Characterization of phages derived from strains of Rhodococcus australis and R. equii

Rhodococcus australis strain CSIR-A201 and R. equii strain CSIR-A655 spontaneously liberated phages A and B, respectively. The phages have different host ranges, but both infect R. rubropertinctus ATCC 14352. phage infection of strains resulted in stable lysogeny. The phages have similar morphologies and belong to the family Styloviridae. The DNA restriction enzyme patterns of the phages differ and do not correspond to those of actinophage phi EC. These temperate phages did not transduce prototrophic or antibiotic resistance markers to appropriate hosts.

[Spinal tumors: apropos of 100 cases]

One hundred cases of spinal tumors are studied concerning to the histological type, age, topography and evolution of the clinical manifestation. In the given material was identified a predominance of the tumors of the neural tissue and associated structures: neurinomas (16%), meningiomas (15%), ependymomas (4%) and astrocytomas (2%); following metastatic tumors (32%), tumors of mesenchymal tissue (16%): fibroma (2%), lipomas (2%), haemangioblastoma (4%), angiosarcoma (2%), angioma (1%), angioblastoma (1%), chordomas (2%), osteoblastoma (1%) and adamantinoid tumor (1%); tumors of lymphatic and haematopoietic tissue: plasmacytoma (6%), histiocytic lymphoma (3%), lymphocytic lymphoma (2%), Hodgkin (1%) and unclassified lymphomas (1%); teratomas: differentiated teratoma (1%).

[Spontaneous supratentorial intracerebral hematomas: apropos of 28 cases]

Twenty eight patients with supratentorial spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage have been reviewed as concerns the location disclosed by angiography, the morbidity and the mortality. The results are analysed with consideration to the presence of arterial hypertension, consciousness disfunction and topography of the lesion. The conflicting opinions in the literature concerning the surgical treatment of spontaneous intercerebral hemorrhage are pointed out.

[Expectoration of cerebrospinal fluid: an unusual complication of ventriculoperitoneal shunt]

A child, who had undergone ventriculoperitoneal shunting, presented with repeated episodes of pneumonia and expectoration of CSF. Chest x-ray demonstrated the presence of the shunt catheter in the base of the left lung. In the present case the distal end of the catheter perforated the diaphragm, entering the thoracic cavity through the pleura and penetrating the pulmonary parenchyma. CSF then flowed freely into the alveoli and bronchi and became expectorated during repeated bouts of coughing associated with pneumonia. This respiratory complication disappeared after the removal of the catheter. We theorize that the penetration of the catheter into the thoracic cavity was secondary to its displacement from the iliac fossa to the left infradiaphragmatic space between the spleen and the diaphragm where the intra-abdominal pressure is lowest. The respiratory movements and the hypertension inside the abdomen created a constant friction of the catheter against the diaphragm which was finally perforated, permitting the passage of the peritoneal end of the shunting device into the thoracic cavity and secondary penetration of the lung.

[Percutaneous cordotomy]

São estudados os resultados obtidos em 47 cordotomias percutâneas realizadas em 43 pacientes. A técnica utilizada, os reparos anatômicos, o controle radiológico e o neurofisiológico são descritos e comentados. Não foi observada diferença nos resultados tendo como referência a duração e o tipo de dor, bem como a existência prévia de deficiência sensitiva. As complicações decorrentes da lesão medular são descritas e comparadas com as relatadas na literatura, observando-se resultados semelhantes. O estudo da casuística permite concluir que o método é útil, pouco traumático, podendo ser indicado em pacientes em mau estado geral. A realização da lesão, com o paciente acordado, oferece a vantagem de um controle mais preciso dos resultados imediatos.

[Mycotic aneurysm of extravascular origin]

The case of a female patient presenting a complete unilateral ophthalmoplegia secundaru to a septic aneurysm of the internal carotid artery is reported. The possible existence of an extravascular infectious etiology in vies of the presence of trombophelebitis of the cavernous sinus is discussed. Pertinent reports from the literature are reviewed and the rarity of the phenomenn is commented. The indication for internal carotid artery ligation as a form of treatment deserves further observations.

[New surgical possibility in the therapy of cerebrospinal fluid fistulae]

O autor descreve uma nova possibilidade cirúrgica para o tratamento das fístulas liquóricas por patologia de base do crânio. Consiste na derivação do líquido cefalorraqueano, por meio de cateter, do fundo de saco durai lombar para a musculatura paravertebral, no mesmo nível. A cura da fístula liquórica nos cinco pacientes em que foi utilizada, autoriza a recomendação do seu uso.

[Treatment of aneurysms of the anterior cerebral artery]

Os autores analisam a evolução do tratamento cirúrgico de aneurismas do sistema da artéria cerebral anterior no Instituto de Neurocirurgia de Porto Alegre, de 1960 a junho de 1972. Foram operados 63 pacientes, dos quais 41 por ataque direto. Consideram que o estudo angiográfico só deve ser feito em pacientes em condições clínicas satisfatórias ou estabilizadas. Descrevem pormenorisadamente a técnica cirúrgica preconisada em 1967 por um dos autores e o método de tratar tais aneurismas desde então. Apresentam quadros demonstrativos dos resultados obtidos em épocas sucessivas e os resultados globais alcançados. Acreditam que as técnicas atuais de tratamento serão favorecidas pela microcirurgia, mas uma via de acesso simples será sempre um fator favorável.

[Extradural arachnoid cyst of the spinal canal]

É relatado o caso de um paciente que apresentava paraparesia sensitivo-motora evolutiva, datando de um ano. As radiográficas da coluna vertebral e mielografia permitiram o diagnóstico de cisto de aracnóide extradural do canal espinal de localização torácica, que foi confirmado pelo ato cirúrgico. Os autores revisam a literatura assinalando 76 casos já publicados. São comentadas a incidência do processo patológico nos diversos grupos etários, sua localização ao longo do canal raqueano, a evolução do quadro clínico, a etiología e a fisiopatologia do crescimento do cisto, o diagnóstico, a terapêutica e o prognóstico.

[Russel's syndrome or diencephalic syndrome of emaciation]

Os autores relatam um caso de síndrome de Russel ou síndrome diencefálica do emagrecimento. Revisam a literatura disponível sobre o assunto e comentam a dificuldade do diagnóstico na fase inicial da doença.

Sobressalto patológico: aspectos clínicos e eletrencefalográficos

Os autores relatam o caso de um paciente apresentando crises de sobressalto provocadas por estímulos auditivos, sensitivos e visuais, sem crises epilépticas espontâneas nem retardo psicomotor. Estudam os aspectos clínicos e eletrencefalográficos e revisam a situação da entidade entre as assim chamadas epilepsias reflexas.

Ataxia-telangiectasia

São apresentados os casos de dois irmãos com ataxia-telangiectasia, estudados sob os pontos de vista clínico, eletrencefalográfico, liquórico e encefalográfico. O autor resume os achados de diversos autores e chama a atenção para a regressão parcial da síndrome cerebelar em ambos os pacientes, fato ainda não referido na literatura.
