Abstract
BACKGROUND The involvement of the placenta in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome is well established, and placental lesions are also similar in these two syndromes. Here we aimed to examine the placental transcriptome and to identify candidate biomarkers in early-onset preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome. METHODS Placental specimens were obtained at C-sections from women with early-onset preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome, and from controls who delivered preterm or at term. After histopathological examination, fresh-frozen placental specimens were used for microarray profiling and validation by qRT-PCR. Differential expression was analysed using log-linear models while adjusting for gestational age. Gene ontology and pathway analyses were used to interpret gene expression changes. Tissue microarrays were constructed from paraffin-embedded placental specimens and immunostained. RESULTS Placental gene expression was gestational age-dependent among preterm and term controls. Out of the 350 differentially expressed genes in preeclampsia and 554 genes in HELLP syndrome, 224 genes (including LEP, CGB, LHB, INHA, SIGLEC6, PAPPA2, TREM1, and FLT1) changed in the same direction (elevated or reduced) in both syndromes. Many of these encode proteins that have been implicated as biomarkers for preeclampsia. Enrichment analyses revealed similar biological processes, cellular compartments and biological pathways enriched in early-onset preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome; however, some processes and pathways (e.g., cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction) were over-represented only in HELLP syndrome. CONCLUSION High-throughput transcriptional and tissue microarray expression profiling revealed that placental transcriptomes of early-onset preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome largely overlap, underlying a potential common cause and pathophysiologic processes in these syndromes. However, gene expression changes may also suggest a more severe placental pathology and pronounced inflammatory response in HELLP syndrome than in preeclampsia.

Abstract
Vaginal microbiome studies provide information that may change the way we define vaginal flora. Normal flora appears dominated by one or two species of Lactobacillus. Significant numbers of healthy women lack appreciable numbers of vaginal lactobacilli. Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is not a single entity, but instead consists of different bacterial communities or profiles of greater microbial diversity than is evident from cultivation-dependent studies. BV should be considered a syndrome of variable composition that results in different symptoms, phenotypical outcomes, and responses to different antibiotic regimens. This information may help to elucidate the link between BV and infection-related adverse outcomes of pregnancy.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Phimosis is perhaps one of the most frequent consultation on pediatric surgery clinics throught the world. The aim of this study is to compare the two procedures more frequently performed in our hospital: dorsal slit and circumcision. PATIENTS Y METHODS: Retrospective study of 1698 patients who were admitted for elective surgical treatment of phimosis between 2003 and 2009. We analyzed age, surgical and anesthethic times, surgical technique and complications. We also did transversal descriptive study through telephonic survey on parents and patients older than 16 years old. RESULTS There was 76.6% of dorsal slit (n = 1300) and 23.4% (n= 398) of circumcisions. Mean age was 7.15 years y mean time of follow up was 42.3 months. Surgical time was significantly higher in circumcision (p < 0.0001). There were 3% (n = 51) of reoperations, no differences between groups. We didn't find differences in postoperative stenosis, but bleeding was more frequent in circumcision group (1.7%; p = 0.03). There were no differences on parental appreciation of postoperative pain, or functional and esthetic satisfaction between groups. CONCLUSIONS We didn't find differences on subjective satisfaction between groups. Even if there are differences n postoperative bleeding, global incidence is very low. In our experience both techniques are valid and safe, so surgeon and parents must jointly make the decision.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Inflammation of the chorioamniotic membranes (histologic chorioamnionitis) is a risk factor for adverse neonatal outcome. Labor has many common features with inflammatory processes; therefore, an important question is whether the frequency of histologic chorioamnionitis in spontaneous labor at term is higher than that of women in labor after induction. This study was conducted to address this question. STUDY DESIGN The frequency of histologic chorioamnionitis was compared between patients who delivered after the spontaneous onset of labor versus those who delivered after induction of labor at term in singleton gestations (> or = 37 weeks). Patients in whom uterotonic agents were used during the latent phase of labor were excluded. RESULTS (1) The overall frequency of histologic chorioamnionitis was 20.2% (107/531); (2) histologic chorioamnionitis was significantly more frequent in women who delivered after the spontaneous onset of labor than in those who underwent induction of labor (24.3% [81/333] versus 13.1% [26/198], p < 0.005). This difference remained significant after adjusting for parity, gestational age at delivery, total duration of labor, the interval from rupture of membranes to delivery and the mode of delivery. CONCLUSION Histologic chorioamnionitis is more common in women who delivered after the spontaneous onset of labor than in those who underwent induction of labor at term.

Abstract
Dendrimers have emerged as multifunctional carriers for targeted drug delivery, gene delivery and imaging. Improving the functional versatility at the surface for carrying multiple conjugation reactions is becoming vital. Typically, generation four polyamidoamine (G4-PAMAM) dendrimers bear approximately 64 symmetrical end groups, often requiring different spacers to conjugate various functional groups (drugs and targeting moities), increasing the synthetic steps. In the present study, a simple one-step synthesis to convert each symmetrical end group of G4-PAMAM dendrimers into two reactive, distinct orthogonal and chemoselective groups is described. A near-complete end-capping of the dendrimers (87-93%) with amino acids results in heterobifunctional G4-PAMAM dendrimers bearing a very high (> or = 110) diverse peripheral end groups (OH+NHBoc, OH+COOMe, SH+NHBoc, and COOH+NHBoc). Postfunctionalization ability of these dendrimers was evaluated. The heterobifunctional groups at the dendrimer periphery could be chemoselectively conjugated to multiple moities such as drugs (indomethacin and dexamethasone) and drugs and imaging agents (dexamethasone and FITC). These conjugations could be achieved in immediate succession without functional group conversions, eliminating the additional elaborate synthetic steps traditionally required to append specific linkers. Furthermore, one of the two functional handles at periphery was used to develop in situ forming hydrogels, whereas the other handle could be used for conjugating the drugs (e.g., dexamethasone). The heterobifunctional dendrimers with either "NH(2) or SH (thiopyridyl protected form)" terminations showed in situ hydrogel formation by cross-linking with N-hydroxysuccinimide or thiol-terminated multiarm polyethylene glycol (20 kDa). The choice of amino acids as versatile linkers would enable biocompatible dendrimer scaffolds for use in drug delivery. Zeta-potential measurements showed drastic lowering of the charge on G4-PAMAM-NH(2) dendrimers by end-capping with amino acids, whereas in the case of neutral G4-PAMAM-OH dendrimers, the charge did not increase or decrease substantially. The in vitro cytotoxicity and hemolysis assay showed that the heterobifunctional dendrimers were noncytotoxic in the 100 ng/mL to 1 mg/mL concentration range. With this study, we demonstrate the development of biocompatible dendrimers bearing multiple orthogonal surface groups, enabling the attachment of drugs, imaging agents, and gel formation using minimal synthetic steps.

Abstract
A one-day point prevalence study to investigate the patterns of antibiotic use was undertaken in 43 latin American (LA) intensive care units. Of 510 patients admitted, 231 received antibiotic treatment on the day of the study (45%); in 125 cases (54%) due to nosocomial-acquired infections. The most frequent infection reported was nosocomial pneumonia (43%). Only in 122 patients (53%) were cultures performed before starting antibiotic treatment. 33% of the isolated microorganisms were enterobacteriaceae (40% extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing), 23% methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and 17% carbapenems-resistant non-fermentative Gram-negatives. The antibiotics most frequently prescribed were carbapenems (99/231, 43%); alone (60/99, 60%) or in combination with vancomycin (39/99, 40%). "Restricted" antibiotics (carbapenems, vancomycin, piperacillin-tazobactam, broad-spectrum cephalosporins, tigecycline, polymixins and linezolid) were most frequently indicated in severely ill patients (APACHE II score at admission >15, p=0.0007 and, SOFA score at the beginning of the antibiotic treatment >3, p=0.0000). Only 36% of antibiotic treatments were cultured-directed.Our findings help explain the high rates of multidrug-resistant pathogens in LA settings (i.e. ESBL-producing Gram-negatives) and the severity of the registered patients illnesses.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To validate a new sonographic technique for the display and measurement of fetal iliac crest angle (ICA), and to determine the relative contribution of standardized fetal pelvic measurements for estimating risk of Down syndrome during the second trimester of pregnancy. METHODS Three-dimensional ultrasonography of the fetal pelvis was performed during a second-trimester scan for genetic amniocentesis. A coronal view of the 'virtual pelvis' was obtained by applying a maximum intensity projection algorithm to visualize both iliac wings. Two different ICAs were measured from a coronal projection of the fetal pelvis (ICA-coronal 1 and ICA-coronal 2); the latter approach relied on using ischial tuberosities as reference landmarks. Next, a coronal projection of the fetal pelvis was rotated to demonstrate a rendered view of the axial fetal pelvis. Axial inner (ICA-inner), middle (ICA-middle) and outer (ICA-outer) ICAs were measured. The maximum anterior iliac distance measurement was defined as the widest separation between the most anterior points of the rendered iliac crests. The reproducibility of each ICA method was analyzed using Bland-Altman statistics. Simple and multiple logistic regression analysis determined the relative contribution of each parameter as a prenatal predictor of Down syndrome. RESULTS Ninety-four normal fetuses and 19 fetuses with Down syndrome were examined. The ICA-middle and ICA-coronal 2 parameters were the most reproducible angle measurements. The mean +/- SD ICA-middle measurement for fetuses with Down syndrome was significantly greater than that for normal subjects (94.5 +/- 9.8 degrees vs. 83.1 +/- 6.5 degrees ; P < 0.001). The mean +/- SD ICA-coronal 2 angle measurement for fetuses with Down syndrome was slightly greater than that for normal subjects (57.9 +/- 5.5 degrees vs. 51.9 +/- 7.1 degrees ; P = 0.0014). A multiple logistic regression model including ICA-middle and ICA-coronal 2 provided a predictive ability of 88.1% based on the area under the receiver-operating characteristics curve. This combination had a sensitivity of 94.4% for a false-positive rate of 5% in the detection of Down syndrome. CONCLUSIONS Standardized iliac crest measurements of the fetal pelvis can be used to identify some fetuses at risk for trisomy 21 during the second trimester of pregnancy.

Abstract
Taurine, 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid, is present at high concentrations in many invertebrate and vertebrate systems and has several biological functions. In addition, it has been related to a neuroprotective role against several diseases such as epilepsy. In the present work, we treated mice with taurine and examined its effects on the expression of proteins in the hippocampus associated with calcium regulation. Taurine treatment alters the presence of calbindin-D28k, calretinin, and parvalbumin in the brain, mainly in the hippocampus. It also reduced CaMKII activity, indicating that taurine could alter calcium signaling pathways. However, the activity of calpain, a protease related to apoptosis induced by calcium signalling, did not change. The concentration of taurine in the hippocampus was also unaffected by the treatment. These results provide new insight into the role of taurine in calcium homeostasis.

Abstract
Statins are prescribed to reduce posttransplant dyslipidemia, which is frequent among kidney graft recipients. Their efficacy to reduce cholesterol levels has been accompanied by pleiotropic effects. Proteomics is the study of the expressed complement of proteins in tissues or biological fluids. It includes the identification of changes in proteins that occur in various states, eg, after drug administration. Our study objectives were: (1) to analyze the effect of atorvastatin (10 mg/d) on lipid profile, renal function, proteinuria, and inflammation parameters, such as C-reactive protein (CRP), and (2) to use proteomics to ascertain whether this treatment modified the patients' urinary peptide profiles seeking to understand the molecular actions of the drug. Urinary peptide profiles, lipids, renal function parameters (creatinine clearance), proteinuria, and CRP were determined in 39 patients at baseline and at 12 weeks after atorvastatin treatment (10 mg/d). The peptide fraction of each sample acquired using magnetic beads was analyzed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Our results showed that treatment with atorvastatin produced a significant reduction in lipid profile, but did not modify renal function (creatinine clearance), proteinuria, or CRP. The proteomic study showed that statin treatment did not produce significant changes in the urinary peptidome, although there was a tendency for some peptides to increase or decrease after the treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The main goal was to develop a reproducible method for estimating the diffusion of water in human fetal lung tissue using diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI). A secondary objective was to determine the relationship of the apparent diffusion coefficients (ADCs) in the fetal lung to menstrual age and total lung volume. METHODS Normal pregnant volunteers were scanned on a 1.5-Tesla (T) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system. The MRI system was equipped with 40-mT/m gradients (slew rate 200 T/m/s, rise time 0.2 ms). A six-channel body array coil was used for signal reception. Single-shot DWI utilized TE/TR 125/3400 ms, slice thickness 4 mm, field of view 280 mm x 280 mm, interslice gap 0.8 mm and a matrix of 128 x 128. The voxel size was 2.5 mm x 2.5 mm x 4.0 mm. Two b-values (0 and 1000) were chosen along three orthogonal directions. ADC maps were created using assigned b-values. Simple linear regression was performed with Pearson correlation coefficient. Interexaminer and intraexaminer bias, and 95% limits of agreement (LOA) were determined using Bland-Altman plots. RESULTS Forty-seven scans were performed at a mean +/- SD of 29.2 +/- 4.5 weeks. The median coefficient of variation for ADC was 5.6% (interquartile range, 4.0-8.1%). No differences in ADC values were found between right and left lungs. Normally distributed ADC measurements were not significantly correlated with either total lung volume (r(2) = 0.0001, P = 0.94) or menstrual age (r(2) = 0.003, P = 0.70). The mean ADC value was 1.75 (95% CI, 1.63-1.86). Mean +/- SD intraexaminer bias was -0.15 +/- 2.3 (95% LOA, -4.7 to + 4.4) and interexaminer bias was 2.2 +/- 3.5 (95% LOA, -4.7 to + 9.1). CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that ADC measurements of the fetal lung are reproducible between blinded examiners and are independent of menstrual age, as well as lung volume.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The main goal of this study was to determine the accuracy and precision of new fetal weight estimation models, based on fractional limb volume and conventional two-dimensional (2D) sonographic measurements during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. METHODS A prospective cross-sectional study of 271 fetuses was performed using three-dimensional ultrasonography to extract standard measurements-biparietal diameter (BPD), abdominal circumference (AC) and femoral diaphysis length (FDL)-plus fractional arm volume (AVol) and fractional thigh volume (TVol) within 4 days of delivery. Weighted multiple linear regression analysis was used to develop 'modified Hadlock' models and new models using transformed predictors that included soft tissue parameters for estimating birth weight. Estimated and observed birth weights were compared using mean percent difference (systematic weight estimation error) and the SD of the percent differences (random weight estimation error). The proportion of newborns with estimated birth weight within 5 or 10% of actual birth weight were compared using McNemar's test. RESULTS Birth weights in the study group ranged from 235 to 5790 g, with equal proportions of male and female infants. Six new fetal weight estimation models were compared with the results for modified Hadlock models with sample-specific coefficients. All the new models were very accurate, with mean percent differences that were not significantly different from zero. Model 3 (which used the natural logarithms of BPD, AC and AVol) and Model 6 (which used the natural logarithms of BPD, AC and TVol) provided the most precise weight estimations (random error = 6.6% of actual birth weight) as compared with 8.5% for the best original Hadlock model and 7.6% for a modified Hadlock model using sample-specific coefficients. Model 5 (which used the natural logarithms of AC and TVol) classified an additional 9.1% and 8.3% of the fetuses within 5% and 10% of actual birth weight and Model 6 classified an additional 7.3% and 4.1% of infants within 5% and 10% of actual birth weight. CONCLUSION The precision of fetal weight estimation can be improved by adding fractional limb volume measurements to conventional 2D biometry. New models that consider fractional limb volume may offer novel insight into the contribution of soft tissue development to weight estimation.

Abstract
Studies using first trimester trophoblast cells may be limited by the inability to obtain patient samples and/or adequate cell numbers. First trimester trophoblast cell lines have been generated by SV40 transformation or similar methods, however, this approach is known to induce phenotypic and karyotypic abnormalities. The introduction of telomerase has been proposed to be a viable alternative for the immortalization of primary human cells. To investigate whether telomerase-induced immortalization might be a more feasible approach for the generation of first trimester trophoblast cell lines, we isolated primary trophoblast cells from a 7-week normal placenta and infected the cells with human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT), the catalytic subunit of telomerase. Although this hTERT-infected first trimester trophoblast cell line, which we have named Swan 71, has been propagated for more than 100 passages, it still has attributes that are characteristic of primary first trimester trophoblast cells. The Swan 71 cells are positive for the expression of cytokeratin 7, vimentin and HLA-G, but do not express CD45, CD68 or the Fibroblast Specific Antigen (FSA), CD90/Thy-1. In addition, we also demonstrated that the Swan 71 cells secrete fetal fibronectin (FFN) as well as low levels of human Chorionic Gonadotrophin (hCG). Moreover, the Swan 71 cells exhibit a cytokine and growth factor profile that is similar to primary trophoblast cells and are resistant to Fas, but not TNF-alpha-induced apoptosis. This suggests that the Swan 71 cells may represent a valuable model for future in vitro trophoblast studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Recent studies have shown that in radiated and bone marrow transplanted mice, bone marrow-derived cells (BMDCs) fuse with Purkinje neurons resulting in the formation of binucleated heterokaryons. Here we investigated whether radiation plays a role in the formation of Purkinje neuron heterokaryons. METHODS Fused cells were identified by reporter gene expression in mice, carrying floxed LacZ (R26R-LacZ) in all cells and Cre in hematopoietic-derived cells. Cell fusion was confirmed by the presence of two nuclei. The number of fused Purkinje neurons was studied in: 1) whole-body radiated newborn and adult R26R-LacZ mice, transplanted with bone marrow cells expressing Cre; 2) in newborn and adult mice that received different doses of radiation to the head; and 3) in radiated and non-radiated newborns treated with a myeloablative drug before bone marrow transplantation. RESULTS In neonatal, but not in adult cerebelleum, radiation-in a dose-dependent manner-induces a dramatic increase in the number of fused Purkinje neurons. INTERPRETATION Increase recruitment of BMDCs into the cerebellum, radiation damage to cerebellar cells, or both, increase the formation of fused Purkinje cells. BMDC-Purkinje heterokaryons formation may reflect an endogeneous neuronal repair mechanism, or it could be a by-product of radiation-induced inflammation. In either case, fused Purkinje neurons increase following radiation damage in the developing cerebellum. The above observations reveal a novel consequence of head radiation in neonatal rodents. It will be interesting to determine if similar increase in the number of binucleated Purkinje neurons, occurs in children that receive radiation during early development. Ann Neurol 2009;66:100-109.

Abstract
Hepcidin is a hormone that regulates the intestinal absorption of iron and its release from the reticuloendothelium. The objective of this study was to determine the use of hepcidin for kidney disease patients with a diagnosis of iron deficiency pretransplantation by evaluating the soluble transferrin receptor (sRTfR-F) index as a marker for iron deficiency. This transverse study of 164 pretransplant patients determined hematometry and conventional markers related to iron metabolism, as well as soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR), its index (sTfR-F), and serum hepcidin concentrations. The following markers of inflammation (MIF) were also assessed C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), soluble IL-2 receptor (sIL-2R), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), and soluble TNF-alpha receptor (s-TNF-alphaR). Among the studied patients, 11.4% showed an absolute iron deficiency with ferritin concentrations < 100 ng/mL, a mean hepcidin value of 120.7 +/- 38.5 ng/mL, and a mean sTfR-F value of 1.03 +/- 0.3; 18.2% of patients displayed a ferritin > 800 ng/mL with mean hepcidin and sTfR-F values of 147.5 +/- 36.6 ng/mL and 0.54 +/- 0.2, respectively. Iron deficiency was not observed in the other patients when considering the conventional markers: ferritin > 100 ng/mL and transferrin saturation (ST) > 20%. However, this study showed that determination of hepcidin concentrations together with M/F improved the identification of iron deficiency in pretransplant patients by 21.6%.

Abstract
Dendrimers are emerging as potential intracellular drug delivery vehicles. Understanding and improving the cellular efficacy of dendrimer-drug conjugates, can lead to significant in vivo benefits. This study explores efficacy of anionic polyamidoamine (PAMAM-COOH) dendrimer-N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) conjugates for applications in neuroinflammation. The anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effects of PAMAM-(COOH)(46)-(NAC)(18) conjugate is evaluated on microglial cells in vitro. Cell entry and localization of PAMAM-(COOH)(62)-(FITC)(2) conjugate in BV-2 microglial cells were assessed using flow cytometry and confocal microscopy. ELISA assays were used to evaluate markers of oxidative stress (ROS, NO) and inflammation (TNF-alpha) after stimulation of microglial cells with lipopolysaccharides (LPS), following treatment with increasing doses of free N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) or PAMAM-(COOH)(46)-(NAC)(18) conjugate containing an equivalent molar concentration of NAC. Flow cytometry and confocal microscopy demonstrated the PAMAM-(COOH)(62)-(FITC)(2) conjugate entered BV-2 cells rapidly with significant increase in fluorescence within 15 min and localized mostly in the cytoplasm. PAMAM-(COOH)(46)-(NAC)(18) conjugate was non-toxic, and significantly reduced ROS, NO and TNF-alpha release by activated microglial cells after 24 h and 72 h stimulation of LPS following 3h pre-treatment when compared to the same concentration of free NAC (P<0.05 or P<0.01). Anionic PAMAM dendrimer-NAC conjugate was synthesized with a glutathione sensitive linker for intracellular release. The non-toxic conjugate is a more effective anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory agent when compared to free NAC in vitro. The conjugate showed significant efficacy even at the lowest dose (0.5mM NAC), where the activity was comparable or better than that of free drug at 8mM (16x higher dosage). The improved efficacy of the conjugate, when combined with the intrinsic neuroinflammation-targeting ability of the PAMAM dendrimers, may provide new opportunities for in vivo applications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) held a workshop on 27-28 July 2000 to bring together investigators working in the field of fetomaternal cellular and nucleic acid trafficking with the hope that this would stimulate further research into the biological implications of such phenomena. METHODS Invited speakers from all over the world presented their latest (unpublished) data. The conference proceedings were delayed until the present time to allow independent publication of the primary data. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS Bi-directional fetomaternal trafficking of cells and nucleic acids during pregnancy is now well established, through the use of molecular techniques including conventional and real-time polymerase chain reaction, as well as fluorescence in situ hybridization. In addition, human leukocyte antigen (HLA) is deposited in the skin of pregnant women. Fetomaternal trafficking is increased in some complications of pregnancy, such as pre-eclampsia, polyhydramnios, polymorphic eruption of pregnancy, preterm labor and specific fetal chromosome aneuploidies. Maternal cells and nucleic acids have been documented in umbilical cord blood and in autopsy tissue of non-transfused neonates. Fetal cells persist postpartum and may be associated with the development of disorders such as scleroderma, lichen planus, lupus and thyroid disease. The extent of fetomaternal trafficking may be affected by three generational HLA relationships. Thus, the consequences of pregnancy extend beyond gestation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The causes of fetal death are largely unknown. CD4 T cells have been classified according to the expression of the CD45 isoforms into 'naive-like' T cells (CD45RA) and 'memory-like' T cells (CD45RO). An increase in the percentage of the CD45RO has been interpreted as indicating prior antigenic exposure of the host and, in newborns, evidence of infection. The purpose of this study was to determine whether unexplained fetal death was associated with a change in the proportion of 'naive-like' and 'memory-like T cells' in the maternal blood, as determined by the CD45 isoforms on the surface of CD4+ lymphocytes. STUDY DESIGN A prospective study was conducted to compare the CD45 sub-population of lymphocytes in patients with intrauterine fetal death (n = 26) and normal pregnancy (n = 89). The percentages of CD45RA+, CD45RO+ and CD45RA+/CD45RO+ on CD4+ T lymphocytes were determined in maternal blood using flow cytometry and monoclonal antibodies. Results were reported as a percentage of CD4+ lymphocytes. Non-parametric statistics were used for analysis. A p value of < 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS Patients with intrauterine fetal death had a higher percentage of CD45RO+ CD4+ T lymphocytes than normal pregnant women (fetal death: median 57.7%, range 35.4-78.6 vs. normal pregnancy: median 49.9%, range 19.1-86.8; p = 0.004). Fetal death was associated with a lower median percentage of CD45RA+ CD4+ lymphocytes than in normal pregnant women (fetal death: median 32.3%, range 15.3-58.0 vs. normal pregnancy: median 40.2%, range 11.2-67.3; p = 0.01). There was no significant difference in the percentage of cells with dual expression (CD45RA+/CD45RO+) between the study groups. CONCLUSION Prior exposure to microbial products (bacterial or viral) or other unidentified antigens may result in a shift of the sub-population of 'naive-like' T cells to 'memory-like' T cells in mothers with unexplained fetal death.

Abstract
An experimental model based on kainic acid (KA) injections replicates many phenomenological features of human temporal lobe epilepsy, the most common type of epilepsy in adults. Taurine, 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid, present in high concentrations in many invertebrate and vertebrate systems, is believed to serve several important biological functions. In addition, it is believed to have a neuroprotective role against several diseases. In the present study, an experimental mouse model based on taurine pretreatment prior to KA administration has been improved to study whether taurine has a neuroprotective effect against KA-induced behavior and cell damage. Under different treatments tested, taurine's most neuroprotective effects were observed with intraperitoneal taurine injection (150 mg/kg dosage) 12 hr before KA administration. Thus, a reduction in or total absence of seizures, together with a reduction in or even disappearance of cellular and molecular KA-derived effects, was detected in mice pretreated with taurine compared with those treated only with KA. Moreover, the use of tritiated taurine revealed taurine entry into the brain, suggesting possible changes in intracellular:extracellular taurine ratios and the triggering of pathways related to neuroprotective effects.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The main goal was to investigate the relationship between prenatal sonographic parameters and birth weight in predicting neonatal body composition. METHODS Standard fetal biometry and soft tissue parameters were assessed prospectively in third-trimester pregnancies using three-dimensional ultrasonography. Growth parameters included biparietal diameter (BPD), head circumference (HC), abdominal circumference (AC), mid-thigh circumference and femoral diaphysis length (FDL). Soft tissue parameters included fractional arm volume (AVol) and fractional thigh volume (TVol) that were derived from 50% of the humeral or femoral diaphysis lengths, respectively. Percentage of neonatal body fat (%BF) was determined within 48 h of delivery using a pediatric air displacement plethysmography system based on principles of whole-body densitometry. Correlation and stepwise multiple linear regression analyses were performed with potential prenatal predictors and %BF as the outcome variable. RESULTS Eighty-seven neonates were studied with a mean +/- SD %BF of 10.6 +/- 4.6%. TVol had the greatest correlation with newborn %BF of all single-parameter models. This parameter alone explained 46.1% of the variability in %BF and the best stepwise multiple linear regression model was: %BF = 0.129 (TVol) - 1.03933 (P < 0.001). Birth weight similarly explained 44.7% of the variation in %BF. AC and estimated fetal weight (EFW) accounted for only 24.8% and 30.4% of the variance in %BF, respectively. Skeletal growth parameters, such as FDL (14.2%), HC (7.9%) and BPD (4.0%), contributed the least towards explaining the variance in %BF. CONCLUSIONS During the late third trimester of pregnancy %BF is most highly correlated with TVol. Similar to actual birth weight, this soft tissue parameter accounts for a significant improvement in explaining the variation in neonatal %BF compared with fetal AC or EFW alone.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The main goals were to provide normal reference ranges for fractional limb volume as a new index of generalized fetal nutritional status, to evaluate the reproducibility of fractional fetal limb volume measurements during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, and to demonstrate technical considerations for this technique. METHODS This was a prospective, cross-sectional study of gravid women during mid to late pregnancy. Fractional limb volumes were based on either 50% of humeral or femoral diaphysis length. Each partial volume was subdivided into five equidistant slices that were centered along the mid-arm or mid-thigh. Slices were traced manually to obtain fractional arm (AVol) or fractional thigh (TVol) volume. Reproducibility studies were performed, using Bland-Altman plots, to assess blinded interobserver and intraobserver measurement bias and agreement. Selected images were chosen to demonstrate technical factors for the acquisition and analysis of these parameters. Reference charts were established to describe normal ranges for AVol and TVol. RESULTS Three hundred and eighty-seven subjects were scanned to include 380 AVol (range, 1.1-68.3 mL) and 378 TVol (range 2.0-163.2 mL) measurements between 18.0 and 42.1 weeks' menstrual age. No gender differences were found in these soft tissue measurements (AVol, P = 0.90; TVol, P = 0.91; Mann-Whitney test). Intraobserver mean bias +/- SD and 95% limits of agreement (LOA) for fractional limb volumes were: 2.2 +/- 4.2% (95% LOA, - 6.0 to 10.5%) for AVol and 2.0 +/- 4.2% (95% LOA, - 6.3 to 10.3%) for TVol. Interobserver bias and agreement were - 1.9 +/- 4.9% (95% LOA, - 11.6 to 7.8%) for AVol and - 2.0 +/- 5.4% (95% LOA, - 12.5 to 8.6%) for TVol. Technical factors were related to image optimization, transducer pressure, fetal movement, soft tissue compression and amniotic fluid volume. CONCLUSIONS Fractional limb volume assessment may improve the detection and monitoring of malnourished fetuses because this soft tissue parameter can be obtained quickly and reproducibly during mid to late pregnancy. Careful attention should be placed on technical factors that can potentially affect optimal acquisition and analysis of these volume measurements.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Adiponectin is an anti-diabetic, anti-atherogenic, anti-inflammatory, and angiogenic adipokine that circulates in oligomeric complexes including: low molecular weight (LMW) trimers, medium molecular weight (MMW) hexamers, and high molecular weight (HMW) isoforms. The aim of this study was to determine whether there are changes in adiponectin multimers in pregnancy and as a function of maternal weight. STUDY DESIGN In this cross-sectional study, plasma concentrations of total, HMW, MMW, and LMW adiponectin were determined in women included in three groups: (1) normal pregnant women of normal body mass index (BMI) (n = 466), (2) overweight pregnant women (BMI >or=25; n = 257), and (3) non-pregnant women of normal weight (n = 40). Blood samples were collected once from each woman between 11 and 42 weeks of gestation. Plasma adiponectin multimer concentrations were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Non-parametric statistics were used for analysis. RESULTS (1) The median HMW adiponectin concentration and the median HMW/total adiponectin ratio were significantly higher, and the median LMW adiponectin concentration was significantly lower in pregnant women than in non-pregnant women. (2) Among pregnant women, the median plasma concentration of total, HMW, and MMW adiponectin was significantly higher in normal weight women than in overweight patients. (3) Maternal HMW was the most prevalent adiponectin multimer regardless of gestational age or BMI status. (4) There were no significant differences in the median concentration of total, MMW, and LMW adiponectin and their relative distribution with advancing gestation. CONCLUSION Human pregnancy is characterized by quantitative and qualitative changes in adiponectin multimers, especially the most active isoform, HMW adiponectin.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this paper is to describe the frequency and characteristics of uveitis associated with juvenile idiopathic arthritis at a tertiary referral centre in Spain. METHODS Review of clinical records. 205 children diagnosed with chronic juvenile arthritis over the last 15 years, of whom 26 presented anterior uveitis. Patients were classified according to their pattern of evolution, the time the uveitis was diagnosed with respect to the onset of arthritis, and the severity of uveitis at diagnosis. RESULTS The prevalence of uveitis was 12.7%. Of the patients affected with uveitis 71% were girls. The average age at which the arthritis was diagnosed was significantly earlier in the group of patients who developed uveitis (4.06 years). No differences were observed in the incidence of uveitis in girls and boys, nor in pauci/polyarticular affectation. ANA positivity was found in 84.6% of the uveitis-affected patients, this being significantly different to the ANA- group. The average age at which uveitis was diagnosed is 5.87 years. 48.1% of uveitis patients develop uveitis within 12 months of the onset of arthritis. This group presented more complications during the evolution of the condition. A total of 84.7% of the uveitis-affected patients presented with a final visual acuity of >0.5 during the observation period. CONCLUSIONS In our study, the development of uveitis was significantly associated with an earlier age of diagnosis of the arthritis and with the presence of ANA positivity. No differences were observed between boys and girls, or between pauci and polyarticular groups. A greater prevalence of complications was observed in cases presenting with a shorter time interval between the diagnosis of arthritis and uveitis and in those that presented with complications on diagnosis.

Abstract
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are involved in the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression during development. This study was performed to determine gestational age-dependent changes in miRNA expression in the chorioamniotic membranes and to assess the significance of miRNAs in human pregnancy and parturition. The expression profile of 455 miRNAs was compared between patients at term without labour (TNL: n = 10), in labour (TL: n = 10), and preterm labour (PTL: n = 10) using microarrays. A total of 39 miRNAs were differentially expressed between term and preterm cases, of which 31 (79.5%) were down-regulated at term. Expression of ten miRNAs, including miR-338, differentially expressed between PTL and TL groups was decreased at term. Computational analyses using miRBase Targets have identified PLA2G4B, a phospholipase implicated in parturition, as a putative target of miR-338. Inhibition of endogenous miR-338 with anti-miR-338 increased the mRNA and protein expression of PLA2G4B in decidual cells. Luciferase assay with reporter constructs confirmed that the suppression of PLA2G4B occurs through binding of miR-338 to the 3UTR of PLA2G4B. Interestingly, the expression of Dicer, a key miRNA-processing enzyme, was markedly decreased at term, particularly with labour in the chorioamniotic membranes. Collectively, the novel findings reported herein strongly suggest that post-transcriptional regulation of genes by miRNAs, coupled with the changes of miRNA processing machinery in the chorioamniotic membranes, plays a role in pregnancy and parturition. Furthermore, the expression level of Dicer in the chorioamniotic membranes dichotomizes pathological preterm labour and physiological spontaneous labour at term.

Abstract
Mares inseminated with frozen–thawed sperm have reduced pregnancy rates compared with mares inseminated with fresh sperm. Processing mammalian sperm for cryopreservation increases the concentration of free radicals and induces oxidative stress, which can result in DNA damage and may lead to lower fertility. The objective of this experiment was to examine the effects of several plant antioxidant extracts on stallion sperm post-thaw motility and DNA quality. Single ejaculates were collected from 4 stallions and the concentration of sperm cells in each ejaculate was determined spectrophotometrically. Semen was centrifuged at 300g for 10 min at room temperature and seminal plasma was removed. Sperm pellets were resuspended to a final concentration of 200 × 106 cells mL–1 in E-Z Freezin LE (ARS, Chino, CA) extender (control) or extender containing 1 of 3 plant extracts (3% v/v) from 2 different commercial sources. Extended sperm cells were loaded into 0.5-mL straws and frozen over liquid nitrogen vapor for 10 min. Straws were then plunged into liquid nitrogen and stored until further evaluation. Motility and velocity parameters were determined at 0, 30, and 60 min post-thaw using a computer-assisted sperm analyzer. DNA fragmentation was determined immediately after thawing using a single-cell gel electrophoresis (Comet) assay. Motility (total and progressive) and velocity parameters of sperm cells did not differ between controls and plant extract treatments (P > 0.05). However, total Comet length and tail length were reduced in sperm cells stored in extender containing each plant extract (P < 0.05). Tail and olive moment tended to be reduced (P < 0.10) in sperm cells stored in plant extracts. In conclusion, sperm cells stored in plant extracts had reduced post-thaw DNA damage. The addition of plant extracts to commercial freezing extenders may be a practical method for improving sperm quality.

Abstract
The placental-decidual interaction through invading trophoblasts determines whether a physiological transformation of the uterine spiral arteries is established or not. Trophoblast-orchestrated artery remodeling is central to normal placentation. Dysregulated uteroplacental interaction and vascular remodeling are thought to be associated with the molecular events underlying the pathology of late pregnancy anomalies including preeclampsia. Although the exact gestational age at which trophoblast invasion ceases is not known, it remains unclear whether late pregnancy trophoblasts retain the ability to transform the uterine arteries. Here, we have developed a dual cell, in vitro culture system that mimics the vascular remodeling events during normal pregnancy. We demonstrate that first and third trimester trophoblasts respond differentially to interactive signals from endothelial cells when cultured on matrigel. Term primary trophoblasts or immortalized third trimester extravillous TCL1 trophoblasts not only fail to respond to signals from endothelial cells but also inhibit endothelial cell tube formation. In contrast, HTR8 cells, representing a first trimester trophoblast cell line with invasive properties, undergo spontaneous migration and synchronize with the endothelial cells in a capillary network. This disparity in behavior was confirmed in vivo using a matrigel plug assay. Poor expression of VEGF C and VEGF receptors coupled with high E-cadherin expression by term primary trophoblasts and TCL1 cells contributed to their restricted interactive and migratory properties. We further show that the kinase activity of VEGF R2 is essential for proactive crosstalk by HTR8 cells. This unique behavior of first trimester trophoblasts in the presence of endothelial cells offers a potential approach to study cell-cell interactions and to decipher modulatory components in the serum samples from adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Abstract
Heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor (HBEGF) induces trophoblast extravillous differentiation and prevents apoptosis. These functions are compromised in preeclampsia. Because HBEGF is downregulated in placentas delivered by women with preeclampsia, we have examined its expression and cytoprotective activity in term villous explants. Chorionic villous explants prepared from non-pathological placentas collected by cesarean section at term were cultured at either 20% or 2% O2 and treated with the HBEGF antagonist CRM197 or recombinant HBEGF. Paraffin sections were assayed for trophoblast death, proliferation and HBEGF expression using the TUNEL method, immunohistochemistry for nuclear Ki67 expression and semi-quantitative immunohistochemistry with image analysis, respectively. Trophoblast cell death was increased significantly after 8h of culture with CRM197 or by culture for 2h at 2% O2. Exogenous HBEGF prevented cell death due to hypoxia. Proliferative capacity was not affected by culture at either 20% or 2% O2. Contrary to first trimester placenta, term trophoblasts do not elevate HBEGF expression in response to hypoxia. However, low endogenous levels of HBEGF are required to maintain survival. Therefore, HBEGF-mediated signaling significantly reduces trophoblast cell death at term and its deficiency in preeclampsia could negatively impact trophoblast survival.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To develop individualized growth assessment (IGA) standards for upper (ThC(u)) and middle (ThC(m)) fetal thigh circumferences using three-dimensional ultrasonography. METHODS A prospective, longitudinal sonographic study of 30 fetuses was performed beginning at 18 weeks' menstrual age. Second-trimester sonographic parameters were measured from three-dimensional volume data to establish IGA standards. Normal infant growth outcomes were confirmed using modified Neonatal Growth Assessment Scores (m(3)NGAS(51)). ThC(u) and ThC(m) were studied in more detail. Rossavik growth model specification procedures, based on the slopes of the second-trimester growth curves, were developed for both ThC(u) and ThC(m). Third-trimester growth trajectories and birth measurements were subsequently predicted for these parameters. Percentage deviations during the third trimester and percentage differences at actual birth age were used to compare observed and predicted measurements. The 95% ranges for Growth Potential Realization Index (GPRI) values for both types of thigh circumference were determined. Values for m(3)NGAS(51) using GPRI(ThC(u)), GPRI(ThC(m)) and GPRI(ThC(o)) (original method) were compared. RESULTS The 30 newborns had no postnatal evidence of abnormal growth. Two examiners demonstrated a satisfactory measurement bias of mean +/- SD 2.1 +/- 3.6 (95% limits of agreement,-4.9 to 9.1)% for ThC(m) and 3.3 +/- 4.1 (95% limits of agreement,-4.8 to 11.4)% for ThC(u). Rossavik functions fitted parameter trajectories well, with mean R(2) values of 99.5 +/- 0.4% for ThC(u) and 99.6 +/- 0.3% for ThC(m). By fixing coefficients k at their mean values, their respective fits did not change, and the variabilities of coefficients c and s were significantly reduced. For ThC(u), coefficient c was significantly related to the second-trimester slope (R(2)=98.6%), as was s to c(R(2)=91.0%). For ThC(m), coefficient c was significantly related to the second-trimester slope (R(2)=98.6%), as was s to c(R(2)=85.6%). Third-trimester growth trajectories, derived from second-trimester slopes for individual fetuses, had third-trimester deviations of 0.07 +/- 3.7% for ThC(u) and-0.04 +/- 3.7% for ThC(m). Percentage differences at birth age were 16.8 +/- 10.2% for ThC(u) and 8.9 +/- 9.5% for ThC(m). With correction for systematic overestimations, the mean GPRI values were 103.7 (95% range, 90-121)% for ThC(u) and 101.6 (95% range, 88-118)% for ThC(m). Corresponding mean +/- SD m(3)NGAS(51) values, using GPRI(ThC(u)), GPRI(ThC(m)) and GPRI(ThC(o)), were 203 +/- 11%, 201 +/- 10% and 200 +/- 9%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Fetal thigh circumference can be measured reliably and evaluated using standard IGA methods. Both ThC(u) and ThC(m) give similar results in the third trimester but neonatal thigh circumference predictions are improved by using ThC(m). Corresponding GPRI(ThC(m)) values are closer to the ideal value of 100% and can be used in m(3)NGAS(51) calculations for assessment of neonatal growth outcome.

Abstract
AIMS The nature of villitis of unknown aetiology (VUE) is intriguing in terms of its aetiology, origin of inflammatory cells and immunophenotype of T cells involved. The aim was to determine the origin of macrophages and the immunophenotype of T lymphocytes in VUE associated with various complications of pregnancy. METHODS AND RESULTS Placentas with VUE (n = 45) were studied by chromogenic in-situ hybridization (CISH) for Y chromosome (DYZ1) and immunohistochemistry for CD14, CD68, Ki67 (n = 10; all from male neonates) and a panel of T-cell antigens (CD3, CD4 and CD8) (n = 35). All of the placentas from male neonates showed CISH+ signals from Y chromosomes in the majority of macrophages, but not in lymphocytes, indicating that the macrophages were of fetal origin. Many macrophages of the affected chorionic villi were Ki67+, suggesting that they are hyperplastic Hofbauer cells. Among the lymphocytes, CD8+ T cells outnumbered CD4+ T cells in all placentas with different obstetrical conditions. CONCLUSIONS We define primary components of VUE as maternal CD8+ T cells and hyperplastic Hofbauer cells. We propose that VUE is a unique inflammatory reaction where the leucocytes from two hosts are key partners, analogous to either allograft rejection or graft-versus-host disease.

OBJECTIVE Placental growth hormone (PGH) is produced by trophoblast. This hormone becomes detectable in maternal serum during the first trimester of pregnancy. Its concentration increases as term approaches and becomes undetectable within one hour of delivery. PGH has important biological properties, including somatogenic (growth promotion), lactogenic, and lipolytic activity. Recently, PGH has been detected in amniotic fluid (AF) of midtrimester pregnancies. The purpose of this study was to determine whether PGH concentrations in AF change with advancing gestational age and in labor at term. DESIGN AF was assayed for PGH concentrations in samples obtained from patients undergoing genetic amniocentesis between 14 and 18 weeks of gestation (n=67), normal patients at term not in labor (n=24), and pregnant women at term in labor (n=51). PGH concentrations were determined by ELISA. Non-parametric statistics were used for analysis. RESULTS (1) PGH was detected in all AF samples; (2) patients in the midtrimester had a higher median concentration of PGH in AF than those at term (midtrimester: median: 3140.5 pg/ml; range: 1124.2-13886.5 vs. term: median: 2021.1pg/ml; range: 181.6-8640.8; p<0.01); (3) there was no difference in the median concentration of PGH between women at term, not in labor, and those in labor (term not in labor: median: 2113.4pg/ml; range: 449.3-8640.8 vs. term in labor: median: 2004.1pg/ml; range: 181.6-8531.5; p=0.73). CONCLUSIONS (1) PGH is detectable in AF at both mid- and third trimesters; (2) the median AF concentration of PGH is significantly lower at term when compared to the second trimester; (3) labor at term is not associated with changes in the AF concentration of PGH. The role of this unique placental hormone now found in the fetal compartment requires further investigation.

Abstract
The elastocaloric effect in the vicinity of the martensitic transition of a Cu-Zn-Al single crystal has been studied by inducing the transition by strain or stress measurements. While transition trajectories show significant differences, the entropy change associated with the whole transformation (DeltaS_(t)) is coincident in both kinds of experiments since entropy production is small compared to DeltaS_(t). The values agree with estimations based on the Clausius-Clapeyron equation. The possibility of using these materials for mechanical refrigeration is also discussed.

Abstract
Understanding the mechanisms of disease responsible for the syndrome of preeclampsia as well as early risk assessment is still a major challenge. The concentrations of circulating proteins in maternal blood such as placental growth factor, soluble vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-1 and soluble endoglin are altered weeks before the onset of clinical symptoms of the syndrome. Recently, other proteins in maternal serum, such as activin A, inhibin A, PAPP-A, and PP13 have been suggested to be of value in first trimester risk assessment. Since preeclampsia is a syndrome, it seems unlikely that a single test will predict all forms of preeclampsia. This realization has led to the formulation of a new conceptual framework suggesting that a combination of markers (biochemical and/or biophysical) may be required to conduct comprehensive risk assessment for the syndrome.

Abstract
We designed and tested an automatic irrigation control system for fruit tree orchards, designated CRP. At the end of each day, the device calculates the irrigation dose (ID) from sap flow readings in the trunk of trees irrigated to replenish the crop water needs, relative to similar measurements made in over-irrigated trees. It then acts on the pump and electrovalve to supply an ID sufficient to keep the soil close to its field capacity during the irrigation period. Remote control of the system is possible from any computer or Smartphone connected to the Internet. We tested the CRP in an olive orchard in southern Spain. The device was robust and able to filter and amplify the output voltages of the heat-pulse velocity probes and to calculate reliable sap flow data. It calculated and supplied daily irrigation amounts to the orchard according to the specified irrigation protocol. The remote control facility proved to be useful for getting real-time information both on the CRP behaviour and the applied IDs, and for changing parameters of the irrigation protocol. For our conditions, olive trees with big root systems growing in a soil with a remarkable water-holding capacity, the approach mentioned above for calculating ID had not enough resolution to replace the daily crop water consumption. The device, however, was able to react when the soil water content fell below the threshold for soil water deficit. The threshold value was identified with simultaneous measurements of stem water potential in the instrumented trees. Our results suggest a change in the irrigation protocol that will allow the CRP to apply a recovery irrigation whenever that threshold is reached, making the device suitable for applying a deficit irrigation strategy in the orchard.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Renal insufficiency and renal transplant (RT) provoke a microinflammatory state that leads to increased atherosclerosis. It is not fully known whether calcineurin inhibitors (CNIs) play a role in the inflammation observed in these patients or whether any differences exist between CNIs. OBJECTIVES The study aimed to establish differences in the inflammatory state of two groups treated with cyclosporine microemulsion (CyA) or tacrolimus (TC). PATIENTS AND METHODS This prospective study included 81 RT patients divided into two groups according to the CNI: CyA group, n = 35 versus TC group, n = 46. The markers of inflammation (MIF) were determined preRT and at 3 and 12 months' postRT: C-reactive protein (CRP), serum amyloid protein A (SAA), interleukin-6 (IL-6), soluble interleukin-2 receptor (sIL-2R), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), and pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A). Samples were collected in stable patients in the absence of rejection, active infection, or inflammatory processes. RESULTS No significant differences existed between the markers of inflammation in the two treatment groups prior to transplantation. At 3 months' posttransplant, patients treated with CyA showed significantly higher levels of IL-6 (P = .05), SAA (P = .03), and sIL-2R (P = .008) compared with patients treated with TC. These differences were maintained for IL-6 (P = .03) and sIL-2R (P = .027) at 12 months' posttransplant. A multivariate analysis at 3 months showed that only age [OR 10.1; CI (95% 2.6-38.4); P = .001], SAA [OR 4.8; IC (95% 1.4-16.5); P = .015], and sIL-2R [OR 4.9; IC (95% 1.5-16.2); P = .009] were independent predictors of the CNI used. At 12 months, age [OR 3.7; IC (95% 0.9-14.2] and sIL-2R [OR 6.04; IC (95% 1.5-23); P = .006] continued to be independent predictors. CONCLUSIONS Patients treated with CyA displayed significantly higher levels of inflammatory markers (IL-6, SAA, sIL-2R) at 3 and 12 months' posttransplantation, independent of age, gender, time on dialysis, diabetes mellitus (preRT and de novo postRT), and renal function measured by serum creatinine.
