Abstract
OBJECTIVES To estimate the annual prevalence of different diagnostic categories by age, breed and sex in insured cats in Japan for which veterinary care claims had been made, and to identify if there is a pattern in these host factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS Data from 48,187 cats insured for veterinary care in Japan in the period from April 2012 to March 2013 comprising 26,003 males and 22,184 females were analysed to calculate the annual prevalence of 18 diagnostic categories of disease by age, breed and sex. RESULTS The prevalence was highest for urinary system disorders (12·2% for males and 10·0% for females), followed by digestive disorders (11·6% for males and 10·7% for females) and dermatological diseases (8·7% for males and 9·0% for females). The male cats had a higher prevalence than female cats for most diagnostic categories. The prevalence of cardiovascular, urinary, endocrine and neoplastic disorders increased with age; infectious and parasitic diseases had high prevalence at young ages, and the prevalence of respiratory, musculoskeletal disorders and injuries had bimodal peaks. Dermatological disorders had a high prevalence at all ages. A large variation in prevalence was observed between breeds for otic, dermatological, dental and cardiovascular disorders. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The findings can be used to increase awareness of patterns of health disorders in different categories of cat.

Novel amino acid-based surfactant for silicone emulsification and its application in hair care products: a promising alternative to quaternary ammonium cationic surfactants. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Quaternary ammonium cationic surfactants (ACSs) and N-[3-alkyl(12,14)oxy-2-hydroxypropyl]-l-arginine hydrochloride (N-AOHPA) were used to emulsify silicone. The potential of the resulting emulsions in hair conditioning products was investigated. METHODS The emulsions were prepared using a homogenizer and/or high-pressure homogenizer. ACSs and N-AOHPA were used as silicone emulsifiers. The stability of the emulsions was evaluated by measuring particle sizes, creaming fractions, polydispersity indexes and zeta potentials. Moreover, the N-AOHPA-stabilized emulsion was compared with the ACS-stabilized emulsion to evaluate the adsorption amount of silicone on healthy and bleached hair surfaces and the inhibitory effects on amino acid dissolution from bleached hair. The adsorption site of the N-AOHPA-stabilized emulsion was observed using a scanning electron microscope. RESULTS For all surfactants, the silicone emulsions prepared using the high-pressure homogenizer were more stable than those prepared using the homogenizer. When N-AOHPA was used as the surfactant, the silicone emulsion was especially stable. Furthermore, the d50 value of the N-AOHPA-stabilized emulsion was smaller than that of the ACS-stabilized emulsion. The adsorption behaviour of the silicone droplets in the different emulsions varied depending on the nature of the surfactant and the preparation method. The amount of ACS-stabilized silicone adsorbed on healthy hair was higher than that adsorbed on bleached hair, especially when the emulsion was prepared using the homogenizer. In contrast, the amount of N-AOHPA-stabilized silicone adsorbed on bleached hair was high, and no differences were observed between the N-AOHPA-stabilized emulsions prepared using the homogenizer and high-pressure homogenizer. The emulsified droplets, especially the N-AOHPA-stabilized droplets prepared using the high-pressure homogenizer, prevented amino acid dissolution from bleached hair. It was concluded that the silicone droplet adsorption site affected the dissolution process because the small N-AOHPA-stabilized droplets adsorbed at cuticle edges. CONCLUSION This study shows that N-AOHPA has good potential for use as an emulsifier in products used for improving the condition of damaged hair.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Epidemiologic evidence on the relationship between antioxidant vitamin intake and stroke is limited. We aimed to investigate the association between dietary intake of antioxidant vitamins and the incidence of total stroke and ischemic stroke. SUBJECTS/METHODS The subjects were 82 044 Japanese men and women aged 45-74 years under the Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective Cohort Study. Between 1995 and 1997, dietary assessment was done using a food frequency questionnaire. During 983 857 person-years of follow-up until the end of 2009 we documented 3541 incident total strokes and 2138 ischemic strokes. RESULTS Dietary intakes of α-carotene, β-carotene, α-tocopherol and vitamin C were not inversely associated with the incidence of total stroke and ischemic stroke adjustment for cardiovascular risk factors and selected lifestyle variables. When stratified by current smoking status, the inverse association between dietary vitamin C intake and incidence of total stroke observed among non-smokers but not smokers, with respective multivariable hazard ratios for the highest versus lowest quintiles of vitamin C of 0.81 (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.68-0.96; P-trend=0.03) among non-smokers; and 1.03 (0.84-1.25; P-trend=0.55) among smokers. As for ischemic stroke, the corresponding multivariable hazard ratios were 0.76 (0.60-0.96; P-trend=0.02) among non-smokers; and 1.00 (0.78-1.28; P-trend=0.61) among smokers. CONCLUSIONS Dietary vitamin C intake was inversely associated with the incidence of total stroke and ischemic stroke among non-smokers.

Abstract
Here we present a patient with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), who was suspected to have developed malignant lymphoma during immunosuppressive therapy 5 years earlier. She temporarily achieved remission after discontinuing therapy; however, her disease worsened with remittent fever and splenomegaly. Splenic biopsy demonstrated infiltration by abnormal cells, which were positive for CD56 and T cell intracytoplasmic antigen, but negative for CD3 and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) -encoded RNA. Cytogenetic analysis of bone marrow and lumbar spine tumor revealed common complex karyotype abnormalities. Thus, she was diagnosed with chronic natural killer cell lymphoproliferative disorder (NK-LPD) and finally died of disease progression. The most common type of LPD in methotrexate-related patients with RA is B-lymphoid LPD, whereas NK-LPD is extremely rare. Furthermore, almost all cases of NK-LPD have been reported to be positive for EBV. This is the first case report on a patient with EBV-negative NK-LPD developed during immunosuppressive therapy for RA.

Abstract
Mastication is an indispensable oral function related to physical, mental, and social health throughout life. The elderly tend to have a masticatory dysfunction due to tooth loss and fragility in the masticatory muscles with aging, potentially resulting in impaired cognitive function. Masticatory stimulation has influence on the development of the central nervous system (CNS) as well as the growth of maxillofacial tissue in children. Although the relationship between mastication and cognitive function is potentially important in the growth period, the cellular and molecular mechanisms have not been sufficiently elucidated. Here, we show that the reduced mastication resulted in impaired spatial memory and learning function owing to the morphological change and decreased activity in the hippocampus. We used an in vivo model for reduced masticatory stimuli, in which juvenile mice were fed with powder diet and found that masticatory stimulation during the growth period positively regulated long-term spatial memory to promote cognitive function. The functional linkage between mastication and brain was validated by the decrease in neurons, neurogenesis, neuronal activity, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression in the hippocampus. These findings taken together provide in vivo evidence for a functional linkage between mastication and cognitive function in the growth period, suggesting a need for novel therapeutic strategies in masticatory function-related cognitive dysfunction.

Abstract
Survival data analysis becomes complex when the proportional hazards assumption is violated at population level or when crude hazard rates are no longer estimators of marginal ones. We develop a Bayesian survival analysis method to deal with these situations, on the basis of assuming that the complexities are induced by latent cohort or disease heterogeneity that is not captured by covariates and that proportional hazards hold at the level of individuals. This leads to a description from which risk-specific marginal hazard rates and survival functions are fully accessible, 'decontaminated' of the effects of informative censoring, and which includes Cox, random effects and latent class models as special cases. Simulated data confirm that our approach can map a cohort's substructure and remove heterogeneity-induced informative censoring effects. Application to data from the Uppsala Longitudinal Study of Adult Men cohort leads to plausible alternative explanations for previous counter-intuitive inferences on prostate cancer. The importance of managing cardiovascular disease as a comorbidity in women diagnosed with breast cancer is suggested on application to data from the Swedish Apolipoprotein Mortality Risk Study. Abstract
Sleep problems are common in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This study aimed to examine the following: (1) predictors of sleep quality and (2) fluctuations in sleep quality in patients with SLE. Patients with SLE were recruited from three rheumatology centers in Japan. We collected demographic and clinical data and data on sleep quality as measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Medical Outcome Study Short Form-12, and the Lupus Patient Reported Outcome Tool (LupusPRO). Fluctuations in sleep quality were examined by administering the PSQI a second time after a 2-week interval. We used multiple linear regression analysis to predict sleep quality. Of 205 patients who completed the survey, 62.9% showed poor sleep quality. The largest fluctuation in sleep quality was for "waking in the middle of the night or early morning." "LupusPRO pain/vitality" was a major predictor of poor sleep. The other significant predictors were mostly LupusPRO subscales and clinical variables and SF-12 subscales were mostly non-predictive. The majority of the participants had poor sleep quality. A lupus-specific QoL scale is important for understanding poor sleep quality in SLE patients. Symptom management appeared to play a key role in improving sleep quality.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to validate the Japanese version of the LupusPRO questionnaire for use with systemic lupus erythematosus patients. Methods Participants were 205 lupus patients recruited from three rheumatology centers in Japan. Demographic data were collected and quality of life was assessed using the LupusPRO and the Short Form Health Survey-12. Disease activity was evaluated by physicians using the Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Activity Index. Some participants completed questionnaires 10-14 days after the first survey. Internal consistency reliability, test-retest reliability, content validity and convergent validity were examined, and confirmatory factor analysis was performed. Results Participants' mean age was 47.8 ± 13.6 years. Older participants scored lower on physical quality of life and higher on coping than younger participants. The LupusPRO showed satisfactory test-retest reliability ( n = 111). Test-retest reliability was lower for the mental and social aspects of quality of life, indicating fluctuations in quality of life during the two-week interval. Internal consistency reliability was good and convergent validity with the corresponding domains of the Short Form Health Survey-12 was satisfactory. Confirmatory factor analysis showed a good model fit. Conclusion The Japanese LupusPRO is a reliable and valid measure to evaluate treatment interventions for systemic lupus erythematosus.

Abstract
We developed a simple method for 40K removal by acidified water leaching combined with ammonium phosphomolybdate coprecipitation, for estimating low levels of radiocesium in Japanese flounder. 40K removal from ashed samples was approximately 98%, with the radiocesium yield of ~98%. The treatment reduced the γ-spectral baseline to ~1/5 at ground and ~3/100 at underground levels (1.04 and 0.11 cph/keV, respectively). Faint signal of 134Cs, which is embedded in the Compton continuum of 40K in an untreated sample, was detected.

Abstract
We reviewed the cases of 68 consecutive patients who were diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS, n=61) or acute erythroleukemia (AEL, n=7) according to the World Health Organization (WHO) 2008 criteria and had previously been treated with azacitidine, a hypomethylating agent. Fifteen MDS patients had bone marrow erythroblast frequencies of ≥50%, and 6 out of the 7 AEL patients were reclassified as MDS (refractory anemia with excess blasts [RAEB]-1: 1, RAEB-2: 5) according to the revised WHO 2016 criteria. There was no difference between the overall response ratio (41%), as determined by a hematological improvement in at least one of 3 lineages, of these erythroid rich patients and that of the control group, which comprised 46 MDS patients with bone marrow erythroblast frequencies of <50%. Three MDS patients that exhibited erythroid predominance achieved complete remission. The overall survival period (median: 15 months) of the erythroblast-predominant group was not inferior to that of the control group (median: 16 months). These results indicate that azacitidine is a promising treatment option for MDS/AEL irrespective of the numbers of erythroid cells in the patient's bone marrow.

Abstract
A nationwide retrospective study for the clinical outcomes of 99 patients who had received thymoglobulin at a median total dose of 2.5 mg/kg (range, 0.5-18.5 mg/kg) as a second-line treatment for steroid-resistant acute GvHD was conducted. Of the 92 evaluable patients, improvement (complete or partial response) was observed in 55 patients (60%). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that male sex and grade III and IV acute GvHD were associated with a lower improvement rate, whereas thymoglobulin dose (<2.0, 2.0-3.9 and ⩾4.0 mg/kg) was NS. Factors associated with significantly higher nonrelapse mortality included higher patient age (⩾50 years), grade IV acute GvHD, no improvement of GvHD and higher dose of thymoglobulin (hazard ratio, 2.55; 95% confidence interval, 1.34-4.85; P=0.004 for 2.0-3.9 mg/kg group and 1.79; 0.91-3.55; P=0.093 for ⩾4.0 mg/kg group). Higher dose of thymoglobulin was associated with a higher incidence of bacterial infections, CMV antigenemia and any additional infection. Taken together, low-dose thymoglobulin at a median total dose of 2.5 mg/kg provides a comparable response rate to standard-dose thymoglobulin reported previously, and <2.0 mg/kg thymoglobulin is recommended in terms of the balance between efficacy and adverse effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Although vitamin D has been experimentally reported to inhibit tumorigenesis, cell growth and prostate cancer invasion, epidemiologic data regarding prostate cancer risk are inconsistent, and some studies have suggested positive but nonsignificant associations. Further, the impact of vitamin D on prostate cancer between Western and Japanese populations may differ due to different plasma vitamin D levels. SUBJECTS/METHODS We performed a nested case-control study within the Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective (JPHC) Study in 14,203 men (40-69 years) who answered a self-administered questionnaire at baseline (1990-1994) and gave blood samples, and were followed until 2005. We identified 201 prostate cancers which are newly diagnosed during follow-up (mean 12.8 years). We selected two matched controls for each case from the cohort. We used a conditional logistic regression model to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for prostate cancer with respect to levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)D) in plasma. RESULTS We did not observe statistically significant association between 25(OH)D level and total prostate cancer (multivariate OR=1.13 (95%CI=0.66-1.94, Ptrend=0.94) for the highest versus lowest tertile) However, 25(OH) levels were slightly positively associated with advanced cancer. The results remained substantially unchanged after stratification by intake of fish or calcium intake. CONCLUSIONS 25(OH)D level showed no association with overall prostate cancer among Japanese men in this large cohort.

Abstract
We examined lateral distributions of 134Cs, 137Cs, 226Ra, and 228Ra in the surface seawaters around the Kuril Islands and the Kamchatka Peninsula in the northwestern North Pacific Ocean during June 2014. The sampling area included three water current areas, the Oyashio Current, the current from the Okhotsk Sea, and the coastal current along the east Kamchatka Peninsula. 226Ra and 228Ra distributions differed along the three currents. Low levels of 134Cs were detected in the surface waters of the Oyashio Current (0.09-0.35 mBq/L), but it was <∼0.1 mBq/L at the surface along the other two currents. This indicates that the distribution of Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP)-derived radiocesium in surface waters off the Kamchatka and along the Kuril Islands is predominantly governed by the Oyashio current system.

Exploring the effects of synchronous pharyngeal electrical stimulation with swallowing carbonated water on cortical excitability in the human pharyngeal motor system. Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous reports have revealed that excitation of human pharyngeal motor cortex can be induced by pharyngeal electrical stimulation (PES) and swallowing carbonated water (CW). This study investigated whether combining PES with swallowing (of still water, SW or CW) can potentiate this excitation in either cortical and/or brain stem areas assessed with transcranial and transcutaneous magnetic stimulation (TMS). METHODS Fourteen healthy volunteers participated and were intubated with an intraluminal catheter to record pharyngeal electromyography and deliver PES. Each participant underwent baseline corticopharyngeal, hand and craniobulbar motor-evoked potential (MEP) measurements. Subjects were then randomized to receive each of four 10-min interventions (PES only, ShamPES+CW, PES+CW, and PES+SW). Corticobulbar, craniobulbar and hand MEPs were then remeasured for up to 60 min and data analyzed using anova and post hoc t-tests. KEY RESULTS A two-way rmanova for Interventions × Time-point showed a significant corticopharyngeal interaction (p = 0.010). One-way anova with post hoc t-tests indicated significant cortical changes with PES only at 45 (p = 0.038) and 60 min (p = 0.023) and ShamPES+CW immediately (p = 0.008) but not with PES+CW or PES+SW. By contrast, there were immediate craniobulbar amplitude changes only with PES+CW (p = 0.020) which were not sustained. CONCLUSIONS & INFERENCES We conclude that only PES produced long-term changes in corticopharyngeal excitability whereas combination stimuli were less effective. Our data suggest that PES alone rather than in combination, may be better for the patients who have difficulty in performing voluntary swallows.

Abstract
A laboratory experiment was conducted by varying the undersurface area of nesting substratum and the number of females in an experimental tank to elucidate the determinants of the mating pattern in the stream goby, Rhinogobius sp. cross-band type. Males with larger nests tended to attract two or more females to their nest in a tank. Moreover, males spawned simultaneously with multiple females and entire brood cannibalism by males was rarely observed under a female-biased sex ratio. When males spawned with a single female with low fecundity, however, entire brood cannibalism occurred at a high frequency, suggesting that a male guarding a nest with fewer eggs consumes the brood. Therefore, spawning behaviour of females that leads to a large egg mass would decrease the risk of entire brood cannibalism. In this species, simultaneous spawning by multiple females in a nest serves as a female counter-measure against entire brood cannibalism. These results suggest that a conflict of interest between the sexes through brood cannibalism is a major determinant of simultaneous spawning.

Abstract
High-power giant pulses can be used applied in various applications with Q-switched micro-lasers. This method can shorten the pulse duration; however, active control is currently impossible in micro-lasers. To achieve precise pulse control while maintaining compactness and simplicity, we exploit the magneto-optical effect in magnetic garnet films with micromagnetic domains that can be actively controlled by a pulsed magnetic field. Our Q-switching technique enhances the output power by a factor of 4 × 103. Moreover, the device itself is smaller than other Q-switching devices. This novel type of active Q-switch can be combined with a micro-laser to obtain megawatt-order pulses.

Abstract
Background The use of midazolam for dental care in patients with intellectual disability is poorly documented. The purpose of this study was to determine which method of premedication is more effective for these patients, 0.15 mg/kg of intramuscular midazolam or 0.3 mg/kg of oral midazolam. Material and Methods This study was designed and implemented as a non-randomized retrospective study. The study population was composed of patients with intellectual disability who required dental treatment under ambulatory general anesthesia from August 2009 through April 2013. Patients were administered 0.15 mg/kg of midazolam intramuscularly (Group IM) or 0.3 mg/kg orally (Group PO). The predictor variable was the method of midazolam administration. The outcome variables measured were Observer’s Assessment of Alertness/ Sedation (OAA/S) Scale scores, the level of cooperation when entering the operation room and for venous cannulation, post-anesthetic agitation and recovery time. Results Midazolam was administered intramuscularly in 23 patients and orally in 21 patients. More patients were successfully sedated with no resistance behavior during venous cannulation in Group PO than in Group IM (p=0.034). There were no differences in demographic data and other variables between the groups. Conclusions The results of this study suggest that oral premedication with 0.3 mg/kg of midazolam is more effective than 0.15 mg/kg of midazolam administered intramuscularly, in terms of patient resistance to venous cannulation. If both oral and intramuscular routes of midazolam are acceptable in intellectually disabled patients, the oral route is recommended. Key words:Premedication, midazolam, intellectual disability.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate by immunohistochemical means the nuclear expression of p27 and p21 proteins in cutaneous mast cell tumors and histiocytomas of dogs. In mast cell tumors, nine of the 13 grade I tumors, 13 of the 19 grade II tumors, and 10 of the 15 grade III tumors showed no detectable or mild p27 immunoreactivity. In contrast, one of the 13 grade I tumors, 12 of the 19 grade II tumors, and 11 of the 15 grade III tumors showed moderate or marked p21 immunoreactivity. Nineteen of the 28 histiocytomas showed no detectable or mild p27 immunoreactivity, and 24 cases showed moderate or marked p21 immunoreactivity. These findings indicate that a loss or absence of p27 expression is an early pathogenic event in mast cell and histiocyte tumorigenesis and that p21 expression may be a marker of mast cell tumor progression and histiocytoma cell proliferation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We report a rare case of 10-month-old female who underwent living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) for syndromic biliary atresia with preduodenal portal vein (PV) and its severe stricture owing to the previous Kasai portoenterostomy. Because we successfully performed "left at right liver transplantation (LAR-LT) and graft rerotation" in this case, we are present tips and pitfalls for this operation. METHODS Preoperative computed tomography scan showed that her preduodenal PV was stenotic from the confluence of the superior mesenteric vein and splenic vein to hepatic hilum, which made us consider the necessity of ≥3 cm interposition vein graft to complete a safe PV anastomosis. To reduce a gap between donor and recipient's PV, we decided to put a left lateral section graft at the right subphrenic space called left-at-right liver transplantation. Thus, LDLT was performed with an identical lateral sectional graft from her father. After total hepatectomy, we implanted a graft in her right subphrenic space, and anastomosed the donor left hepatic vein to her inferior vena cava. Then, we anastomosed an interposition graft harvested from her left internal carotid vein to her PV. RESULTS Even after reflowing PV flow, because the duodenum compressed the interposition vein graft, PV flows were totally insufficient. Therefore, we flipped a liver graft 180° from right to left upper abdominal cavity, which could reduce the gap between PVs and acceptable PV flow was obtained. CONCLUSIONS In the present case, LAR-LT could reduce the distance of PVs. In addition, our rerotation method could be useful to alleviate tension on the PV anastomosis caused by preduodenal PV.

Abstract
Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)/TNF receptors (TNFR1/TNFR2) are considered to be potential drug targets to treat refractory diseases, including autoimmune diseases and malignant tumors. However, their specific functions, especially in the case of TNFR2, are poorly understood. In this study, we constructed a mouse TNFR2 (mTNFR2)-mediated biological assay system that shows no effects of mouse TNFR1 (mTNFR1) in order to screen mTNFR2-selective stimulating agents. Mouse TNFR1(-/-)R2(-/-) preadipocytes were transfected with the gene encoding the mTNFR2/mouse Fas (mFas) chimeric receptor in which the extracellular and transmembrane domains of mTNFR2 were fused to the intracellular domain of mFas. Our results demonstrated that this cell line exhibits highly sensitive mTNFR2-mediated cytotoxic effects. We propose that this mTNFR2-mediated biological assay system would be a useful tool to screen for mTNFR2-selective stimulating agents.

Abstract
A 63-year-old man with Bence Jones-κ multiple myeloma (MM) presented with renal impairment. First, we administered a bortezomib-containing regimen which is considered to be the first choice among therapeutic approaches for MM patients with renal failure. However, his condition was refractory to bortezomib, and the renal dysfunction worsened (creatinine 12.55mg/dl) necessitating the initiation of hemodialysis. Subsequently, we administered an adjusted dose of lenalidomide and dexamethasone. Dialysis could be discontinued after 3 cycles of lenalidomide therapy. After 4 cycles, he achieved a stringent complete response (sCR) with the creatinine level at 1.85mg/dl. This case suggests lenalidomide to be an effective drug for patients with multiple myeloma and renal impairment refractory to treatment with bortezomib.

Abstract
Magnetophotonic crystals (MPCs) comprising cerium-substituted yttrium iron garnet (CeYIG) sandwiched by two Bragg mirrors were fabricated by vacuum annealing. CeYIG was deposited on Bragg mirrors at room temperature and annealed in 5 Pa of residual air. No ceria or other non-garnet phases were detected. Cerium 3 + ions substituted on the yttrium sites and no cerium 4 + ions were found. The Faraday rotation angle of the MPC was -2.92° at a wavelength of λ = 1570 nm was 30 times larger than that of the CeYIG film. These results showed good agreement with calculated values derived using a matrix approach.

Abstract
A medical check-up revealed severe anemia in an 85-year-old man who had been diagnosed with Waldenström macroglobulinemia 11 years previously. On the other hand, prolonged PT and aPTT were demonstrated on admission, and were attributed to a significant decrease in factor X activity. These abnormalities were all considered to be have been caused by an exacerbation of the underlying disease and, thus, chemotherapy with the RCD regimen (rituximab, cyclophosphamide, dexamethasone) was started. No significant improvement was obtained and the patient died suddenly on day 154. AL amyloidosis was diagnosed by histopathological examinations and also confirmed by a sequence analysis of amyloid protein. This case with Waldenström macroglobulinemia complicated by AL amyloidosis and recurrent factor X deficiency is quite rare.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although late-onset complications are important factors related to inadequate outcomes of lung transplantation (LTx), little is known about them. The results of LTx for lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) patients, which is a large cohort of LTx recipients in Japan, especially with late-onset complications, are reported. METHODS Thirteen consecutive LTx cases with LAM at our institute were evaluated, and those with late-onset complications were identified. RESULTS The 5-year survival rate was 69.2%. There were 4 cases with late-onset complications. Case 1: A 35-year-old woman who underwent right single LTx and sustained uncontrollable massive chylous ascites. She underwent placement of a peritoneal-venous shunt, and the ascites was controlled. Unfortunately, she died of small cell cervical cancer (SCCC) 43 months after the LTx. Case 2: A 50-year-old woman who underwent left single LTx had pneumothorax of the native lung 16 months after the LTx. She underwent operative repair of the right lung with a polyglycolic acid (PGA) sheet. She had no recurrence of pneumothorax 1 year after the operation. Case 3: A 33-year-old woman, who underwent left single LTx, had recurrence of LAM in the transplanted lung 2 years after the LTx. She was started on sirolimus. Case 4: A 47-year-old woman, who underwent right single LTx, developed repeated high fevers. She developed an acute abdomen, and swollen subcutaneous lymph nodes were found. After lymph node biopsy, she was diagnosed as having post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder, and she died 8 months after the LTx. CONCLUSION It is hoped that these reports and the knowledge gained from them help improve the outcomes of LTx recipients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many users in Japan of skin brightening/lightening cosmetics containing rhododendrol (RD) have developed leucoderma. Leucoderma appears on skin areas repeatedly treated with RD-containing cosmetics. RD-induced leucoderma (RDIL) presents different degrees of well-defined hypopigmentation. It is crucial to determine the degree of hypopigmentation to differentiate RDIL from vitiligo vulgaris (VV). OBJECTIVES To quantitatively evaluate hypopigmentation of RDIL lesions and the recovery of pigmentation, and to compare the hypopigmentation with VV and normal skin. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixteen cases of RDIL, nine cases of VV and 15 healthy controls were examined using a novel multispectral camera (MSC) that can simultaneously obtain the reflection intensity at 10-nm wavelength intervals from 400 to 760 nm of the photographed area. ∆Absorbance was calculated by subtracting the log of reflection intensity of the target area from that of a white reflection standard. RESULTS Most RDIL lesions showed lower ∆Absorbance than healthy skin and higher ∆Absorbance than VV lesions between 400 and 550 nm. Statistical comparison of the maximum ∆Absorbance from 420 to 460 nm (Max∆Absorbance) for VV, RDIL and control skin showed that the Max∆Absorbance of RDIL was significantly higher than that of VV and lower than that of control skin. The comparison of ∆Absorbance of the same sites in RDIL lesions between the initial visit and 6 months later showed significant improvement after 6 months. CONCLUSIONS These studies demonstrated quantitative changes in RDIL and its recovery phase and suggested the utility of a MSC in obtaining objective colour information of skin disorders.

Abstract
Closed treatment for condylar fractures has long been widely accepted. With closed treatment, the deviated bone fragments heal in their new positions, and this may subsequently cause a range of functional impairments. The association between healing morphology and post-treatment functional impairment is unclear. In this study, computed tomography images of 26 patients (35 sides) who had undergone closed treatment for condylar fractures were used to perform a comparative investigation of three-dimensional (3D) bone morphology before and after treatment. As a result, the morphology of the condylar process after treatment was classified into four different patterns: unchanged, spherical, L-shaped, and detached. In terms of the association between fracture types and healing morphology, fractures of the condylar head healed in the spherical pattern, simple fractures of the condylar neck healed in the spherical or L-shaped pattern, and comminuted fractures of the condylar neck healed in the spherical, L-shaped, or detached pattern. The association between mandibular deviation and healing morphology was also investigated, and it was found that deviation was greater for the spherical and detached patterns than for the L-shaped pattern. The present findings indicate that 3D evaluation of the fractured condylar process is required to elucidate the association with functional impairment after healing.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Paracentral acute middle maculopathy (PAMM) has been described as an ischemic lesion of the middle retinal layers with a characteristic lamellar hyper-reflective placoid appearance in the acute phase and thinning of the involved retinal layers in the chronic phase. Optical coherence tomographic angiography (OCTA) is a novel and non-invasive technique for imaging retinal capillary vasculature with en face segmentation capabilities. METHOD Case series. We describe two patients with PAMM who underwent clinical examination and multimodal imaging including OCTA. RESULTS In the first patient, who presented with PAMM secondary to acute cilioretinal artery occlusion, OCTA demonstrated reduction in flow in the deep capillary plexus (DCP). One month later, OCTA revealed a flow void due to thinning of the GCL, INL, and OPL and paradoxical apparent ONL thickening. Similar findings of focal retinal lamellar ectopia were seen in the second patient, who had an incidentally detected chronic PAMM lesion. CONCLUSIONS OCTA images the superficial and deep capillary plexi independently. PAMM is characterized by acute and chronic attenuation of the DCP flow signature. Focal lamellar ectopia in PAMM is discussed.
