Abstract
MnAs exhibits a first-order phase transition from a ferromagnetic, high-spin metal hexagonal phase to a paramagnetic, lower-spin insulator orthorhombic phase at T(C)=313 K. Here, we report the results of neutron diffraction experiments showing that an external magnetic field, B, stabilizes the hexagonal phase above T(C). The phase transformation is reversible and constitutes the first demonstration of a bond-breaking transition induced by a magnetic field. The field-induced phase transition is accompanied by an enhanced magnetoresistance of about 17% at 310 K. The phenomenon appears to be similar to that of the colossal magnetoresistance response observed in the Mn [corrected] perovskite family.

Abstract
We report the results of resonant x-ray scattering experiments performed at the Np M(4,5) edges in NpO2. Below T(0)=25 K, the development of long-range order of Np electric quadrupoles is revealed by the growth of superlattice Bragg peaks. The polarization and azimuthal dependence of the intensity of the resonant peaks are well reproduced assuming anisotropic tensor susceptibility scattering from a triple-q(-->) longitudinal antiferroquadrupolar structure. Electric-quadrupole order in NpO2 could be driven by the ordering at T0 of magnetic octupoles of Gamma(5) symmetry, splitting the Np ground state quartet and leading to a singlet ground state with zero dipole-magnetic moment.

Abstract
We present the results of resonant x-ray scattering experiments on KCuF3. Structurally forbidden reflections, corresponding to magnetic and 3d-orbital long-range order, have been observed. Integrated intensities have been measured as a function of incident energy, polarization, azimuthal angle, and temperature. The results give evidence for a strong coupling between orbital and spin degrees of freedom. The interplay between magnetic and orbital order parameters is revealed by the temperature dependence of the intensity of orbital Bragg peaks.

Abstract
We observed coherent proton tunneling in the cyclic network of four hydrogen bonds in calix[4]arene. The tunneling frequency of 35 megahertz was revealed by a peak in the magnetic field dependence of the proton spin-lattice relaxation rate measured with field-cycling nuclear magnetic resonance in the solid state at temperatures below 80 kelvin. The amplitude of the coherent tunneling peak grows with temperature according to a Boltzmann law with energy D/kB = (125 +/- 10) kelvin (where kB is Boltzmann's constant). The tunneling peak can be interpreted in the context of level crossings in the region where the tunneling frequency matches the proton Larmor frequency. The tunneling spectrum reveals fine structure that we attribute to coupling between the hydrogen bonds in the network. The characteristics of the tunneling peak are interpreted in the context of the potential energy surface experienced by the hydrogen atoms in the network.

Abstract
At low temperature, macroscopic properties of URu(2)Si(2) display a characteristic energy scale delta(0)(B) which decreases when a magnetic field is applied, and eventually vanishes at an extrapolated value of the field of about 40 T. We have performed inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the magnetic dynamics of URu(2)Si(2) in applied fields along the c axis of intensities up to 12 T. We show that delta(0)(B) is not related to gaps in the magnetic fluctuations spectra. This provides direct evidence of the fact that two distinct energy scales govern the physics of this compound.
