Abstract
During the Marine Aerosol Cloud and Wildfire Study (MACAWS) in June and July of 2018, aerosol composition and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) properties were measured over the N.E. Pacific to characterize the influence of aerosol hygroscopicity on predictions of ambient CCN and stratocumulus cloud droplet number concentrations (CDNC). Three vertical regions were characterized, corresponding to the marine boundary layer (MBL), an above-cloud organic aerosol layer (AC-OAL), and the free troposphere (FT) above the AC-OAL. The aerosol hygroscopicity parameter (κ) was calculated from CCN measurements (κ CCN) and bulk aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS) measurements (κ AMS). Within the MBL, measured hygroscopicities varied between values typical of both continental environments (~0.2) and remote marine locations (~0.7). For most flights, CCN closure was achieved within 20% in the MBL. For five of the seven flights, assuming a constant aerosol size distribution produced similar or better CCN closure than assuming a constant "marine" hygroscopicity (κ = 0.72). An aerosol-cloud parcel model was used to characterize the sensitivity of predicted stratocumulus CDNC to aerosol hygroscopicity, size distribution properties, and updraft velocity. Average CDNC sensitivity to accumulation mode aerosol hygroscopicity is 39% as large as the sensitivity to the geometric median diameter in this environment. Simulations suggest CDNC sensitivity to hygroscopicity is largest in marine stratocumulus with low updraft velocities (<0.2 m s-1), where accumulation mode particles are most relevant to CDNC, and in marine stratocumulus or cumulus with large updraft velocities (>0.6 m s-1), where hygroscopic properties of the Aitken mode dominate hygroscopicity sensitivity.

Abstract
Objective: To confirm the cutoff induration diameter of tuberculin skin test (TST) so as to decrease the false positive of the TST. Methods: Fasting blood glucose test, TST and Quanti FERON-TB (QFT) Gold In-Tube test were administered to recruit participants at the baseline stage. QFT was used as the gold standard to determine the cutoff of the TST test. Results: Overall, 5 405 participants were enrolled in this study, of whom 1 104 (20.4%) were QFT positive. Among all the 5 405 participants that without stratification, diagnostic value reached the highest when the induration diameter was 10.25 mm with sensitivity and specificity as 0.731 and 0.727, respectively. When the participants were divided into groups as nondiabetics, confirmed diabetics, undiagnosed diabetics, the sensitivities and specificities appeared as 0.701, 0.837, 0.824 and 0.805, 0.821, 0.778 with induration diameters as 11.25 mm, 10.25 mm and 11.25 mm, respectively. Conclusions: Findings of this study confirmed that the specificity of tuberculin test could be significantly improved by using 10-12 mm as the cutoff value for diagnosing the latent tuberculosis infection.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE MiR-381-3p plays an essential role in the progression of a variety of cancers, but its expression and role in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) progression have not been investigated. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of miR-381-3p and its function in PTC. PATIENTS AND METHODS The expression levels of miR-381-3p and low-density lipoprotein receptor‑related protein 6 (LRP6) mRNA in PTC tissues and cell lines were measured using RT-PCR. Cell proliferation, migration and invasion were assessed by cell viability assay and transwell assay. Luciferase assays and Western blotting were performed to demonstrate miR-381-3p target gene. RESULTS We found that miR-381-3p was significantly down-regulated in PTC tissues and cell lines. In vitro assay indicated that up-regulation of miR-381-3p significantly suppressed PTC cell proliferation, migration and invasion. Moreover, luciferase reporter gene assay demonstrated that miR-381-3p could target LRP6 by binding to the 3' UTR. Western blot and Reverse transcription‑quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT‑qPCR) showed that miR-381-3p overexpression suppressed the expression of LRP6 at both mRNA and proteins levels. In addition, functional experiment confirmed that LRP6 was involved in the suppressive effect of miR-381-3p-mediated PTC on cell proliferation, migration and invasion. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggested, for the first time, that miR-381-3p was lowly expressed in PTC tissues, and its up-regulation inhibited tumorigenesis of PTC by targeting LRP6.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the therapeutic effects of surgical management for local retroperitoneal recurrence of renal cell carcinoma after radical nephrectomy. Methods: Clinical and follow-up data of 33 cases of local recurrence after radical nephrectomy in Renji Hospital from January 2010 to April 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. Results: In these 33 patients, 25 was male and 8 was female; The median age was 54 years old. The pathological stage of radical nephrectomy included 14 cases of pT1-2N0M0 stage, 16 cases of pT3-4 N0M0 stage, and 3 cases of pN1 stage. Only 4 relapsing patients had symptoms, the others were all found to have recurrence by imaging examination during follow up period of postoperation.The median recurrence time for all patients was 30 months, and the median diameter of recurrent tumors was 4.5 cm.Twenty-nine patients underwent complete resection of local recurrent lesions, and 4 patients whose recurrent lesions could not be completely resected converted receive palliative surgery. The median intraoperative blood loss was 500 ml and the median hospital stay after surgery was 4 days. Clavien grade Ⅰ-Ⅱ complications occurred in 5 patients after surgery, and no serious complications of Clavien grade Ⅲ-Ⅴ complications occurred. Six patients received postoperative adjuvant target therapy and distant metastasis occurred in one patient.In the 27 patients without adjuvant target therapy, postoperative distant metastases occurred in 12 patients. The median survival time for all patients after local recurrence surgery was 31 months. The 1-year and 3-year survival rates were 86.8% and 36.9%, respectively. Conclusions: The rigorous imaging examination after radical nephrectomy can detect local recurrent lesions as early as possible in most relapsing patients and imaging examination can predict the integrity of surgical resection of local recurrence.Although intraoperative bleeding of resection of local recurrence is relatively high, the operation is safe and the postoperative complications are controllable. Postoperative adjuvant therapy may also provide better survival benefit for patients with local recurrence.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate whether elastic (stiffness) characteristics of tumours were associated with treatment responses and survival of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treated with transarterial chemoembolisation (TACE). MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective cohort study of 59 HCC patients with unresectable HCC who underwent TACE was undertaken. Acoustic radiation force impulse imaging (ARFI) was used to measure tissue stiffness of the index tumours and non-tumoural liver before TACE treatment. The correlation between the parameters of tumour stiffness and treatment response to TACE was assessed using mRECIST criteria as well as according to patient survival. RESULTS Tumour stiffness and its stiffness difference between tumour and non-tumoural liver were significantly associated with tumour response to TACE (p=0.019 and 0.010, respectively). Patients with tumour stiffness of <2 m/s or stiffness difference between tumour and non-tumoural liver of <0.5 were more likely to have treatment response to TACE. Univariate analysis showed that the difference in stiffness between tumour and non-tumoural livers (p=0.039) was one of the significant predictors of overall survival (OS). In multivariate analysis, alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) (p=0.006) and Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) stage (p=0.017) were identified as independent predictors of survival. CONCLUSION Tumour stiffness characteristics might be an added predictive marker of treatment response to TACE in patients with HCC.

Abstract
AIMS Evidence-based estimates of appropriate rates of radiotherapy utilisation are usually stated as the proportion of cancer patients who should receive radiotherapy at least once in their lifetime. However, the prolonged follow-up required to measure the lifetime radiotherapy rate limits its value in monitoring access to radiotherapy in routine practice. The objectives of this study were to evaluate shorter-term methods for measuring radiotherapy utilisation and to determine how well they predict the lifetime radiotherapy rate. MATERIALS AND METHODS The Ontario Cancer Registry provided records of all cases of cancer diagnosed in Ontario between 1984 and 2015. Records of all radiotherapy delivered by Ontario cancer centres were linked to individual cases in the Ontario Cancer Registry. Patients were followed forward for 20 years to determine the relationship between short-term and long-term rates of use of radiotherapy. Radiotherapy utilisation was also estimated by comparing total radiotherapy workload with cancer incidence; these measures were compared with observed long-term radiotherapy rates. RESULTS The rate of use of radiotherapy within 1 year of diagnosis (RT1y) was strongly predictive of the rate of use of radiotherapy after 20 years (RT20y); for each annual cohort of cases between 1984 and 1995, RT20y was approximately equal to 1.3 × RT1y. The number of cases treated for the first time with radiotherapy in a specified period, divided by the number of new cases diagnosed in the same period, was about equal to the proportion of cases treated with radiotherapy within 20 years of diagnosis (RT20y). CONCLUSIONS The lifetime rate of use of radiotherapy may be predicted quite accurately from the rate observed within 1 year of diagnosis, or from the ratio of new cases treated to cancer incidence in a specified period. Either of these measures may therefore be used to audit radiotherapy utilisation against the existing evidence-based targets.

Abstract
Xylan-g-/P(AA-co-AM)/Graphene oxide (GO) hydrogels were prepared and used in the removal of heavy mental ions. Acrylamide (AM), acrylic acid (AA), and xylan were used as the raw materials to prepare the hydrogels with ammonium persulfate (APS) as the initiator. The prepared hydrogels were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). Some important properties of nanocomposite hydrogels such as swelling behavior, mechanical property, and adsorption capacity were also examined as well as the regeneration of the hydrogels. The results showed that the prepared hydrogels reached the equilibrium state of swelling after 12 h, and the compressive strength of the hydrogel with 30 mg of GO could reach up to 203 kPa. Compared with traditional hydrogel, the mechanical properties of the hydrogels with GO were obviously improved. The maximum adsorption capacity of hydrogels for Pb2+, Cd2+, and Zn2+ could reach up to 683 mg/g, 281 mg/g, and 135 mg/g, respectively. After five cycles of adsorption and desorption, the recovery rate of the hydrogels on Pb2+, Cd2+, and Zn2+ was still up to 87%, 80%, and 80%, respectively—all above 80%.

Abstract
The fast and efficient synthesis of nanoparticles on flexible and lightweight substrates is increasingly critical for various medical and wearable applications. However, conventional high temperature (high-T) processes for nanoparticle synthesis are intrinsically incompatible with temperature-sensitive substrates, including textiles and paper (i.e. low-T substrates). In this work, we report a non-contact, 'fly-through' method to synthesize nanoparticles on low-T substrates by rapid radiative heating under short timescales. As a demonstration, textile substrates loaded with platinum (Pt) salt precursor are rapidly heated and quenched as they move across a 2000 K heating source at a continuous production speed of 0.5 cm s-1. The rapid radiative heating method induces the thermal decomposition of various precursor salts and nanoparticle formation, while the short duration ensures negligible change to the respective low-T substrate along with greatly improved production efficiency. The reported method can be generally applied to the synthesis of metal nanoparticles (e.g. gold and ruthenium) on various low-T substrates (e.g. paper). The non-contact and continuous 'fly-through' synthesis offers a robust and efficient way to synthesize supported nanoparticles on flexible and lightweight substrates. It is also promising for ultrafast and roll-to-roll manufacturing to enable viable applications.

Abstract
The advancement of nanofluidic applications will require the identification of materials with high-conductivity nanoscale channels that can be readily obtained at massive scale. Inspired by the transpiration in mesostructured trees, we report a nanofluidic membrane consisting of densely packed cellulose nanofibers directly derived from wood. Numerous nanochannels are produced among an expansive array of one-dimensional cellulose nanofibers. The abundant functional groups of cellulose enable facile tuning of the surface charge density via chemical modification. The nanofiber-nanofiber spacing can also be tuned from ~2 to ~20 nm by structural engineering. The surface-charge-governed ionic transport region shows a high ionic conductivity plateau of ~2 mS cm-1 (up to 10 mM). The nanofluidic membrane also exhibits excellent mechanical flexibility, demonstrating stable performance even when the membrane is folded 150°. Combining the inherent advantages of cellulose, this novel class of membrane offers an environmentally responsible strategy for flexible and printable nanofluidic applications.

Inspired by the aligned structure in muscles, a highly anisotropic, strong, and conductive wood hydrogel is developed by fully utilizing the high-tensile strength of natural wood, and the flexibility and high-water content of hydrogels. The wood hydrogel exhibits a high-tensile strength of 36 MPa along the longitudinal direction due to the strong bonding and cross-linking between the aligned cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) in wood and the polyacrylamide (PAM) polymer. The wood hydrogel is 5 times and 500 times stronger than the bacterial cellulose hydrogels (7.2 MPa) and the unmodified PAM hydrogel (0.072 MPa), respectively, representing one of the strongest hydrogels ever reported. Due to the negatively charged aligned CNF, the wood hydrogel is also an excellent nanofluidic conduit with an ionic conductivity of up to 5 × 10-4 S cm-1 at low concentrations for highly selective ion transport, akin to biological muscle tissue. The work offers a promising strategy to fabricate a wide variety of strong, anisotropic, flexible, and ionically conductive wood-based hydrogels for potential biomaterials and nanofluidic applications.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the efficacy and drug related adverse reactions of sorafenib and sunitinib as first-line tyrosine-kinase inhibitors (TKIs) for patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) and analyze the clinical prognostic factor for survival. Methods: The data of 271 patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma who had complete clinicopathological data were retrospectively analyzed, including 174 cases in sorafenib group and 97 cases in sunitinib group, to access patients' overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS). Prognostic values of all characteristics were determined by using univariate and multivariate Cox regression models. Results: The objective response rates (ORR) of the sorafenib and sunitinib groups were 14.9% and 19.6%, respectively, and the disease control rates (DCR) were 85.1% and 88.6%, respectively. No significant difference was found between the sorafenib and sunitinib group in ORR (P=0.325) or DCR (P=0.408). The most common grade 3 to 4 adverse events in the sorafenib group were hand-foot syndrome (6.7%), diarrhea (2.3%), and rash (2.3%). The most common grade 3 to 4 adverse events in the sunitinib group were neutropenia (6.2%), hand-foot syndrome (6.2%), and thrombocytopenia (4.6%). During the follow-up, 97 cases death occurred and 81 cases disease progression occurred in sorafenib group. The median PFS was 12 months (95% CI: 9-15 months), and the median OS was 25 months (95% CI: 21-29 months) in sorafenib group. While 74 cases death occurred and 40 cases disease progression occurred in sunitinib group, the median PFS was 12 months (95% CI: 10-12 months) and the median OS was 23 months (95% CI: 20-32 months) in sunitinib group. No significant difference was found between the sorafenib and the sunitinib group in PFS (P=0.771) or OS (P=0.548). Multivariate analysis showed Fuhrman grades (HR=1.358, 95%CI: 1.004-1.835), number of metastatic sites (HR=1.550, 95%CI: 1.143-2.101) and MSKCC risk grade (Intermediate risk group: HR=1.621, 95%CI: 1.117-2.232; Poor risk group: HR=2.890, 95%CI: 1.942-4.298) were independent prognostic factors for PFS. Fuhrman grades (HR=2.135, 95%CI: 1.533-2.974), number of metastatic sites (HR=1.774, 95%CI: 1.279-2.461) and MSKCC risk grade (Intermediate risk group: HR=1.415, 95%CI: 1.002-1.998; Poor risk group: HR=3.161, 95%CI: 2.065-4.838) were independent prognostic factors for OS. Conclusions: The results of this study indicate that sorafenib and sunitinib are both effective as the first-line TKIs for mRCC patients and sorafenib has comparable efficacy to sunitinib. But they have differences in the incidence of adverse effects. Fuhrman grades, number of metastatic sites and MSKCC risk grade are independent prognostic factors for mRCC patients.

Abstract
DNA vaccination is a promising cancer treatment due to its safety, but poor immunogenicity limits its application. However, immunoadjuvants, heterogeneous prime-boost strategies and combination with conventional treatments can be used to improve the antitumour immune effects. A CpG motif and interleukin-2 (IL-2) cytokine are often used as adjuvants. In this study, a DNA vaccine containing a CpG motif was constructed to evaluate its adjuvant effect. The results show that the cytotoxicity of the DNA vaccine was increased fivefold, and survival lifetime was prolonged twofold by the CpG motif adjuvant. To simplify the industrial production process, a bicistronic plasmid was constructed to carry the fusion genes of survivin/MUC1 (MS) and IL-2 and with a CpG motif in its backbone. The results showed that the antitumour effect of the bicistronic vaccine was the same as that of the two vaccine co-injected regime. Furthermore, the vaccine could suppress metastatic tumour foci by 69.1% in colorectal carcinoma-bearing mice. Moreover, the vaccine induced survivin- and MUC1-specific immune responses in splenocytes and induced the immune promoting factor CCL-19 and GM-CSF upregulated, while metastatic-associated factor MMP-9 and immunosuppressing factor PD-L1 downregulated in tumour tissue. When combining the vaccine with the chemotherapy drug oxaliplatin, the survival was prolonged by about 2.5-fold. In conclusion, the DNA vaccine containing a CpG motif in bicistronic form showed good effects on colorectal cancer by inhibiting both tumour growth and metastasis, and combination with oxaliplatin could improve its antitumour effects.
