Abstract
The COMPASS Collaboration at CERN has measured diffractive dissociation of 190 GeV/c pions into the π(-)π(-)π(+) final state using a stationary hydrogen target. A partial-wave analysis (PWA) was performed in bins of 3π mass and four-momentum transfer using the isobar model and the so far largest PWA model consisting of 88 waves. A narrow peak is observed in the f0(980)π channel with spin, parity and C-parity quantum numbers J(PC)=1(++). We present a resonance-model study of a subset of the spin-density matrix selecting 3π states with J(PC)=2(++) and 4(++) decaying into ρ(770)π and with J(PC)=1(++) decaying into f0(980)π. We identify a new a1 meson with mass (1414(-13)(+15)) MeV/c2 and width (153(-23)(+8)) MeV/c2. Within the final states investigated in our analysis, we observe the new a1(1420) decaying only into f0(980)π, suggesting its exotic nature.

Abstract
Previous research on developmental dyscalculia (DD) suggested that deficits in the number line estimation task are related to a failure to represent number magnitude linearly. This conclusion was derived from the observation of logarithmically shaped estimation patterns. However, recent research questioned this idea of an isomorphic relationship between estimation patterns and number magnitude representation. In the present study, we evaluated an alternative hypothesis: impairments in the number line estimation task are due to a general deficit in mapping numbers onto space. Adults with DD and a matched control group had to learn linear and non-linear layouts of the number line via feedback. Afterwards, we assessed their performance how well they learnt the new number-space mappings. We found irrespective of the layouts worse performance of adults with DD. Additionally, in case of the linear layout, we observed that their performance did not differ from controls near reference points, but that differences between groups increased as the distance to reference point increased. We conclude that worse performance of adults with DD in the number line task might be due a deficit in mapping numbers onto space which can be partly overcome relying on reference points.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The evolutionary highly conserved neurohypophyseal hormones oxytocin and arginine vasopressin play key roles in regulating social cognition and behaviours. The effects of these two peptides are meditated by their specific receptors, which are encoded by the oxytocin receptor (OXTR) and arginine vasopressin receptor 1a genes (AVPR1A), respectively. In several species, polymorphisms in these genes have been linked to various behavioural traits. Little, however, is known about whether positive selection acts on sequence variants in genes influencing variation in human behaviours. RESULTS We identified, in both neuroreceptor genes, signatures of balancing selection in the cis-regulative acting sequences such as transcription factor binding and enhancer sequences, as well as in a transcriptional repressor sequence motif. Additionally, in the intron 3 of the OXTR gene, the SNP rs59190448 appears to be under positive directional selection. For rs59190448, only one phenotypical association is known so far, but it is in high LD' (>0.8) with loci of known association; i.e., variants associated with key pro-social behaviours and mental disorders in humans. CONCLUSIONS Only for one SNP on the OXTR gene (rs59190448) was a sign of positive directional selection detected with all three methods of selection detection. For rs59190448, however, only one phenotypical association is known, but rs59190448 is in high LD' (>0.8), with variants associated with important pro-social behaviours and mental disorders in humans. We also detected various signatures of balancing selection on both neuroreceptor genes.

Abstract
AIM Mild hypothermia (MH) decreases left ventricular (LV) end-diastolic capacitance. We sought to clarify whether this results from incomplete relaxation. METHODS Ten anaesthetized pigs were cooled from normothermia (NT, 38 °C) to MH (33 °C). LV end-diastolic pressure (LVPed), volume (LVVed) and pressure-volume relationships (EDPVRs) were determined during stepwise right atrial pacing. LV capacitance (i.e. LVVed at LVPed of 10 mmHg, LV VPed10) was derived from the EDPVR. Pacing-induced changes of diastolic indices (LVPed, LVVed and LV VPed10) were analysed as a function of (i) heart rate and (ii) the ratio between diastolic time interval (t-dia) and LV isovolumic relaxation constant τ, which was calculated using a logistic fit (τL ) and monoexponential fit with zero asymptote (τZ ) and nonzero asymptote (τNZ ). RESULTS Mild hypothermia decreased heart rate (85 ± 4 to 68 ± 3 bpm), increased τL (22 ± 1 to 57 ± 4 ms), τZ (26 ± 2 to 56 ± 5 ms) and τNZ (41 ± 1 to 96 ± 5 ms), decreased t-dia/τ ratios, and shifted the EDPVR leftwards compared to NT (all P < 0.05). During NT, pacing at ≥140 bpm shifted the EDPVR progressively leftwards. During MH, relationships between diastolic indices and heart rate were shifted towards lower heart rates compared to NT. However, relationships between diastolic indices and t-dia/τ during NT and MH were superimposable. CONCLUSION We conclude that the loss of LV end-diastolic capacitance during MH can be explained at least in part by slowed LV relaxation. MH thereby is an example of incomplete LV relaxation at a spontaneous low heart rate. Caution may be advised, when heart rate is increased in patients treated with MH.

Abstract
The COMPASS collaboration at CERN has investigated pion Compton scattering, π(-)γ→π(-)γ, at center-of-mass energy below 3.5 pion masses. The process is embedded in the reaction π(-)Ni→π(-)γNi, which is initiated by 190 GeV pions impinging on a nickel target. The exchange of quasireal photons is selected by isolating the sharp Coulomb peak observed at smallest momentum transfers, Q(2)<0.0015 (GeV/c)(2). From a sample of 63,000 events, the pion electric polarizability is determined to be α(π)=(2.0±0.6(stat)±0.7(syst))×10(-4) fm(3) under the assumption α(π)=-β(π), which relates the electric and magnetic dipole polarizabilities. It is the most precise measurement of this fundamental low-energy parameter of strong interaction that has been addressed since long by various methods with conflicting outcomes. While this result is in tension with previous dedicated measurements, it is found in agreement with the expectation from chiral perturbation theory. An additional measurement replacing pions by muons, for which the cross-section behavior is unambiguously known, was performed for an independent estimate of the systematic uncertainty.

Socio-economic conditions during early life are known to affect later life outcomes such as health or social success. We investigated whether family socio-economic background may also affect facial attractiveness. We used the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study (n = 8434) to analyze the association between an individual's parental socio-economic background (in terms of father's highest education and parental income) and that individual's facial attractiveness (estimated by rating of high school yearbook photographs when subjects were between 17 and 20 years old), controlling for subjects' sex, year of birth, and father's age at subjects' birth. Subjects' facial attractiveness increased with increasing father's highest educational attainment as well as increasing parental income, with the latter effect being stronger for female subjects as well. We conclude that early socio-economic conditions predict, to some extent, facial attractiveness in young adulthood.

Abstract
Flavanoid-rich dark chocolate consumption benefits cardiovascular health, but underlying mechanisms are elusive. We investigated the acute effect of dark chocolate on the reactivity of prothrombotic measures to psychosocial stress. Healthy men aged 20-50 years (mean ± SD: 35.7 ± 8.8) were assigned to a single serving of either 50 g of flavonoid-rich dark chocolate (n=31) or 50 g of optically identical flavonoid-free placebo chocolate (n=34). Two hours after chocolate consumption, both groups underwent an acute standardised psychosocial stress task combining public speaking and mental arithmetic. We determined plasma levels of four stress-responsive prothrombotic measures (i. e., fibrinogen, clotting factor VIII activity, von Willebrand Factor antigen, fibrin D-dimer) prior to chocolate consumption, immediately before and after stress, and at 10 minutes and 20 minutes after stress cessation. We also measured the flavonoid epicatechin, and the catecholamines epinephrine and norepinephrine in plasma. The dark chocolate group showed a significantly attenuated stress reactivity of the hypercoagulability marker D-dimer (F=3.87, p=0.017) relative to the placebo chocolate group. Moreover, the blunted D-dimer stress reactivity related to higher plasma levels of the flavonoid epicatechin assessed before stress (F=3.32, p = 0.031) but not to stress-induced changes in catecholamines (p's=0.35). There were no significant group differences in the other coagulation measures (p's≥0.87). Adjustments for covariates did not alter these findings. In conclusion, our findings indicate that a single consumption of flavonoid-rich dark chocolate blunted the acute prothrombotic response to psychosocial stress, thereby perhaps mitigating the risk of acute coronary syndromes triggered by emotional stress.

Abstract
The operational momentum effect (OM) indicates an association of mental addition with a rightward spatial bias, whereas subtraction is associated with a leftward bias. To evaluate the assumed attentional origin of the OM effect, we evaluated not only participants’ relative estimation error in a task requiring them to locate addition and subtraction results on a given number line but also their eye-fixation behaviour. Furthermore, to investigate the situatedness of spatial–numerical associations, the orientation of the number line (left-to-right vs. right-to left) was manipulated. OM biases in participants’ explicit number line estimations and more implicit eye-fixation behaviour are integrated into a two-process hypothesis of the OM effect suggesting a first rough spatial anticipation followed by an evaluation/correction process. This account not only is capable of accounting for the results observed for participants’ relative estimation error but is also corroborated by the eye-fixation results. Importantly, the fact that all effects were found independent of the orientation of the number line indicates that spatial–numerical associations such as the OM effect may not be hard-wired associations of spatial and numerical representations but rather reflect influences of situatedness on numerical cognition.

Abstract
Recent evidence indicated that fraction pair type determined whether a particular fraction is processed holistically, componentially or in a hybrid manner. Going beyond previous studies, we investigated how participants adapt their processing of fractions not only to fraction type, but also to experimental context. To examine adaptation in fraction processing, we recorded participants' eye-fixation behaviour in a fraction magnitude comparison task. Participants' eye fixation behaviour indicated componential processing of fraction pairs with common components for which the decision-relevant components are easy to identify. Importantly, we observed that fraction processing was adapted to experimental context: Evidence for componential processing was stronger, when experimental context allowed valid expectations about which components are decision-relevant. Taken together, we conclude that fraction processing is adaptive beyond the comparison of different fraction types, because participants continuously adjust to the experimental context in which fractions are processed.

Abstract
Amorphous silicon (aSi:H) flat panel detectors are prevalent in radiotherapy for megavoltage imaging tasks. Any clinical and dosimetrical application requires a well-defined dose response of the system to achieve meaningful results. Due to radiation damages, panels deteriorate and the linearity of pixel response to dose as well as the stability with regard to changing operating temperatures get worse with time. Using a single level gain correction can lead to an error of about 23% when irradiating a flood field image with 100 MU min(-1) on an old detector. A multi-level gain (MLG) correction is introduced, emending the nonlinearities and subpanel-related artifacts caused by insufficient radiation hardness of amplifiers in the read-out electronics. With rising temperature, offset values typically increase (up to 300 gray values) while the response at higher dose values per frame remain constant for a majority of pixels. To account for temperature-related image artifacts, two additional temperature correction methods have been developed. MLG in combination with temperature corrections can re-establish the aSi:H image quality to the performance required by reliable medical verification tools. Furthermore, the life span and recalibration intervals of these costly devices can be prolonged decisively.

Abstract
Increasing global temperature has led to an interest in plasticity in the timing of annual events; however, little is known about the demographic consequences of changing phenology. Annual reproductive success varies significantly among individuals within a population, and some of that variation has to do with the number of broods attempted by reproducing adults. In birds, female age and the timing of reproduction are often predictors of multiple breeding. We hypothesize that double brooding rates may be affected by spring temperature and that the response may vary with female age. We used a long-term reproductive data set for a migratory songbird, the prothonotary warbler (Protonotaria citrea) to assess which factors influence (a) an individual female's probability of double brooding and (b) the annual variation in population-level double brooding rates. We found that older and earlier nesting birds are more likely to double brood, and that there is no evidence for senescence with regard to this trait such that the oldest females were most likely to double brood. Previous experience with double brooding (i.e., whether the female double brooded in the previous year) significantly increased the probability of doing so again. When assessing annual variation in the double brooding rate, we found an interaction between spring temperature and the proportion of older females in the population. Specifically, older females are more likely to double brood in years with warmer springs, but this relationship was not seen for younger females. Previous studies have shown that warmer temperatures lead to earlier and narrower peaks in resources and we hypothesize that these peaks are more available to older and earlier arriving females, enabling them to successfully raise more than one brood in a season. Understanding how different age classes respond to changing environmental conditions will be imperative to managing declining species.

Abstract
Background Focal cortical dysplasias (FCD) are local disturbances of neocortical architecture and a common cause of pharmaco-resistant focal epilepsy. Little is known about the pathomechanisms leading to architectural abnormalities associated with FCD. Results In the present study we compared 52 FCD cases originating from the frontal or temporal lobe with or without Ammon’s horn sclerosis (AHS) with regard to structural and molecular differences. We applied layer-specific (ER81, RORß, SMI32, TLE4) and interneuron (calbindin, parvalbumin) markers by means of immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization (ISH), and real time RT-PCR and correlated our findings with clinical parameters. We found that: (1) Structural abnormalities were most prominent in layers III-VI including changed morphology of individual neurons or dispersion, blurring and thinning of layers. These alterations were most pronounced in isolated frontal FCD, whereas the most homogeneous group was FCD IIIa. (2) Numbers of calbindin- and parvalbumin-positive interneurons varied considerably within the different FCD groups, but were not generally reduced. A significant decrease was only found for calbindin-positive interneurons in frontal FCD, and for parvalbumin-positive interneurons in FCD IIIa. (3) Interestingly, FCD IIIa presented with significant changes in the numbers of calbindin- or TLE4-positive neurons when compared to isolated FCD or controls. (4) Correlations between clinical and cellular parameters strongly depended on FCD localisation and age of the patients. Conclusions In summary, our data suggest that late cortical development is disturbed in FCD, yet most likely by different causes depending on brain region, FCD type and FCD severity.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Proximal femoral fractures will gain increasing importance in the future due to the epidemiological development. Osteoporosis is often a limiting factor in the achievement of implant stability. New nailing systems offer the possibility of augmentation of the femoral neck component with cement. The aim of this study was to perform a biomechanical comparison of implant stability in osteoporotic pertrochanteric fractures using the proximal femoral nail antirotation (PFNA, Synthes GmbH, Umkirch, Germany) with cement augmented and non-augmented blades. MATERIALS AND METHODS Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) in six pairs of fresh-frozen human femurs. Standardised pertrochanteric fractures (AO31-A2.3) were treated with a PFNA. Cement augmentation was performed in six constructs. Axial loading was applied according to a single-leg-stance model using a hydraulic testing machine increasing to 1400N over 10,000 cycles. Biomechanical comparisons between the two groups that were comparable concerning BMD, tip-apex-distance and native stiffness were made with regard to postoperative stiffness, survived cycles, load to failure, failure mechanism and axial displacement. RESULTS The stiffness of all stabilised femurs was significantly lower than for native specimens (native 702.5±159.6N/mm vs. postoperative 275.4±53.8N/mm, p<0.001). Stiffness after instrumentation was significantly greater for the cement augmented group than for the non-augmented group (300.6±46.7N/mm vs. 250.3±51.6N/mm, respectively, p=0.001). Five of the twelve constructs survived cyclic testing. Statistically significant differences of the BMD were detected between survived and failed constructs (0.79±0.17g/cm(2) vs. 0.45±0.12g/cm(2), respectively, p=0.028). The failure loads for specimens surviving 10,000 cycles were 4611.9±2078.9N in the cement augmented group (n=3) and 4516.3N and 3253.5N in the non-augmented group (n=2). Postoperative stiffness was found to be a positive predictor of maximum force to failure (R(2)=0.83, p=0.02). CONCLUSIONS The results of this biomechanical study show that cement augmentation of the PFNA increases the implant stability in osteoporotic pertrochanteric fractures. Further studies are necessary to evaluate this procedure in providing long term clinical results.
