Abstract
1-(6-Hydroxy-2-isopropenyl-1-benzofuran-5-yl)-1-ethanone (1), isolated from the roots of Petasites hybridus L., and a series of synthetic benzoxazepine derivatives of compound 1 (2-6) were evaluated for their immunomodulatory effects. The compounds were evaluated for their effects on the respiratory burst of human whole blood and isolated human polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) using luminol- and lucigenin-based chemiluminescence (CL) assays, and their effect on chemotactic migration of PMNs was assessed using the Boyden chamber technique. Compound 1 exhibited stronger inhibition than acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) on luminol-enhanced CL of PMNs. It also inhibited PMN chemotaxis with an IC50 value comparable to that of ibuprofen. Of the compounds tested, 5 was the most effective in inhibiting luminol-enhanced CL and also strongly inhibited lucigenin-enhanced CL with IC50 values lower than that of ASA. Compound 2 was the most active in inhibiting migration of PMNs and was five times stronger than ibuprofen. The results suggest that compound 1 and its synthesized benzoxazepine derivatives, especially compounds 2 and 5, were able to modulate the innate immune response of phagocytes at different steps, emphasizing their potential as leads for the development of new immunomodulatory agents.

Abstract
A carbon paste electrode modified with p-chloranil and carbon nanotubes was used for the sensitive and selective voltammetric determination of hydroxylamine (HX) and phenol (PL). The oxidation of HX at the modified electrode was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperommetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The values of the catalytic rate constant (k), and diffusion coefficient (D) for HX were calculated. Square wave voltammetric peaks current of HX and PL increased linearly with their concentrations at the ranges of 0.1-172.0 and 5.0-512.0 μmol L(-1), respectively. The detection limits for HX and PL were 0.08 and 2.0 μmol L(-1), respectively. The separation of the anodic peak potentials of HX and PL reached to 0.65 V, using square wave voltammetry. The proposed sensor was successfully applied for the determination of HX and PL in water and wastewater samples.

Abstract
In this work, a simple and high sensitivity electrochemical sensor was developed to determine Sudan I based on Pt/CNTs nanocomposite ionic liquid modified carbon paste electrode (Pt/CNTs/ILCPE) using cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and square wave voltammetry (SWV) methods. The novel sensor exhibited an obviously catalytic activity towards the oxidation of Sudan I, which can be confirmed by the increased oxidation peak current and the decreased oxidation peak potential when compared with the bare carbon paste electrode (CPE). The electron transfer coefficient (α), diffusion coefficient (D), and charge transfer resistance (Rct) of Sudan I at the modified electrode were calculated. The linear response range and detection limit were found to be 0.008-600 μmol L(-1) and 0.003 μmol L(-1), respectively. Other species did not interfere with the determination of Sudan I at a surface of propose sensor in the optimum condition. The proposed sensor was successfully applied for the determination of Sudan I in food samples with satisfactory results.

Abstract
A new linderone A, namely 2-cinnamoyl-3-hydroxy-4, 5-dimethoxycyclopenta-2, 4-dienone (5), together with three known flavonoids (1-3) and one linderone (4), were isolated from the bark of Lindera oxyphylla. Extensive spectroscopic analysis including 1D and 2D-NMR spectra determined their sturctures. In addition, the antioxidant activity of all the compounds has been determined using 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging (DPPH), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and ferrous ion chelating (FIC) methods. Compound 3 showed excellent DPPH scavenging activity with IC50% value of 8.5 ± 0.004% (μg/mL) which is comparable with vitamin C. This compound, also showed an absorbance value of 1.00 ± 0.06% through FRAP test when compared with Butyl Hydroxy Aniline (BHA). However, FIC showed low activity for all the isolated compounds (chelating activity less than 50%) in comparison with ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA). Anticancer activity for all compounds has also been measured on A375 human melanoma, HT-29 colon adenocarcinoma, MCF-7 human breast adenocarcinoma cells, WRL-68 normal hepatic cells, A549 non-small cell lung cancer cells and PC-3 prostate adenocarcinoma cell line. Compound 1 showed A549=65.03%, PC-3=30.12%, MCF-7=47.67, compound 2 showed PC-3=90.13%, compound 3 showed MCF-7=79.57 and for compound 5 MCF-7 is 96.33.

Abstract
Three-component reaction of 1-(6-hydroxy-2-isopropenyl-1-benzofuran-yl)-1-ethanone, dialkyl acetylenedicarboxylates and isocyanides in water was described as efficient and green synthetic procedure for preparation of 9Hfuro[ 2,3-f]chromene-8,9-dicarboxylates in excellent yield. In these reactions, 1-(6-hydroxy-2-isopropenyl-1-benzofuranyl)- 1-ethanone was extracted from rhizomes of Petasites hybridus from northern Iran. The structure of this compound was determined by 1H, 13C-NMR and IR spectroscopy and confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. This procedure provides rapid access to novel and diversely substituted 9H-furo[2,3-f]chromene-8,9-dicarboxylate derivatives.

Abstract
A series of 6H-thiopyran-2,3-dicarboxylate derivatives 4a-d were synthesized and evaluated for their cytotoxic effect against HCT-15 colon and MCF-7 breast cancer cell lines using Sulforhodamine B (SRB) assay. The results showed that these compounds could exhibit a good cytotoxicity to both cell lines. In addition, these compounds were found to exhibit significant DNA-binding affinity. Ultraviolet-visible light (UV-Vis) spectroscopy was conducted to determine the ability of the ligand under analysis. The effect of ligand complexation on DNA structure led to overall affinity constants of K(4a)=3.5×10(4) M(-1), K(4b)=6.4×10(4) M(-1), K(4c)=3.2×10(4) M(-1), and K(4d)=2.4×10(4) M(-1). Our findings could provide new evidence showing the relationship between the chemical structure and biological activity and may be useful for the discovery of new anti-cancer drugs.

Abstract
The catalytic activity of highly thermal stable, hydrophobic, and complete heterogeneous propylsulfonic acid functionalized nanostructured SBA-15 for excellent acetylation of alcohols and phenols with acetic anhydride at ambient temperature in solvent-free conditions was examined under environmentally benign reaction conditions. The salient features of this protocol are the absence of solvent, a green experimental procedure, and simple reusability of the catalyst (at least five reaction cycles).

Abstract
An efficient synthesis of dialkyl pyrrolo[2,1-a]isoquinoline-2,3-dicarboxylates, pyrrolo[1,2-a]quinoline-1,2- dicarboxylates and indolizines is described via one-pot reactions of isoquinoline, quinoline or pyridine and phenacyl bromids with dialkyl acetylenedicarboxylates or diaryloylacetylene under solvent-free conditions at 50°C. The mild reaction conditions and high yields of the products exhibit the good synthetic advantage of these methods.

Abstract
A naphthalene-fused (α-alkoxycarbonyl)methylene-γ-butyrolactone (methyl 2-[7-hydroxy-2-oxonaphtho[1,2-b]furan-3(2H)-yliden]acetate) has been prepared as a representative compound of a potential class of cytotoxic agents. In vitro cytotoxicity has been evaluated against HCT-15 colon and MCF-7 breast cancer cells and IC(50) was 64-66 μM, causing morphological changes in cells, such as loss of adhesion, rounding, cell shrinkage, and detachment from the substratum. The binding constant K of the complex between the naphthyl lactone with bovine serum albumin (8 × 10(3) M(-1)) suggests a minor change in protein folding. The K of the binding with DNA (1.06 × 10(4) M(-1)) suggests nonspecific electrostatic interactions with DNA and this was confirmed by melting point data (Tm<0.6 °C). Therefore, naphthalene-fused (α-alkoxycarbonyl)methylene-γ-butyrolactone should not be able to intercalate with DNA but its interaction should occur at the level of DNA surface.

Abstract
Dimethyl-5-acetyl-4-methyl-6-(4-methylphenylimino)-6H-thiopyran-2,3-dicarboxylate (4) has been synthesized and its antiproliferative activity is reported here. Compound 4 inhibited the growth of human colon cancer cell line HCT-15 with an IC(50) value of 3.5 μM and of breast cancer cell line MCF-7 with an IC(50) value of 1.5 μM in a dose/time-dependent manner using a sulforhodamine B assay. Moreover, suppression of clonogenic activity occurred after exposure to 4 at a concentration of 4 μM for HCT-15 and 1.7 μM for MCF-7. The results also showed tumor cell invasion through matrigel and cell adhesion. The effect of ligand complexation on DNA structure led to overall affinity constant of K(4-DNA)=9.8×10(4) M(-1).
