Abstract
BACKGROUND Many studies have examined the risk factors for HCC (including hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, aflatoxin, retinol, cigarette smoking, and alcohol consumption). However, data from previous studies on the association between iron exposure, land subsidence, and HCC mortality/incidence were limited, especially in Taiwanese population. We aimed to explore the geographical distribution of HCC mortality rates by township-specific data and to evaluate the association between HCC mortality, land subsidence, and iron levels in groundwater in Taiwan. METHODS We conducted an ecological study and calculated the HCC age-standardized mortality/incidence rates according to death certificates issued in Taiwan from 1992 to 2001 and incidence data from 1995-1998. The land subsidence dataset before 2005 and iron concentrations in groundwater in 1989 are also involved in this study. Both geographical information systems and Pearson correlation coefficients were used to analyze the relationship between HCC mortality rates, land subsidence, and iron concentrations in groundwater. RESULTS Township-specific HCC mortality rates are higher in southwestern coastal townships where serious land subsidence and higher township-specific concentrations of iron in groundwater are present. The Pearson correlation coefficients of iron concentrations in groundwater and ASRs of HCC were 0.286 (P = 0.004) in males and 0.192 (P = 0.058) in females for mortality data; the coefficients were 0.375 (P < 0.001) in males and 0.210 (P = 0.038) in females for incidence data. CONCLUSIONS This study showed that HCC mortality is clustered in southwestern Taiwan and the association with the iron levels in groundwater in Taiwanese population warrant further investigation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Numerous studies have examined the association between heavy metal contamination (including arsenic [As], cadmium [Cd], chromium [Cr], copper [Cu], mercury [Hg], nickel [Ni], lead [Pb], and zinc [Zn]) and lung cancer. However, data from previous studies on pathological cell types are limited, particularly regarding exposure to low-dose soil heavy metal contamination. The purpose of this study was to explore the association between soil heavy metal contamination and lung cancer incidence by specific cell type in Taiwan. METHODS We conducted an ecological study and calculated the annual averages of eight soil heavy metals (i.e., As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn) by using data from the Taiwan Environmental Protection Administration from1982 to 1986. The age-standardized incidence rates of lung cancer according to two major pathological types (adenocarcinoma [AC] and squamous cell carcinoma [SCC]) were obtained from the National Cancer Registry Program conducted in Taiwan from 2001 to 2005. A geographical information system was used to plot the maps of soil heavy metal concentration and lung cancer incidence rates. Poisson regression models were used to obtain the adjusted relative ratios (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the lung cancer incidence associated with soil heavy metals. RESULTS For males, the trend test for lung SCC incidence caused by exposure to Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, and Zn showed a statistically significant dose-response relationship. However, for lung AC, only Cu and Ni had a significant dose-response relationship. As for females, those achieving a statistically significant dose-response relationship for the trend test were Cr (P = 0.02), Ni (P = 0.02), and Zn (P= 0.02) for lung SCC, and Cu (P < 0.01) and Zn (P = 0.02) for lung AC. CONCLUSION The current study suggests that a dose-response relationship exists between low-dose soil heavy metal concentration and lung cancer occurrence by specific cell-type; however, the relevant mechanism should be explored further.

Abstract
Evidence suggests that physical activity has a beneficial effect of elevated high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) on reducing coronary artery risk. However, previous studies show contrasting results for this association between different types of exercise training (i.e., aerobic, resistance or combined aerobic and resistance training).The aim of this study was to determine which type of exercise training is more effective in increasing HDL-C levels. A total of 40 obese males, aged 18-29 years old, were randomized into four groups: an aerobic training group (n= 10), a resistance training group (n= 10), a combined exercise training group (n= 10), and a control group(n= 10). After 12-week of exercise program, anthropometrics, blood biochemical variables and physical fitness components were compared with the data obtained at the baseline. The multiple regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between different types of exercise training and changes in HDL-C while adjusting for potential confounders. The results showed that with the control group as the comparator, the effects of combined exercise training group (β= 4.17, P< 0.0001), aerobic training group (β= 3.65, P< 0.0001) and resistance training group (β= 2.10, P=0.0001) were positively associated with increase in HDL-C after adjusting for potential confounders. Our findings suggested that a short-term exercise program can play an important role in increasing the HDL-C level, either aerobic or resistance training alone increase significantly the HDL-C levels, but the improvements are greatest with combined aerobic and resistance training.

Abstract
In this study, we determined the cross-generation link between sedentary behavior of schoolchildren with their 6-year BMI progression pattern and metabolic disease category of their parents. Anthropometric data of 11,190 elementary schoolchildren (aged 13) were retrospectively tracked from 2003 to 2009, and classified into two groups: Normal (N = 9793) and Metabolic Disorders (N = 1397), based on the disease category of their parents (under at least one medication for stroke, coronary heart disease (CAD), diabetes, and hypertension). Schoolchildren's weekly time spending on reading, computer use, video game, music listening, radio listening, TV watching, and movie watching, was reported with parental assistance via questionnaires. Baseline BMI and 6 years BMI progression rate in Metabolic Disorders group were significantly higher than those in Normal group. In particular, offsprings from stroke parents exhibited the greatest baseline BMI across 6 years compared to the rest of the disease categories. For Metabolic Disorders group, time spending on computer use, video game, TV watching, and music listening of schoolchildren was significantly longer than Normal group. Reading, which occupied the largest portion of weekly sedentary time, was not contributed to the group difference on the BMI status of schoolchildren. The current study demonstrates that schoolchildren from family with at least one parent having metabolic disorders, particularly stroke, tend to be more sedentary and heavior than their age-matched normal peers. School-based obesity prevention programs are suggested for this specific group by restricting time spent on technology-associated sedentary behaviors and promoting sport activities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/PURPOSE Umbilical cord blood is rich in primitive natural killer (NK) cells, which are activated by interleukin (IL)-12. It was previously reported that a novel IL-12 family cytokine, IL-27 comprised of EBI3 and p28, was elevated in maternal serum during normal pregnancy. Thus, we compared the immune regulatory functions of IL-27 and IL-12 on mononuclear cells derived from cord blood and adult peripheral blood. METHODS After stimulation with IL-27, IL-12, and IL-27 combined with IL-12, the cytotoxicity against BJAB lymphoma cells by blood mononuclear cells was performed. Then immunofluorescence staining, reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting were used to detect the effects of IL-27 and IL-12 in isolated NK cells. RESULTS IL-27, IL-12, and IL-27 combined with IL-12 enhanced the cytotoxicity of adult peripheral blood cells and cord blood cells, but the proliferation of distinct subpopulations of cells was not evident. Similar results were also obtained with purified cord blood NK cells. Interestingly, distinct from IL-12, IL-27 could induce aggregation and morphological changes of umbilical cord blood cells. Finally, IL-27 combined with IL-12 could stimulate increased IL-27 receptor (gp130 and WSX-1) transcripts in purified cord blood NK cells. However, the activation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) in NK cells was only detected in the presence of IL-27, but not IL-12 alone. CONCLUSION From previous results, we summarize our current understanding of the augmentation of distinct regulation of NK cells by IL-27 and IL-12.

Abstract
The 100-nm NiO-Ag composite films with Ag content of 0 to 24.4 at.% are deposited on glass substrates. It is found that an ultra high electric resistivity (rho) value is obtained and cannot be detected by four point probe measurement when the Ag content is less than 3.4 at.%. The rho value is reduced significantly to 29.0 Omega-cm as Ag content is increased to 4.2 at.%, and it decreases greatly to 0.009 Omega-cm as the content of Ag is further increased to 24.4 at.%. The NiO-Ag composite film with Ag content of 4.2 at.% shows p-type conduction. However, it becomes n-type when the Ag content increases to 9.3 at.%, which results from the Ag atoms segregated at grain boundary of NiO when the excess Ag atoms are added into NiO films. On the other hand, the transmittance of the NiO-Ag films drops continuously from 96.3% to 31.6% as the Ag content increases from 0 to 24.4%.

Abstract
CoPt/Ag films were prepared by magnetron sputtering on glass substrates and subsequent annealing. The dependence of degree of ordering and magnetic properties on Ag film thickness and annealing conditions were investigated. It was found that the Ag underlayer played a dominant role in inducing the (001) texture of the CoPt film after annealing. CoPt films with a thickness about 20 nm and Ag underlayers with a thickness about 70 nm are easy to obtain a large degree of ordering and a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy after annealing at 700 degrees C for 30 min. CoPt/Ag films with out-of-plane coercivity (Hc (perpendicular)) in the range of 13.5-14.0 kOe and a out-of-plane squareness (S(perpendicular)) of 0.97 were obtained after annealing at 700 degrees C for 30 min. Ag underlayer is beneficial to enhance the Hc(perpendicular)and S(perpendicular) of CoPt film significantly. The degree of ordering and perpendicular magnetic properties of the CoPt films which deposited on Ag underlayer are larger than those of the single layer CoPt films.

Abstract
In this study, the (GeSbSn)(100-x0Co(x) films (x = 0-13.3) were deposited on natural oxidized silicon wafer and glass substrate by dc magnetron co-sputtering of GeSbSn and Co targets. The ZnS-SiO2 films were used as protective layers. The thicknesses of the (GeSbSn)(100-x)Co(x) films and protective layer were 100 nm and 30 nm, respectively. We investigated the effects of Co addition on the thermal property, crystallization kinetics, and crystallization mechanism of the GeSbSn recording film. The crystallization temperatures of (GeSbSn)(100-x)Co(x) films were decreased with Co content. It was found that the activation energy of the (GeSbSn)(100-x)Co(x) films will decrease from 1.53 eV to 0.55 eV as Co content increased from 0 at.% to 13.3 at.%.

Abstract
The (In15Sb85)(100-x)Zn(x) films (x = 0 - 17.4) were deposited on nature oxidized Si wafer and glass substrate at room temperature by magnetron co-sputtering of Sb target and InZn composite target. The thermal property of the films was examined by a homemade reflectivity thermal analyzer. Microstructures of the films were analyzed by transmission electron microscope (TEM). We examined the effects of Zn addition on the thermal property, crystallization kinetics, and crystallization mechanism of the In15Sb85 recording film. As x = 0 - 17.4, thermal analysis shows that the (In15Sb85)(100-x)Zn(x) films have two phase transition temperature ranges which are 189 degrees C-215 degrees C and 300 degrees C-350 degrees C. It is found that the activation energy is increased with Zn content. This indicates that the thermal stability of amorphous state is improved by doping Zn. The optical contrasts of the films are all larger than 15%, as x = 0 - 6.2, indicating that the films have the potential in blue laser optical recording media application.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Swimming is a lifestyle intervention recommended by many clinicians in the prevention and treatment of hypertension. Yet, not all studies have agreed that swimming training can reduce blood pressure (BP). Inclusion of normotensive subjects could be a confounder for discrepancies among studies. In this one-year longitudinal study, long-term effects of swimming training on BP were investigated in 7 mild hypertensive patients (systolic BP (SBP) > 140 mmHg) and 16 normotensive controls. At baseline, these subjects (aged 21.5 +/- 0.1 years) did not participate in any form of sport training activity for the previous 3 months before enrollment into the training program. The training distance progressed from 0 (baseline) to 7 kilometers per week. BP and the homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) were determined under fasted condition at baseline and 48 h after the last swimming bout. The hypertensive patients displayed significantly greater HOMA-IR than age-matched normotensive controls. When data of all subjects were pooled, plasma glucose concentration was only slightly lowered after training, but weight, height, body mass index, SBP, diastolic BP (DBP) and HOMA-IR values were not significantly altered. However, when observation was restricted to the hypertensive patients, swimming training significantly lowered SBP by approximately 17 mmHg, concurrent with 41% reduction in HOMA-IR. Intriguingly, SBP in the normotensive subjects was elevated by approximately 6 mmHg after training. CONCLUSIONS The present study found normalization rather than universal reduction effect of swimming training on BP. Furthermore, the BP-lowering effect of training in hypertensive patients appears to be associated with improvement in insulin sensitivity.

Abstract
The survival and development of pre-implantation embryos are determinant factors affecting the outcome of animal reproduction. It is essential to transfer the expression of the genetic material from maternal sources, that is the ovum to the zygote before implantation to ensure successful development. Differentiation and transformation of blastomeres initiated during the morula and blastocyst stages is an important step of the embryonic development prior to implantation. We collected morula and early blastocyst samples from pure-bred Landrace pigs in vivo to study the differential gene expression patterns at these two stages. Total RNA was extracted from individual embryos and two rounds of amplification were employed. Two micrograms of antisense RNA, targets, were prepared and hybridized with each of four custom made oligo microarrays representing 24,000 porcine genes. The analyses of replicate hybridizations showed that among the 24,000 genes, 162 genes were expressed fivefold or greater in the morula compared to early blastocysts and 2126 genes were expressed fivefold or greater in early blastocysts compared to the morula. Of these differentially expressed genes, 1429 genes were functionally annotated with related human Gene Ontology terms. In addition to basic metabolic processes, genes related to signal transduction, transportation and cell differentiation were found in both stages and were up-regulated as embryo development proceeded. Real time polymerase chain reaction was utilized to quantify 12 genes differentially expressed in the 2 embryonic stages and validated the reliability of major evidences shown in microarrays. In conclusion, we have obtained a preliminary landscape of genes differentially expressed during the transition from morula to early blastocysts in pigs and showed a generally increased transcriptional activity, perhaps in preparation for implantation. Our results provide an opportunity to study the functions of these genes in relation to the development and survival of pre-implantation porcine embryos.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Routine intra-abdominal drainage has been recommended for detecting surgical complications, such as anastomotic leaks or intra-abdominal hemorrhage, after laparoscopic gastric bypass for morbid obesity. The aim of this study was to determine whether routine drainage after laparoscopic gastric bypass is indeed necessary. METHODS Patients undergoing laparoscopic gastric bypass with intra-abdominal drainage (D-group) were compared with those without drainage (N-group) in a retrospective study. The main outcome measures were postoperative course and complications. RESULTS No differences were observed in the postoperative complications. Both groups had one major complication of leakage (1/90, 1.1%). Minor complications occurred in six D-group patients (6/90, 6.7%) and eight N-group patients (8/90, 8.9%) (P=0.578). No difference was observed in postoperative analgesic dose usage (mean ± SD: 63 ± 37 mg vs 60 ± 31 mg; P=0.963) or length of stay hospital (5.2 ± 2.6 d vs 4.7 ± 1.8 d; P=0.135). However, the N-group had a shorter time to flatus passage compared to the D-group (1.6 ± 0.7 d vs 1.2 ± 0.5 d; P=0.006). CONCLUSION Routine abdominal drainage is not necessary after a successful laparoscopic gastric bypass for morbidly obese patients. Drainage omission may contribute to a quicker recovery without additional surgical complications.

Abstract
The single-layered FePt films with thickness in the range of 5 to 50 nm are deposited directly on Si(100) substrate without underlayer, then post annealed at 700 degrees C by rapid thermal annealing (RTA) technique. As the film thickness of FePt is over 20 nm, the L1(0) FePt(111) preferred orientation is presented and tended to in-plane magnetic anisotropy. However, the L1(0) FePt(001) texture is obtained and exhibited perpendicular magnetic anisotropy as the film thickness is decreased to 10 nm. Its perpendicular coercivity (Hc(perpendicular)), saturation magnetization (Ms) and perpendicular squareness (S(perpendicular)) are 14.8 kOe, 795 emu/cm3 and 0.79, respectively. On the other hand, both the grain size and domain size of FePt film decrease with decreasing the film thickness of FePt. The grain size for 10-nm FePt film is as small as 9.7 nm with domain size of 123 nm, which reveal its significant potential as perpendicular magnetic recording media for ultra high-density recording.

Abstract
In the present study, we investigated the effect of a long-term mountain expedition on glucose tolerance and insulin action. Twelve registered mountaineers ages 31 years (SD = 1.1) participated in a 25-day expedition at a 2,200-3,800-m altitude with an average duration of 8 hr per day. Arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) was substantially reduced during hiking. Glucose tolerance and insulin responses were measured prior to and twice during the expedition period. Maximal oxygen consumption increased from 43.0 +/- 2.7 to 49.1 +/- 2.2 mL/kg/min. Percentage of body fat decreased from 19.4 +/- 6.8% to 16.9 +/- 5.9%. The area under the curves for insulin and glucose during the oral glucose tolerance test were also reduced in Days 3 and 25. The present study demonstrated that altitude hiking activity is an effective lifestyle intervention to improve insulin action.

Abstract
Exploration into electrical stimulation of the retina has thus far focussed primarily upon the development of prostheses targeted at one of two sites of intervention - the epi- and sub-retinal surfaces. These two approaches have sound, logical merit owing to their proximity to retinal neurons and their potential to deliver stimuli via the surviving retinal neural networks respectively. There is increasing evidence, however, that electric field effects, electrode engineering limitations, and electrode-tissue interactions limit the spatial resolution that once was hoped could be elicited from electrical stimulation at epi- and sub-retinal sites. An alternative approach has been proposed that places a stimulating electrode array within the supra-choroidal space - that is, between the sclera and the choroid. Here we investigate whether discrete, cortical activity patterns can be elicited via electrical stimulation of a feline retina using a custom, 14 channel, silicone rubber and Pt electrode array arranged in two hexagons comprising seven electrodes each. Cortical responses from Areas 17/18 were acquired using a silicon-based, multi-channel, penetrating probe developed at IMTEK, University of Freiburg, within the European research project NeuroProbes. Multi-unit spike activity was recorded in synchrony with the presentation of electrical stimuli. Results show that distinct cortical response patterns could be elicited from each hexagon separated by 1.8 mm (center-to-center) with a center-to-center electrode spacing within each hexagon of 0.55 mm. This lends support that higher spatial resolution may also be discerned.

Abstract
Intrinsic signal optical imaging (ISOI) is a technique that enables researchers to relate changes in cortical activity in response to stimuli by measuring changes in hemoglobin oxygenation and local blood volume. As the time course of these changes - local blood volume in particular - is of the order of seconds, the neural activity that initiates these changes is only indirectly acquired in ISOI. To better correlate these events, it is beneficial to simultaneously record both the evoked cortical potentials and ISOI. In this study we present a novel, transparent, recording array that allows the combination of optical imaging with electrical recordings without the use of metal electrodes in the observation field. Pilot data were recorded after visual and electrical stimuli of the eye to prove the concept.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Kidney transplantation provides a choice of active treatment for patients with chronic renal failure. However, the sources of organs are limited; therefore, living kidney donation is an alternative source. The regulation of organ donation in Taiwan stipulates that living organ donation is restricted to living related recipients. We sought to investigate factors that influenced or prevented individuals from living kidney donation in our center. MATERIALS AND METHODS From January 2005 to December 2008, there were 266 potential candidates who underwent evaluation for living kidney donation in our center. RESULTS Among the potential candidates, most were spouses (n=85, 31.9%), followed by parents (n=67, 25.1%), siblings (n=62, 23.3%), and children (n=40, 15%). Eventually, 124 candidates (47%) completed organ donation, most of whom were siblings (n=39, 31.5%), then parents (n=38, 30.6%), spouses (n=26), and children (n=18). Most donors were females, including mothers and sisters. The most frequent reason to not donate was unwillingness, due to potential influences on their health, economic stress due to suspension of their job, and objection of family members. In 34 candidates (23.9%), adverse health factors of potential candidates prohibited them from donating, including age, chronic medical illness, hepatitis carrier status, severe depression, or mental retardation. Among 59 potential donor-recipient pairs with incompatible ABO blood types or highly sensitized to potential donors, 22 candidates completed living kidney donation. CONCLUSION Although laparoscopic nephrectomy for living kidney donation decreases the discomfort and hospital stay after donation, we can only promote living kidney donation if we can deal with the possible factors that prohibit candidates from living kidney donation, such as morbidity after organ donation, anxiety, or other factors. After analyzing those factors, we must also develop a protocol to closely follow the living kidney donors to ensure their health status and relieve their anxiety.

Abstract
A microbial process for the degradation of propionitrile by Klebsiella oxytoca was studied. The microorganism, K. oxytoca, was isolated from the discharged wastewater of metal plating factory in southern Taiwan and adapted for propionitrile biodegradation. The free and immobilized cells of K. oxytoca were then examined for their capabilities on degrading propionitrile under various conditions. Alginate (AL) and cellulose triacetate (CT) techniques were applied for the preparation of immobilized cells. The efficiency and produced metabolic intermediates and end-products of propionitrile degradation were monitored in bath and continuous bioreactor experiments. Results reveal that up to 100 and 150 mM of propionitrile could be removed completely by the free and immobilized cell systems, respectively. Furthermore, both immobilized cell systems show higher removal efficiencies in wider ranges of temperature (20-40 degrees C) and pH (6-8) compared with the free cell system. Results also indicate that immobilized cell system could support a higher cell density to enhance the removal efficiency of propionitrile. Immobilized cells were reused in five consecutive degradation experiments, and up to 99% of propionitrile degradation was observed in each batch test. This suggests that the activity of immobilized cells can be maintained and reused throughout different propionitrile degradation processes. A two-step pathway was observed for the biodegradation of propionitrile. Propionamide was first produced followed by propionic acid and ammonia. Results suggest that nitrile hydratase and amidase were involved in the degradation pathways of K. oxytoca. In the continuous bioreactor, both immobilized cells were capable of removing 150 mM of propionitriles completely within 16h, and the maximum propionitriles removal rates using AL and CT immobilized beads were 5.04 and 4.98 mM h(-1), respectively. Comparing the removal rates obtained from batch experiments with immobilized cells (AL and CT were 1.57 and 2.18 mM h(-1) at 150 mM of propionitrile, respectively), the continuous-flow bioreactor show higher potential for practical application.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of the combination of tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) and adriamycin (ADM) on the human breast cancer cell line MCF-7 and to identify potential mechanisms of apoptosis. Cell viability was analyzed by the MTT assay and the synergistic effect was assessed by the Webb coefficient. Apoptosis was quantified using the annexin V-FITC and propidium iodide staining flow cytometry. The mRNA expression of TRAIL receptors was measured by RT-PCR. Changes in the quantities of Bax and caspase-9 proteins were determined by Western blot. MCF-7 cells were relatively resistant to TRAIL (IC50 >10 microg/mL), while MCF-7 cells were sensitive to ADM (IC50 <10 microg/mL). A subtoxic concentration of ADM (0.5 microg/mL) combined with 0.1, 1, or 10 microg/mL TRAIL had a synergistic cytotoxic effect on MCF-7 cells, which was more marked with the combination of TRAIL (0.1 microg/mL) and ADM (0.5 microg/mL). In addition, the combined treatment with TRAIL and ADM significantly increased cell apoptosis from 9.8% (TRAIL) or 17% (ADM) to 38.7%, resulting in a synergistic apoptotic effect, which is proposed to be mediated by up-regulation of DR4 and DR5 mRNA expression and increased expression of Bax and caspase-9 proteins. These results suggest that the combination of TRAIL and ADM might be a promising therapy for breast cancer.

Abstract
Edwardsiella ictaluri septicemia occurs worldwide and causes high mortality and considerable economic damage to the catfish industry especially in Vietnam and the USA. To control Edwardsiella septicemia farmers extensively use antibiotics and various vaccination methods. Vaccination with inactivated vaccines has come with variable efficacy. In this trial the results of an approach of controlling Edwardsiella septicemia of Tra catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) in Vietnam through vaccination via mucosal surfaces are presented. The results show that a combination of primary vaccination by immersion with inactivated E. ictaluri followed by an oral boost with a formulated antigen preparation induces a statistically significant level of protection against mortality caused by experimental infection 4 weeks post-boost. Fish immunized by immersion only show significantly lower level of protection but significantly higher than the controls. Repeated boosts result in improved duration of immunity with a relative percent survival (RPS) of 47% at 90% control mortality. The immunization procedure provides an alternative for disease control through vaccination.

Abstract
A successful experiment with a physical model requires necessary conditions of similarity. This study presents an experimental method with a semi-scale physical model. The model is used to monitor and verify soil conservation by check dams in a small watershed on the Loess Plateau of China. During experiments, the model-prototype ratio of geomorphic variables was kept constant under each rainfall event. Consequently, experimental data are available for verification of soil erosion processes in the field and for predicting soil loss in a model watershed with check dams. Thus, it can predict the amount of soil loss in a catchment. This study also mentions four criteria: similarities of watershed geometry, grain size and bare land, Froude number (Fr) for rainfall event, and soil erosion in downscaled models. The efficacy of the proposed method was confirmed using these criteria in two different downscaled model experiments. The B-Model, a large scale model, simulates watershed prototype. The two small scale models, D(a) and D(b), have different erosion rates, but are the same size. These two models simulate hydraulic processes in the B-Model. Experiment results show that while soil loss in the small scale models was converted by multiplying the soil loss scale number, it was very close to that of the B-Model. Obviously, with a semi-scale physical model, experiments are available to verify and predict soil loss in a small watershed area with check dam system on the Loess Plateau, China.

Abstract
PURPOSE In this study, a patient-driven loop control in a non-invasive functional electrical stimulation (FES) system was designed to restore ambulation function of patients with stroke with their residual capabilities. METHOD With this patient-driven loop control, patients use the electromyographic (EMG) signals from their voluntary controlled muscles in affected extremity to adjust stimulus parameters of the system. A special designed FES system generated electrical stimuli to excite the paralysed muscles through surface electrodes on the basis of the control command from the residual myoelectric signals. The EMG signals were also served as the trigger and the adjustment of stimulus parameters and thereby adding versatility of the FES system. One patient with hemiplegia was recruited to conduct clinical evaluation and treated by using the new closed-loop FES system. RESULTS The experimental results showed that hemiplegic could successfully control the system to restore their lost ambulation functions with the strategy of patient-driven loop control. It is revealed that the mean velocity, cadence, stride length, active ankle motion range and functional ambulation category have improved significantly from 0.22 + or - 0.17 m/s, 37.3 + or - 15.5 steps/min, 0.32 + or - 0.11 m, 10 degrees , level 2 to 0.46 + or - 0.23 m/s, 58.2 + or - 19.1 steps/min, 0.73 + or - 0.22 m, 35 degrees , level 4 respectively for the patient. A paired t-test indicated that differences in the EMG of the tibialis anterior and the gastrocnemius muscles between patient's disabled (affected-side) foot and normal (unaffected-side) foot are not significant (p > 0.05) after 12 weeks of training. CONCLUSIONS According to the experiment results, this patient-driven loop control can be beneficial for patient with hemiplegia to restore their ambulation functions such as dorsi-flexion and plantar-flexion. The control strategy of this study has the potential to be employed not only in the FES system but also in other assistive devices.

Abstract
The purpose of this paper was to investigate the effects of viral kinetics and exhaled droplet size on indoor transmission dynamics of influenza infection. The target cell-limited model with delayed virus production was adopted to strengthen the inner mechanisms of virus infection on human epithelial cell. The particle number and volume involved in the viral kinetics were linked with Wells-Riley mathematical equation to quantify the infection risk. We investigated population dynamics in a specific elementary school by using the seasonal susceptible - exposed - infected - recovery (SEIR) model. We found that exhaled pulmonary bioaerosol of sneeze (particle diameter <10 microm) have 10(2)-fold estimate higher than that of cough. Sneeze and cough caused risk probabilities range from 0.075 to 0.30 and 0.076, respectively; whereas basic reproduction numbers (R(0)) estimates range from 4 to 17 for sneeze and nearly 4 for cough, indicating sneeze-posed higher infection risk. The viral kinetics and exhaled droplet size for sneeze affect indoor transmission dynamics of influenza infection since date post-infection 1-7. This study provides direct mechanistic support that indoor influenza virus transmission can be characterized by viral kinetics in human upper respiratory tracts that are modulated by exhaled droplet size. Practical Implications This paper provides a predictive model that can integrate the influenza viral kinetics (target cell-limited model), indoor aerosol transmission potential (Wells-Riley mathematical equation), and population dynamic model [susceptible - exposed - infected - recovery (SEIR) model] in a proposed susceptible population. Viral kinetics expresses the competed results of human immunity ability with influenza virus generation. By linking the viral kinetics and different exposure parameters and environmental factors in a proposed school setting with five age groups, the influenza infection risk can be estimated. On the other hand, we implicated a new simple means of inhaling to mitigate exhaled bioaerosols through an inhaled non-toxic aerosol. The proposed predictive model may serve as a tool for further investigation of specific control measure such as the personal protection masks to alter the particle size and number concentration characteristics and minimize the exhaled bioaerosol droplet to decrease the infection risk in indoor environment settings.

Abstract
Human trials of prototype visual prostheses have successfully elicited visual percepts (phosphenes) in the visual field of implant recipients blinded through retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration. Researchers are progressing rapidly towards a device that utilizes individual phosphenes as the elementary building blocks to compose a visual scene. This form of prosthetic vision is expected, in the near term, to have low resolution, large inter-phosphene gaps, distorted spatial distribution of phosphenes, restricted field of view, an eccentrically located phosphene field and limited number of expressible luminance levels. In order to fully realize the potential of these devices, there needs to be a training and rehabilitation program which aims to assist the prosthesis recipients to understand what they are seeing, and also to adapt their viewing habits to optimize the performance of the device. Based on the literature of psychophysical studies in simulated and real prosthetic vision, this paper proposes a comprehensive, theoretical training regime for a prosthesis recipient: visual search, visual acuity, reading, face/object recognition, hand-eye coordination and navigation. The aim of these tasks is to train the recipients to conduct visual scanning, eccentric viewing and reading, discerning low-contrast visual information, and coordinating bodily actions for visual-guided tasks under prosthetic vision. These skills have been identified as playing an important role in making prosthetic vision functional for the daily activities of their recipients.
