Abstract
There are few reports describing the structure and function of the whale placenta with
the advance of pregnancy. In this study, therefore, the placenta and nonpregnant uterus of
the Antarctic minke whale were observed morphologically and immunohistochemically.
Placentas and nonpregnant uteri were collected from the 15th, 16th and 18th Japanese Whale
Research Programme with Special Permit in the Antarctic (JARPA) and 1st JARPA II organized
by the Institute of Cetacean Research in Tokyo, Japan. In the macro- and microscopic
observations, the placenta of the Antarctic minke whale was a diffuse and epitheliochorial
placenta. The chorion was interdigitated to the endometrium by primary, secondary and
tertiary villi, which contained no specialized trophoblast cells such as binucleate cells,
and the interdigitation became complicated with the progress of gestation. Furthermore,
fetal and maternal blood vessels indented deeply into the trophoblast cells and
endometrial epithelium respectively with fetal growth. The minke whale placenta showed a
fold-like shape as opposed to a finger-like shape. In both nonpregnant and pregnant uteri,
many uterine glands were distributed. The uterine glands in the superficial layer of the
pregnant endometrium had a wide lumen and large epithelial cells as compared with those in
the deep layer. On the other hand, in the nonpregnant endometrium, the uterine glands had
a narrower lumen and smaller epithelial cells than in the pregnant endometrium. In
immunohistochemical detection, immunoreactivity for P450scc was detected in most
trophoblast cells, but not in nonpregnant uteri, suggesting that trophoblast epithelial
cells synthesized and secreted the sex steroid hormones and/or their precursors to
maintain the pregnancy in the Antarctic minke whale.

Abstract
The morphology of the stomach of Malayan pangolin, Manis javanica was studied at macroscopic, light microscopic, and scanning electron microscopic levels. The stomach of M. javanica was C-shaped with short lesser curvature. At the oesophageal junction, the inner smooth muscle was thickened in the greater curvature side. The entire stomach was lined by a thick cornified stratified squamous epithelium, except at the duct orifices of glands and in the pyloric gland region. The wall of the fundus was thin and devoid of glands. The gastric glands consisted of mucous, oxyntic, and pyloric glands. The mucous glands were observed in the lesser curvature (Mg-L), in the greater curvature (Mg-G), and in the pyloric canal (Mg-C) respectively. The oxyntic glands were organized into gland mass, making an oval mound elevated to the gastric lumen, in the middle of the greater curvature. The oxyntic gland mass has a single common duct with opening directed to the pyloric side. This duct was surrounded by mucus gland (Mg-G). The pyloric glands were located caudal to the pylorus. There was no sphincter at the pyloric-duodenal junction. Large mucosal protuberance, the torus pyloricus was observed in the side of the lesser curvature of the pyloric canal. In the lumen of pyloric canal region, numerous spines and small pebbles were observed. The muscle layers in the wall of this region were considerably thickened. The present results on the stomach of M. javanica are thought to be closely related to the toothless and eating habits of this animal species.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of electroacupuncture at Zusanli on the immunohistochemical density of enteroendocrine cells related to gastrointestinal function. The authors investigated the histochemical changes of mucous substances and immunohistochemical density of gastrin, serotonin, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), insulin, and pancreatic polypeptide (PP) secreting cells in rats. Staining density of mucous substances and the enteroendocrine cells of the gastrointestinal tract was observed with histochemical and immunohistochemical methods. Stainless steel needles with a diameter of 0.25 mm were inserted into Zusanli (St36, 5mm below the head of the fibula under the knee joint, and 2mm lateral to the anterior tubercle of the tibia) and connected to an electrical stimulator. The electroacupuncture (EA) stimulation was delivered for 30 minutes at 10 mA, 2 Hz in EA stimulation (2EA group) or 4 Hz in EA stimulation (4EA group) in each experimental group. In 4EA stimulation at the Zusanli, staining density of Alcian blue-periodic acid-Schiff on mucous substances of the stomach body was stronger than those of the 2EA and control groups. Periodic acid-Schiff staining density of pyloric mucosa in the 4EA group was stronger than that of the 2EA and control groups. The immunohistochemical staining density of gastrin, serotonin, and CGRP-secreting cells of pylorus in the 2EA and 4EA groups was stronger than that of the control group. Immunohistochemical staining density of insulin and PP secreting cells of islets of the pancreas in the 2EA and 4EA groups was stronger than that of the control group. These results suggest that EA stimulus at St36 has the potential to influence gastric mucous substances and enteroendocrine cells (gastrin, serotonin, CGRP, insulin, and PP) that subsequently modulate digestive functions.

Abstract
The regional distribution and relative frequency of peptide YY (PYY)-, pancreatic polypeptide (PP)-, and glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1)-immunoreactive (IR) cells were determined immunohistochemically in the gastrointestinal tract at seven ontogenetic stages in pre- and postnatal cattle. Different frequencies of PYY-, PP-, and GLP-1-IR cells were found in the intestines at all stages; they were not found in the esophagus and stomach. The frequencies varied depending on the intestinal segment and the developmental stage. The frequencies of PYY- and PP-IR cells were lower in the small intestine and increased from ileum to rectum, whereas GLP-1-IR cells were more numerous in duodenum and jejunum, decreased in ileum and cecum, and increased again in colon and rectum. The frequencies also varied according to pre- and postnatal stages. All three cell types were most numerous in fetus, and decreased in calf and adult groups, indicating that the frequencies of these three types of endocrine cells decrease with postnatal development. The results suggest that these changes vary depending on feeding habits and adaptation of growth, secretion, and motility of intestine at different ontogenetic stages of cattle.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The chemokine receptor CCR4 has been implicated in Th2 cell-mediated immune responses. However, other T cell subsets are also known to participate in allergic inflammation. OBJECTIVE The role of CCR4 in Th1, Th2, and Th17 cell-mediated allergic airway inflammation was investigated. METHOD We generated an allergic airway inflammation model by adoptive transfer of in vitro-polarized ovalbumin (OVA)-specific Th1, Th2, and Th17 cells. The effect of a low-molecular weight CCR4 antagonist, Compound 22, on this model was examined. RESULTS Upon in vitro polarization of DO11.10 naïve T cells, Th1- and Th2-polarized cells dominantly expressed CXCR3 and CCR4, respectively, while Th17-polarized cells expressed CCR6 and CCR4. Intranasal OVA-challenge of mice transferred with each T cell subset induced accumulation of T cells in the lungs. Eosinophils were also massively accumulated in Th2-transferred mice, whereas neutrophils were preferentially recruited in Th1- and Th17-transferred mice. Compound 22, as well as anti-CCL17 or anti-CCL22 antibody selectively suppressed accumulation of Th2 cells and eosinophils in the lungs of Th2-transferred and OVA-challenged mice. Compound 22 also inhibited bronchial hyperresponsiveness but had little effect on goblet cell hyperplasia in Th2-transferred and OVA-challenged mice. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE There were notable differences in allergic lung inflammation mediated by different T cell subsets. CCR4 blockage was selectively effective for suppression of Th2-mediated allergic inflammation by blocking infiltration of Th2 cells.

Abstract
ABSTRACTFormation of Au colloid particles and their optical property have been investigated in silica glasses implanted with Au+ ions at an acceleration energy of 1.5MeV and fluence levels of 1016-1017 ions/cm2. The Au colloid particles are formed in the as-implanted glasses. It is inferred that the average radius of Au colloid particles depends on the fluence level, although the fluence level does not affect the distribution of Au atomic concentration. The heat-treatment little affects the Au atomic distribution. The Au colloid particles grow to 4.3nm in average radius during heat treatment. It is revealed that the large nonlinear optical property of the Au+ -ion-implanted silica glass is attributed to the high concentration of the Au colloid particles in the narrow region.

Abstract
Autotransplantation is often performed to replace a missing tooth, but tooth autotransplantation has been reported in fewer teeth with complete root formation than those with incomplete root formation. The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the factors that affect the prognosis of autotransplantation of teeth with complete root formation. 109 patients with 117 transplants were studied. Of the 117 transplants investigated, 14 (12%) failed during the observation period. The overall 1-year survival rate was 96%; the 5-year survival rate was 84%. The major causes of failure were unsuccessful initial healing and replacement root resorption with periodontal inflammation. Factors significantly associated with unsuccessful transplantation, in single factor analysis, were age 40 years or more, molar tooth as donor, probing pocket depth to 4mm or more, history of root canal treatment, multi-rooted teeth and fixation with sutures. Pocket depth of 4mm or more and history of root canal treatment appeared to increase the risk of unsuccessful transplantation in multivariate analysis. It is suggested that the pocket depth of the donor tooth and history of root canal treatment are related to the healing of paratransplantal tissue and root resorption.
