Abstract
Reduced-impact logging (RIL) is an alternative land use because it reduces damage to forest cover in comparison with clear-cut practices. However, management practices adopted in RIL can affect wood availability and, consequently, fauna associated with dead wood during part of their life cycle (saproxylic). In this study, we evaluated whether aquatic saproxylic macroinvertebrates are affected by reduced-impact logging in Central Amazonia. We selected six streams in areas under reduced-impacted logging and six in primary forest areas and collected submerged woody debris. We did not find any differences in water pH, conductivity, and wood availability between reduced-impacted forest and primary forest streams. We found 248 saproxylic aquatic macroinvertebrates belonging to 37 taxa. We found five wood specialist (Dryops, Lutrochus, Stenochironomus, Oukuriella, and Endotribelos) and 32 generalists, totalling 98 and 150 individuals, respectively. In general, our results show that reduced-impact logging does not affect richness, abundance, and composition of saproxylic macroinvertebrates. The main explanation for this pattern is that management practices do not change important macroinvertebrate niche dimensions, including wood availability and the water's chemical and physical variables. Thus, controlled logging, such as applied in the area of the Central Amazonian streams studied, opens a new prospect for insect conservation and commercial exploitation of wood, which is not possible when clear-cut practices are adopted.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine the efficacy of a solar-powered TiO2 semiconductor electric toothbrush on Porphyromonas gingivalis biofilm. METHODS P. gingivalis cells were cultivated on sterilized coverslips under anaerobic conditions and were used as a biofilm. To evaluate the efficacy of the solar-powered TiO2 electric toothbrush on the P. gingivalis biofilm, the bacterial cell biofilm coverslips were placed into sterilized phosphate buffered saline (PBS) and brushed for 1 minute. Following mechanical brushing, the coverslips were stained with 1% crystal violet (CV) for 10 seconds at room temperature. The efficacy of P. gingivalis biofilm removal by the solar-powered TiO2 electric toothbrush was measured through the absorbance of the CV-stained solution containing the removed biofilm at 595 nm. The antimicrobial effect of the solar-powered TiO2 semiconductor was evaluated by the P. gingivalis bacterial count in PBS by blacklight irradiation for 0 to 60 minutes at a distance of 7 cm. The electrical current though the solar-powered TiO2 semiconductor was measured by a digital multimeter. The biofilm removal by the solar-powered TiO2 semiconductor was also evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). RESULTS The biofilm removal rate of the solar-powered TiO2 electric toothbrush was 90.1 ± 1.4%, which was 1.3-fold greater than that of non-solar-powered electric toothbrushes. The solar-powered TiO2 semiconductor significantly decreased P. gingivalis cells and biofilm microbial activity in a time-dependent manner (P< 0.01). The electrical current passing through the solar-powered TiO2 semiconductor was 70.5 ± 0.1 µA, which was a 27-fold higher intensity than the non-solar-powered brush. SEM analysis revealed that the solar-powered TiO2 semiconductor caused a biofilm disruption and that cytoplasmic contents were released from the microbial cells.

Abstract
PURPOSE To simulate an oral demineralization environment by multiple species of bacteria by inducing subsurface dentin lesions with a polymicrobial biofilm model. METHODS Polymicrobial biofilms consisting of multiple species of bacteria were generated from stimulated saliva using a high-throughput active attachment model. Biofilms were grown on dentin specimens in McBain medium containing 0, 0.2 or 2.5 ppm F and on glass without fluoride for 192 hours. The medium was refreshed twice daily, after 10 and 14 hours, until 72 hours, followed by treatment for 5 minutes with 400 ppm fluoride. Specimens were recovered after 192 hours. The number of colony forming units (CFU) was measured, and integrated mineral loss (IML) was determined by transversal microradiography. RESULTS Mineral profiles in specimens grown with 0.2F and 2.5F revealed surface layers and initial lesions distinct from those grown with 0F. IML was significantly lower with 0.2F and 2.5F than with 0F (P < 0.05), although CFUs were similar. CFUs of biofilms grown on dentin in medium containing 0F were 10-fold higher than on glass (P < 0.05). Subsurface lesions on dentin formed consistently, with their growth progression inhibited by application of fluoride. To our knowledge, this is the first report describing the induction of subsurface dentin lesions by a polymicrobial biofilm model, and this model may be useful for studies of demineralization supporting in situ and in vivo models.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the in vitro antimicrobial effects of carbamide peroxide (CP) and CP-based home bleaching agents against polymicrobial (PM) biofilms. METHODS Using a high-throughput active attachment model, PM biofilms were cultured on glass coverslips by diluting the stimulated saliva of one healthy adult. All experiments were performed anaerobically in McBain medium, which was refreshed twice daily. After biofilm formation for 24 or 72 hours, the biofilms were treated with 0.5%, 2.5%, 5%, or 10% CP, 20-fold dilutions of HiLite Shade Up (HS) or Opalescence Regular (OR), 0.2% chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX), 0.2% NaF, or deionized water (n = 10 each). Biofilms were dispersed and the number of colony forming units (CFU) was measured on tryptic soy agar blood plates. Coverslips containing 72-hour biofilms treated with 0.5% and 10% CP and deionized water were stained and scanned by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). RESULTS Treatment of 24- and 72-hour biofilms with HS, OR and CH yielded significantly fewer colonies than treatment with water or 0.2% NaF. No growing colonies were observed after treatment with 10% CP. CLSM showed that the percentage of dead bacteria increased as the concentration of CP increased.

Abstract
The Amazon region, known for its mega-biodiversity, also holds large reserves of petroleum and natural gas. The increasing exploitation of natural gas and crude oil in the Amazon has not been accompanied by studies evaluating the impact of these pollutants on local biological communities, particularly aquatic organisms. The aim of the present study was to determine the values of acute and chronic toxicity of crude oil from Urucu to larvae of Chironomus kiiensis Tokunaga, 1936. The LD5048h of crude oil for second-instar larvae of C. kiiensis was 26.5 mg/L, and mortality for the majority of concentrations tested was greatest during the first 24 hours of the experiment. The survival of eggs of C. kiiensis exposed to concentrations of crude oil was also evaluated but did not differ significantly among the treatments. Despite the high tolerance observed for the species in the experiments, there is a possibility that in the natural environment the oil interacts with other factors, leading to synergistic effects, so further studies are needed to assess the effects of this pollutant on aquatic insect species.

Jixueteng, the dried stem of Spatholobus suberectus Dunn (Leguminosae), is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine that is commonly classified as a herb that promotes blood circulation and can be used to treat blood stasis. The aim of this study was to examine the reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging activity of Jixueteng and other herbal medicines. The ROS scavenging activities of the water extracts of Jixueteng, Cnidium officinale and Salvia miltiorrhiza were examined using an electron spin resonance (ESR) technique and faint luminescence measurement. The ESR signal intensities of the superoxide anion (O2•-) and hydroxyl radical (HO•) were reduced more by Jixueteng than the other herbal medicines we tested. High photon emission intensity to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and HO• was observed in Jixueteng using the XYZ chemiluminescence system that was used as faint luminescence measurement and analysis. The results of the present study revealed that the ROS scavenging activity of 8% Jixueteng was the strongest among the herbal medicines we tested. It has been reported that Jixueteng includes various polyphenols. In the ROS scavenging activity by Jixueteng, it is supposed that the antioxidant activity caused by these polyphenols would contribute greatly. In conclusion, a water extract component of Jixueteng had potent free radical scavenging activity and an antioxidative effect that inhibited the oxidative actions of O2•-, H2O2 and HO•. Therefore, Jixueteng represents a promising therapeutic drug for reactive oxygen-associated pathologies.

Abstract
Porphyromonas gulae is considered to be associated with canine periodontitis. We have previously reported that the P. gulae American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) 51700 comprised 41-kDa fimbriae. The purpose of the present study was to demonstrate the roles of 41-kDa fimbrial protein in periodontal disease. In this study, we examined the involvement of the 41-kDa fimbrial protein in osteoclast differentiation and cytokine production in murine macrophages. Furthermore, alveolar bone resorption induced by P. gulae infection in rats was evaluated. To estimate osteoclast differentiation, bone marrow cells and MC3T3-G2/PA6 cells were cultured with or without the 41-kDa fimbrial protein for 7 days. BALB/c mouse peritoneal macrophages were stimulated with the 41-kDa fimbrial protein, and the levels of interleukin (IL)-1β and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α production were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Osteoclast differentiation was significantly enhanced by treatment with the 41-kDa fimbrial protein in a dose-dependent manner. The total area of pits formed on the dentine slices with osteoclasts incubated with the 41-kDa fimbrial protein was significantly greater than that of the control. The purified 41-kDa fimbrial protein induced IL-1β and TNF-α production in BALB/c mouse peritoneal macrophages after 6 hr of incubation in a dose-dependent manner. The bone loss level in rats infected with P. gulae was significantly higher than that of the sham-infected rats. These results suggest that P. gulae 41-kDa fimbriae play important roles in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this paper was to determine prevalence and incidence of intervention required for concomitant Asymptomatic Vascular Disease (AVD) on patients undergoing their first elective peripheral arterial intervention. METHODS This is a prospective observational study Data was obtained on patients undergoing peripheral revascularisation, abdominal aortic aneurysmal (AAA) repair or carotid procedure from 2006 to 2009. Of 542 complex arterial procedures, 328 patients had their first vascular intervention. (PAD=127, AAA=97, CAD=83, concomitant AAA and PAD=21). Primary endpoint is detection of any concomitant asymptomatic AAA, CAS or PAD. Secondary endpoints are need for intervention of AVD detected on screening, and major adverse clinical events during follow-up. RESULTS Prevalence of AVD detected was 13% PAD, 51% CAS and 8%AAA. Symptomatic and Asymptomatic PolyVasBed patients had 11.4- and 8.16-fold increased likelihood for detection of asymptomatic CAS respectively (P<0.0001) relative to the remaining study population. Asymptomatic PolyVasBed patients had 8.2 fold increased likelihood of asymptomatic AAA, P<0.0001, compared to the remaining study population. Likelihood for intervention in Asymptomatic PolyVasBed is OR 5.740 (P=0.044) and Symptomatic PolyVasBed is OR 4.500 (P<0.001). Asymptomatic AAA detected in both symptomatic and asymptomatic vascular disease patients, is the strongest predicting factor of intervention in 18 months follow-up. In Asymptomatic PolyVasBed patients, CAS and AAA have the highest prevalence. CONCLUSIONS Screening for AVD is mandatory prior to any vascular intervention.

Abstract
It is important to understand the onset of periodontal disease in terms of bacterial infection and host factors. Host-bacteria interactions can be elicited in human cultured cells and animal models, but these models provide only limited biological information about human host reactions against bacterial attacks. Development of an in vivo model using human gingival tissue is needed. We established an in vivo model using nu/nu mice and evaluated host defense following bacterial infection in human gingiva. Human gingival samples were collected from periodontitis patients and transplanted in nu/nu mouse subdermis. After 2 weeks, human characteristics were confirmed by positive immunohistochemical reactions for human-specific markers. We used this model to investigate human β-defensin-2 (hBD-2), an antimicrobial peptide that contributes to initial defense against bacterial invasion. Using real-time polymerase chain reaction, in situ hybridization, and immunohistochemistry, we investigated whether hBD-2 expression was induced in human gingiva as a response to Porphyromonas gingivalis as a periodontal pathogen. Two hours after infection with bacteria, we detected increased expression of hBD-2 mRNA, which was localized in the epithelium of human gingiva. Using our in vivo model, we concluded that increased hBD-2 may play an important role in early defense from bacterial infection in human gingival epithelium.

Abstract
Background Porphyromonas gulae are black-pigmented anaerobic bacteria isolated from the gingival sulcus of various animal hosts and are distinct from Porphyromonas gingivalis originating in humans. We previously reported the antigenic similarities of 41-kDa fimbriae between P. gulae ATCC 51700 and P. gingivalis ATCC 33277. In this study, to clarify the presence of another type of fimbriae of P. gulae, we have purified and characterized the secondary fimbrial protein from P. gulae ATCC 51700. Methods The secondary fimbrial protein was purified from P. gulae ATCC 51700 using an immunoaffinity column coupling with antibodies against the 41-kDa fimbrial protein. The expression of fimbriae on the cell surface of P. gulae ATCC 51700 was investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The N-terminal amino acid sequence was determined by an amino acid sequencer system. Results The molecular mass of this protein was approximately 53-kDa, as estimated by SDS-PAGE. The polyclonal antibodies against the 53-kDa protein did not react with the 41-kDa fimbrial protein of P. gulae ATCC 51700. Immunogold electron microscopy revealed that anti-53-kDa fimbrial serum bound to fimbria on the cell surface of P. gulae ATCC 51700. The amino acid sequence of the N-terminal 15 residues of the 53-kDa fimbrial protein showed only 1 of 15 residues identical to the 41-kDa fimbrial protein. Conclusion The 53-kDa fimbriae are different in molecular weight and antigenicity from the 41-kDa fimbrial protein of P. gulae ATCC 51700. These results clearly suggest that the 41-kDa and the 53-kDa fimbriae are distinct types of fimbriae expressed simultaneously by this organism.

Abstract
The association of vascular reactivity between diabetes and periodontal disease has not been clarified. Gingival blood flow was measured by laser Doppler flowmetry for 31 weeks in Wistar rats, Wistar rats orally challenged with Porphyromonas gingivalis (Wistar rats + Porphyromonas gingivalis), Goto-Kakizaki rats, and Goto-Kakizaki rats orally challenged with Porphyromonas gingivalis (Goto-Kakizaki rats + Porphyromonas gingivalis). Effects of alveolar bone resorption on periodontal tissue was enhanced in Wistar rats + Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Goto-Kakizaki rats, with this effect being significantly enhanced by Goto-Kakizaki rats + Porphyromonas gingivalis. Using the L-band electron spin resonance technique, we succeeded in measuring oxidative stress as decay rate constant (K(1) and K(2)) of 3-carbamoyl-2,2,5,5-tetramethylpyrrolidin-1-yloxy in the oral and maxillofacial region of the animal models. The decay rate constant (K(1)) of 3-carbamoyl-2,2,5,5-tetramethylpyrrolidin-1-yloxy was significantly greater in the oral and maxillofacial region of Goto-Kakizaki rats + Porphyromonas gingivalis compared to Wistar rats, Wistar rats + Porphyromonas gingivalis and Goto-Kakizaki rats groups. Gingival reactive hyperemia was attenuated by periodontal disease, and this effect was also remarkable in the diabetes mellitus model. Taken together, we found that vascular endothelial function was decreased in diabetes mellitus and/or periodontal disease animal models due to increasing oxidative stress in the gingival circulation.

Abstract
The antibacterial properties of a polymeric phosphonium salt were studied to determine its suitability as an additive to develop an antibacterial dental resin. The phosphonium salt monomer studied was tri-n-butyl(4-vinylbenzyl)phosphonium chloride (VP), and acrylic acid (AC) and methacryloyloxyethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (MA) were used as controls. The antibacterial activity of these monomers and their corresponding polymers (PVP, PAC, and PMA) against Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) was examined. When incubating S. mutans in a medium containing 10 μmol/mL for 24 hours, the antibacterial activity of PVP against S. mutans was high, while the antibacterial activity of PMA and VP was lower. AC, PAC and PMA exhibited the lowest antibacterial activity. The mechanical properties of the copolymers of methyl methacrylate, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, and VP decreased as VP content increased, and were lower than those of poly(methyl methacrylate).
