCer, a novel NK T cell ligand, can potentially provide protection against Th17-mediated autoimmune arthritis by enhancing the Th1 response.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of an endoscopic approach to the parapharyngeal space through a transnasal route. For this purpose, an anatomic study was conducted. MATERIAL AND METHODS The target area was studied separately on each side in 4 adult cadaver heads. To simulate actual endoscopic surgery, the dissection was performed thoroughly under the rigid endoscope. The surgical steps and extent of surrounding tissue resection necessary for the approach were evaluated. RESULTS Both the pre- and poststyloid compartments could be exposed with restricted sacrifice of the surrounding tissue around the pterygoid process. Adding a wide sphenoidotomy and subpetrous bone resection, the surgical exposure could be extended at the medial temporal skull base including the medial infratemporal fossa. CONCLUSION Although its usefulness has to be further verified in the clinical setting, the present results of the anatomic dissection indicate the potential of the approach to become a novel technique for treatment of a lesion in the parapharyngeal space.

Abstract
We have determined the electron-coupling spectrum of superconducting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+δ) from high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectra by two deconvolution-free robust methods. As hole concentration decreases, the coupling spectral weight at low energies ≲15 meV shows a twofold and nearly band-independent enhancement, while that around ∼65 meV increases moderately, and that in ≳130 meV decreases leading to a crossover of dominant coupling excitation between them. Our results suggest the competition among multiple screening effects, and provide important clues to the source of sufficiently strong low-energy coupling, λ(LE)≈1, in an underdoped system.

Abstract
Using polarization- and hν-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we uncovered the fine details of a quasiparticle's dynamics of a typical multiband superconductor, Sr2RuO4. We found strong hybridization between the in-plane and out-of-plane quasiparticles via the Coulomb and spin-orbit interactions. This effect enhances the quasiparticle mass due to the inflow of out-of-plane quasiparticles into the two-dimensional Fermi surface sheet, where the quasiparticles are further subjected to the multiple electron-boson interactions. We suggest that the spin-triplet p-wave superconductivity of Sr2RuO4 is phonon mediated.

Abstract
This study aims to introduce thoron ((220)Rn), a naturally occurring isotope, as a new groundwater tracer for detecting groundwater seepage into Bangkok canals. Previous studies by the group using radioactive radon ((222)Rn) and conductivity as groundwater tracers suggested that there is shallow groundwater seeping into the man-made canals ('klongs') around Bangkok. Furthermore, the groundwater was shown to be an important pathway of nutrient contamination to the surface waters. Thoron is a member of the natural (232)Th decay chain, has exactly the same chemical properties as radon, but has a much shorter half-life (56 s) than radon (3.84 d). By using its advantage of rapid decay, if one detects thoron in the environment, there must be a source nearby. Thus, thoron is potentially an excellent prospecting tool. In the case of measurements in natural waters, sources of thoron should indicate the point of groundwater discharges more precisely than radon. During the surveys in the canals of Bangkok, thoron was successfully measured and its distribution was more variable than that of radon, suggesting that seepage into the canals is not uniform.

Abstract
We report the first observation of a topological surface state on the (111) surface of the ternary chalcogenide TlBiSe₂ by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. By tuning the synchrotron radiation energy we reveal that it features an almost ideal Dirac cone with the Dirac point well isolated from bulk continuum states. This suggests that TlBiSe₂ is a promising material for realizing quantum topological transport.

Abstract
The electronic structure of NaFeAs is studied with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on high quality single crystals. Large portions of the band structure start to shift around the structural transition temperature and smoothly evolve as the temperature lowers through the spin density wave transition. Moreover, band folding due to magnetic order emerges slightly above the structural transition. Our observation provides direct evidence that the structural and magnetic transitions share the same origin and could both be driven by the electronic structure reconstruction in Fe-based superconductors instead of Fermi surface nesting. We did not observe any sign of a gap in the superconducting state, which is likely related to weakened superconductivity in the presence of the spin density wave.

Abstract
The three-dimensional band structure and superconducting gap of Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 are studied with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. In contrast with previous results, we have identified three holelike Fermi surface sheets near the zone center with sizable out-of-plane or kz dispersion. The superconducting gap on certain Fermi surface sheets shows significant kz dependence. Moreover, the superconducting gap sizes are different at the same Fermi momentum for two bands with different spatial symmetries (one odd, one even). Our results further reveal the three-dimensional and orbital-dependent structure of the superconducting gap in iron pnictides, which facilitates the understanding of momentum-integrated measurements and provides a distinct test for theories.

Abstract
A hexagonal deformation of the Fermi surface of Bi2Se3 has been for the first time observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. This is in contrast to the general belief that Bi2Se3 possesses an ideal Dirac cone. The hexagonal shape is found to disappear near the Dirac node, which would protect the surface state electrons from backscattering. It is also demonstrated that the Fermi energy of naturally electron-doped Bi2Se3 can be tuned by 1% Mg doping in order to realize the quantum topological transport.

Abstract
Strong spin polarization of the photocurrent from bulk continuum states of Bi(111) is experimentally observed. On the basis of ab initio one-step photoemission theory the effect is shown to originate from the strong polarization of the initial states at the surface and to be the result of the surface sensitivity of photoemission. Final state effects cause deviations of the k{∥} dependence of polarization from strictly antisymmetric relative to Γ.

Abstract
A 32-year-old primipara, who had been diagnosed as schizophrenia for a year and with good control of the disease by olanzapine administration, requested epidural labor analgesia. Olanzapine is an atypical antipsychotic, and is contraindicated to use with epinephrine, because the a receptor antagonistic action of olanzapine decreases the blood pressure in combination with epinephrine. Hypotention is one of the major complications during the labor epidural analgesia. In addition, this patient is at high risk of hypotension under antipsycotic medication. As hypotension leads to placental-fetal circulation insufficiency, extreme attention to prevent hypotension and to preserve uteroplacental blood flow should be paid. Olanzapine was discontinued before two days of the induction. Sufficient hydration with crystalloid was given beforehand to avoid hypotention. Both phenylephrine and norepinephrine were ready for an anticipated hypotention. Oxytocin infusion began after an epidural catheter was placed at L2-3 intervertebral space. She delivered a healthy baby under good pain control. Apgar score of the baby was 9 and 9 at 1 and 5 minutes after birth, respectively. Total volume of infusion was 2000 ml. No mental disturbance was observed during the labor and delivery. The patient and her baby were discharged on the 4th day postpartum.

Abstract
Aversive olfactory learning was established in young rats after odor exposure paired with foot shock through a classical conditioning paradigm. Using behavioral pharmacology and Western blotting, we previously reported that plasticity in the main olfactory bulb (MOB) underlies aversive olfactory learning. Since long-term potentiation (LTP) observed in the hippocampus is believed to be a cellular substrate for aspects of memory, we attempted to induce LTP in the MOB. Using brain slices containing the MOB, we found that five tetani of the lateral olfactory tract evoked LTP that was blocked by the N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist AP5. Although three tetani induced no significant changes in control slices, with noradrenaline (NA) application they produced clear LTP (NA-mediated LTP), which was not dependent on NMDA receptors. NA's facilitating effect on LTP induction was blocked by the beta-adrenoceptor antagonist timolol but not by the alpha-adrenoceptor antagonist phentolamine, and was mimicked by the beta-adrenoceptor agonist isoproterenol. The l-type calcium channel blocker nifedipine completely blocked LTP as well as NA-mediated LTP. In addition, we found that aversive olfactory learning was impaired by beta-adrenoceptor antagonist, timolol but not by alpha-adrenoceptor antagonist, phentolamine, and only odor training established olfactory learning by isoproterenol infusion. Moreover, we found that nifedipine but not AP5 prevented olfactory learning formation. These common properties provided evidence for neural correlates between NA-mediated LTP aversive olfactory learning in young rats.

Abstract
We report the first observation of the multilayer band splitting in the optimally doped trilayer cuprate Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O(10+δ) (Bi2223) by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The observed energy bands and Fermi surfaces are originated from the outer and inner CuO2 planes (OP and IP). The OP band is overdoped with a large d-wave gap around the node of Δ0∼43 meV while the IP is underdoped with an even large gap of Δ0∼60 meV. These energy gaps are much larger than those for the same doping level of the double-layer cuprates, which leads to the large Tc in Bi2223. We propose possible origins of the large superconducting gaps for the OP and IP: (1) minimal influence of out-of-plane disorder and a proximity effect and (2) interlayer tunneling of Cooper pairs between the OP and IP.

Abstract
In the heavily-electron-doped regime of the Ba(Fe,Co)2As2 superconductor, three hole bands at the zone center are observed and two of them reach the Fermi level. The larger hole pocket at the zone center is apparently nested with the smaller electron pocket around the zone corner. However, the (pi,0) Fermi surface reconstruction reported for the hole-doped case is absent in the heavily-electron-doped case. This observation shows that the apparent Fermi surface nesting alone is not enough to enhance the antiferromagnetic correlation as well as the superconducting transition temperature.

Abstract
We have revealed the underlying mechanism of the martensitic phase transition (MPT) in a new class of ferromagnetic shape memory alloys, Ni2Mn1+xSn1-x, by the combination of bulk-sensitive hard-x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and a first-principles density-functional calculation. The Ni 3d e{g} state in the cubic phase systematically shifts towards the Fermi energy with an increase in the number of Mn atoms substituted in the Sn sites. An abrupt decrease of the intensity of the Ni 3d e{g} states upon MPT for x=0.36-0.42 has been observed in the vicinity of the Fermi level. The energy shift of the Ni 3d minority-spin e{g} state in the cubic phase originates from hybridization with the antiferromagnetically coupled Mn in the Sn site. Below the MPT temperature, the Ni 3d state splits into two levels located below and above the Fermi energy in order to achieve an energetically stable state.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The basal ganglia (BG) play an important role in controlling saccades. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) is widely used as a treatment of Parkinson disease (PD) by altering the function of the BG. Nevertheless, the effects of STN DBS on saccade performance are not fully clarified in a systematic manner. In this study, we examined the effects of bilateral STN DBS on both the initiation and inhibition of saccades in PD. METHODS Thirty-two patients with PD performed 4 oculomotor tasks. Two tasks (visually guided saccades and gap saccades) were reflexive and 2 (memory-guided saccades [MGS] and antisaccades) were volitional. While taking their regular doses of antiparkinsonian drugs, patients performed these tasks under 2 conditions: during DBS (DBS-on condition) and without DBS (DBS-off condition). Fifty-one age-matched subjects served as controls. RESULTS In the DBS-on condition, parameters of saccade initiation were improved in all tasks, with shorter latencies and increased amplitudes, except for MGS latency. STN DBS improved the ability to suppress unwanted saccades to the cue stimulus in the MGS task. However, it did not suppress prosaccades during the antisaccade task. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) affects the neural pathway common to both reflexive and volitional saccades, possibly by acting on the STN-substantia nigra pars reticulata-superior colliculi pathway. STN DBS may set the functional level of the superior colliculi appropriate for both saccade initiation and inhibition through this pathway. These findings provide novel insights into the pathophysiology of Parkinson disease and may yield better treatment strategies.

Abstract
The incidence of intracranial hemorrhage is approximately 1-5 in 10,000 pregnancies. In Japan, it is reported that 184 such cases occurred and 10 of them died in 2006. Neurosurgery during pregnancy is required infrequently however a multidisciplinary approach is mandated and anesthesiologists need to modify neuroanesthetic and obstetric practices to accommodate the safety requirements of the mother and fetus. Following the physiologic changes of pregnancy and fetal considerations in nonobstetric surgery during pregnancy, we present the maternal and fetal considerations in anesthesia for intracranial hemorrhage.

Abstract
In JAEA, research and developments to realize high power accelerator (1 MeV, 40 AD(-) ion beams for 3600 s) for ITER have been carried out experimentally and numerically utilizing a five stage MAMuG (Multiaperture, Multigrid) accelerator. In this paper, the extension of the gap length, which is required to improve the voltage holding capability, is examined in two dimensional beam optics analyses and also from view point of stripping loss of ions. In order to suppress excess power loadings due to the direct interception of negative ions, which is issued in long pulse tests, the beamlet deflection is analyzed in three dimensional multibeamlet analyses. The necessary modifications shown above are applied to the MAMuG accelerator for coming long pulse tests in JAEA and ITER.

Abstract
Heat load on acceleration grids by secondary particles such as electrons, neutrals, and positive ions, is a key issue for long pulse acceleration of negative ion beams. Complicated behaviors of the secondary particles in multiaperture, multigrid (MAMuG) accelerator have been analyzed using electrostatic accelerator Monte Carlo code. The analytical result is compared to experimental one obtained in a long pulse operation of a MeV accelerator, of which second acceleration grid (A2G) was removed for simplification of structure. The analytical results show that relatively high heat load on the third acceleration grid (A3G) since stripped electrons were deposited mainly on A3G. This heat load on the A3G can be suppressed by installing the A2G. Thus, capability of MAMuG accelerator is demonstrated for suppression of heat load due to secondary particles by the intermediate grids.

Abstract
Developments of the large negative ion source have been progressed in the high-energy, high-power, and long-pulse neutral beam injector for JT-60 Super Advanced. Countermeasures have been studied and tested for critical issues of grid heat load and voltage holding capability. As for the heat load of the acceleration grids, direct interception of D- ions was reduced by adjusting the beamlet steering. As a result, the heat load was reduced below an allowable level for long-pulse injections. As for the voltage holding capability, local electric field was mitigated by tuning gap lengths between large-area acceleration grids in the accelerator. As a result, the voltage holding capability was improved up to the rated value of 500 kV. To investigate the voltage holding capability during beam acceleration, the beam acceleration test is ongoing with new extended gap.

Abstract
A multiaperture multigrid accelerator called "MeV accelerator" has been developed for neutral beam injection system of international thermonuclear experimental reactor. In the present work, long pulse H(-) ion beam acceleration was performed by the MeV accelerator equipped with new water-cooled grids. At present, the pulse length was extended to 5 s for the beams of 750 keV, 221 mA, and 10 s for the beams of 600 keV, 158 mA. Energy density, defined as products of beam energy (keV), current (mA), and pulse (s) divided by aperture area (m(2)), increased more than one order of magnitude higher compared with original MeV accelerator without water cooling in its grids. At higher energy and current, the grid was melted by beam deflection. Due to this grid melting, breakdowns occurred between the grids, and hence, the pulse length was limited. Beam deflection will be compensated by aperture displacement in next experiment.

Abstract
Voltage holding capability of JT-60 negative ion source that has a large electrostatic negative ion accelerator with 45 cm x 1.1 m acceleration grids was experimentally examined and improved to realize 500 keV, 22 A, and 100 s D- ion beams for JT-60 Super Advanced. The gap lengths in the acceleration stages were extended to reduce electric fields in a gap between the large grids and at the corner of the support flanges from the original 4-5 to 3-4 kV/mm. As a result, the voltage holding capability without beam acceleration has been successfully improved from 400 to 500 kV. The pulse duration to hold 500 kV reached 40 s of the power supply limitation.

Abstract
In the livestock industry, meat color has become important because consumer acceptance is subject to the appearance of the product in the marketplace. Our previous analyses of a whole genome QTL scan for various meat qualities using 2 F(2) families from Japanese wild boar (known as a red meat) x Large White and from Duroc x Chinese Jinhua suggested that a meat color (heme content) QTL is located on SSC6. The objective of this study was to fine-map this SSC6 meat color QTL and subsequently investigate positional candidate genes for polymorphisms that may cause changes in meat color. Therefore, we conducted interval mapping on SSC6 using an additional 9 gene markers through combined analyses of the 2 F(2) families of Japanese wild boar x Large White (353 progeny) and Duroc x Chinese Jinhua (204 progeny). Comparative analysis with humans, mice, and cattle suggested that there were 10 functional genes in the region. Among these genes, we suggested that a novel pig gene encoding a nudix (nucleoside diphosphate linked moiety X)-type motif 7 (NUDT7, a member of the nudix hydrolases) is a strong candidate for the QTL because the mouse Nudt7 is reported to hydrolyze succinyl-CoA, a substrate of the reaction limiting the rate of heme biosynthesis. We therefore determined the pig NUDT7 gene sequence including the 5' promoter region and explored genetic polymorphisms between Japanese wild boar and Large White. We identified 116 polymorphisms within the NUDT7 CDS or in the 5' region. None of the AA substitutions were associated with the meat color QTL; however, 3 polymorphisms were found in putative transcription factor recognition sites. We then investigated the differential expression of NUDT7 in Japanese wild boar and Large White by allele-specific quantitative real-time PCR. The expression level of the Large White type allele was greater than that of the Japanese wild-boar-type allele. Consequently, we speculated that the difference in meat color between Japanese wild boar and Large White is caused partly by differential expression of this candidate gene. Upregulation of NUDT7 expression in muscle may reduce succinyl-CoA content and thus reduce the level of heme biosynthesis.

Abstract
Blockade of CD40-CD154 signaling pathway is an attractive strategy to induce potent immunosuppression and tolerance in organ transplantation. Due to its strong immunosuppressive effect shown in nonhuman primate experiments, anti-CD154 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) have been tried in clinical settings, but it was interrupted by unexpected thromboembolic complications. Thus, inhibition of the counter molecule, CD40, has remained an alternative approach. In the previous preliminary study, we have shown that 4D11, a novel fully human anti-CD40 mAb, has a fairly potent immunosuppressive effect on kidney allograft in nonhuman primates. In this study, we aimed to confirm the efficacy and untoward events of the 2-week induction and 180-day maintenance 4D11 treatments. In both, 4D11 significantly suppressed T-cell-mediated alloimmune responses and prolonged allograft survival. Addition of weekly 4D11 administration after the induction treatment further enhanced graft survival. Complete inhibition of both donor-specific Ab and anti-4D11 Ab productions was obtained only with higher-dose maintenance therapy. No serious side effect including thromboembolic complications was noted except for a transient reduction of hematocrit in one animal, and decrease of peripheral B-cell counts in all. These results indicate that the 4D11 appears to be a promising candidate for immunosuppression in clinical organ transplantation.

Abstract
Low energy ultrahigh momentum resolution angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy study on four-layer self-doped high Tc superconductor Ba2Ca3Cu4O8F2 (F0234) revealed fine structure in the band dispersion, identifying the unconventional association of hole and electron doping with the inner and outer CuO2 layers, respectively. For the states originating from two inequivalent CuO2 layers, different energy scales are observed in dispersion kinks associated with the collective mode coupling, with the larger energy scale found in the electron (n-) doped state which also has stronger coupling strength. Given the earlier finding that the superconducting gap is substantially larger along the n-type Fermi surface, our observations connect the mode coupling energy and strength with magnitude of the pairing gap.

Abstract
We report on a photoemission study of Ta2NiSe5 that has a quasi-one-dimensional structure and an insulating ground state. Ni 2p core-level spectra show that the Ni 3d subshell is partially occupied and the Ni 3d states are heavily hybridized with the Se 4p states. In angle-resolved photoemission spectra, the valence-band top is found to be extremely flat, indicating that the ground state can be viewed as an excitonic insulator state between the Ni 3d-Se 4p hole and the Ta 5d electron. We argue that the high atomic polarizability of Se plays an important role to stabilize the excitonic state.

Effect of dietary forage to concentrate ratio on volatile fatty acid absorption and the expression of genes related to volatile fatty acid absorption and metabolism in ruminal tissue. Abstract
The objective of the study was to investigate the fractional rate of volatile fatty acid (VFA) absorption and the expression of genes encoding for transporters and enzymes involved in the absorption and metabolism of VFA in ruminal tissue when cattle were fed high or low concentrate diets. Twelve ruminally cannulated Holstein cows were used in a randomized complete block design. The low concentrate (LC) and high concentrate (HC) diets contained 8 and 64% dietary concentrate (dry matter basis), respectively. Cows were fed their respective diet for at least 28 d, following which data and samples were collected over 6 d. Ruminal pH was measured continuously for 72 h, and the in vivo VFA absorption and passage rates were measured using Co-EDTA and n-valeric acid as markers. Ruminal tissue was collected postslaughter from the ventral sac of the rumen, and gene expression was evaluated using quantitative real-time PCR. Dry matter intake was not affected by treatment, averaging 14.9 kg/d, but cows fed HC had lower mean ruminal pH (6.03 vs. 6.48), and a greater duration (376 vs. 10 min/d) that ruminal pH was <5.8. Ruminal VFA concentration was 24 mM higher for cows fed HC compared with LC; however, the fractional rate of VFA absorption and passage from the rumen was not affected by dietary treatment, averaging 23.4 and 9.6%/h, respectively. The expression of genes encoding for enzymes involved in VFA activation and ketogenesis were not affected by treatment. Cows fed HC tended to have a relative abundance of pyruvate dehydrogenase lipoamide alpha 1 mRNA transcripts that was 1.4 times lower than that of cows fed LC, but other enzymes involved in pyruvate metabolism or regulation of the citric acid cycle were not affected. Collectively, these results suggest that the dietary forage to concentrate ratio does not affect the fractional rate of VFA absorption in vivo, but potentially alters energy metabolism in ruminal tissue.
